A Splash Of Summer Color was a most welcomed sight when I returned home to New Hampshire for a few days. My day lilies were in full bloom and seemed to be welcoming me home like outstretched arms. When you see the beautiful blooms, keep in mind that they have had no care at all. There have been very hot days lately and the only water has been rain provided by nature. Once planted, day lilies seem to take care of themselves.
Each summer while my husband and I spend most our time in Maine, our New Hampshire plants and trees have to take care of themselves. In our absence the lilies have been thriving. Their huge and showy blooms were the first thing we saw when we drove up to our home and they were beautiful with a little morning dew still on their petals.
Day lilies are hardy plants and don’t mind being moved. My twenty year old plants were originally dug from fields at a day lily farm in Massachusetts and planted in a small garden at our former townhouse in New Hampshire. When we moved to our home at the orchard, I dug part of them up to make the move with us. Next spring, I’m going to dig them up, divide and replant them. I’ll take some of the divisions up to Maine and plant them in the gardens there so that we can enjoy their beautiful large blooms during the summer. I think some of my well-travelled lilies will enjoy their new lakeside location.
The New Dawn roses must have bloomed like crazy while we were gone. I love their wonderful fragrance and was pleased that there were still some blossoms to enjoy.
I love the soft look of a fully opened rose. It’s colors begin to fade but the fragrance lingers. They remind me of a romantic old fashioned Valentine’s Day card.
I know that people think that gardens need a lot of tending to have beautiful flowers but that is not always the case. Once plants have been well established, you don’t have to devote all your time taking care of them especially if nature lends a helping hand. Of course, they all appreciate a little tender loving care for time to time but you don’t have to spend hours on them to have some wonderful blossoms around your home.
During our next trip back to New Hampshire, I’ll take you out to the orchard to see how the apples and pears are coming along. It doesn’t seem so long ago that the orchard was in full bloom. If you missed that post, you can see the trees in bloom here.

Very gorgeous lilies. I had to get rid of mine as the deer refuse to leave them alone no matter what I did to protect them. Beautiful climbing rose, is it climbing on an arched trellis that you can walk under?
Hi Norma, It was nice to be home for a few days while the lilies were blooming their little hearts out. We have so many deer in our apple orchard but they have never bothered the lilies. It appears they would rather munch on the apples. 🙂 The roses grow up the side of my garden shed and along one side of the picket fence around my garden.
Hello – I have heard of folks stringing bars of Ivory soap around the garden to keep the deer at bay – let me know if it works??

How delightful. I so very enjoyed this, as we are in the fifth year of a drought here and the last couple of weeks the temperatures have been 104 – 107. Our garden has been left to die and the landscape looks horrible. Local lakes have gone dry and it is just sad, sad, sad. In face we have been discussing taking a trip to New Hampshire and Vermont to look for a home. Thanks for making the day brighter………you always do!

What a wonderful way to be welcomed home. Your roses remind me of the ones my grandmother used to have in her garden when I was a child. I spent half of the time that I was with her with my nose in one of her big pink roses.

Hi Monique, I do enjoy my gardens and I know you do as well. We do have our spring and fall chores in the garden but the rewards during summer make it all worthwhile. 🙂 After checking the trees in the orchard, I think there is going to be a large crop of apples this year. I never know about the pears as porcupines love them as much as I do.
Love all the color! The roses remind me of my mom’s garden.She’s always had at least a dozen rose bushes in the various places we’ve lived. Absolutely gorgeous when they’re in bloom 🙂

My daylilies have mostly faded by now but I love seeing them still continue especially if given a bit of rain here or there and cooler temps…
Hi Donna, I was pleasantly surprised when I returned home and saw all the day lilies in bloom. I believe that because we had all the rain in June that they bloomed later and longer this year. My lilies in Maine still have blossoms as well. They are making up for my hydrangeas that have only had a few blossoms.
This is gorgeous. You have so many different varietals it must be breathtaking to stand back and admire. I think I would be running out with a camera! And to think of the yellow one over six inches wide…stunning. Love this.

I have a single lily planting in the front but this year I got an abundance of leaves and only a few flower stalks. In comparison to the variety you have, it seems to sad. The roses are lovely … the large blossoms seem very Victorian … velvety and lush.
Hi Boleyn, I believe this was the best year I have ever seen as far as the number of blooms on my lilies. We had so much rain in May and June and the plants really thrived. Hopefully all the leaves on your lilies will lead to a good blooming season next year. I agree with you about the roses…they do have a wonderful Victorian feel about them.

I’m also a daylily aficionado myself.After moving to the nursing home, a master gardener friend expanded an old weedy iris bed and planted a bed of 50 smaller varieties like my favorite ;Pandora’s Box’ which were donated by a company I featured in one of my columns. Then he created a bed with about forty of his favorites that he had hybridized and it’s a blast to see varieties he and I are the only ones to see. He then expanded the bed to plant another 20 varieties. He planted a 100 of a mix of jonquils between them that my Mum bought. He and his wife occasionally stop by to weed.
I was horrified to learn a massive new construction area will eradicate that space but the director is having the landscape company create a a more prominently placed bed where I can incorporate at least 40 of Jock’s hybrids,
I know I’m so very blessed to have Jock and his wife Sandy in my life. I know he has given me so much joy and no doubt countless residents and visitors.

Karen, you live in a paradise of wonderful flowers, water … vegetables – your photos are just amazing … the beauty around you is so intense. So delightful. Have it been raining before you took the photos of those magnificent lilies – or have you just watered them .. there is water drops on some of them that makes the photos even more intense. I more of a lily person than a rose person … but I love taking photos of roses, because every rose has different shades on the same branch.

Your beautiful flowers remind me of my Nana’s yard. She had a green thumb and loved lilies – her favorite were Tiger Lilies that grew at the end of the porch. I could smell the roses while looking at the pictures of the fabulous full blooms!

Now that’s a beautiful welcoming the lilies staged for you, Karen. You’ve really selected some beautiful varieties to brighten your garden. Do your climbing roses bloom all season or only part of it. When well-established, they can look stunning when in full bloom. I love how a slight breeze can cause the petals to fall like snowflakes.
Hi John, That was exactly how I felt. 🙂 Most summers I miss the blooms while we are at the lake. I’m glad you enjoyed seeing the different varieties that I have. My New Dawn roses bloom from early summer and into the fall on the old canes. I know what you mean about the petals falling like snowflakes in the wind.
Aren’t day lilies grand? Though I always curse the person who started the myth that a bank of them will shade out all the weeds. They were lying. 🙂

I love daylilies, I have always grown them in my garden, but since moving to the north of England I struggle to grow them as we have so much rain that the daylily does not seem to cope well. I will not give up, I will try one of your varieties because they are so beautiful. I especially love the yellow and mauve lily.

Hi Hannah, I believe that you really don’t need a green thumb to have wonderful blooms from day lilies. You should try growing one plant next spring…planting it where it will get full sun. I think you will be pleasantly surprised. It may not bloom the first year from the shock of being transplanted but it will grow strong and then will bloom successfully after that.

Hi Ann, I was amazed the first time I traveled to New England and saw lilies growing wild alongside the roads. Some people refer to the orange tiger lilies as ditch lilies and think they are too common but I love them. Their lovely blooms add a sunny spot to life. 🙂

We have day lilies in our garden too and I never have to do anything to them. But your array of colours is stunning. New Dawn was the very first rose that I ever bought for my very first garden many moons ago. I still love it.
Hi Suzanne, It sounds like we have similar tastes in flowers. Don’t you just love that lilies basically take care of themselves. I bought all of my lilies years ago from a women who raised lilies exclusively and I do love the color combinations that I got from her.

I love day lilies, Karen. I have a few yellow and orange in my garden, but I love these other colors! And the size of your flowers seems really impressive to me, too. You must just drink up all these colors and hold onto them all winter. Our day lilies go completely dormant, too. Our warmer winter weather doesn’t affect their natural growth patterns, and I get excited when they begin to reappear also. The rose is a gorgeous bloom also! 🙂

BEAUTIFUL! I find lilies of all varieties hardy and easy to keep – and they are always “volunteering” themselves to make more!! We actually plant all of our white easter lilies in the ground as soon as we can dig and they surprise us every year by reverting back to their natural color. (apparently they are hybridized to be white – or so I have heard – either that or our soil is weird!)
