A Gem In The Black Forest

You can search the world over looking for the perfect hotel. I found a hotel that I consider a gem in the Black Forest of Germany called Traube Tonbach. The hotel is located in Tonbach, one of nine villages that collectively make up the town of Baiersbronn.

The Main Building Of Traube Tonbach

The hotel complex lies on both sides of the little main street. Pull your car up to the front of the main building and you will be warmly greeted as your luggage is quickly unloaded and your car parked for you. You are then whisked up one floor to the front desk to check in and be shown to your room.

The Schwarzwaldstube Is One Of Three Restaurants In The Original Building Of The Traube Tonbach

There are four restaurants to choose from for your evening meal. My husband and I have enjoyed all four on previous visits. On this trip, we will be eating in the Silberberg Restaurant which is located in the main building. We will also enjoy one lunch in the world famous Schwarzwaldstube located in the building across the street. Chef Harald Wohlfahrt has earned three Michelin stars and is considered one of the top chefs in Europe.

The hotel is a mix of old fashioned country luxury and contemporary chic. We have a beautiful suite composed of a sitting room and a separate bedroom with a balcony that stretched across both rooms. The balcony has a wonderful view of the Black Forest as you can see from the first photo where it was taken.

Most of the guests at Traube are Germans that visit the hotel year after year. They come to get back to nature with hikes in the nearby forest, swim in one of several indoor and outdoor pools, have a treatment in the new spa or join in the many planned daily activities.

We have no problems at the hotel with not speaking German as almost all the staff speaks English. Each evening we are given an English dinner menu and as each dish is presented, it is described in English about how it was prepared. Herr Finkbeiner,  the tall handsome owner of this many generational family hotel or his son stop by each table every evening. There are not many hotels today, where the owner makes a point of visiting with each of the guests to ask about their day and to make sure their wishes are being taken care of.

As far as the food in your choice of restaurants, you can’t get any better as far as I am concerned. You can have a wonderful traditional dish of sausages and local hams as well as many locals dishes that you might not have heard about that are just waiting to be discovered.

A beautifully set table awaits guests each evening.  One of the highlights is the candle light dinner in the Silberberg Restaurant that consists of seven creative and delicious courses. From beginning to end, our meal could not have been better.

After a good night’s sleep, you return to the Silberberg Restaurant each morning for the breakfast buffet. I don’t think that you will find a nicer one anywhere…at least I haven’t found one in all of my travels. Just look at the beautiful way the table is set for breakfast with the fine table linens embroidered with a crowing rooster.

After a hearty German breakfast, it is nice to take a ride and explore the lovely small towns nearby. We passed beautiful farmland with green fields and planted fall crops. Triberg is known for its waterfall and cuckoo clocks but I found the town overrun with tour buses. There is a nice folk museum that you might find interesting.

Time to get back in our rented Volvo and head back to Traube Tonbach for one more meal before we have to say “good bye” to the Black Forest.

If you ever have a chance to spend time in the Black Forest of Germany, I can highly recommend staying at the Traube Tonbach hotel for a special and memorable stay. Everything about Traube Tonbach is based on gracious hospitality and the best of everything. It truly is a gem in the Black Forest.

  1. Feel I am back in my childhood when for over a year, I lived in Freudenstadt in Schwarzwald, just a hop-skip and jump away from Baiersbronn. Beautiful, beautiful hilly countryside and those trees 🙂 ! You did choose a very comfortable hotel: elegant and stylish and dateless . . . Most of all love that breakfast platter of smoked meats . . . my kind of awakening meal even now 🙂 ! Enjoy!!

    1. Hi Eha, We have driven through Freudenstadt several times on this trip. It seems like every place that we travel to includes going through the city. Staying in Baiersbronn at Traube is a wonderful experience. As you say…it is timeless elegance. There is nothing better than a German breakfast to start the day. I’m glad that the post brought back good memories for you. Thank you for your nice compliment.

  2. Karen, how do you find such jewels? The hotel food and service sound impeccable and the breakfast… I don’t know why but at home I’m never hungry for breakfast, but when I travel I could devour more than for lunch or any other meal, so the breakfast buffet is very important in hotels. Alas, so few have a big choice and high quality products… I think I have never seen such a choice of cold meats and bread, not to mention fruit… WHat I love the most I think is however the way the breakfast table is set. I could have there every single meal of the day and night. Have you already had the famous Black Forest cake? I know there are so many false ones circulating around internet…

    1. Hi Sissi, I put a lot of research into our trips. We have stayed at Traube several times because of the excellent service. And of course as a foodie, I have to eat in the famous restaurant at least once. Would you believe that I didn’t eat any Black Forest cake which I love. I did have the wonderful cherries as a side with pastries each morning though. I just had to include a photo of the beautiful table set for breakfast…the lovely embroidered red rooster was on the linen napkins as well. I’m glad you liked it as much as I did.

    1. Hi Carolyn, I think your description of Traube Tonbach is correct. It is a wonderful hotel that we have enjoyed returning to several times over the years. The cured meat station is terrific…such a variety.

    1. Hi Marie, The Black Forest really is a beautiful part of Germany. Our first stop has been wonderful…one of our favorite places to visit.

    1. Thank you Emil, for your comment. I wish that I and most of my readers could understand what you said. Perhaps you would like to translate for us.

      1. I apologize to both parties ahead of time: it is admittedly none of my business to translate when such perchance may be needed? The message says: –
‘What a beautiful hotel we can find in ‘Traube Tonbach!’ German hospitality is incomparable and your love of good food and nature cannot be surpassed’!
Karen – I am truly sorry If I have done the ‘wrong thing’!

      2. I have to thank you very much for the translation, Eha…please no apologies are necessary. I only know a few words of German…mostly greetings and a few food terms. I love that you took the time to explain what Emil wrote for myself and the other readers. It was very kind of you. Please join in on the conversations anytime you please.

    1. Hi John, Charcuterie is one my husband’s favorite parts of a German breakfast…that and the wonderful breads. I’m glad to know that you have learned to avoid jet lag as well. Thank you for your comment.

      1. LOL … I meant I avoided jet lag by reading about your travel and not actually going myself 🙂

  3. This looks like an amazing place! What great service and that breakfast buffet looks divine! It looks like you’re having a great time so far and I hope the weather stays nice for you. It’s been rather cold here in Northern Germany but sunny as of late. Enjoy your trip!

    1. Thank you Laura, for your nice comment. The temperature is much like home so that is a good thing. Traube Tonbach is truly an amazing hotel with service that is second to none. We should see all of the items on the buffet that I left out of the photos.

    1. Hi Sibella, I’m so happy that you enjoyed the post and that it brought back memories of the time that you lived in the Black Forest. I have been to Waldshut but never to St. Blaisen. Thank you for your comment and suggestion.

  4. OH MY! What a lovely experience you are having! The hotel looks Amazing, and the view is Incredible! I love that you had black forest ham in the Black Forest! Like having french fries in France….My mouth waters as I look at the pictures and imagine how wonderful the food is in these incredible restaurants! Thank you for sharing that Germany is more than just bratwurst and beer,.

    1. Hi Bella, I think I can agree with you that Traube Tonbach is an amazing hotel to stay at. Germany is definitely way more than bratwurst and beer…the food is excellent.

  5. Gosh, the Traube Tonbach hotel looks like a real find. Nice looking room, and the food is fabulous! Love that breakfast buffet – so many choices. That crowing rooster is such a nice touch! I’ve been to Germany only once, and then for an extremely brief trip to Berlin (such great museums there!). The Black Forest is one place I’ve always wanted to visit, although I didn’t know why (I think it’s the name). But now I do! Tremendous post – thank you so much.

    1. Hi John, Traube Tonbach is a lovely hotel in a beautiful part of the Black Forest. I do hope that I get a chance to visit Berlin sometime…everyone says what a wonderful city it is. Thank you so much for your very nice compliment…I’m glad you enjoyed the post.

    1. Hi Mandy, I always enjoy myself when it comes to the food and worry about any weight that I might gain when I’m back home. You never know if you will ever get the chance again to experience all the wonderful things that you come across when traveling. Besides…I always take one outfit that is a little big just in case I happen to add a couple of pounds while traveling. LOL.

    1. Hi Tanya, I haven’t had to loosen my belt just yet but I’m sure I will before the end of the trip. You know…it will be worth it though. I have all winter to get back in shape. Thank you for your lovely comment.

    1. Hi Mad Dog, I have to agree…amazing is a perfect description of Traube Tonbach. I think it is so easy traveling in Germany because almost everyone speaks English and are always willing to help with anything you need.

  6. It looks and sounds like you had a wonderful experience at this hotel between the food, spa and the other amenities like the considerate service provided.

    1. Hi Cayla, Thank you for stopping by for a visit. I’m glad you enjoyed the photos. The sausages were a special on the menu and my husband just had to have them. Thank you for your nice comment.

    1. I think you might be right Linda. It does feel like I have died and gone to heaven or that I’m having a wonderful dream. Thank you for your comment.

  7. As a breakfast fan, I loved the difference between the German verison and ours – not much biscuits and gravy on that one. If you get into southern Bavaria, consider the Eibsee Hotel at the base of the Zugspitze.

    1. Hi Larry, I haven’t found any biscuits and gravy so far but all things are possible. Thank you for your suggestion about the hotel. We will be staying near the Zugspitze on this trip but on the Austrian side in the town of Lermoos.

  8. Karen more wonderful photos from your trip – you have certainly chosen one beautiful hotel with terrific restaurants and if you have had the pleasure to enjoy a meal prepared by the famous Harald Wohlfahrt, I am sure it was pure delight from start to finish!

    1. Hi Andrea, I’m glad you are enjoying the photos. Traube Tonbach is such a special hotel. We had a seven course tasting menu for lunch prepared by Chef Wohlfahrt but he insisted we must have one additional course. With several little gifts from the kitchen, pre and post desserts, we ate like royalty. Needless to say we didn’t have dinner that evening. I’m going to do a post at the end of our trip about the meal as it would have made this post too long. You are right…it was pure delight from start to finish. Thank you for your comment.

    1. Hi Chunklet, That was just one of the many pools at the hotel. The restaurant was fantastic with so many wonderful dishes to choose from. Thank you for your comment.

  9. It certainly looks like a gem in the Black Forest. I have never been there but it is definitely now on my wish-list. It’s all so beautiful and romantic looking and I just love the table setting for breakfast with the crowing rooster – what attention to detail xx

    1. Hi Charlie, The attention to detail appears all over the hotel…it is what makes it so special. If you truly want a special place to stay in the Black Forest, Traube Tonbach is it.

  10. What a fantastic review Karen, it looks like the weather is cooperating for your vacation, I’m so glad for you. The hotel you selected is lovely too, how could you not enjoy a stay there; including a king size bed which is not the norm in Europe! The food looks great too and with all the walking and hiking offered, you needn’t worry about putting on weight!

    1. Thank you Eva, for your lovely compliment. I’m glad you enjoyed the post. We have had some rain…that is why there weren’t many outdoor photos. Whenever I research for hotels in an area, I try to find a hotel with kingsize beds as that is what my husband is used to. If I gain a pound or two from eating the delicious food, it will have been worth it. I’ll worry about taking it off when I return.

    1. Hi Ducky, The Schwarzwald (Black Forest) is such a lovely part of Germany. It is nice that you have a couple of authentic cuckoo clocks…they are so much fun. Thank you for your comment.

  11. Certainly a Place I would need to bring a larger size pants to or loose fitting skirts – ha! My Gosh the FOOD – YUMMERS! Loving your post and photos – thanks for sharing:) Makes me want to go there even more NOW! Have a Wonderful Day:)

    1. Thank you Adventurer, for your nice compliment. I’m glad that you enjoyed the post and photos. Germany is such a great country to visit and the Black Forest has so many wonderful places to explore. And you are right about the food…delicious.

    1. Hi Laura, The Black Forest is a lovely region of Germany. I always plan our trips around food so we will be dining very well. Thank you for your comment.

  12. Leave it to you to find the perfect spot with the absolute best food. I didn’t show P the photos of the sausages….he would be in heaven. Tell me, after you enjoyed a sumptuous dinner, did you go for a swim?

    1. Hi Lulu, You know me so well…I’m always on the lookout for wonderful food no matter where I am. You know that my husband enjoyed those sausages…he just couldn’t resist. I haven’t gone for a swim yet…the spa has been calling.

  13. Hi Karen, It looks like a beautiful place a diamond in the rough and even has a spa. I was just in the black forest during my stay in Europe in the last 2 weeks trekking through it but we needed to stay in a small town called Hiltrup for work. We stayed in a very dismal Spartan like hotel called the pritzenbruck which I poetically nicknamed the “prison brook”. I guess there is always next time… Take Care, BAM

    1. Hi Bam, You gave me such a chuckle with the “prison brook” description of your hotel. I’ve only stayed in one hotel like that years ago. The bath was down the hall and the towel was about the size of a dish towel. I hope that there will be a next time at a wonderful hotel in your future.

      1. Wow they actually gave you a towel, must have been a real snazzy place… LOL I guess those kinds of experiences keeps the humor alive in traveling abroad. Take care and have a super weekend. BAM

      2. Oh…it was real fancy. It was the second floor of an office building. LOL. I had to wear my raincoat down the hall to the shower since it wasn’t in the room and then the lights went out halfway down. I had to feel my way down the rest of the hall until I found a light switch. You definitely have to keep a sense of humor when you travel. Hope you have a nice weekend as well.

  14. I’m in love with that rooster linen! I would purchase one as a souvenir and eat breakfast on it every morning just for the wonderful memories this would give! Any hotel that has your stamp of approval, Karen, is one I would go to for certain. If they can please an excellent chef like yourself… they are top-notch, I’d say! xx

    1. Hi Smidge, The linens at the hotel were so beautiful. The embroidered rooster on the table cloth and napkins was such a lovely and cheery way to start the day. Thank you so much for your kind compliment. The chefs at Traube are some of the very best in Germany…the food was delicious.

    1. Hi Donna, I have to agree with you about the hotels and food in Europe. I know that there is very little in our country of the same caliber. I do hope that you will get a chance to enjoy some lovely trips after you retire. Thank you for your comment.

  15. I do so love your vacation posts Karen. I had the opportunity to visit the black forest years ago and I would love to go back someday. This hotel looks like a great place to stay!

    1. Thank you Kristy, for your nice compliment. I’m glad that you enjoy my travel posts. I do hope that you get the chance to return to this lovely area again.

    1. Hi Victoria, I think that my husband would agree with you about the breakfast. Traube serves one of the best I’m ever seen…there is something for everyone’s taste. I’m glad you enjoyed the post.

    1. Hi Ming, Traube is truly a home away from home…no matter what room you stay in. What makes it so special is how wonderful everyone treats you. German breads and rolls are so delicious and the hotel has such a great selection. I didn’t have any Black Forest cake and it is one of my favorites…there were just so many tempting desserts to try. I did have some of the pitted cherries every morning with pastries.

  16. So ironic that whenever I read Black Forest, I expected a picture of a gorgeous luscious cake! The food and decor look beautiful, no doubt you’re feasting on some more incredible small goods and charcuterie as I write this now 🙂

    1. Hi Alli, I think that most people are like you and always think of the cake. I have an absolutely wonderful recipe for Black Forest cake that I will have to make and post about when I’m planning a party. It is too decadent of a cake to have in the house when there are only two people. LOL. Yes, I have just returned from having a lovely cream of potato soup with speck (cured ham), homemade croutons and drizzled with pumpkin seed oil for lunch.

  17. Beautiful scenery – I think I passed NEAR the black forest once but didn’t actually see it proper. It looks wonderful, and that hotel looks fantastic. I dig breakfasts like that… I’m a big fan of breads, cheeses and meats for breakfast, with a healthy serving of fruits and sliced veg too. It’s hard to find such breakfasts at hotels in France. They’re HUGE fans of sweet breakfasts… that meal seems to consist of chocolate-filled pastries, sweet cereals and jam 😦

    1. Hi Charles, Would you believe that we will usually choose to stay in the Black Forest of Germany and take day trips over to the Alsace region of France because my husband loves the German breakfasts so much. I find that many of the hotels in Germany have absolutely delicious croissants and and pastries. I’m a big fan of having one of the seeded rolls with a very ripe cheese followed by a very small pastry for breakfast. I’m going to have to do a lot of walking to keep the pounds off.

  18. What a gorgeous hotel! I am impressed that the hotel owner and family takes such a personal interest in how you enjoy the stay. Except for B & Bs I’ve never had that experience. I am sure I have never even seen a breakfast spread like this either. So many smoked meats? I can see why guests return to such careful detail and attention to their guests. I hope the rest of your travels is as special as this obviously was, Karen. Debra

    1. Hi Debra, Isn’t Traube a wonderful hotel. I think the personalized and caring service is one of the reasons that people return year after year. I have never seen a breakfast buffet as great as theirs. Thank you for your nice wish for our travels. There are going to be some other lovely hotels ahead as we are returning to some of our favorite hotels as well as a couple of new ones that sound great.

  19. That’s the view from the balcony of your hotel?!!? I don’t think I’d be able to leave! Give me a book and a cup of tea and I’m set. 🙂 what an amazing hotel! Talk about a luxury vacation in a beautiful location! I’m very envious I must say. You two definitely know how to travel! 🙂

    1. Hi MJ, Yes, that is the view from the balcony of our hotel room. And everything you said is true…it is an amazing hotel in an absolutely lovely location. Thank you for for your nice comment.

    1. Hi Lorraine, If you ever get a chance to visit Germany, I know that you would love the country. Beautiful scenery, friendly people and very good food. They do not how to start the day with a great breakfast…especially at Traube.

  20. I am so enjoying travelling with you on your trip. That hotel is a gem. I love the breakfast set up especially all that fresh fruits, meats and bread. Great idea to start the day with a hearty German breakfast, now you are all energized for the hiking and sight seeing..

    1. Thank you Norma, for your nice compliment. I’m happy that you are enjoying traveling along on the trip. Traube really is a gem of a hotel. The hotel has everything that you could possibly want in the way of services. We love the hearty breakfasts that start the day. We usually just have a bowl of soup or something light at lunchtime.

  21. I love traveling with you, Karen. First class all the way. Truly that hotel is a gem…you rarely see such thorough attention to all details these days and while modern, it seems to have an old world aesthetic as well. And the food…wow! The only time I’ve seen a breakfast buffet remotely that extensive was in the Hotel Del Coronado. I feel like I just took a little trip to the Black Forest and feel more relaxed than I did before reading! 🙂 I’m excited to see where we go next!

    1. Thank you Betsy, for your nice comment. It is always nice to know that you enjoy my posts on traveling. No matter where you go it would be hard to find a hotel that strives to make all your wishes come true. I’m glad you enjoyed the trip to the Black Forest. I think you will enjoy our next stop…we are going to be in the southwestern part of Germany next on the Bodensee (Lake Constance).

    1. Hi France, It is going to be a wonderful trip…I’m happy that you will be following along. Don’t be jealous…just think of it as a little information for a future trip that you may have someday in the future. Thank you for your comment.

  22. I’m really enjoying “our” trip and it certainly looks like you’re eating well – yikes that breakfast is awesome. My husband was stationed in Germany many years ago & I guess they used to do practice stuff in tanks in the Black Forest. Apparently they weren’t very good driving their tanks & some of the trees got damaged, I’m sure there were hangovers involved. I’m not sure how much the U.S. had to reimburse the Germans, but he did say that they take their Black Forest very seriously. Glad to see it still survived the army!

    1. Hi Diane, I really had to laugh at your comment. I keep seeing military speed limit signs for trucks and tanks…maybe they were just traveling a little over the limit. Believe me…the Black Forest is still beautiful despite the little damage that they might have caused. I’m sure the army helped plant new trees so I think your husband and his buddies are in the clear. I’m happy to know that you are enjoying “our” trip. I knew there was room in the backseat for anyone that wanted to join our adventure. Thank you for your comment…I really enjoyed it.

  23. Lovely post Karen. I’ve actually not made it to southern Germany for 20 years. These past 3 living in Hamburg, we just never made it… Now I’m ready to hop on the express train! It’s really only 5 hours from here. My jet lag has been pretty easy… Ok it us 5.45am … But I like getting up early 🙂

    1. Hi Wendy, I’m an early riser as well…maybe that is why we do better with the jet lag. I really do think you need to hop on a train. I’m definitely going to entice you with some of our favorite hotels that we have enjoyed over the years on this trip. I’m jealous that it is so easy for you to visit this lovely area. Thank you for following along on our journey.

    1. Thank you Raymund, for your comment. I think most people have the impression that sausages and cold cuts are the normal thing that everyone eats in Germany. That really isn’t the case…some of the most wonderful dishes I have ever had have been in the wonderful restaurants of Germany. You will continue to see that in my posts from the rest of the trip.

    1. Hi Misky, I’m glad you enjoyed the post on the Black Forest and that it brought back nice memories from your visit there. Thank you for your comment.

  24. Very nice article and pictures. You have indeed chosen one of the best hotels that you can find here in Germany. We’ve been there a couple of times as hospitality and food – especially in the “Schwarzwaldstube” – are perfect. You might know that Baiersbronn does not only have the “Traube Tonbach” but also the “Bareiss”, another 5 star hotel with many superb restaurants. It seems that both hotels try to surpass each other in every aspect. Nice competition if guests can’t decide anymore which one to chose… (However – and although I love the Traube a lot – I consider the breakfast in “Bareiss” to be even better…)

    1. Hi Thomas, Thank you for stopping by for a visit and your nice compliment. Traube Tonbach is one of my favorite hotels that I keep returning to over the years. I know the reputation of Bareiss but when you have a hotel that feels like you are returning to visit good friends that is where you like to go back to. So happy that you enjoyed the post and hope that you return. I will be doing more posts on Germany as well as Austria. It is nice to meet another foodie…especially one from Germany.

  25. What beautiful photos…they certainly dispel the notion I think many of us may have of Germany as more dark and grey and yes, still a bit foreboding. I’m of German ancestry and one day hope to visit; maybe Munich it must be!

    1. Hi Barbara, Thank you for stopping by for a visit. My goodness…I certainly don’t think that people would view Germany as dark, grey and foreboding. As you can see from the photos, Germany is an absolutely beautiful country. Of course any place in the world will have grey weather from time to time, but it is not the normal in most of my visits to Germany. The warmth of the people always make any visitor feel very welcomed. If you have a German ancestry (which I do not), I would think that you would enjoy visiting this lovely region.

  26. Karen, absolutely gorgeous in every single way! What a beautiful place. Not sure if I would want to leave : )

    1. Hi Judy, I have to agree with you. We have enjoyed visiting this hotel several times and it just keeps getting better and better. It is always hard to say goodbye to everyone that has made your visit so memorable.
