Lermoos…A Perfect Mountain Village

A perfect mountain village with spectacular views isn’t just a dream…it is a reality. Lermoos, in the Tirol region of Austria is a top contender for that title as far as I am concerned.  After days of rain and fog, the sun came out on our second day in Lermoos and look at the beautiful scenery that surrounds this Austrian village.

The Zugspitze, Germany’s Tallest Mountain As Seen From The Austrian Side

The hotel for this part of the journey was the lovely Hotel Post. The four hundred and fifty year old Post is a family owned hotel. It has been remodeled into a modern alpine spa hotel with a bright yellow exterior, painted shutters and wooden balconies with geraniums. The interior is decorated with a mixture of wood, stone, leather and warm colored fabrics…comfortable and luxurious at the same time.

The Comfortable Lobby Lounge
Now This Is My Idea Of A Good Bar

There are six dining rooms decorated in different styles. This one had a wonderful Tirol stube feel with a tiled stove to keep the room warm in the winter.

One Of The Dining Rooms

We had a beautiful “panorama” suite that I could live in quite easily…I think you will agree.

The Bedroom With Pocket Doors Separating It From The Sitting Room

The view from the rooms and balconies was breathtaking, no matter which direction you looked.

View Of The Zugspitze From The Balcony

Even the view out the bathroom window of the village church with the mountains in the background was terrific.

On two mornings, the sounds of cow bells had us out on the balcony watching cows being herded down the road to different pastures by a farmer and his two young boys. Even though the weather  was cool, each morning some of the guests enjoyed the heated pool below our living room balcony.

The Heated Outdoor Pool

If the heated outdoor pool isn’t to your liking, you can swim through an automatic door and enjoy the nice indoor pool with a whirlpool off to the side in the huge spa area. In the Alpine spa there are different saunas and steam rooms, a fitness room and even a snack bar with coffee and tea. There are indoor and outdoor rest areas…all with great views of the mountains. Daily activities included hiking, biking and trips to the countryside.

The hotel’s daily rate included a breakfast buffet, afternoon soups and salads, coffee and cakes, and a six course dinner with lots of options. There were regional specialties as well as inventive dishes with inspiration from many areas of the world.

Bell Pepper Mousse With A Mushroom Won Ton
Roast Of Veal With Cabbage And Potato Noodles
Fillet of Char With Creamed Spinach And Spinach Ravioli
Coconut Cake With Figs And Pistachio Ice Cream

As you can see, the trip to Lermoos was wonderful for many reasons. Spectacular vistas everywhere you turned, within easy driving distance for day trips over the border into the Bavarian countryside and a wonderful hotel in which to stay. The Hotel Post had a warm and professional staff that made our stay with them enjoyable in every way.

    1. Thank you Rosemary, for your nice compliment. Taking a photo in a restaurant is always a challenge. I’m using a new point and shot camera on this trip that seems to be doing a good job in the lower light situations. The veal was delicious.

  1. Spectacular photography and great commentary Karen. Don’t you just love those beautifully tiled stoves. Wouldn’t it be great if they were available in North America?

    1. Hi Reg, I appreciate your nice compliment about the post and photos. The tiled stoves are absolutely beautiful and yes, it would be lovely if they were available here.

    1. Hi Victoria, I’m glad that you enjoyed the post. The Tirol region of Austria is just beautiful…so happy that the fog lifted and the sun came out so that I could share the beauty with everyone. Thank you for your comment.

  2. What a charming hotel, and the view, so spectacular. I too could live in without any issues. Love the ceiling especially the Lobby Lounge ceiling.
Oh my, I am drooling over the food, can one ask for seconds?
Beautiful photos, thanks for taking me along (think I am repeating myself).

    1. Hi Norma, Thank you for your lovely compliment. We were so happy to have discovered the Hotel Post…it was wonderful in every way. The food was as good as it looks. I’m glad you are enjoying our journey.

  3. Those tiled stoves are great! So pretty, and I imagine pretty warm. Fun picture with the Veuve Clicquot bottles – I wonder if that’s every size bottle they market? I’d like one of the big ones, please. 😉 Tremendous scenery, and it looks like you’re continuing to eat well. The swimming pool with the automatic door is really a nifty idea! Sounds like a swell place – so happy you’re having a great time.

    1. Hi John, I appreciate you nice comment. Don’t you just love the collection of champagne bottles. One of my favorite champagnes to drink. The scenery, the hotel, the food…it was all wonderful.

    1. Hi Boleyn, Thank you for your nice comment. It really is a trip of a lifetime. Beautiful scenery, wonderful hotels and delicious food are what travel dreams are all about.

    1. Hi Marie, I’m glad you enjoyed the post. We have seen lovely fall foliage on this trip…just not the deep reds that we get in New England. I’m happy to say that I won’t be traveling during the storm. I hope it swings out to sea and disappears in the cold waters of the Atlantic.

  4. Absolutely LOVE. And there really should be a “love” button for certain posts…like this. By the way, I think we could travel well together. Just saying.

    1. Thank you for your very nice compliment, Heather. I’m glad you enjoyed the post and appreciate the thought of a “love” button. I think we would be good traveling companions as long as you can get all your chic clothing into a roll on suitcase. LOL.

    1. Hi Phil, The Tirol region of Austria really is amazing. The beauty of the countryside is unbelievable. We couldn’t have picked a nicer hotel to stay at in Lermoos than the Hotel Post…it was perfect.

    1. Hi Kay, We were so happy that the rain stopped but then we had fog so dense that we couldn’t see the mountains. Then the sun can out and oh my…such beauty. I’m glad you enjoyed the post. Thank you for your nice comment.

    1. Hi Pumpkin, I’m glad you enjoyed the photos…thank you for your compliment. I hope that the storm turns out to see and disappears into the cold waters of the Atlantic.

  5. Thanks for refreshing my memory of this beautiful area. I traveled to the Zugspitze from the Garmich-Partenkirchen side back in 1972. Such a breath taking area.

    1. Hi Bishop, I’m happy that I brought back good memories of your travels to the Zugspitze. My husband and I took his mother to the top of the Zugspitze from the Garmich-Partenkirchen side years back. You will see a post coming up about historic Partenkirchen. We made a day trip there from Lermoos.

  6. A wonderful post again and your photos are so stunning – Austria, that I really like – have friends in Vienna – fantastic country – their wines are outstanding too. Really like the hotel, this is Austria when it’s Austria. *smile Like the whole village too seen through your eyes – Your photos of the food is very professional done!
Karen, by the way I sent you an email – but it came back after 4 days as address unknown.

    1. Thank you Viveka, for your lovely compliment. I’m glad that you enjoyed the post and photos. I love the Austrian white wine, Gruner Veltliner…I have had more than a few glasses on this trip. LOL. I haven’t gotten an email from you as yet. My email address is backroad-journal@comcast.net. I hope it goes through.

      1. Sure I used that email address … but I will try again. Yes, I really like Austria too … great country. High standards on everything.

      2. I totally agree with you Viveka, about the high standards of everything in Austria. We find ourselves going back again and again.

  7. Karen, they should buy your photos for their advertisement! Not only the hotel looks luxurious and comfortable, but your photos are perfect. The views are beautiful (even me who lives in Switzerland, where we have more than enough of mountains, can admit it 😉 ).
The food looks marvellous and sophisticated.

    1. Thank you Sissi, for your kind words. I have a new point and shoot camera on this trip and so far I am very happy with the results as I hate carrying a big camera when traveling. You do have beautiful mountains in Switzerland…we have driven through them on other trips. We were very pleased with everything about the Hotel Post. The food was all very good and presented so nicely.

    1. Hi France, We really are having a wonderful trip. I can definitely say that if you followed this years itenerary through Germany and Austria…I know you would have a great time. I’m glad that you are enjoying our adventure. Thank you for your comment.

    1. Hi Christine, Thank you for stopping by to visit and your nice comment. I agree, I’d take the biggest bottle as well as it is one of my favorite Champagnes.

    1. Hi Larry, Thank you for your nice compliment. We really are staying at some wonderful places with delicious food. I’d be more than happy to help with suggestions if you plan a trip to Europe.

  8. Thank you so much for this post…my eyes just went for a short vacation…beautiful pictures as always.
Hope you are enjoying your week Karen 🙂

    1. Thank you Juliana, for your nice compliment. I’m glad that you enjoyed the post and photos. It is a great week…I hope yours is as well.

  9. That is so beautiful, Karen. I just love the scenery. And that hotel is spectacular. It’s hard to believe it’s 450 years old. We don’t have anything that old here in Australia xx

    1. Hi Charlie, I’m glad that you enjoyed the post…thank you for your lovely compliment. The Hotel Post was truly wonderful in every way imaginable. I know what you mean about the age of the hotel…our countries are so new by comparison.

    1. Hi John, Our stay in the Tirol area of Austria was wonderful. The Hotel Post will definitely be on our list of places to return to if we have the opportunity. Thank you for your comment.

    1. Thank you Chunklet, for your nice compliment. I’m glad that you enjoyed the photos. The Tirol region of Austria is absolutely beautiful.

    1. Hi Kristy, This trip is about returning to some our favorite places but the Hotel Post was a new destination on this year’s journey. It will now be on our “must return to” list because it was wonderful. It has everything that you could ever dream about when considering a hotel. I’m glad you enjoyed the post and photos. I’m flattered that you would use the Zugspitze photo for your wallpaper at work. Thank you very much for your nice comment.

    1. Hi Emil, I have to agree with you about the beauty of the Tirol region of Austria. It is perhaps one of the loveliest places that I have visited. Thank you for your comment.

  10. That’s a beautiful village, though it looks like you took one of those fantastic red trees from New England with you! I see you went to the right place for dinner again 😉

    1. Hi Mad Dog, I was very surprised to see so many maple trees with beautiful colors…they did remind me of New England foliage. Yes, we are dining very well. I tend to plan my trips around food first, accommodations second, and the natural beauty of the area third. I’m a foodie after all…but of course, you know that by now. Thank you for your nice comment.

  11. Yes, I could easily move right into that suite for a very long time. The presentation of the food is beautiful & I assume the taste is too. That coconut cake looks like it has some type of glaze on top – with the figs and ice cream…delightful.

    1. Hi Diane, I’m glad that you agree that the suite is somewhere that anyone would be very happy spending lots and lots of time in…it was large and lovely. The food was definitely as good as it looked. I think what you see on the little cakes was just the natural caramelization of the coconut with butter. The dessert truly was a lovely combination of flavors.

  12. awesome photos.. spectacular views.. if i’m there i’m sure you’ll find me taking photos of the hotel lobby’s ceiling.. it’s wonderful.. thank you for sharing your photos..

    1. Thank you Elizabeth, for your nice compliment. I’m glad that you enjoyed the photos. It is nice to know that you enjoyed the decor of the hotel as much as I did. I always enjoy the mix of styles that make a room so comfortable and welcoming.

  13. Had never seen Zugspitze from this side, but it was the first mountain for me as a child in post WWII Europe going up the Garmisch Partenkirchen way! Took my own kids a generation later: lovely area and am glad another post from it will be due. Loved the Hotel and the meal, prefer Krug over the Widow [;) !], but would love to reach into the screen for a glass and oh, to swim from the inside to the outside 🙂 ! Wunderschön!

    1. Hi Eha, I’m glad that you enjoyed seeing the Zugspitze from the other side. I think most people see the Zugspitze when visiting Garmisch Partenkirchen. Krug is an excellent Champagne as well…I’d take a glass.

    1. Hi Smidge, I’m glad that you enjoyed the photos from Lermoos. I think Post is such a common name for a hotel because that is where the mail (post) coaches originally stopped. I would love to visit Lake Louise sometime as I know it must be beautiful.

  14. You are outdoing yourself with this trip. Everything is lovely to say the least. We’ve not been to this area of Austria. Looks like something to put on the list.

    1. Hi Linda, I’m glad you enjoyed the post about Lermoos. I would definitely put the Tirol region of Austria on your list of places to visit. It is such a beautiful area. There are more lovely places on our itinerary yet to come. Thank you for your nice compliment.

  15. I would have to agree…top contender for a perfect mountain village judging from that opening shot and the row of Veuve bottles is a pretty spectacular view, too! A lovely hotel, town and more amazing food. That coconut cake looks to die for.

    1. Hi Betsy, It doesn’t get much prettier than Lermoos…especially on a sunny day. It was so nice when the fog lifted and we had the wonderful view of the impressive mountains. Staying at the Hotel Post was wonderful…the food, service and amenities were all first class.

  16. As wonderful as the hotel, accommodations, and food all sounds — and wonderful doesn’t begin to describe them — I’m just so happy for you that the clouds broke and gave you some sunshine. Those views are spectacular and it would have been a shame to have missed any of them because of cloud cover. This truly is a magnificent part of the World, Karen. Thanks for taking us along.

    1. Thank you John, for your lovely comment. It is terrible to visit the mountains and not be able to see them because of cloud cover and fog. We really needed a little sunshine on this trip and what a spectacular place to be when the sun finally came out. I’m glad that you are enjoying following along on our adventure.

    1. Hi Cathy, Thank you for your compliment. I’m glad that you are enjoying following along on our journey. You are right…the Hotel Post is first class in every way.

  17. What a beautiful view of the mountains – don’t know how you can resist just sitting there and having a cup of hot chocolate! Love that heater with the tile…special place for sure!

    1. Hi Susan, I’m so happy that the sun came out while we were in Lermoos because the views are absolutely beautiful. I loved the warm and inviting atmosphere at the hotel…especially the tile stoves.

    1. Hi Meg, I’m glad that you enjoyed the post about Lermoos. After so much rain, we were happy that the sun came out so that we could enjoy the beautiful scenery.

    1. Hi Giovanna, I’m glad that you are enjoying following our travel adventures. I know that you would enjoy visiting any of the places that we have been to. They would be perfect for your “bucket list”. Have a lovely weekend as well.

  18. Incredible views, Karen. The mountains just put me in totally different frame of mind; they are so humbling. And I can just smell the crisp mountain air. I hope your weather is nice, it’s been raining most days with an odd day here and there of warm sun.

    1. Hi Jed, I was like you and had only seen and been to the top of the Zugspitze from the German side. It is just as impressive from the Austrian side. Thank you for your comment.

    1. Hi Karen, Two Karens in one family might be a little confusing but I’ll put you on the list of people that want me to adopt them. LOL. Everything about our stay in Lermoos was wonderful.

  19. It’s a privilege tagging along with you Karen…so kind of you to make extra room for us all! That’s a very VERY beautiful corner of the world and your photos have done her justice (which isn’t exactly a slam-dunk!) Happy, that of ALL places, the sun broke through the skies for you HERE, on top of the world! Continued safe and happy travels!

    1. Thank you Spree, for your lovely compliment and wish. It is nice to know that you are enjoying following along on our trip. We really couldn’t see the mountains driving to Lermoos. We were thrilled when the sun can out during our stay there…such beautiful scenery to enjoy.

  20. What an absolutely gorgeous hotel! Opulence! I love the view of the church from the windows, with fog and mountains so lovely in the background. Six dining rooms! Karen, this is a special place. I’m sure you are having an exceptionally lovely time. My son has traveled a lot more than I have, and has said more than once that Austria was spectacular. Continue to travel safely and take it all in! Great photos! Debra

    1. Hi Debra, Thank you for your nice compliment. I’m glad that you enjoyed the photos. I loved the view of the church, it reminds me of scenes from the Sound of Music. Your son is right…Austria is spectacular.

    1. Hi Christine, Thank you for your nice compliment. We are having a wonderful time. I know that you will enjoy Austria. We have been twice for Christmas and it is lovely when everything is coated in white.

    1. Hi Ducky, Lermoos is such a beautiful place to visit. All the meals we had at the Hotel Post were terrific. The char with the creamed spinach and ravioli was excellent.

    1. Hi Suzanne, We thought that the Hotel Post was perfect in every way. Wasn’t the food beautifully presented…it was as good as it looked. Thank you for your comment.

  21. Karen, these are unbelievably breathtaking photos of Lermoos, the mountains, the food, the hotel, just everything! We visited Lermoos twice when I was a child but I do not remember it well, I was too young but your post makes me daydream a bit and think that we certainly have to visit Lermoos again, this time with our kids, it is just wonderful!

    1. Thank you Andrea, for your very nice compliment. I’m so glad that we visited Lermoos. I know you would enjoy returning with your family as there are so many activities to enjoy in this area. It certainly makes a great base for exploring Bavaria as well.

  22. Lermoos sounds very lovely & that hotel looks amazing, very cosy too! The food dishes look so tempting especially the veal roast & the dessert! Beautiful pics too! Waw!

    1. Thank you Sophie, for your nice compliment. I’m glad that you enjoyed the photos. Lermoos and the Hotel Post were wonderful. This is a hotel that is on my list to return to if I am lucky enough to be in that area again.

    1. Hi Carol, It was a wonderful trip and this particular hotel had some of the most stunning views on our trip. Thank you for taking time out of your studies to stop by and leave your nice compliment.
