Idyllic Summer At The Lake

An Idyllic Summer At The Lake is all about enjoying nature’s beauty. There is a rocky shoreline, lined with tall majestic pines, and mountains in the far distance. You can hear the muffled sounds of gentle waves on the sandy beach mixed with the haunting call of loons. It may sound like the opening scene of a movie but that is how I would describe time spent at Long Lake in Naples, Maine during the summer.

Now add the shrieks and laughter of kids as they are bounced over the waves while sitting on tubes towed behind boats. There are the sounds of jet skis as they zoom by, the roar of a seaplane as it takes off and the occasional clang of a bell as the large stern-wheel paddle boat passes by our dock. There is also the boom of fireworks as they explode and the accompanying oohs and aahs as their colors fill the nighttime sky. Add the sound of giggling children standing around a crackling fire as they roast marshmallows and make s’mores and you will know what summer at a Maine lake can be like…lots of fun.

The lake is where our life slows down and most days are spent outdoors. You can usually find me sitting in a weathered Adirondack chair on our shady back deck. I have the computer on my lap working on the blog or planning a trip, with my husband next to me reading a book. Sometimes I’m distracted by the chipmunks scampering about or coming up for a few sunflower seeds. Other times, you will find me taking care of our gardens.

Long Lake has many large homes hidden down private dirt roads as well as lots of small cabins and cottages like ours. There is also a famous summer camp just across the lake from us. Camp Takajo is a camp for boys that runs for seven fun weeks each summer.

Guests and family can pretend they are at camp when they come to stay with us.  Our little cottage sometimes feel crowded when we have visitors but we all have a good time. No one seems to mind the lack of air-conditioning in the guest bedroom, sharing the one small bathroom or kids sleeping on the floor, if necessary, on an air mattress.

They enjoy laid back days sitting on the beach in the shade or swimming in the clear, cool water. If they want more action filled days, they can have a fast ride on the jet ski or we can take them for a cruise around the lake on the pontoon boat. Once back, cocktails are usually had out on the dock where we can enjoy a beautiful sunset before dinner.

Most of our meals are eaten at the cottage,  usually prepared on the grill in nice weather. Of course you know that lobsters will be eaten more than once while in Maine, whether at the cottage or a nearby restaurant. Sometimes we will drive thirty minutes down to Portland for a nice lunch or dinner. Did you know Portland was called “the foodiest small town in the America” by Bon Appetit.

There are just a couple of weeks left before summer ends and I’m going to enjoy every last minute. I love my time spent each year in Maine and always feel a little sad for my idyllic summer at the lake to come to an end. But the weather is starting to turn cool and the apple trees in our orchard in New Hampshire are almost ready to be picked. I’ll eat a few more ripe tomatoes from our garden, help put away the outdoor furniture, empty the cottage of all food, cover the furniture, and look back at our little cottage one last time, knowing I will return, God willing, early next summer for another fun summer.

    1. Thank you Rosemary, I’m glad you enjoyed the photos. Portland does have some very good restaurants that we enjoy a couple of times over the summer.

  1. Hi Karen, I don’t think I realized that you were on Long Lake. We spent last weekend in that area looking for a potential retirement spot! Your lake is beautiful and we did see the jet skiis, the sea plane and the paddlewheeler. It seems ideal with the small restaurants, mini golf, and Portland’s cultural activities so near. You are indeed lucky to have your spot there. And you are right–when everyone is having fun together the size of the cottage doesn’t matter. Linda

    1. Hi Linda, It really is a small world, isn’t it. We absolutely love being on Long Lake. Naples seemed to have everything we were looking for in a small town on a lake. We especially like that Portland is only a thirty mile drive away. It would be nice to have a blogging neighbor on the lake somewhere. 🙂

  2. Idyllic is the perfect word for your summer place on the lake Karen. Great shot of the chipmunks. They gobble up food like a mini vacuum cleaner. You would never get bored with all of the activities on the lake – the seaplane landing, the paddle wheeler, the fireworks, the kids jumping in the lake, wow, you have it all at your “adult summer camp.”

Summer is my favorite time of the year. With a tear in my eye, I would have a very hard time saying good-bye when it’s time to close up for the season. I started to say have a nice weekend, but every day looks like a nice weekend there.

    1. Hi Sam, Idyllic…”extremely happy, peaceful or picturesque” in the dictionary, seemed to be the perfect description of our summers in Maine. I’m glad that you enjoyed the post and appreciate you lovely compliment. I hope you are having a nice weekend as well. 🙂

  3. Gorgeous lake photos. The first one is my favorite. How did you get the chipmunk eating the sunflower seeds to pose for you?
Lovely lakeside cottage, so peaceful and private.
I hope we have more than a couple of weeks of summer left and I hope the weather warms up so you can enjoy more vine ripen tomatoes from your garden.

    1. Hi Norma, I’m glad that you enjoyed the photos. I took over 400 photos of the lake when we were out on the boat. Out of all of them, I thought the first photo would be what most people envision a lake in Maine would look like. That sweet chipmunk loves sunflower seeds, is very brave and doesn’t mind being photographed by my husband while I’m feeding him. I picked enough tomatoes yesterday to make the first and probably last pot of sauce to freeze. It was the worst year for tomatoes because of all the rain. Half the state has frost warning for tonight but I think with the warmth from the lake our garden should be OK. Thank you for your lovely compliment and wish.

    1. Thank you for your lovely compliment, Roger. I’m glad that you enjoyed the post. Our small cottage on the lake provides us with wonderful moments during each summer. 🙂

  4. Life can be grand, can’t it Karen? Lovely photos of your truly idyllic summer surroundings…almost makes me feel like I am there. We must enjoy the wonderful things while we can and what great memories you have all winter long.

    1. Hi Teresa, I have to agree with you about making the most of our summers…especially knowing that there will be feet of snow on the ground all too soon. I’m glad that you enjoyed the photos…thank you for your nice compliment.

    1. Thank you Phil, for your nice compliment. I’m glad that you enjoyed the photos. Lobster is always delicious…that was prepared fra diavolo.

    1. I’m glad you enjoyed the virtual visit to the lake, TW. Thank you for your nice compliment. We do have magnificent sunsets here at the lake…especially with all the reflections on the water. I do agree with you that you must visit Maine again. 🙂

  5. One of the challenges for us in the north is spotting the end of summer each year. We know what is coming. 🙂 The one thing that keeps me going from under the snowdrifts is knowing that I’ll soon be watching plants bud while I sit on the terrace feeling a warm sun on my face.

    1. Hi Jerry, I have to agree with you. After enduring the bitter cold and snow of winter, all of us enjoy the new signs of growth on the plants in spring and make the most of the warmth of summer. Fall is beautiful but we do know what that comes next. 🙂

  6. What a wonderful place to spend your summers. I certainly wouldn’t mind the lack of a/c or sleeping on an air mattress either. Throw another lobster on the fire. I’ll be right over!

    1. Hi Jamie, I’m happy that you stopped by for a visit and that you enjoyed the photos. Summers spent on Long Lake are a lot of fun. Thank you for your nice compliment.

  7. I’d love to come “upta camp” to see you. 🙂 I’d be happy to sit in the dooryard and wait for you to come out. LOL I have woken up in bed under an uninsulated roof and listened to the waves lapping the shore and the loons calling. Some might call it creepy but it instantly got me up and ready for a day on the water.

    1. Hi Maureen, It would be a pleasant surprise to find you sitting in the dooryard. 🙂 I happen to be like you and enjoy being wakened to the call of loons in the morning…it is a lovely way to start the day.

  8. Karen, how very wonderful! You started my day off with delight. Have you ever eaten at the Stone Dog Café in Portland? It is one of our favorite restaurants. The Lobster Eggs Benedict in over the top wonderful. We had the pleasure of spending a Summer on Highland Lake in Portland a couple of years ago and we used to explore Maine every year when we were younger. Delightful……Beautiful…….Peaceful and so very Enjoyable. Thank you for sharing and keep enjoying…….even though I might be turning as green as the Wicked Witch due to envy!!

    1. Thank you Tin Man, for your lovely compliment…I’m glad that you enjoyed the post. You have mentioned the cafe before but I couldn’t find anything about it in Portland until you mentioned Highland Lake. That is just north of Portland and is between the towns of Windham and Falmouth. There is a Stone Dog Cafe on 302 in Windham, I’ll have to try it. As green as the Wicked Witch…that is hard to imagine. 🙂

  9. I like your home best there:)
    Truly.

What a pretty place karen..Love it.
I had lunch once in Portland.. Years ago..it’s a cute town too.
There was a bakery Bon Ap. had recommended and we went there..it was closed..I think we were there on Sunday..

    1. Thank you Monique, for your nice compliment. Our cottage is very different from our home in New Hampshire. It is tiny, only 800 sq. ft., but we love the beautiful location directly on the lake. It is not winterized so we will be draining the water pipes and closing it for the season very soon. I mentioned Standard Bakery in one of my posts last year, it is excellent. The breads and pastries they make are outstanding. I’m sorry it was closed during your visit.

  10. I am so envious. I’d love to be able to afford a cottage at the lake. But, I can’t, so I’ll have to enjoy yours through your pictures.

    1. Hi Joan, I’m always happy to share my photos with my blogging friends that can’t get a chance to experience Maine in person. I’m glad that you enjoyed the post…thank you!

    1. Thank you Kat, for your nice compliment…we love the cottage. I was pleasantly surprised that I was able to capture the fireworks from across the lake. I was experimenting with my camera and didn’t think that the photos would turn out. Oh yes, strawberry martinis on the dock are quite pleasant. I infused strawberries in vodka for a week for them.

    1. Hi B, I’m happy that you enjoyed the post. We think we were very lucky to find a beautiful little spot to spend summers. You should have seen some the the places that we rejected…truly horrible. 🙂

  11. Sounds like you’ve spent another fine summer in Maine Karen and being from the hot, humid South, I know i’d enjoy being there. It’s in the low 70’s here in the Teton’s and high 80’s back home so I’m enjoying those cooler temps.

    1. Hi Larry, It was a nice summer…a little too much rain for our gardens but otherwise lovely. Enjoy your travels out west, I’m enjoying following along on your journey in your motorhome.

    1. Hi Mad Dog, I do have to agree with you, it is lovely at the lake…thank you. The chipmunks and squirrels don’t have to worry about cats in our area but foxes are a different another story.

  12. What a lovely, lovely place, Karen. Idyllic indeed. And thanks for sharing. We’ve not had a good summer as you know, but just looking at your photos gave me a little armchair vacation just now. Thank you!

    1. Hi Betsy, I’m happy that the post was like a little armchair vacation for you. That is nice to know…thank you. You certainly didn’t have a good summer but pretty soon your home will be repaired and you can start enjoying a normal life again.

    1. Hi Tanya, I’m glad you enjoyed the post…summer at the lake is lovely. I’m sure you feel the same way about your little seaside home that you two have worked so hard on. If you and Big Man were to visit, you would be happy to know that there is no need for a bucket…we do have a shower. 🙂

  13. Oh Karen, I love your posts of Maine! How blessed you are! It is so wonderful to read and see how lovely your time in Maine is. I didn’t know that chipmunks would eat from your hand! How neat. Happy end of summer to you! Dana

    1. Hi Dana, I’m always happy to hear that you enjoy the posts I do about our summers in Maine. My husband and I truly are blessed and very thankful. Each summer we set out sunflower seeds on the deck and slowly move them closer and closer to us. Only two have eaten out of our hand and let us pat them. Others will come close but aren’t so brave. Thank you for your nice compliment and wish Dana…same to you!

    1. Hi Plumdirt, Thank you for your nice compliment. We had to do a lot of work both inside and out after we bought our cottage but it was so worth it. 🙂

  14. Maine really is beautiful in the summer. Love your photos and am glad you enjoyed your summer. As for it already being the time to pick apples, we’re still harvesting chiles! I will start my winter garden next week before I leave to Portland to see Daniel.

    1. Hi Richard, I’m glad that you enjoyed the photos. You are harvesting chilies and I’m cutting basil as it is supposed be get to 38 before the sun comes up tomorrow morning so we may have frost. I hope Daniel’s surgery goes well and I know he will appreciate you being there. Remember to pack a jacket. 🙂

    1. Thank you Tessa, for your nice compliment. I’m happy to know that you enjoyed the photos. We did have a nice summer at the lake even though we had lots of rain this year. 🙂

    1. Hi Rachel, I’m happy that you enjoyed the photos…thank you. I’m sorry about the lakes in Texas being almost dry. Our lake has been high all summer. We started out with all the melting of the record snowfalls and then had heavy rains throughout the summer. Wish I could have sent some your way.

  15. Sounds like a lovely vacation. I love the way lakes are so peaceful yet never look the same. There’s always different colors, reflections, winds, etc. We have spent a good amount of time this summer on a lovely lake in NC and I totally appreciate all you’ve described! Enjoy your last days in paradise. 🙂

    1. Thank you for your nice compliment and wish, Chris. I’m happy to know that you had a nice summer lakeside in North Carolina. You are right…lakes do have have a different feel depending on where they are in the world.

  16. Your small cottage tucked back in the trees reminds me of my parent’s cottage (which they sold to my brother and now it’s been sold out of the family…) How idyllic indeed. Love the firework picture best!

    1. Hi Kathy, I’m happy to know that my post reminded you of your parent’s cottage. I’m sure your family had wonderful times there. I’m glad you like the fireworks photo…thank you! I had no idea if the photos I was taking that night would come out at all as I was using a different setting on my camera that I had never used before. 🙂

  17. I so love your pictures, and life at the lake sounds wonderful! We absolutely have to vacation in Maine one of these years. When we were younger we thought it’d be an ideal place to retire to, although now I’m not sure I could handle the cold winters. We’ve finally outwitted the squirrels, so we’re getting some ripe tomatoes! Life is good. 😉 Fun post – thanks.

    1. I appreciate your lovely compliment John, thank you! I really do hope that you get a chance to visit Maine sometime. You know that every summer I will be tempting you with photos about Maine. The cold weather isn’t so bad as you can dress for it…it is the snow that can get tired of. I laughed about the squirrels, I’m glad to know that you are outwitting them. We started feeding the chipmunks on our deck so they wouldn’t climb into the cherry tomatoes plants. 🙂

  18. Karen, I know exactly how you feel! Our little cottage is the same 2 bedroom & one small bath! People sleeping all over the place on the big weekends & nobody minds! I love that! Thanks for sharing your glorious spot with us!

    1. Hi Mary, I’m glad that you enjoyed the post. Yes, it doesn’t seem to matter when friends and family get to have fun together…I’m glad that it is the same with you too.

    1. Thank you Pamela, for your nice compliment. It is nice to know that you enjoyed the photos. We do get to enjoy all the pleasures of nature here at the lake…from its natural beauty to the creatures that live here.

  19. Karen…I so enjoyed this post! This is what lake life is all about, you described it perfectly! We have a lakehouse (year round) in Southwest Michigan and like you, we enjoy our time on and off the water, putting as many guests up as possible, and just simply sitting on the dock enjoying the sunsets. I really wish we had access to that lobster though!! Beautiful pictures!!

    XO,
    Jane

    1. Thank you for your lovely compliment, Jane. I’m happy that you enjoyed the post and photos…we do have a lot in common. I’m glad that you agree about the enjoyment of spending time at a lake. Yes, fresh lobsters are one of the delicious pleasures that we enjoy here in New England.

  20. Maine looks so gorgeous! I love that you can feed the chipmunks. So cute!!! I can’t believe they came up that close to you! Gorgeous pictures!!

    1. Hi Crystal, I’m happy that you enjoyed the photos. Maine really is beautiful. I hope you get a chance to visit some summer, I know you would enjoy your trip. Chipmunks get very brave when there are sunflower seeds involved. 🙂 Thank you for your nice compliment.

    1. Hi Angie, I’m glad that you enjoyed the photos. Long Lake really is a lovely place to spend a few days or an entire summer. Thank you for your nice compliment.

    1. Hi Linda, I have to agree that we are very lucky. This summer seemed to be shorter than usual because of all the rain and cool weather in the beginning. Now we are getting lots of cool weather at the end…our low is going to be 38 tonight.

  21. I’m amazed at the photography we get to savour, for free, in your blog, rather than having to purchase a pricey photography/travel magazine. Whether it’s food, animals, landscapes, architecture, or people (not in this post but in previous ones) all I can say is … superlative.

I love the greedy chipmunk stuffing his cheeks with sunflower seeds. And the large lakeside home with terraces leading from the water and the runabout (?) just waiting to be taken out for a cruise… if I had won that $55 million dollar draw a while back, I might have been able to afford the first story in any case.

    1. Thank you so much Boleyn, for your very kind words. That is probably one of the nicest compliments I have had since I started blogging. I’ve always appreciated your loyal following. I loved that my husband was able to capture the photo of the chipmunk with his cheeks so full while he was sitting in my hand. 🙂 Don’t you just love that gorgeous home, the lawns are always immaculate. No matter the size of the home or boat, there is one thing we all have in common here at the lake…lots fun and that is what summer is all about.

  22. dear sorry for the long absence, I have so little time to visit my pals blogs lately, but your blog is always worth visiting… such a beautiful summer you seem to have spent, I am so happy for you, after the long winter. also here in Sweden the summer was beautiful and long and it made us forget those long months of white and grey. was that a wild squirrel? have to try to bring food for them next time I go to the woods!

    1. Hi Barbara, Thank you so much for your kind words. Please don’t worry…I always enjoy when you have a chance to stop by as I know how busy life can be. 🙂 I agree with you, all of the people who have to deal with the cold grey and snowy days of winter long for a wonderful summer filled with warm pleasurable days. The cute little critter in the photo is a chipmunk. They are about half the size of a red squirrel and much smaller than grey squirrels.

  23. Karen, such a beeeeeeeeautiful part of the world. If I could do so in short travelling time I would love to come visit. Thanks for sharing this… I have a question, what is the difference between a chipmunk and a squirrel?

    1. Hi Lizzy, I have to agree with you, Maine…actually most of New England is a beautiful part of the world. If there weren’t so many miles between us, I would be traveling to your part of the world as well. Chipmunks and squirrels are from the same family of mammals but the chipmunk has stripes and is very small as you can see from its size in my hand. We have red squirrels that are about twice their size and grey squirrels that are much larger than both.

    1. Thank you Charlie, for your nice compliment. I’m glad that you enjoyed the photos. I do try to seek out the small treasures in life and I do think they are abundant here at the lake. 🙂

    1. Hi Ashley, Portland is the largest city in Maine but has less than 70,000 population. I think you would really enjoy a visit. It is a very walkable city, full of great restaurants and wonderful nearby places to visit. I’m glad you enjoyed the photos from the lake, it is only 30 miles away from Portland.

    1. Hi Celia, I’m happy that you enjoyed the post and photos. There are always some bumps in the road but I always like to look for the little pleasures in life. Thank you for your nice compliment.

    1. Thank you Uru, for your nice compliment. I do have to agree with you…the lake is a lovely spot that we enjoy very much. I’m glad that you enjoyed the photos.

    1. Hi Lisa, The lake really is a pretty spot to spend summer. Don’t you just love the little chipmunk. We have enjoyed him hanging around as he was very entertaining.

  24. The lake…what a great way to get away, enjoy family, laid back days….Love it. I live in the southeast so summer lasts a long time. I am really looking forward to cooler days.

    1. Hi Velva, We used to live in Florida so I certainly know about the long hot summers. Our cold snowy winters here in New England really make us appreciate our summer even though it passes so quickly. We think the lake is a pleasant place to entertain our friends and family. I’m glad you enjoyed the post.

  25. Idyllic is the perfect way to describe your wonderful Maine home and location, Karen. Those are fantastic photos and I can easily see why you’d not only settle into a relaxing and almost charmed life for the summer, and then find it very hard to say goodbye until next summer! What happy memories you’re creating not just for you the two of you, but for anyone who comes to visit. I just love the photo of the fireworks over the lake. Stunning! Enjoy the time you have left…I know you will! ox

    1. I’m happy to know that you enjoyed the post and photos, Debra. You are right…everyone that comes to visit seems to enjoy themselves. Our time at the cottage is nearing an end for this year but we will enjoy every last minute. Thank you for your wish and nice compliment.

  26. Idyllic indeed! You seem to have the perfect summer spot. Your photos are all gorgeous…I almost feel like I was there too.

    1. Hi Michelle, It really has been a nice summer. It would have been a little better if we hadn’t had so much rain but you can’t have everything. 🙂

  27. It certainly looks like the most perfect of holidays. I love all the images, especially the sunset shot and the view of your cottage with the jetty in front of it. I can imagine children can just roam free in this type of a setting and have themselves some good old fashioned harmless fun. Thanks for sharing your patch of paradise xx

    1. Hi Charlie, Spending summers at the lake really is a nice holiday. You are so right about it being a perfect play for children to have good old fashion fun. I’m glad you enjoyed the post and photos. Thank you for your nice compliment.

  28. What a delightful post. Even thought it’s tinged with a certain melancholy as summer ends. Or is that just me feeling melancholic as it’s already cold here at night. No more flip-flop weather for a while. Still, I do happen to like Autumn. It’s the depth of winter that really gets to me.

    1. Hi Johnny, I’m glad that you enjoyed the post, thank you! It is cold here at the lake as well. It was 34F this morning. I agree that it is a little sad when summer comes to an end but fall is lovely. 🙂

  29. Loved this post and the fabulous photos!! It made me miss all the fun we used to have when LOTS of members of the extended family used to head up to our farm in St. Antoine de Tilly (Quebec) not far from Quebec City. There’s just something special about being able to “kick;back” away from all our usual cares and worries. The food tastes better and every moment just seems so special. And – I 100% agree with you about Portland – last summer I visited a niece who lives there & was sooo impressed with the “restaurant scene” !!

    1. Thank you Cecile, I’m happy that you enjoyed the post and that it reminded you of your farm. I’m glad that you agree about Portland, I think it has some terrific restaurants.

  30. You have an absolutely beautiful camp on the lake, and I very much enjoyed your pictures! We have a summer RV camp on a coastal river here in Oregon four hours away from where we live. I understand your nostalgia about packing up the last time before you leave for the year. We do that in mid-October, just before the winter rains. It floods our camp every year so the RV and everything has to be moved up to higher ground. We endure the cooler weather and rain in hopes of catching a salmon in the fall run, and the Dungeness crab are excellent this time of year.

    1. Hi Kathryn, Thank you for your nice compliment. I’m happy that you enjoyed the photos. Your reference to a “camp” is what most people in New England refer to a place like ours. 🙂 Your spot on the river sounds wonderful especially catching salmon and the Dungeness crab must be wonderful.

    1. Thank you Tandy, for your nice compliment. I was very happy that the photos I took of the fireworks turned out as they were all the way on the other side of the lake. Than you for your wish…we will enjoy our last moments here. 🙂

  31. You have made me so wish to see that part of the US. In our future is a prolonged trip around the US and I am storing away little gems of information about where to visit. This looks idyllic.

    1. Hi Suzanne, If you do indeed take an extended trip to the US, I think you would definitely enjoy spending some of your time in New England. My husband and I think it is wonderful. I’m glad that you enjoyed the post…thank you!

  32. Karen, your beautiful photos always make me feel good – they are just wonderful, perfect for a little morning daydream while enjoying my espresso and enjoying a bit of quiet time at the house! It looks and sounds like ýou spent a wonderful summer at the lake! Thank you for sharing all the fabulous pictures!
All the best from very rainy and rather cool Bonn, dear Karen!

    1. Thank you for your lovely compliment, Andrea. I’m happy that you enjoyed the photos of our summer at the lake…it has been fun. I have been watching the weather in Germany, very much like what we are having. It was 34F early this morning and in the middle 60’s this afternoon. It feels more like October instead of September.

    1. Thank you Natalie for your kind words, I’m happy that you enjoyed the post. Our cottage in on Long Lake, about 30 miles north of Portland, Maine.

  33. Oooh,…Aaah, you spend your Holidays wisely & enjoy yourself thoroughly too,… just the way, you supposed to do it! 😉 Thanks for the fabulous cool pics & great Summer dishes you make yoo! Your cabin looks like a very cool place to be,..:) xxx Enjoy, my dear! xxx

    1. I’m happy that you enjoyed the post, Sophie. Thank you for your lovely compliment. We do have a great time at the cottage each summer. 🙂

    1. Thank you Jennifer for your nice compliment. I’m always happy when another New Englander enjoys a post about where we both live. My husband and I do enjoy our time spent at the cottage. 🙂

  34. I thought you had been on break because I hadn’t received any posts in months. I Googled you and see that you have been posting. I can’t think why I stopped getting your posts in my inbox, but I signed up again to receive them. I’ve missed you and happy to know you are here and all is well!

    1. Hi Victoria, I’m so happy to know that you went to so much trouble to see if I was still blogging. There must have been a glitch. I have been having trouble with your blog as well as my comments didn’t seem to be going through. Hopefully the kinks have been worked out. It is very nice to hear from you…I’ve missed your visits. 🙂

  35. Maine is an idyllic place. You’ve captured exactly how I feel about it. We’ve only been twice, but each time was exactly as you described. And each time we drove away hoping that we’ll get back someday. 🙂 I’m glad you had such a wonderful summer. Enjoy your last few days at the cottage.

    1. Hi Kristy, I always think of you when I do a post about Maine, as I know how you loved your visits to this lovely state. I’m glad that I captured all that you love about it. Thank you for your nice compliment and wish. 🙂

    1. Hi David, You got the saying just right and I do have to agree with it wholeheartedly. Thank you for your lovely compliment. I really appreciate it coming from such a good photographer as yourself. 🙂

  36. What a beautiful nature and beautiful sceneries from where I am seeing it. I am sure it’s a lot more breathtaking from your vantage point. Beautiful place you have there, Karen.

    1. Hi Ray, I do have to agree with you about the pretty scenery at the lake, we really do enjoy it. I know that my camera doesn’t do it justice compared to when it is seen in purpose. I’m glad that you enjoyed the photos…thank you!

  37. What a beautiful place to spend the summer, that sunset is just gorgeous! Hope you enjoy the last of the summer, it must be really hard to leave the lake and your lovely cottage.

    1. Thank you Sarah, for your nice compliment. I’m happy to know that you enjoyed the photos. We do get wonderful sunsets here and I love the way they are reflected on the water. It is always a little hard to leave the lake at the end of summer but we have memories of all the good times we enjoy each summer.

  38. What a wonderful, wonderful time! I love these photos so much. They take me back to summer camping trips in Canada. 🙂 And I love that fireworks shot over the water. Gorgeous!!

    1. Hi Krista, I’m happy that you enjoyed the post and photos and that it brought back nice memories of your camping experiences in Canada. I was pleased that the firework photo turned out so well as it from across the other side of the lake.

  39. Loved looking at all your photos, It certainly looks like a wonderful place to spend the summer. Like you I never want the summer to end. Thank you for your kind comments on my last post. I don’t know how you find the time to reply to ALL your followers. Loved the chipmonks, how wonderful to have them feed from your hand.

    1. Hi Barbara, It is nice to know that you enjoyed the post and photos. Thank you! It does take time to comment or answer my readers comments but I think that is the one of the nicest things about blogging…it’s how friendships are developed. Thank you for your kind words.

    1. Hi Carolyn, I changed the title of this post several times but idyllic just seemed the perfect description of our summer. I’m glad you enjoyed the post.

    1. Hi Didi, I’m glad that you enjoyed the post and photos. My husband and I do think we have a wonderful little spot on a beautiful lake. Thank you for your compliment and wish.

  40. Love the little chipmunk w/the chubby cheeks – got to grab a little extra for the winter I guess. It must be sad to leave such a beautiful and tranquil place. It seems like we’re losing so much daylight each night & I’m hoping the Farmer’s Almanac is wrong with their prediction that we’re in for a hellava winter. Looks like we’re going to finally break down & get a generator though.

    1. Hi Diane, Don’t you love that little chipmunk. 🙂 We started feeding them so they would stop eating our cherry tomatoes. It worked and they have certainly provided us with so much entertainment. I totally agree…let’s hope the almanac is wrong. We have a whole house generator at our house in New Hampshire and it has been worth its weight in gold. Five seconds after the power goes out, it starts automatically.

      1. That’s the ideal setup w/the generator. Do you have natural gas or did you have to put a propane tank in? We don’t have a gas option & I’m always worried about stored propane. Since we’ve got just about every type of workman coming out for the kitchen, we’re going to have the electrician out this week to see about a connection for a generator.

      2. We have a 500 gallon propane tank that is buried in the ground. We have an automatic switch that turns the generator on 5 seconds after the power goes out…we don’t have to do a thing. Several years back when we had the bad ice storm, the power in our area was out for 8 days but with the whole house generator, we had no problem.

      3. Ah, thanks for the info. I didn’t think of putting the tank underground. Boy do I remember that storm! As it turned out after everyone got their power back….except for the 9 of us on the street, we never really lost the power. National Grid had gone down all of the atreets flipping the breaker switches just in case and no one remembered to come back to switch us on again.

    1. Hi Kenley, I’m happy to know that you enjoyed the post and photos. I do hope you have the opportunity to visit Maine sometime in the future. It is a lovely state and I believe that you would enjoy your visit. Thank you for your nice compliment.

  41. I cannot believe how beautiful your pictures are – that really does look like a magical summer! You are blessed!

    1. Thank you Afra, for your nice compliment. I’m happy that you enjoyed the photos of our summer spent in Maine. My husband and I are very lucky to be able to enjoy our time spent in Maine.

    1. Hi Jessica, I have to agree with you…Maine is a lovely state to visit. We certainly enjoy our summers spent at the lake. I’m glad that you enjoyed the post. Thank you for your nice comment.

    1. Thank you Mary, for your nice compliment and wish. I’m happy that you enjoyed the post. We are going to make the most of our remaining time spent in Maine.

  42. Looks like the perfect place to spend the summer.
The views are out of this world and your description is delightful to read and transports me ad hoc to this lovely place.

    1. Hi Daniela, My husband and I were thrilled when we found our little cottage at the lake…it is perfect for summer. I’m happy to know that you enjoyed the post. Thank you!

    1. Thank you Madonna, for your nice compliment. I’m glad that you enjoyed the photos. I’m happy to know that you liked the peach streusel pie and I appreciate your sweet comment about the food I prepare looking delicious. 🙂

  43. Mm, that last lake photo there… gorgeous! So jealous of the location of your summer place Karen – I think I’d be tempted to stay there year round. I guess it might get rather chilly in Winter but that’s ok – as my wife says: “there’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing” so I’d hunker down with some blankets and spend most of the day staring out at the lake.

I agree that it indeed must be so tough to return again afterwards, but besides – you don’t appreciate something if you have it all the time. This way you can think about how much fun it will be next summer! 🙂

    1. Hi Charles, I’m glad that you enjoyed the post and photos…thank you. Sunsets from off our dock are wonderful and I love the way they are reflected on the water. I do think we enjoy our few months at the lake because it is not full time. Our little cottage is not built for the many months of below freezing temperatures and there is also the problem of lots of snow that makes getting down the steep road to the cottage almost impossible. Your wife is right about proper clothing for winter weather, it make a difference. 🙂

  44. I had written a nice long comment and then flash, something happened and it disappeared, not sure if it was posted for moderation so if it did, you are welcome to delete this one.
I can see why you spend the summer in Maine, I would too and your place looks like the absolute perfect size; our cottage can be cleaned top to bottom in less than one hour and that’s eat off the floor clean! One of the charity lottos here are offering a 3,000 square food cottage as one of the prizes, now that seems very large to me and I would hate to have to spend the entire weekend cleaning!
We’re heading up north tonight when our BFFs from Illinois arrive by plane, I’m hoping the weather won’t be too cold, but I will be glad to be rid of the high humidity and pressure systems, I’ve had a headache for three days!

    1. Hi Eva, I’m sorry that your first comment got swallowed up in some kind of glitch but this one came through. I’m glad that you enjoyed the post….thank you. Our cottage is tiny, just 800 sq. feet, we call it an easy keeper. 🙂 Have a good time with your friends, I know they will enjoy spending time with you.

    1. Hi Dedy, Our cottage really is in a very lovely spot on the lake but you are right…I don’t think you would want to be here in the winter with feet of snow on the ground. 🙂

  45. Adorable chipmunks.
What a setting. You captured it well. I also admire your ability to move so fluidly between places with your garden and the feeling of home. That’s not easy. As always it’s hard to believe summer is over and we are approaching fall. Another bountiful season. cheers… wendy

    1. Hi Wendy, I’m glad that you enjoyed the post, thank you. Aren’t chipmunks just the cutest little things. Instead of picking tomatoes in the garden at the cottage in Maine, I’ll soon be picking apples and pears in the orchard at our home in New Hampshire. I was just telling my husband, that we literally move twice a year. You are right, it isn’t easy but I love both places because they are both so different. 🙂

  46. Karen! such a truly stunning post! It’s exactly the idyllic summer time vision I have of lake houses and endless days playing, cooking, swimming. Trust me, for someone coming out of the end of winter it all looks more fabulous than you can imagine.

How delightful were those little critters, nature’s always hard at work!

    1. Thank you Alli, for your lovely compliment. I’m happy that you enjoyed the post. I hope that your coming summer will be an enjoyable one. The little chipmunks entertain us all summer…they are so cute. 🙂

  47. Oh my gosh, Karen, it looks and sounds amazing. Your photos are (as always!) beautiful and I love the way you describe your time there. I’m sorry your time at the lake is coming to a close but thank you for sharing your lovely retreat!

    1. Hi Lesley, I’m happy that you enjoyed the post and photos. I appreciate your lovely compliment…thank you. We love are summers in Maine…they go by so quickly.

    1. Hi Paula, My husband and I love our little spot on the lake. Besides Naples, Italy, there are 10 states in the U.S. that have a town called Naples. 🙂

  48. We’ve been to a sort of different first time trip to Maine this summer but would love this idyllic setting on our next venture into New England. Such a peaceful travel post and existence, Very inspiring and I love everything about it.

  49. I’m far behind on my reading and just catching up now but it looks like I saved the best for last…..this is just beautiful and your “little cottage” is amazing! You are a lucky girl!

    1. Hi Kelli, I’m behind reading as well. 🙂 I’m happy to know that you enjoyed the post and appreciate you lovely compliment…thank you so much. I do agree with you, I’m very lucky.

  50. Makes me want to move up to Maine. My husband used to spend his summers at a camp in Maine when he was young…he always jokes that it was him mom’s favorite time of the year! I wonder if that is where he went?? Enjoy the last few days of summer!

    1. Hi Becki, I know what you mean…Maine can steal a little piece of your heart, it is so nice. There are hundreds of camps in Maine but your husband could have very well gone to the camp across the lake from us, it was founded in 1947. We have had a wonderful summer but the weather has turned cold with temps in the 30’s at night so it is time to pack up the cottage for the year.

  51. As you can tell, I’m just now getting caught up on my email. By now, summer is long since past. The aspens have turned around here. Still, your great images are a good remembrance of summer past. Thanks.

    1. Hi Darryl, I can’t tell you how much I appreciate that you took the time to read and comment on past posts. I am falling behind on my reading as well as we had to close down and move everything out of the cottage for the upcoming winter but it is finally done. Now that we are back in New Hampshire, about 50% of the trees have changed their color. I’m sure your aspens are beautiful…I’d love to see them. 🙂
