Fashion Alert! While recently walking down the cobbled streets of the medieval town center of Kitzbühel, Austria, I came across a fashion photo shoot. A small crowd had gathered around the model and she didn’t seem to notice that I took a couple of “spy” photos of what may be this year’s trendy fashion.
In the winter, Kitzbühel attracts skiers from all over the world for the World Cup Alpine Ski Races that are held on the Hahnenkamm mountain. It also attracts the rich and famous who come to enjoy the skiing and its glamourous night life. The historic old town has two pedestrian streets that are lined with bars, restaurants and high-end fashion boutiques. While window shopping, I was amazed to see leggings in the windows of several trendy boutiques with price tags of 300 and 400 Euros each. Therefore, I was not surprised to see a fashion shoot taking place in front of a boutique called Jet Set. The trendy boutique clothing store, originating in Switzerland in the ’60’s, described its clothing line as a way of dressing for comfort, luxury and style.
I know that glossy fashion magazines show models wearing outlandish or unwearable items that most of us would look silly wearing…that is, if we could afford to wear a famous designer’s haute couture clothing. I also know that if I wore the complete outfit that the pretty model was wearing, my husband would just shake his head in disbelief and not in a good way. He and I both know that I could never carry off the look of antique ski goggles atop a felt hat, a fox vest over a one piece hooded jumpsuit with a number on its back worn with hiking boots and a camouflaged blue and gray backpack.
Looking at each piece individually, these expensive items stand on their own very well. The natural and soft colors are very stylish and easily worn by most women. I’m sure that they will probably be the new “must have” pieces of clothing among the “jet set” for this fall and winter. I won’t be surprised if I see a famous actress wearing something similar in an upcoming tabloid magazine.

LOL Karen you’re cute – I love that you surreptiously took photos of a photo shoot!! I like it all (especially the boots!) with the exception of the fur vest. I always think fur looks best on the living breathing animal 😉

I’ve never had any claims to being fashionable but I don’t see myself wearing any items in that ensemble. As to its look on the model, I think she’d look gorgeous in a gunny sack or sloppy pair of sweats … oh wait, that’s what she’s wearing.

Karen this is so funny! I would wear the boots…I have some very similar already. Maybe the hat…just maybe on a rainy day! I cannot even tell you how silly the rest would look on me…but on a young leggy lady absolutely fab! Isn’t life fun?

tend to look a lot like that—but here it’s called “Goodwill” and costs about $10 for the whole outfit

Hmm, I rather like this outfit, although I think my idea of what it should cost and what it actually costs are likely astronomically apart. I could probably get away with wearing it, although I’d eschew the ski goggles. Not so sure about the fox vest (assuming it’s faux?). Oh, wait a minute … I just noticed it’s a one-piece jumpsuit. I can’t imagine how much the entire outfit must cost. Without the antique ski goggles, I’m sure you could get a similar look for a lot less. 🙂

Hi Diane, The fashion industry doesn’t seem it understand what we need in our everyday life, that is for sure.
My good friend and old boss Kim could totally pull off that entire look (she’s 48!!!) but not I! I would definitely wear the vest, bag and boots but probably not all at once. I have similar boots in black suede that I bought in my mid-twenties! I wore them on this trip to Illinois! So comfy. I wear leggings all the time, JT loves them; I just bought a cute pair of jeggings! But mine were only a tenth of the cost of the one’s you mentioned.
I’ve not been to Kitzbühel, but you’ve put it on my list!
We narrowly escaped tornados yesterday in Yorkville, Illinois (they even closed Soldier Field for a few hours). Scary!
Hi Eva, I know that there are some women who could wear this outfit and carry it off perfectly but I’m not one of them either. Each piece on its own is wearable except for the jumpsuit…I’d have to have about eight inches cut off the bottom for it to fit me. 🙂 I agree with you about the leggings, I’ve never seen any that were expensive before.
I’d wear the boots. I think the model looks OK, but even she would look better wearing something else.

Hi Debra, I agree with you. For the same amount of money that outfit must cost, I’m sure she would look better in something else. I think we all like the boots.
I think I might get some funny looks if I went out in that one-piece here! But in front of the fire, or even in bed, it would be really cosy! I’m no fashion queen, so I wouldn’t try and copy the look. It has to be practical for me. The boots look nice and weather proof! A fun post Karen! 😀

I continue to be amazed with how easily led we humans are. No matter how ridiculous something may look, when some fashion designer says it’s the in look, the sheep run out and plunk down their money. As for your question, I might take the model with just the boots 🙂

Hi Barbara, The model is young, tall and thin so she can wear anything. I’m 5 ft tall as well and could never pull off an outfit like this. I can just imagine the looks I would get if I did. I’m loving all the comments…too funny!
How fun to see the shoot going on. I like the look of the furry best, but if it is real, never mind. The jumpsuit looks like long underwear or pajamas. The hat is cute, the pack looks practical. Any of the men in my life would just look at me and shake their heads, wondering when I took leave of my fashion senses.

This is a really fun post, Karen! As two guys, we would simply look at this woman and wonder, “What was she thinking??” or “Did her mother KNOW she was wearing this when she left the house this morning?” However, it wasn’t until you picked it all apart did I also realize that each piece (except maybe the fox vest) does stand well on its own. We caught a few fashion shots in Venice, too – with the same thoughts… “What WAS the designer thinking?”

I’d wear it all except the hat and goggles. And I’d recreate it with affordable items. However, now that I think about it, I’d probably look like Cruella Deville (sp?) in that vest. And by the way, I’ll keep my $30 Eddie Bauer leggings thank you very much. Man that’s a hefty price for leggings.

The onesie I like for pj’s if it didn’t have print on it. The shoes and back-pack I’d give a thumb’s up on but the fur and hat not so much. I love the backdrop of the “jet set” hotel? How fun to chance upon this.
Hi Wendy, I agree with you about the onesie being suitable for lounging or sleeping. Everyone seems to like the boots and backpack is very practical…it is just when you combine everything together. It really was nice to happen upon the photo shoot and I thought it would be fun to share it with everyone. Jet Set was the boutique where the clothes came from.
I’d wear the boots but def not the fur 😦 Maybe the hat too, although I’d get some funny looks in my mountain village I’m sure 🙂

Very interesting combination. My eye caught the fur first. No, I probably wouldn’t buy or wear this outfit because we spend our winter in a warm climate, but it does look great on the model.

Hi Sam, I know what you mean about not being able to were this outfit in a warm climate. Living in Florida for so many years, I used to envy everyone who lived where they could wear a pretty sweater and a pair of wool slacks…my favorite cold weather outfit.
I really love the whole outfit with the exception of the fur. And oh, I wish I were that tall! I would love to have an outfit like this, I think it’s put together well. My hubby would probably like me in this…he likes when I’m fashionable as opposed to wearing yoga pants and a T shirt! lol!

I’m quite short but the rest of me isn’t thin, so if I wore this, the crotch would be around my knees. I probably wouldn’t buy it, but if someone gave it to me, it would be jammies for winter. 🙂
Hi Maureen, One thing I’m finding out through this post is that I have a lot of short friends. 🙂 You are exactly right about how the jumpsuit would fit us. If we could find a proper fitting one, I think it would be great to wear at home.
At the risk of being politically incorrect, I’d grab that vest in a second. Boots are cute too but other than wearing a one piece coverall for painting no way would I wear a jumpsuit. Even with the heat turned up, there is no way you can go to the bathroom up here in the winter without freezing your top off.
Would I spend what that outfit cost? Not even a consideration. My husband likes stylish outfits but I don’t think he’d think much of this one, unless he saw it on the model.
Hi Diane, My thoughts exactly. The first thing I thought about was the predicament of using a public ladies room dressed like this. The hook on the back of the door would have to hold the backpack and vest. Once you have half undressed, you have to deal with the dangling arms and hood of the jumpsuit. Definitely too cold here in New England to wear a one piece jumpsuit if you were going to not be at home. 🙂

Hi Victoria, It was really fun to have stumbled upon the photo shoot and since I don’t travel without my little point and shoot camera in hand, I had to sneak some photos. 🙂 I’m sorry that you aren’t receiving emails when I publish a new post. There is no way I would wear this outfit, but part of fashion is finding a style that is right for you, not blindly following. Having worked in the fashion industry for 20 years this is far from the most outlandish outfit I’ve ever seen. I think the model looks fab. GG

The boots would be great to wear in my garden especially after the rain. Why does she need a hat when there is a hood on her jumpsuit? I would look gorgeous in the jumpsuit if I were a few inches taller and I shaved off a few inches all around from my torso.
Hi Norma, I think we all wish we could be a little taller and a little thinner so that we could look like the model in that outfit…I know I do. The hat is the one piece that has gotten all the comments and you are right, the jumpsuit has a hood.

I think pretty much anyone would want to wear that outfit… I mean, it’s like wearing sweatpants all the time, except it’s a full-body outfit, though I don’t think I know anyone who’d actually want to be seen *out* wearing that thing!

Karen, it’s supposed to be pouring down rain in Sacramento, California tomorrow. Which is good because we need the rain. I’m retired, and can’t say that I’m a clotheshorse. I try to buy clothes with classic lines that will last me forever. But looking at your photos, I would wear those boots laced up. For gardening in the mud or mucking stalls!

How fun to be in on something like this. You never know what you’ll stumble upon. We were in Paris once and saw a crowd gathered around a store waiting for something or someone. We waited with them. Finally this fancy dressed woman with a large, beautiful hat came prancing out. We had no clue who it was until someone clued us in. It was the princess of Prussia. Really???? I guess everyone else was thrilled but we felt a bit foolish, not even knowing (or caring) who this was 🙂 I guess it showed our lack of sophistication ………….

Oh Karen ~ this was fun! I am always thrilled when I come upon such unexpected happenings, but, oh dear, I seem to be on a somewhat different wavelength again 🙂 :
1. YES, I would buy it if I could afford it – except for the fur: a big ‘no’ for me! Probably very big glasses instead of goggles! Always have them on top of the hat or head since my teenage years!!
2. Well, this is practically a uniform for me here from morning > night all winter!!
3. & 4. This has been very much ‘my’ daytime look for eons : have enough pieces to work the changes . . . different hats, different glasses – oh, DO love the boots!! I don’t remember the last time a wore a skirt in daytime!!! And I am not tall – perhaps about 165 cms.
5. Not married at the moment ~ but old enough not to worry an iota if some male companion did not like . . . like me, like what I wear 🙂 !

Hi Charlie, I do enjoy Kitzbühel, especially when we were there during the Christmas season. If you enjoy people watching, this is a perfect town to visit during the ski season when you never know when you will run into someone famous. I know I wouldn’t look good in this outfit but I thought about your nice thin shape and thought perhaps you could wear a version of this outfit. 🙂

The whole look of the photo shoot is really elegant, and I love it. The model is beautiful wearing what I fear would just look like dressy sweats if I were wearing them! At least the components are not like costumes. I love to watch “Project Runway.” The show is a competition between designers, with weekly fashion challenges, but I almost never like the fashion choices. Maybe if I were 6 feet tall and 110 pounds I could imagine looking good in some of the get-ups, but alas, NO! 🙂 This outfit is really quite nice, but just not for me! How fun to come across a photo shoot in such a beautiful environment!
Hi Debra, I think you see what I’ve seen in this…although a comfortable yet elegant look on the model, I’m sure that most of us could not easily pull off this look especially in our own environments. I think if you were a tall, thin person dressed in this outfit and visiting Kitzbühel during the prime season you would fit right in. 🙂

Fun post Karen! Always love seeing current fashion from Europe. For me, I would never wear it altogether. The jumper out of sweat material would just never be my thing. I would go for the hat sans goggles, boots, backpack. The fur looks beautiful, I love the colors and I bet I would like it but I would be too afraid of offending someone to wear it!

I am with your husband on this one: I’ve never seen anything so ridiculous in all my life! I hope that fox handbag (or whatever it is supposed to be) is not from a real fox. I’d definitely outlaw any real fur clothing. My husband would divorce me if I ever wore fur and I wouldn’t blame him.
I like the boots best: they look great for hiking and I sadly had to say goodbye recently to my old and trusted Chris Brashers which I proudly wore for 15 years. It was like saying a final goodbye to a good friend. I wouldn’t buy any of the other items of clothing the model is wearing as I have no use for it.

I gave up on fashion when I realized that most women’s magazines will have articles about looking better in your 30’s, 40’s and 50’s but if you are 60 or older, you are totally ignored. However, I am very comfortable in my own skin and wear appropriate clothes for the occasion. And people wonder why older people dress like “little old ladies.”

Thank you for your wish, Tandy, we arrived home a few days back. I don’t ski either…who knows what the fashion minds were thinking. With the boots she is wearing and the backpack, maybe they put this outfit together thinking it might be appropriate for a walk. 🙂
To answer your questions: Although I am sure I could pull it off I would never wear this outfit (unless I was lounging on the couch) I like to dress up a little and walking around in a track suit just doesnt work for me. I have to admit that I put quite a bit of attention into my clothes and like to dress fashionably. And as this style of boot certainly is hot at the moment I do like the idea of combining them with something other than a practical jean (but I think I would go for loose army-green washed silk pants…and I do think that people wear way to few hats.
Hi Afra, I agree about the jumpsuit…it does look like something more appropriate to wear at home. You are so right about the boots as most everyone says they like them. I enjoy wearing hats, especially in the winter but I do have trouble finding ones that fit properly. It seems so many items are “one size fits all” now. It does sounds like you do dress fashionably. 🙂
Such a fun and funny post Karen…since you asked…No, I would not wear this outfit…no offenses, but it is not me. In spite of that is is a fun experience being around it.

I already wear this outfit….at home! Of course, minutes the goggles, the boots, the fur and the hat. And mine is considerably cheaper! Believe me, if I am wearing this at home, I usually change to go out 🙂 and I think my husband would laugh at me if I wore that exact get up. I’m too old to pull that off 🙂
Hi Nazneen, When the weather is cold, I wear sweats while I’m working in the house. I’m like you though…I don’t wear them out. Your husband, my husband and many of the other men seem to like their wives and girlfriends dressing in a more classic fashion.

How fun that you got to watch a bit of the photo shoot! I’ve gotta ask, what’s up with those glasses on the hat? They look like goggles for flying in an open airplane or an old-timey car. Also, I can tell the young folks from experience, it’s a pain to use the bathroom in a one-piece. What ever are they thinking, bringing back the jumpsuit?

I’d ditch the fur for sure! The next to go would be the hat and the horrible glasses/goggles. As a former fashion businessperson, I find some people’s sense of style almost laughable! Fun post Karen!!!

It’s interesting, she almost has the “construction person” type of look with the hat & boots & one piece but the fur adds a little bit of “wealthy person” type of look. Not my cup of tea. I think my husband will say, that’s not you. My father-in-law will say, quoting Cecil Beaton, “the truly fashionable are beyond fashion.”

I don’t think the outfit is too outrageous, except for the fur, I’m hoping it’s faux:) The hat and goggles.. well, I have a black bowler hat, but would never think to wear it like that! and Nix on the goggles for me! Whenever I see models after the photo shoot they’re almost always wearing very simple and inexpensive clothing.. I don’t think they get paid well? xx
Hi Smidge, I think if you look at each piece of the outfit on their own they aren’t outrageous but most everyone doesn’t care for them together…especially the goggles.

If she weren’t so long and lean, it would look like a little girl in sleepy pajamas run amok in the hall closet….awful! That’s why women need to develop a personal style that is not dependent on fashion. When you try to fit a mold you end up looking ridiculous!

Hahaha…I would stand out like a sore thumb if I wore anything close to the outfit in my small town. I think high fashion is fun to look at and analyze and occasionally I will see an idea, usually related to accessories, that can actually perk up my somewhat conservative wardrobe. The prices always bowl me over.

LOL I’ve stumbled across a few fashion shoots, too. A few of them on the beaches of Hawaii. Not surprisingly, there were many bikini-clad models, which of course my husband appreciated. 😉

Even when I was 21 and in the fashion world as an illustrator, this would not be something I would ever wear – and I did wear some very crazy attire. You are right, each on its own has potential.

Hi Karen, it must have been fun being a fashion voyeur! For me, fashion is what suits me..makes me look good. So no, I wouldn’t wear what the model has on because I don’t think it would particularly flatter me or my vanity 🙂
Hi Rajini, It was a fun experience…especially getting a couple of photos of the shoot myself. I think it is important to know what looks good on you so that when you go somewhere you feel completely confident in yourself.
1. Would you buy this outfit as it is shown in the photo? – No, far too young trendy for me – and I would never wear fur. Plus I think this is not fashion, this is just in my book a joke and it’s not making any woman look attractive.
2. If you would, where would you wear it? – Wouldn’t wear anything expect the boots maybe and they look like they are made for good and comfortable walking with little camera.
3. Would you try to get the same look with items you already own? – don’t own any items like this, don’t even own a backpack.
4. Would you try to recreate a similar look for a reasonable price from your local discount store? – No.
5. What do you think your husband or boyfriend would think of this outfit if you bought and wore it? I think he would just shake his head and leave the room, just like your husband.

Let it just be noted that I could probably never wear any of those clothes and look fashionable! I unfortunately wasn’t blessed with the ability to make clothes look fashionable! Lol, comfort and function are two words for me! As for he fact I’m a designer too, I spend almost 75% of my time! making other people look good.
Nonetheless, at least I’m handy in the kitchen!

The jumpsuit looks amusingly like a little kid’s onesie pajamas to me, even on a beautiful model. Anyone less perfectly slim would look like, well, an overgrown kid in onesies. Or possibly just like a slacker couch potato, given the light grey sweatpants overtones. I guess it’s easy to figure out my answer to your questions. But *if* I wanted the look, you can bet I’d cobble it (or any other I want to emulate) from much less spendy resources, as I always do. I’m about as far from Fashionista as one can get, but even when I succumb, fashion trends come and go too quickly for me to spend large quantities of my hard-won cash on any of them willingly, so I’d much rather have a bargain knock-off that won’t make me feel guilty of waste when I tire of it and either re-make it into yet another knock-off or give it to charity. 😉
