A Splash Of Summer Color

A Splash Of Summer Color was a most welcomed sight when I returned home to New Hampshire for a few days. My day lilies were in full bloom and seemed to be welcoming me home like outstretched arms. When you see the beautiful blooms, keep in mind that they have had no care at all. There have been very hot days lately and the only water has been rain provided by nature. Once planted, day lilies seem to take care of themselves.

Each summer while my husband and I spend most our time in Maine, our New Hampshire plants and trees have to take care of themselves. In our absence the lilies have been thriving.  Their huge and showy blooms were the first thing we saw when we drove up to our home and they were beautiful with a little morning dew still on their petals.

Day lilies are hardy plants and don’t mind being moved. My twenty year old plants were originally dug from fields at a day lily farm in Massachusetts and planted in a small garden at our former townhouse in New Hampshire. When we moved to our home at the orchard, I dug part of them up to make the move with us. Next spring, I’m going to dig them up, divide and replant them. I’ll take some of the divisions up to Maine and plant them in the gardens there so that we can enjoy their beautiful large blooms during the summer. I think some of my well-travelled lilies will enjoy their new lakeside location.

The New Dawn roses must have bloomed like crazy while we were gone. I love their wonderful fragrance and was pleased that there were still some blossoms to enjoy.

I love the soft look of a fully opened rose. It’s colors begin to fade but the fragrance lingers. They remind me of a romantic old fashioned Valentine’s Day card.

I know that people think that gardens need a lot of tending to have beautiful flowers but that is not always the case. Once plants have been well established, you don’t have to devote all your time taking care of them especially if nature lends a helping hand. Of course, they all appreciate a little tender loving care for time to time but you don’t have to spend hours on them to have some wonderful blossoms around your home.

During our next trip back to New Hampshire, I’ll take you out to the orchard to see how the apples and pears are coming along. It doesn’t seem so long ago that the orchard was in full bloom. If you missed that post, you can see the trees in bloom here.

  1. Very gorgeous lilies. I had to get rid of mine as the deer refuse to leave them alone no matter what I did to protect them. Beautiful climbing rose, is it climbing on an arched trellis that you can walk under?

    1. Hi Norma, It was nice to be home for a few days while the lilies were blooming their little hearts out. We have so many deer in our apple orchard but they have never bothered the lilies. It appears they would rather munch on the apples. 🙂 The roses grow up the side of my garden shed and along one side of the picket fence around my garden.

  2. Excellent shots of your blooms Karen. Beverly likes the Day Lillie’s and has the driveway lined with them.

  3. How delightful. I so very enjoyed this, as we are in the fifth year of a drought here and the last couple of weeks the temperatures have been 104 – 107. Our garden has been left to die and the landscape looks horrible. Local lakes have gone dry and it is just sad, sad, sad. In face we have been discussing taking a trip to New Hampshire and Vermont to look for a home. Thanks for making the day brighter………you always do!

    1. I’m glad that you enjoyed the post, Tin Man. I appreciate your kind words, as always. Your weather has been a real scorcher…sorry about your garden. I think you would enjoy making your home in New England.

  4. What a wonderful way to be welcomed home. Your roses remind me of the ones my grandmother used to have in her garden when I was a child. I spent half of the time that I was with her with my nose in one of her big pink roses.

    1. Hi Karen, It really was a nice welcome to see my day lilies all in bloom. I love the old fashioned roses, they have such a wonderful fragrance that many of the new varieties don’t have. I’m glad the post reminded you of your grandmother’s garden.

  5. Those day lilies do look wonderful Karen, thanks for sharing them with us. I simply cannot believe that September is just around the corner. We’ve been spending a lot of time at the cottage too this year, even though its one of the chilliest summer we’ve had. We’re heading back to the city today but are planning to come back Wednesday/Thursday again!

    1. Hi Eva, I’m glad that you enjoyed the photos. I agree with you about how quickly summer is passing. Enjoy your cottage while you can, we will be closing ours done the end of September this year and that will be here before we know it.

    1. Hi Mandy, I’m glad to know you liked the post. I agree with you about the day lilies and roses at our New Hampshire home…they are beautiful.

  6. I agree re the tender care of gardens..Spring and fall are the real deals care wise.. but at this time of year..the maintenace can be little 🙂
Love gardening..what a Godsend to be able to do it..
    Envy your apples and pears!

    1. Hi Monique, I do enjoy my gardens and I know you do as well. We do have our spring and fall chores in the garden but the rewards during summer make it all worthwhile. 🙂 After checking the trees in the orchard, I think there is going to be a large crop of apples this year. I never know about the pears as porcupines love them as much as I do.

  7. Love all the color! The roses remind me of my mom’s garden. She’s always had at least a dozen rose bushes in the various places we’ve lived. Absolutely gorgeous when they’re in bloom 🙂

  8. It must be the year for lilies, another friend mentioned how well theirs were doing — large, gorgeous blooms with little care. What a lovely welcome that must have been! Thank you for sharing your summer colors with us. 🙂

    1. Hi Judy, I have had more blooms on my lilies both in New Hampshire and Maine this year. I think the lilies liked all the rain we had in June.

    1. Hi Donna, I was pleasantly surprised when I returned home and saw all the day lilies in bloom. I believe that because we had all the rain in June that they bloomed later and longer this year. My lilies in Maine still have blossoms as well. They are making up for my hydrangeas that have only had a few blossoms.

  9. This is gorgeous. You have so many different varietals it must be breathtaking to stand back and admire. I think I would be running out with a camera! And to think of the yellow one over six inches wide…stunning. Love this.

    1. Hi Tiny, I think we are a lot alike…that is exactly what I did when we arrived home. The yellow lilies flank each side of my garden gate and are so pretty. I’m glad you enjoyed the photos…thank you!

    1. Hi Angie, I’m glad you enjoyed the photos of our New Hampshire garden. I do love the lilies and was happy to see their blossoms when we returned home for a few days.

  10. I have a single lily planting in the front but this year I got an abundance of leaves and only a few flower stalks. In comparison to the variety you have, it seems to sad. The roses are lovely … the large blossoms seem very Victorian … velvety and lush.

    1. Hi Boleyn, I believe this was the best year I have ever seen as far as the number of blooms on my lilies. We had so much rain in May and June and the plants really thrived. Hopefully all the leaves on your lilies will lead to a good blooming season next year. I agree with you about the roses…they do have a wonderful Victorian feel about them.

    1. Thank you Amy, I’m glad that you enjoyed the day lilies, they have such showy blossoms. The soft pink of the roses have a totally different feel to me, soft and romantic.

  11. I’m sure your plants enjoyed seeing you again! I love day lilies — they’re so hardy, and once established thrive (although like any plant they appreciate water if it hasn’t rained for awhile). Yours look terrific. Great roses, too. We’re growing Knockouts — very tough plants with loads of red, red flowers. Fun post — thanks.

    1. Hi John, I’m happy to know that you enjoyed this post…thank you for your compliment. I was pleasantly surprised by all the lilie blossoms when I arrived home. It was like they knew I was coming home for a few days and put on a real show. I can’t believe how hardy lilies are once they are established. My plants are twenty years old…they have been in their last spot for six or seven years. I’m sure your Knockout roses are outstanding. Red roses are always beautiful.

  12. Hey Karen,

I’m also a daylily aficionado myself. After moving to the nursing home, a master gardener friend expanded an old weedy iris bed and planted a bed of 50 smaller varieties like my favorite ;Pandora’s Box’ which were donated by a company I featured in one of my columns. Then he created a bed with about forty of his favorites that he had hybridized and it’s a blast to see varieties he and I are the only ones to see. He then expanded the bed to plant another 20 varieties. He planted a 100 of a mix of jonquils between them that my Mum bought. He and his wife occasionally stop by to weed.

I was horrified to learn a massive new construction area will eradicate that space but the director is having the landscape company create a a more prominently placed bed where I can incorporate at least 40 of Jock’s hybrids,

I know I’m so very blessed to have Jock and his wife Sandy in my life. I know he has given me so much joy and no doubt countless residents and visitors.

    1. Hi Patrick, I’m always pleased when you stop by with a comment on my gardening posts as you are such a knowledgeable gardener…thank you. I can just imagine how beautiful the daylily beds that you speak of must be when in full bloom. I went back on your site to view Pandora’s Box…it is stunning and its colors would go beautifully with the colors in my garden…I must look for it.

  13. I love day lilies. They are among my favorite flowers. I’ve always been partial to the orange ones, but the pinks are just gorgeous as well. What fun to come home and see your house in full bloom. 🙂

    1. Hi Kristy, I’m really happy to know that you like the orange Tiger Lilies like I do. Many gardeners think they are common but I love their sunny bright color. 🙂 I was thrilled to return home for a few days and see everything blooming. So many summers, they bloom while we are in Maine.

  14. Karen, you live in a paradise of wonderful flowers, water … vegetables – your photos are just amazing … the beauty around you is so intense. So delightful. Have it been raining before you took the photos of those magnificent lilies – or have you just watered them .. there is water drops on some of them that makes the photos even more intense. I more of a lily person than a rose person … but I love taking photos of roses, because every rose has different shades on the same branch.

    1. Hi Viveka, I agree with you that we do live in a wonderful area. I’m glad that you enjoyed the photos…thank you as always for your lovely compliment. You are very observant…there are water droplets from morning dew on some of the lily petals. 🙂

  15. What beautiful flowers and there’s so much colour. I do like the sound of hardy plants that don’t require a lot of fuss – just perfect when you can’t be there all the time tending to them xx

    1. Hi Charlie, The perennial plants in my New Hampshire gardens are very hardy and simple to take of which fits our lifestyle perfectly. I’m glad you enjoyed the post…thank you for your nice compliment.

    1. Hi Giovanna, I thought this post might be interesting to readers who would enjoy having a flower garden. Lilies are very hardy, don’t need a lot of special care and make a lovely and colorful garden. I’m happy you enjoyed the post…thank you.

  16. Your beautiful flowers remind me of my Nana’s yard. She had a green thumb and loved lilies – her favorite were Tiger Lilies that grew at the end of the porch. I could smell the roses while looking at the pictures of the fabulous full blooms!

    1. Hi Kelli, I’m happy that my photos reminded you of the lilies that your Nana grew. The roses do have a lovely fragrance that you would enjoy. 🙂

  17. Now that’s a beautiful welcoming the lilies staged for you, Karen. You’ve really selected some beautiful varieties to brighten your garden. Do your climbing roses bloom all season or only part of it. When well-established, they can look stunning when in full bloom. I love how a slight breeze can cause the petals to fall like snowflakes.

    1. Hi John, That was exactly how I felt. 🙂 Most summers I miss the blooms while we are at the lake. I’m glad you enjoyed seeing the different varieties that I have. My New Dawn roses bloom from early summer and into the fall on the old canes. I know what you mean about the petals falling like snowflakes in the wind.

  18. Aren’t day lilies grand? Though I always curse the person who started the myth that a bank of them will shade out all the weeds. They were lying. 🙂

    1. Hi Michelle, I’m glad you agree with me about day lilies. You gave me a chuckle…grass and weeds have no problem growing amongst my lilies. 🙂

  19. Look at those day lilies and those roses! Beautiful.
We enjoy day lilies too, My day lilies struggle because the deer enjoy eating them.

    1. Thank you Velva, for your nice comment…I glad you enjoyed the photos. I’m sorry to hear that you have problems with deer eating your lilies. We have a lot of deer that come into our orchard but they never bother my lilies. I guess they are discriminating eaters and prefer apples to lilies. 🙂

    1. Hi Laura, I’m with you about having flower gardens that don’t require lots of care. It is nice to know that you enjoy posts about the orchard…I’ll do another soon.

  20. Your beautiful lillies and roses literally brought a smile to my face this morning Karen. Gorgeous! Have a wonderful day my friend! ♥

  21. I’m so glad to have come back to my blog & be able to see your lovely photos, I have only a few lilies in my garden, but after looking at all the comments on yours I never realised there were so many varieties, & mine too look after themselves while I’m away for most of the summer. I love your New Dawn rose, Just what I need for the new arch I want hubby to build for next spring. thank you Karen.

    1. Thank you for your nice comment Barbara, I’m happy that you enjoyed the photos. I’m glad that you agree about lilies more or less taking care of themselves. With so many beautiful varieties…they are an effortless perennial to grow. I’ve been very happy with the New Dawn roses…they have a lovely fragrance and I love their pale pink color.

    1. Thank you Tanya, I’m happy that you enjoyed the post. I think that lilies would do well in Spain. They are drought tolerant, aren’t fussy about the soil they are planted in, and there are hundreds of varieties. They are a perfect perennial as far as I’m concerned.

    1. Hi Hester, The New Dawn roses are a lovely shade of pink. I believe they have a very old fashioned and romantic look about them. I’m glad you are looking forward to a visit to the orchard. 🙂

  22. I have always loved flowers but only in the nature; never cut in a vase, so as long as I have no garden, I will be happy admiring them on your beautiful photos. I can almost smell the lilies’ inebriating aroma.

  23. Karen, what a truly dleightful post – these pictures of your amazing daylilies and roses are truly amazing – I love the details and the different colors in all the pictures – thank you for a lovely tour!
I also wanted to thank you for your very kind comments and the nice birthday whishes – you are such a kind person and I am delighted to have learned that the wonderful “gravatar” picture of you was taken in Bruges of all places – how wonderful!
Continue to have a fabulous summer!

    1. Thank you Andrea, for your sweet comment. I’m glad that you enjoyed the photos of the daylilies and roses. I was please that they were in bloom when we went home for a few days. Yes, my gravator photo was taken on a trip to Bruges and your post brought back wonderful memories of that trip. 🙂

  24. I think this post has convinced me to consider putting some day lilies into my garden! Excellent timing as I was wondering how to fill a certain space, and now I know with what! Thanks Karen 🙂

    1. Hi Dana, I think an addition of lilies to your lovely gardens would be nice…I believe you will enjoy them. I’m happy that this post was timely.

    1. Hi Diane, I’m glad that you enjoyed the photos of the roses. Good luck with your division of the lilies. I’ll have a bit of a project next spring dividing my lilies as they have really multiplied.

  25. Good Morning Karen, Thank you so much for visiting my blog and leaving such lovely comments.
I love daylilies, I have always grown them in my garden, but since moving to the north of England I struggle to grow them as we have so much rain that the daylily does not seem to cope well. I will not give up, I will try one of your varieties because they are so beautiful. I especially love the yellow and mauve lily.
How lovely, I have a New Dawn climbing rose in my garden as well, I planted it earlier in the year, during the Spring and it has blossomed so many times throughout the summer…. they are beautiful roses.
Karen I have really enjoyed my visit so I have subscribed to your emails. I look forward to getting to know you.
    Best Wishes
    Daphne

    1. Hi Daphne, Thank you for stopping by to visit my blog. Daylilies tend to like a lot of water so it might be a soil problem at your new home. Perhaps you could try amending the soil with some sand for better drainage. I’m happy that you New Dawn rose is growing well…I agree they are a beautiful rose. I appreciate not only your lovely compliment but that you subscribed to my blog. I look forward to your return…thank you.

    1. Hi Lidia, I’m with you about the love of roses. I wish I could grow them at our cottage in Maine as well but don’t have a spot where they would get the proper sunlight.

  26. That rose is a real beauty, Karen 🙂 I’m looking at 24 dark red ones sitting on my hearth at the minute. We didn’t grow them though. They were for our wedding anniversary.

    1. Hi Johanna, I’m happy that you enjoyed the roses. How lovely that you have beautiful red ones to celebrate your wedding anniversary. I hope you have many more wonderful years together.

  27. What a beautiful way to be welcomed home. Your flowers are beautiful and I am quite envious! I had to leave all my flowers when we moved to CO 3 yrs ago. I just haven’t had the energy to garden. I can’t wait to see your orchard photos.

    Nazneen

    1. Hi Nazneen, I was pleasantly surprised to arrive home and see the lilies in bloom. Many summers, I miss their wonderful flowers while we are in Maine. I’m sure you miss the gardens of your former home. It won’t be long before the apples will be red and ready for picking. 🙂

  28. Karen, these flowers are absolutely breathtaking. I love bringing home flowers from the farmers market. I also stop to pick up some for my mom as well. Thank you for putting a smile on my face today 🙂

    1. Thank you for your kind words, Kay. I think it is lovely that you buy flowers for your mother, it sounds like you have a close relationship which is wonderful.

  29. The flowers are beautiful. It is so nice that there are plants out there that do not need to be babied. I live in the dessert, so plants like that really help with the water supply. Thanks for sharing!

    1. Hi Nature, I’m glad that you enjoyed the post. Consideration should be given to the amount of water needed for plants, especially when living in an environmentally sensitive area.

    1. Hi Juliana, It was a very pleasant surprise to see my lilies in full bloom. I’m glad that you enjoyed the post…thank you. Have a lovely week as well. 🙂

    1. Hi Meg, Lilies are such a hardy plant and take being transplanted very well. Lilies do add such lovely color to a summer garden…I’m glad I brought some of them with us when we moved.

    1. Thank you for your nice compliment, Darryl. I’m happy that you enjoyed the photos. Fall colors will slowly be creeping in soon as our lows here in Maine have been in the high 40’s and low 50’s at night.

    1. Hi Hannah, I believe that you really don’t need a green thumb to have wonderful blooms from day lilies. You should try growing one plant next spring…planting it where it will get full sun. I think you will be pleasantly surprised. It may not bloom the first year from the shock of being transplanted but it will grow strong and then will bloom successfully after that.

  30. Your flowers are spectacular, Karen. Thank goodness for varieties like day lilies…I have such a black thumb, but they still bloom every summer 🙂

    1. Thank you Liz, for your lovely compliment. I decided to do this post to encourage readers to try growing day lilies. They are beautiful and basically grow themselves. I’m sure you really don’t have a black thumb, by the way. 🙂

  31. Such beautiful blooms, Karen. We have both lilies and roses in our yard (but not nearly the stunning variety that you shared with us here!) Thank you for sharing!

    1. Thank you Monet, I’m happy that you enjoyed the photos. It seems we have a lot of the same tastes…I’m sure your yard is lovely when in bloom.

    1. Thank you Anne, for your nice compliment. I’m glad that you enjoyed the post. I do have to agree with you about how pretty the blooms were.

    1. Hi Francesca, It is so nice to hear from you. I’m happy to know that you enjoy the photos…thank you. It sounds like your grandmother was a lot of fun. Your Barbie dolls must have been lovely dressed in bright orange tiger lily petals. 🙂

  32. Your flowers look amazingly beautiful Karen! I wish I had the time to grow such beautiful plants, but my life is so full of work, child, husband etc. that I really cannot assume another task!

    1. Thank you for your lovely compliment, Katerina. I’m happy that you enjoyed the post. Life can indeed be hectic when you have so much going on in life. Perhaps in the future, you will be able to enjoy a few of these flowers…the lilies need very little care. 🙂

    1. Hi Ann, I was amazed the first time I traveled to New England and saw lilies growing wild alongside the roads. Some people refer to the orange tiger lilies as ditch lilies and think they are too common but I love them. Their lovely blooms add a sunny spot to life. 🙂

    1. Hi Maureen, I’m glad to know that you enjoyed the photos from my New Hampshire garden. I do enjoy seeing it in bloom. Thank you for your nice compliment.

    1. Thank you Mary, for your lovely compliment. I’m glad that you enjoyed the photos. The weekend has started wonderfully, it is beautiful at the lake. I hope you are having a great weekend as well.

  33. We have day lilies in our garden too and I never have to do anything to them. But your array of colours is stunning. New Dawn was the very first rose that I ever bought for my very first garden many moons ago. I still love it.

    1. Hi Suzanne, It sounds like we have similar tastes in flowers. Don’t you just love that lilies basically take care of themselves. I bought all of my lilies years ago from a women who raised lilies exclusively and I do love the color combinations that I got from her.

    1. Thank you Lilly Sue, I’m happy to know that you enjoyed the photos. I would think someone with your lovely name would enjoy this beautiful flower. 🙂

    1. Hi Pattie, Thank you for stopping by for a visit and your nice comment. I’m glad you enjoyed the photos. I love the mauve lily too!

  34. I love day lilies, Karen. I have a few yellow and orange in my garden, but I love these other colors! And the size of your flowers seems really impressive to me, too. You must just drink up all these colors and hold onto them all winter. Our day lilies go completely dormant, too. Our warmer winter weather doesn’t affect their natural growth patterns, and I get excited when they begin to reappear also. The rose is a gorgeous bloom also! 🙂

    1. Hi Debra, I’m happy to know that you grow and enjoy day lilies like I do. Yes, I especially enjoy all the colorful summer blooms because we have such a short growing season.

  35. Beautiful flowers. Lillies are one of my favorite flowers. The other favorite being orchids!

    Julie @ This Gal cooks

    1. Hi Julie, Thank you for stopping by for a visit and your nice compliment…I’m glad like enjoyed the photos of the lilies. I used to live in Florida and had wonderful orchids…they are a favorite of mine as well.

  36. BEAUTIFUL! I find lilies of all varieties hardy and easy to keep – and they are always “volunteering” themselves to make more!! We actually plant all of our white easter lilies in the ground as soon as we can dig and they surprise us every year by reverting back to their natural color. (apparently they are hybridized to be white – or so I have heard – either that or our soil is weird!)

    1. Thank you Carol, I’m glad you enjoyed the photos. Lilies are indeed a very hardy plant. It is interesting that your white lilies revert back to their natural color.

    1. Thank you Carolyn, The lilies were a nice surprise to come home to and you are right…they were very fragrant. I’m glad you enjoyed the photos.
