You can search the world over looking for the perfect hotel. I found a hotel that I consider a gem in the Black Forest of Germany called Traube Tonbach. The hotel is located in Tonbach, one of nine villages that collectively make up the town of Baiersbronn.
The hotel complex lies on both sides of the little main street. Pull your car up to the front of the main building and you will be warmly greeted as your luggage is quickly unloaded and your car parked for you. You are then whisked up one floor to the front desk to check in and be shown to your room.
There are four restaurants to choose from for your evening meal. My husband and I have enjoyed all four on previous visits. On this trip, we will be eating in the Silberberg Restaurant which is located in the main building. We will also enjoy one lunch in the world famous Schwarzwaldstube located in the building across the street. Chef Harald Wohlfahrt has earned three Michelin stars and is considered one of the top chefs in Europe.
The hotel is a mix of old fashioned country luxury and contemporary chic. We have a beautiful suite composed of a sitting room and a separate bedroom with a balcony that stretched across both rooms. The balcony has a wonderful view of the Black Forest as you can see from the first photo where it was taken.
Most of the guests at Traube are Germans that visit the hotel year after year. They come to get back to nature with hikes in the nearby forest, swim in one of several indoor and outdoor pools, have a treatment in the new spa or join in the many planned daily activities.
We have no problems at the hotel with not speaking German as almost all the staff speaks English. Each evening we are given an English dinner menu and as each dish is presented, it is described in English about how it was prepared. Herr Finkbeiner, the tall handsome owner of this many generational family hotel or his son stop by each table every evening. There are not many hotels today, where the owner makes a point of visiting with each of the guests to ask about their day and to make sure their wishes are being taken care of.
As far as the food in your choice of restaurants, you can’t get any better as far as I am concerned. You can have a wonderful traditional dish of sausages and local hams as well as many locals dishes that you might not have heard about that are just waiting to be discovered.
A beautifully set table awaits guests each evening. One of the highlights is the candle light dinner in the Silberberg Restaurant that consists of seven creative and delicious courses. From beginning to end, our meal could not have been better.
After a good night’s sleep, you return to the Silberberg Restaurant each morning for the breakfast buffet. I don’t think that you will find a nicer one anywhere…at least I haven’t found one in all of my travels. Just look at the beautiful way the table is set for breakfast with the fine table linens embroidered with a crowing rooster.
After a hearty German breakfast, it is nice to take a ride and explore the lovely small towns nearby. We passed beautiful farmland with green fields and planted fall crops. Triberg is known for its waterfall and cuckoo clocks but I found the town overrun with tour buses. There is a nice folk museum that you might find interesting.
Time to get back in our rented Volvo and head back to Traube Tonbach for one more meal before we have to say “good bye” to the Black Forest.
If you ever have a chance to spend time in the Black Forest of Germany, I can highly recommend staying at the Traube Tonbach hotel for a special and memorable stay. Everything about Traube Tonbach is based on gracious hospitality and the best of everything. It truly is a gem in the Black Forest.

Karen, how do you find such jewels? The hotel food and service sound impeccable and the breakfast… I don’t know why but at home I’m never hungry for breakfast, but when I travel I could devour more than for lunch or any other meal, so the breakfast buffet is very important in hotels. Alas, so few have a big choice and high quality products… I think I have never seen such a choice of cold meats and bread, not to mention fruit… WHat I love the most I think is however the way the breakfast table is set. I could have there every single meal of the day and night. Have you already had the famous Black Forest cake? I know there are so many false ones circulating around internet…
Hi Sissi, I put a lot of research into our trips. We have stayed at Traube several times because of the excellent service. And of course as a foodie, I have to eat in the famous restaurant at least once. Would you believe that I didn’t eat any Black Forest cake which I love. I did have the wonderful cherries as a side with pastries each morning though. I just had to include a photo of the beautiful table set for breakfast…the lovely embroidered red rooster was on the linen napkins as well. I’m glad you liked it as much as I did.

Gosh, the Traube Tonbach hotel looks like a real find. Nice looking room, and the food is fabulous! Love that breakfast buffet – so many choices. That crowing rooster is such a nice touch! I’ve been to Germany only once, and then for an extremely brief trip to Berlin (such great museums there!). As a breakfast fan, I loved the difference between the German verison and ours – not much biscuits and gravy on that one. If you get into southern Bavaria, consider the Eibsee Hotel at the base of the Zugspitze.
Hi Larry, I haven’t found any biscuits and gravy so far but all things are possible. Thank you for your suggestion about the hotel. We will be staying near the Zugspitze on this trip but on the Austrian side in the town of Lermoos.

We had a seven course tasting menu for lunch prepared by Chef Wohlfahrt but he insisted we must have one additional course. With several little gifts from the kitchen, pre and post desserts, we ate like royalty. Needless to say we didn’t have dinner that evening. Whenever I research for hotels in an area, I try to find a hotel with kingsize beds as that is what my husband is used to. I was just in the black forest during my stay in Europe in the last 2 weeks trekking through it but we needed to stay in a small town called Hiltrup for work. We stayed in a very dismal Spartan like hotel called the pritzenbruck which I poetically nicknamed the “prison brook”. I guess there is always next time… Take Care, BAM
Hi Bam, You gave me such a chuckle with the “prison brook” description of your hotel. I’ve only stayed in one hotel like that years ago. The bath was down the hall and the towel was about the size of a dish towel. I hope that there will be a next time at a wonderful hotel in your future.

Oh…it was real fancy. It was the second floor of an office building. LOL. I had to wear my raincoat down the hall to the shower since it wasn’t in the room and then the lights went out halfway down. I had to feel my way down the rest of the hall until I found a light switch. You definitely have to keep a sense of humor when you travel. Hope you have a nice weekend as well.
I’m in love with that rooster linen! I would purchase one as a souvenir and eat breakfast on it every morning just for the wonderful memories this would give! Any hotel that has your stamp of approval, Karen, is one I would go to for certain. If they can please an excellent chef like yourself… they are top-notch, I’d say! xx

Hi Ming, Traube is truly a home away from home…no matter what room you stay in. What makes it so special is how wonderful everyone treats you. German breads and rolls are so delicious and the hotel has such a great selection. I didn’t have any Black Forest cake and it is one of my favorites…there were just so many tempting desserts to try. I did have some of the pitted cherries every morning with pastries.
So ironic that whenever I read Black Forest, I expected a picture of a gorgeous luscious cake! The food and decor look beautiful, no doubt you’re feasting on some more incredible small goods and charcuterie as I write this now 🙂
Hi Alli, I think that most people are like you and always think of the cake. I have an absolutely wonderful recipe for Black Forest cake that I will have to make and post about when I’m planning a party. It is too decadent of a cake to have in the house when there are only two people. LOL. Yes, I have just returned from having a lovely cream of potato soup with speck (cured ham), homemade croutons and drizzled with pumpkin seed oil for lunch.
Beautiful scenery – I think I passed NEAR the black forest once but didn’t actually see it proper. It looks wonderful, and that hotel looks fantastic. I dig breakfasts like that… I’m a big fan of breads, cheeses and meats for breakfast, with a healthy serving of fruits and sliced veg too. It’s hard to find such breakfasts at hotels in France. They’re HUGE fans of sweet breakfasts… that meal seems to consist of chocolate-filled pastries, sweet cereals and jam 😦
Hi Charles, Would you believe that we will usually choose to stay in the Black Forest of Germany and take day trips over to the Alsace region of France because my husband loves the German breakfasts so much. I find that many of the hotels in Germany have absolutely delicious croissants and and pastries. I’m a big fan of having one of the seeded rolls with a very ripe cheese followed by a very small pastry for breakfast. I’m going to have to do a lot of walking to keep the pounds off.

What a gorgeous hotel! I am impressed that the hotel owner and family takes such a personal interest in how you enjoy the stay. Except for B & Bs I’ve never had that experience. I love traveling with you, Karen. First class all the way. Truly that hotel is a gem…you rarely see such thorough attention to all details these days and while modern, it seems to have an old world aesthetic as well. And the food…wow! The only time I’ve seen a breakfast buffet remotely that extensive was in the Hotel Del Coronado. I feel like I just took a little trip to the Black Forest and feel more relaxed than I did before reading! 🙂 I’m excited to see where we go next!

I’m really enjoying “our” trip and it certainly looks like you’re eating well – yikes that breakfast is awesome. My husband was stationed in Germany many years ago & I guess they used to do practice stuff in tanks in the Black Forest. Apparently they weren’t very good driving their tanks & some of the trees got damaged, I’m sure there were hangovers involved. I’m not sure how much the U.S. had to reimburse the Germans, but he did say that they take their Black Forest very seriously. Glad to see it still survived the army!
Hi Diane, I really had to laugh at your comment. I keep seeing military speed limit signs for trucks and tanks…maybe they were just traveling a little over the limit. Believe me…the Black Forest is still beautiful despite the little damage that they might have caused. That really isn’t the case…some of the most wonderful dishes I have ever had have been in the wonderful restaurants of Germany. You will continue to see that in my posts from the rest of the trip.

Very nice article and pictures. You have indeed chosen one of the best hotels that you can find here in Germany. We’ve been there a couple of times as hospitality and food – especially in the “Schwarzwaldstube” – are perfect. You might know that Baiersbronn does not only have the “Traube Tonbach” but also the “Bareiss”, another 5 star hotel with many superb restaurants. It seems that both hotels try to surpass each other in every aspect. Nice competition if guests can’t decide anymore which one to chose… (However – and although I love the Traube a lot – I consider the breakfast in “Bareiss” to be even better…)

I know the reputation of Bareiss but when you have a hotel that feels like you are returning to visit good friends that is where you like to go back to. So happy that you enjoyed the post and hope that you return. I will be doing more posts on Germany as well as Austria. It is nice to meet another foodie…especially one from Germany.
What beautiful photos…they certainly dispel the notion I think many of us may have of Germany as more dark and grey and yes, still a bit foreboding. I’m of German ancestry and one day hope to visit; maybe Munich it must be!
Hi Barbara, Thank you for stopping by for a visit. My goodness…I certainly don’t think that people would view Germany as dark, grey and foreboding. As you can see from the photos, Germany is an absolutely beautiful country. Of course any place in the world will have grey weather from time to time, but it is not the normal in most of my visits to Germany. The warmth of the people always make any visitor feel very welcomed. If you have a German ancestry (which I do not), I would think that you would enjoy visiting this lovely region.

Hi Judy, I have to agree with you. We have enjoyed visiting this hotel several times and it just keeps getting better and better. It is always hard to say goodbye to everyone that has made your visit so memorable.
Talk about a wonderful hotel… I don’t know what is better the beautiful dinner or the Charcuterie for breakfast?!!
