Time Flies

Time flies when you are having fun. I can’t believe that a year has passed since I started Back Road Journal. It has been such a great experience because of you…my readers. I have to thank everyone from around the world who has taken time to stop by for a visit, follow my blog and leave comments. Through your comments, you have made me laugh, taught me things I didn’t know, inspired and encouraged me.

Blogging has been a real journey for me. What you don’t know is that before I started my blog I was afraid of computers. I researched for months about blogging. Once I knew that I wanted to be part of WordPress, then I bought a book called The Complete Idiot’s Guide To WordPress. I read, underlined, and had sticky notes all over the book. One day my husband looked at me, shook his head and said “just do it”.  I wrote my first post “Let’s Take A Ride” and hit the publish button.

I wanted to write about my experiences with great food, interesting places and enjoyable pastimes  that I share with my husband along the back roads of New England and beyond.  I thought my posts would be interesting to some readers but never in my wildest dreams did I think that over 50,000 people would read my posts, with over 700 people subscribing to my blog. My passion for food, travel and gardening has introduced me to  new friends that I have never met face to face but feel as though I have known for years.

I have been fortunate to have received awards from fellow bloggers that you can find on my awards page. New ones have been passed to my blog and I would like to thank all those who considered my blog for the following:

One Lovely Blog Award
One Lovely Blog Award

The One Lovely Blog Award was passed along by Pamela at Spoon Feast and Amy at Afternoon Popcorn Snack.

ABC Award
ABC Award

The ABC Award  was passed along by Betsy at Bits and Breadcrumbs and Razel at Food Safari.

7 x 7 Link Award
7 x 7 Link Award

The 7 x 7 Link Award was passed along by Karen at Karen Cooking and Richard at REMCooks

Each of these awards wanted random bits of information about myself. If you are new to my blog and would like to learn a little more about me, you can look back to my post Surprises While Traveling when I was awarded the Versatile Blogger Award and the Liebster  Award.

For the 7 x 7 Award I was asked to list my post that I thought was:

The most beautiful…now this is hard. How do you pick your favorite child? I think it would be I Bid A Fond Farewell To Summer As I Look Forward To Fall.

The most helpful would be two gardening posts. Spring Has Arrived And The Battle Begins and Heirloom Tomato Seedlings.

The most popular would be Sicilian Pasta With Roast Cauliflower, Raisins, And Pine Nuts.

The most controversial was Spaghetti Alle Vongola/Spaghetti With Clams. The controversy was that most Italians in Italy do not believe that you should put cheese on seafood and yet many of you disagreed.

The most successful was Antique And Classic Wooden Boat And Car Show that made Freshly Pressed. Over 3,100 people have read this post. Wow!

The most underrated was The Spectacular Dolomites which was written while in Italy last fall. It was such a lovely section of Italy with natural beauty and wonderful food.

The most pride worthy would have to be my recipe for New Year’s Lobster Pot Pie that was named the Best Recipe of the Year by Wineguys Radio and TV. I was asked to be on their radio show to talk about the recipe. They also named Back Road Journal Blog of the Year.

As I start another year, I look forward to meeting more bloggers, reading the interesting posts that you write, and enjoy your wonderful photographs. I hope that each person that stops by Back Road Journal will enjoy my adventures with food, gardening and travel. I still have more treasures to find on the back roads…come along with me.

Seriously you deserve all that great press because you keep us readers interested and happy with delicious recipes, beautiful photos and sneak us into your suitcase!

Actually it is nicer because of all the wonderful readers that comment like you do. I’m so happy when I know people are enjoying my posts. I’ll aways sneak you into the suitcase.

  14. Karen, Karen, Karen…you rock! I am happy to say that I found you early into your blogging career and it has been a joy following you ever since. I haven’t had nearly the success you have had…so you will have to share some of the Idiot’s book secrets. ; )

    1. Now that is a nice compliment, “you rock”…I don’t believe anyone has said that before. You have been a loyal reader, commenter and even inspired one of my recipes. No secrets for success in the Idiot’s book just the basics on the nuts and bolts on getting a blog to work. Thanks for always making me laugh.

    1. Hi Laura, I am very lucky to have so many readers that enjoy my posts. Thank you for stopping by so often and your lovely compliment.

    1. Thank you Katie, for your nice wish. I know it will be fun because of having such nice bloggers following along. I hope you enjoy my upcoming gardening posts.

  15. Congratulations. You made me laugh when you said that you had bought The Complete Idiot’s Guide To WordPress, obviously it worked and you have produced a fantastic blog. Thanks so much for visiting my blog, love yours and I will be back. Keep up the good, and interesting work Diane

    1. Thank you Diane, for your lovely compliment. I do enjoy crossing over to France to read your lovely blog. It reminds me of all my wonderful trips there.

  16. Congratulazioni per il tuo Successo!!! I enjoy reading the wide variety of your posts, but my favourite ones are of your travels, and the descriptions of the food you were eating while traveling. I am so very happy for the success you have experienced through all of the work you have put into your blog! Much respect, Trina

    1. Grazie mille, Trina. I’m glad that you enjoy my blog. We both have a love for traveling and good food…especially in Europe. I know you will have a wonderful time with your family on your trip to Europe this summer.

  17. Congratulations! I’ve been following you, but haven’t read all your posts. The one about the antique boats brought back some really fond memories, as my dad had a tiny factory that built “solid mahogany” boats back in the 50’s. Couldn’t compete with Chris-Craft and had to close, but we would occasionally see one tooling around the gulf.

    1. Thank you Marian, for stopping by and your nice comment. I’m happy to have brought back memories of the boats that your dad built…I’m sure they were lovely. The antique boat show is an event that my husband and I always enjoy. The antique boats are true works of art.

  18. First of all, congratulations on your anniversary of blogging! I am right behind you on that. I have so enjoyed reading your posts of travels, learning more about places and food, and the fact that we share common interests in cars as well. It’s been great wandering the back roads with you, Karen! Congrats also on all the awards, and thank you for the mention. I look forward to seeing where you’re headed this year and armchair traveling with you. Cheers! ~Betsy

    1. Thank you Betsy, not only for your nice compliment but for being so kind to present my blog with the ABC Award. I’m glad that you enjoy following along with our travels. We do have a lot in common and I like that you enjoy the cars that are included in many of my posts.

  19. Congratulations on your first anniversary of blogging, Karen! You’ve been such an inspiration to me, I’m surprised to learn you’ve been at this for such a short time. Thank you for sharing your lovely home, the interesting places you visit, and of course all that wonderful food. Looking forward to seeing where your second year on WordPress takes us!

    1. Thank you Marlene, for your lovely compliment. The year went by so fast and was made enjoyable by having such nice followers like yourself. I’m so happy that you enjoy my posts and am looking forward to new adventures to share with everyone.

  20. CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! I so enjoy reading your blog and frequently wish I could write as well as you. Looking forward to many, many more reads. All the very best.

    1. Thank you Norma, for your kind words and compliment. I think that most bloggers have different styles of writing just as we write about different subjects…that is what makes each blog so interesting as far as I’m concerned. Your blog is perfect just the way it is. I’m happy that you enjoy my posts. If the rain ever stops, I want to let everyone see the spring garden in Maine.

    1. Thank you France for your nice compliment. I’m glad that you enjoyed what I thought were my best posts that fit each category.

  21. Something isn’t working as it should here … don’t get notifications when posts are posted lately.
Have to start finding posts – in readers – now .. really annoying. Especially if I miss the ones you post. Everything is ticked .. understand “nada.” – Congratulations to the award. This is a great post around an award.

    1. Hi Viveka, I am sorry that you are having problems with notifications of new posts. This is the first I have heard of this although someone mentioned a problem on another blog. I hope if others are having problems, they will let me know…it must be a glitch with WordPress. Thank you for your very nice comment and being such a loyal follower of my blog. I always enjoy your comments.

  22. Congrats on your first year! You need to keep going for many more years – I’ve just found you, so I have a lot of catching up to do! Great blog – I’ll be back.

    1. Thank you for stopping by Kitchenriffs, and your nice comment. I’m glad you have enjoyed your visit and I hope to have you return in the future.

  23. Congratulations dear Karen!!

  28. Fabulous Karen! A wonderful way to celebrate and now I’m looking forward to the next year and all that you will bring, And could I say thank you to your husband for the words “just do it” !

    1. I appreciate your compliment, Claire. I will be sure to pass on your “thank you” to my husband. He is always by biggest supporter in anything I do.

    1. Hi Susan, I thank you for your nice compliment. I’m glad to hear that you both enjoy my blog and look forward to your return.

I love gardening, and blogging about it, but it has been rather slow in getting it noticed. Thanks for your honesty and openness with sharing. Oh, and Happy Anniversary! 🙂 Dana

    1. Thank you Dana, for your lovely compliment. I feel flattered that I have inspired you to continue with your blogging. You have a very nice blog and I am sure you will start to get more readers. Gardeners are a very friendly group and would love to see your Irish garden. Give it time.

    1. Hi Jessica, Thank you very much for your nice compliment. The awards are so meaningful because they come from fellow bloggers.

    1. Thank you Michele, for your nice compliment. I always appreciate when I have new readers. I’m so happy that you enjoy my posts.

  33. Congratulations Karen–my blogging adventure started a year ago also! I am guilty of doing lots of research prior to starting, and since starting just pushing the same buttons without really knowing what I’m doing! I need to get better–at photography, writing (although I just want to keep it short!), of linking, etc!!! Thanks for visiting me, and you inspire me to continue and learn!
    🙂 Stacey

    1. Hi Stacy, Thank you for your compliment. It is amazing how fast the first year goes by. The research can make you a little more comfortable before starting on a new adventure…at least it did for me. I’m happy that I have given you inspiration to continue with blogging and think you do a great job.

  34. Congrats on the year milestone, time does fly. I have been blogging for almost two years and my life has been enriched by the whole experience. Makes me wonder if anyone ever has regrets in starting to blog! Enjoy the day.

    1. Thank you Tina, for your nice comment. I think you are so right about blogging enriching your life. You end up with so many people that you consider friends even though you never have had a chance to meet face to face. I hope no one regrets starting a blog. I’m sorry to say that many bloggers that I enjoyed reading have stopped their blogs but I hope it wasn’t because they regretted the experience.

  35. Congratulations on your one year anniversary, Karen. I have enjoyed your blog posts very much and am happy to get to know you better. Isn’t it amazing how our blogs change our lives? I had no idea about the journey I was beginning when I started blogging. I wouldn’t trade it for the world!

    1. Hi Cathy, I totally agree that blogging does change our lives and I certainly think for the better. It has been a wonderful experience and mostly because of readers such as yourself. Thank you for your nice compliment.

  36. Ah, sorry I’m late, but happy bloggiversary!!!! What an accomplishment. I can’t believe you’ve only had your blog for one year though…very impressive. So happy to have found your blog, and can’t wait for your future posts. 🙂 🙂

    1. Thank you Tin Man, for your very nice compliment. I plan to keep it up for as long as I have readers like yourself that enjoy my posts.

Here’s to another year of great blogging. 🙂

    1. Thank you so much for your nice compliment. There are still many things that I wish I knew how to do with my computer but I am slowly learning.

  42. OMG! I missed your anniversary! I’m so glad you’re no longer afraid of computers, because I love reading your blog. And look how big your tomato plants have gotten since their days in the tub! 🙂 Time certainly does fly!
