A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words

A picture is worth a thousand words so this post is short as my pictures will speak for themselves. I would like to  share what I consider the best photos from Back Road Journal during 2012. It was a year that included gardening at our homes in both New Hampshire and Maine, a road trip down the east coast of the US, a trip to Europe and lots of good food…both created at home and enjoyed at wonderful restaurants. I chose photos that received a lot of comments from you, my loyal readers and I thank you very much.

By visiting my blog each time I post, you have made Back Road Journal what it is today and for that I have to give each one of you a big “thank you“. I have enjoyed all your comments and compliments…I hope you have enjoyed this past year as much as I have. I’m looking forward to this new year where I will be creating new recipes, planning travels near and far, and gardening throughout our short New England growing season. I hope you will enjoy visiting my blog during this year’s journey. Happy New Year to all!

    1. Thank you Kay, for your lovely compliment. I’m glad you enjoy my blog and I always look forward to your visits. Have a great New Year!

  1. Hi Karen, and a very happy new year to you!
A lovely selection, and some great reminders – you had a busy year! Love dthe shot of the steam rising off the lake, so evocative.
Looking forward to seeing what our respective 2013s bring us – I’m wishing for joy and peace, and some green fingers !!

    1. Happy New Year, Claire. I’m glad you enjoyed the photos…the steam coming off the lake was cold but fun to capture. That photo was taken shortly before we closed the Maine cottage for the year. I don’t think you need to wish for green fingers…your gardens seen to do very well.

    1. Thank you Marie, I’m glad you liked the choice of photos…I thought they captured the year well. I’m looking forward to your visits this year. Happy New Year.

  2. What a wonderful year full of fun and great food. Happy New Year and I hope 2013 is packed full of much of the same.

  3. I nominated you for the Versatile Blogger Award because your blog has inspired me. Thank you! 🙂 Check back at my blog for a badge if you would like to accept. If not, I completely understand that some people have already gotten this and some are just too busy. Thank you for inspiring me anyway!

    1. Thank you Julien, for your nomination for the Versatile Blogger Award. It is very nice to know that I inspire you…that is a lovely compliment. Even though I have already received this award, it is as important to me as the first time. I so appreciate when another blogger enjoys what I post. Have a wonderful New Year.

  4. Thank you for sharing, I have learned a great deal from your post, travelled to places with you and had a grand time, looking forward to reading and learning more in 2013.
How did you get your photos to all line up so nicely?

    1. Thank you Norma, for your lovely compliment…I always enjoy when you stop by. It was a fun year and I’m glad you enjoyed it. As to the photo, I guess you could say it was through the magic of WP. It took most of the day, a lot of mumbling, lots of changes on the settings and media portion of the dashboard and many trips to the forum section on WP. I’m glad that you liked the end result…hopefully I’ll be able to do it again.

  5. What a fantastic collage of memories and stunning images. It is a lot of work too. Your blog is always a treat. Take good care and Happy New Year! c

    1. Happy New Year, Celi. I’m glad you liked the collage. It really was fun looking back at the year through photos. And yes, it took more work than I expected. I’m happy that you enjoy my blog as I do yours.

    1. Hi Tandy, I’m glad you like the photo of the tomatoes. I think I ate tomatoes almost everyday this past summer once they ripened in the garden. I look forward to your visits in the coming year. All the best to you, as well.

    1. Hi Eva, I like your wish. Right now it is sunny, in the 20’s with about a foot of snow on the ground. We will see how winter goes…a long spring and summer sound good right now.

    1. Hi Linda, I’m glad that you enjoyed looking back at the past year through my photos. One of the nicest things about last year was getting a chance to spend time with you and your nice husband. I hope we get a chance to do it again this year…we have a lot in common. Happy New Year!

    1. Thanks Greg, for your nice compliment. You and me both…when it comes to the tomatoes. With a foot of snow on the ground, it seems a long way off until we have garden fresh tomatoes. Happy New Year to you and Katherine.

  9. Karen, what a wonderful New Year Greeting – with your view on your year … magical photos. Just stunning. If I could pick from your year … would it Long Lake – colorful chairs – lily of the valley and
Seafood Agnolotti With Shrimp .. fantastic and thanks for sharing your colorful year with me … loved every minute of it.

    1. Hi Viveka, I’m glad that you enjoyed the post…it was a fun way to look back on last year. I always appreciate when you stop by and your lovely compliments. Have a wonderful year, my friend.

  10. Great pictures! I always like it when people pick out the ones they think are the best (or like the most). Everyone has a different sense of what’s “good” and it helps me know a person better to see what they like and are proud of. Thanks for your blog—- it’s engrossing and entertaining and I thoroughly enjoy coming here. Happy New Year!

    1. Hi John, Thank you for your compliment. I’m glad that you enjoyed the photos. It was hard choosing my favorites but I chose many by the comments I received. I’m happy that you like following my blog. I always enjoy your visits and appreciate your kind words.

    1. Thank you so much Bishop, for your very kind words. I really appreciate your compliment…I’m glad that you enjoy following my blog.

  11. I don’t know which picture I love best … the flowers (especially the lily of the valley), the food (lobster pasta) or the architectural shots (old Charleston) or … well, it’s just difficult. It’s hard to believe they were all posted in 2012. Here’s hoping 2013 in just as fun and exciting.

    Happy New Year.

    1. Hi Boleyn, I’m glad you liked the photos. It was hard deciding but the lily of the valley was one of my favorites. Maybe it is because took so many shots, laying on the cold ground to capture the tiny flower among thick ground cover. I’m with you…I’m looking forward to another year of fun. Thank you for your wish and nice compliment, as always.

    1. Thank you Kat, for your nice compliment…I’m glad you enjoyed the photos. I agree with you about presentation when it comes to serving a meal. Have a wonderful New Year as well.

  12. your spectacular lobster pasta is my favo food and the mountains my favo scenery. great post and great blogging year! and you gotta teach me one day how to place links over the pictures, looks so professional!

    1. Thank you Barbara, for your lovely compliment. I’m glad that you enjoyed the post of my favorite photos. I was thrilled when we had the snow in October. The sun came out the next morning and I got that lovely photo of the mountain. As far as the links over the pictures, I’m not a techie person so someone else might be able to explain it more clearly. When I am uploading a photo to my WP media file, I add my caption under Title and also under Caption before I insert Media to my post. I hope that helps. I’m happy that you liked the result…it was a challenge but I was happy with with the result.

    1. Thank you Gary, for your nice comment. They are always appreciated as you were one of my first follows. Hugs and best wishes to you for the new year as well.

  13. Such a beautiful look back on what was a great year for you both, Karen. You put a lot of work into the presentation of your photos and it shows, Karen. Very nicely done. Seeing the tomatoes and loon reminded me of how poorly Summer started in Maine for you and your neighbors at the lake. Things certainly did turn around, thank heavens.
Wishing you and yours every happiness in 2013.

    1. Thank you John, for your lovely compliment. I’m glad that you enjoyed this look back through my photos. You have a wonderful memory…the year in Maine started out with the worst flooding in years but we were lucky. Once the water receded, we had only lost a few plants. Our vegetable garden was a source of many delicious meals.Thank you for your nice wish, I hope you have a great year as well.

  17. What a joy to click on the computer for a recollection of all this wealth of memories: methinks I ‘arrived’ on site about your late spring/summer and have enjoyed every post since, both the familar ones of Europe and the ‘new’ from your home state. Have to admit the composition of your recent New Year’s celebration photo is my romantic favourite : love that tie on the salver . . . 🙂 !

I’m happy that you enjoyed the photos and are looking forward to my journeys in this upcoming year. The next trip is to Florida where I’m going to take you to one of my favorite Italian restaurants.

    1. Hi Katy, Thank you for stopping by for a visit and your nice compliment. I’m happy that you enjoyed my blog…I’m looking forward to your return. I use a Canon Eos Rebel T3 for most of my photos unless I’m in a restaurant and then I use a Canon point and shot.

  24. I can’t imagine how you picked your top photos. I would have struggled so – they are all so fantastic. You did a great job though. I recall most of these and they are among my favorites. The lobster tails have me drooling way too early in the morning. 🙂

    1. Hi Kristy, It was more difficult than I thought picking the photos. I forgot one of my favorites and probably the most commented on…the caper blossom. I do remember that you liked my posts involving the lobsters last year. Thank you for your nice compliment.

    1. Thank you Dana, for your lovely compliment…I’m so glad that you enjoyed the photos. It is nice to know that you are looking forward to our new adventures.

  27. What a perfect way to sum up the year of a terrific blog. I always look forward to reading your posts. To start the new year off I’ve passed along the REALITY Award to you for such a wonderful and interesting blog. Wishing you the best in 2013.

      1. Hi Diane, I’m glad that you enjoyed my summary of the year through photos that readers seemed to enjoy the most. I appreciate you nice compliment.

  28. Happy new year Karen ! I am ashamed to say that I only recognise a few of your photos above, which means I need to visit more often ! But I LOVE the first two snow/icy photos (perhaps because living here in Singapore you don’t often get anything remotely like this so I have to live my life vicariously through the eyes of others :))

    1. Hi Carolyn, I’m happy whenever you get a chance to visit…thank you. The first two photos we taken last year on the first day of spring. I’m glad that you enjoy seeing the seasons through my eyes. I used to be like you when I lived in the Florida Keys where occasionally you couldn’t wear shorts in the winter. 🙂 Wishing you all the best this new year.

  29. Thank you, Karen, for offering us such a fantastic aesthetic feast! It’s nice to recognise some of the photos, reminding me of certain fascinating posts from 2012. Happy New Year!

    1. Thank you Jeannee, for your compliment. I had a good time looking back at the year through everyones favorite photos. I loved the colored stools…glad the bar hadn’t opened and no one was sitting in them.

    1. Hi Carol, I have to agree with you. The snow is slowly starting to melt here in New Hampshire but the Maine garden is really buried in snow. I am eagerly awaiting tomato season.
