The Loon, A Magnificent Bird

The Loon,  A Magnificent Bird, is a much loved symbol of the northern lakes of our country and Canada. In Maine, the water bird is featured on one of its license plates and on the bottom of the plate, it states “A Natural Treasure”. With its iridescent black head and a neck that is ringed with a white necklace, deep red eyes, and its black and white spotted wings, it truly is a beautiful water bird.

With its haunting call that some people think resembles the mournful howl of a wolf, the loon symbolizes the northern wilderness of Maine to many people. You don’t have to trek into the wilderness though to see this beautiful bird, as it lives in many areas that happen to be tourist destinations.

Loon Swimming Off Our Dock
Loon Swimming Off Our Dock

At our summer cottage on Long Lake, we are fortunate to have several loons that swim within sight of our dock. A couple of weeks ago, I was sitting out on our dock and kept hearing peeping sounds and decided to investigate. Much to my delight, there was a baby loon chick. No more than a week old,  it was swimming by the shoreline bushes next to our beach and peeping up a storm.

This little loon chick was nothing but a tiny fluff ball floating through the water. To compare its size, look at the leaves on the bush that are less than two inches long.

In its discoveries of the new world surrounding it,  the chick ventured up onto our beach.

To give you another indication of how tiny it is, what looks like yellow bits of sand is pine pollen what has washed up on the beach. After a few minutes on land, it was time to head back into the lake. And what an entrance it made, literally trying to walk on water.

Looking at this tiny bird, it is hard to imagine that in a short few months that it will grow into a beautiful bird like its parents. Come late September, it will be joining its parents on a migration south to waters that will not be frozen over for the winter.

Once the northern lakes have thawed next spring, the loons will make their way back north…hopefully making their home on our lake again next summer.

I hope you have enjoyed the photos of some of nature’s beautiful gifts. I think there is something special about loons…they are a magnificent bird, in my opinion.

If you would like to hear what loons sound like, you might enjoy revisiting last year’s post “The Cry Of The Loon”.

  1. Beautiful bird. Such cute baby. What fun watching it grow into adulthood, looking forward to seeing photos of its progress. Hope they return to your dock next year.

    1. Hi Norma, I have to agree with you about loons. They are such a pretty bird. I do hope the young loon swims close enough and stays long enough for me to run from the beach to get my camera for more photos.

    1. Thank you Judy, for your compliment. I’m glad that you enjoyed the photos. I think it would be impossible to not love the beauty of loons.

  2. OMG! Gorgeous loon photos. You captured the beauty perfectly – dark, rich eyes and peaceful demeanor. They are among my favorites as well.

Yet, I think to truly love loons, you must also hear that haunting call. Worth a trip up north just for that alone in my humble opinion 🙂

    1. Thank you Jeannee, for your nice compliment. I’m happy that you enjoyed the photos. I just love the haunting call…I’m always so happy to hear it for the first time each summer. I then know that the loons have returned for another year at the lake.

  3. Stunning photos of a bird that isn’t that glad to be around people .. and the little one – how cute can one be. Such a beautiful bird – and I love the way they sound – it’s so calming, but it’s a sad sound they have. It has loneliness in it’s calls, but I just love listen to it. Where my aunt had her summer house up in northern part of Sweden .. by a lake .. and every evening I could sit on her dock and listen to the loon. I never saw one … Wonderful photos, Karen …

    1. Thank you Viveka, for your lovely compliment. We have been very lucky to see the loons come so close. They seem to like our little bit of beach area. I think they nest very close by and seem to stay in our area. I thought last year was a once in a lifetime experience with the loons. Yet I was given another opportunity to experience them close up again this year. 🙂

      1. That little chick is so so cute .. never seen a chick before – not even on photo. You have a fantastic summer place – and to have something like that on your doorstep. You’re lucky.

      2. I had seen photos of the baby chicks but seeing this little one was a first for me…especially coming up on our beach. Last year, I thought I was very fortunate to see the one that was probably four or five week old come up on the beach. Each time I get an opportunity like this, I say it is a once in a lifetime event so I agree, I’m very lucky. 🙂

  4. Karen, a wonderful and utterly delightful summer post about the amazing loon!
Hope you are spending a wonderful summer vacation – we are in the midst of a real heatwave here.
Liebe Grüße aus dem heißen Bonn – kind regards from a very warm City of Bonn!

    1. Hi Andrea, I’m happy that you enjoyed the post about the loons. Even though we are thousands of miles apart, our weather has been similar. First so many grey and rainy days and now we have had seven days in July over 90. It is very unusual for it to be so hot at the lake. Thank goodness that we are back in the 70’s for this week.

  5. They are beautiful birds. We get a few that wander into Colorado during migration. And right now we even have a Pacific Loon that’s been here all Summer, on a lake in Eastern Colorado. I’ve only seen the Common Loon in breeding colors in Michigan, and loved listening to them. And have never seen a baby. Adorable.

    1. Hi Lea Ann, I’m glad you agree about how beautiful loons are. I have only seen photos of the Pacific Loon…also beautiful. I love listening to them…their call is so haunting. Adorable is right, when it comes to describing the tiny chick.

  6. No matter where my life’s journey takes me.
    The call of the Loon,
her echoes will forever be in my mind.
    Reminding me of a time.
A time where gliding on a glassy pond,
singing with contentment is all that really matters
I so love the loon and it has been years since I have heard her call……….you make me longful for a return to Maine!

    1. I so enjoyed you wonderful comment, Tin Man. I do hope you get a chance to relieve your experience in Maine sometime in the future. Once you have heard the call of a loon, you will never forget it.

    1. Thank you David, for your nice compliment. I’m glad that you enjoyed the photos. Yes, I do agree that you tend to associate the call of a loon with the North Woods.

  7. These pictures remind me of my dad’s cabin in Wisconsin and really make me want to go up there RIGHT this MINUTE! Love it!

    1. Hi Emilie, I’m glad that my post reminded you of your dad’s cabin. I’m sure it is wonderful as that is a beautiful part of our country. I hope you get a chance to visit soon. 🙂

    1. Hi Larry, Loons really are a pretty waterbird…I’m glad that I could share my photos with you. I really was lucky with the photos but you can’t imagine how many I took to get some good ones. Thank you for your compliment.

  8. What a magnificent bird to watch and marvel — the chick is just precious. I love the photo where it looks like the chick is floating on ripples of gold, so beautiful. Thanks for letting us sit on your beach for a bit. 🙂

    1. Hi Judy, I have to agree with you. I so enjoy watching the loons on our lake each summer. I liked that photo of the chick, too. Everything was just right, the light and the shallow water and of course the cute chick. Thank you for your nice compliment…I’m glad you enjoyed the post.

    1. Thank you Tiny, for your nice compliment. I’m glad that you enjoyed the post and photos of the loons. This was my first time seeing a chick so young. Last year one about four or five weeks came up on our beach as well but this tiny one was so cute.

    1. Thank you TW, I’m glad you enjoyed the photos. The loons swim off our dock every summer but I’ve been very lucky to have had two close encounters with them.

  9. Although I live in Kansas, I’ve been enraptured by loons since seeing ‘On Golden Pond’

As only Katherine Hepburn could deliver it: “Listen Henry, it’s the loons”.

Never thought of the neck markings as a necklace but probably will always see it that way going forward. How blessed you are to live where you do and witness nature in all its glory including a little loon chick.

Thanks so much for this charming post.

    1. Thank you Patrick, for your very nice compliment. I’m happy to know that you enjoyed the post. I think of Katherine Hepburn and her statement about the loons when I hear them as well. My husband and I really are lucky to live in an area with so much wonderful nature around us. 🙂

  10. How much fun to have a loon chick! You’ll be able to take pictures of it growing up – what a treat! Great pictures – once again I feel as if we’re right there enjoying Maine with you!

    1. Hi John, I was thrilled to spot the loon chick and was so happy when it swam up on our beach. I haven’t seen it since…I hope I’ll get another chance. I’m always happy to hear that you enjoy my posts about our summers in Maine…thank you!

  11. Great photos, Karen. We just had a pair of Carolina Wrens nest in one of the jarro planters on the patio of our back yard. They had three babies who have now all fledged. It’s always fun to watch the beauty of nature at work. 🙂

    1. Thank you Richard, for your nice compliment. It really is fun having the opportunity to experience nature up close. I’m happy that you enjoyed seeing the photos of the loons.

    1. Thank you Boleyn, for your lovely compliment. I’m glad that you enjoyed the photos of the loons. You are right…you do tend to think of the sound of loons being heard on a secluded pond.

    1. Hi Diane, Thank you for stopping by for a visit and your nice compliment. I’m happy to know that you enjoyed the post and photos. Try to stay cool. 🙂

  12. Beautiful photos! I was lucky enough last summer when we went Down East to our friends camp on Donnell’s pond in Franklin to see and listen to these beautiful creatures! Again, your photos are stunning!

    1. Hi Mary, I think we are so lucky when we get to enjoy these wonderful birds. I’m happy that you enjoyed the photos. Thank you for you nice compliment.

  13. Such a fantastic post, Karen. I’m reading “Walden” by Thoreau, and yesterday I was sitting by the pool reading his chapter on the loon diving in Walden Pond and him trying to get close to it. I had no idea what a loon looked like and never imagined it to be such a wonderful creature. Fabulous photographs and I love your place in Maine. You’ve made my day:)

    1. Hi Roger, I’m so happy to know that you can now picture in your minds eye the loon that Thoreau was trying to get close to. Loons really are a magnificent waterbird. I’m such a novice when it comes to photography…especially when trying to capture moving subjects. I really appreciate your compliment…you made my day as well. 🙂

  14. You are indeed fortunate. We’ve been coveting the Maine weather, as it’s been TOO HOT for us in Rhode Island (but we shouldn’t complain, having spent the past 2 years in Tennessee–why are we always looking for perfection?) Speaking of heaven on earth–your loons are indeed magnificent. Lucky you!

    1. Hi Tracy, As far as hot weather goes, Maine has been much hotter than usual as well but this week it should be back to normal. I think it is just part of our nature to wish for perfection but when nature is involved that is hard achieve. I do think we are lucky to be able to spend our summers in such a wonderful place where nature is all around us. I’m glad you think the loons are magnificent too.

    1. You are right, Diane…as beautiful as the grown loon is, the little chick is stealing everyone’s heart. I’m happy to know that you enjoyed the photos and thank you for your nice compliment.

    1. Hi Nazneen, I totally agree with you…we both live in parts of the country where nature surrounds us with beauty. The markings on the loon are like nature’s beautiful study in black and white. 🙂

    1. Thank you Gary, for your nice compliment. I’m glad to know that you enjoyed the loon photos. They really are a wonderful bird.

    1. Hi Carine, Thank you for stopping by to visit and your nice compliment. I’m glad that you enjoyed the photos of the loons. Yes, the little one seems to be stealing the show over the adult even as beautiful as it is.

    1. So true, Suzanne…the loon’s black and white patterns could be a wonderful inspiration when decorating a room. The adult is as beautiful as the chick is cute.

  15. Great pictures Karen! Loons are so interesting looking. I just get fascinated when I see them in person. They are hard to stop looking at. 🙂

    1. Thank you Kristy, I’m glad you enjoyed the photos…thank you for your compliment. I love watching them from our dock during the summer.

  16. Karen, thank you for sharing your beautiful photographs… I find great serenity in nature… we have a series of duck ponds not too far from our home and we cycle there when the weather is sufficiently warm. Your photo titled A moment… is a cracker!

    1. I’m glad that you enjoyed the post, Lizzy. It is so true…we spend most all our time outside when at the cottage and it is serene and relaxing. I can’t believe how close I was able to get to the chick when it was on the beach. I’m happy that you enjoyed the photo and thank you for your nice compliment. 🙂

  17. Hi Karen!
What a cutie baby loon . I’m so happy you were able to get such good photos of him.
We love the calls of the loons—I had often heard them, but had not actually seen one until last year!
They are indeed beautiful birds. You have some very nice “guests” at your lake. Enjoy!

    1. Hi Sue, You gave me a smile with your comment. We do have some wonderful “guests” that show up at the lake. I’m glad that you enjoyed the post and the photos of the little chick…it really was adorable.

    1. Hi Lynda, I was so happy that the loons came so close so that I could get photos to share with everyone. Loons really are beautiful birds and I glad that you enjoyed the photos of them. I’m sure your time at the camp in Maine was terrific. There is a well known boy’s camp across the lake from us.

    1. Hi Chris, I hope that you get the chance to see the loons that are on your lake as they are a beautiful bird. I’m glad that you enjoyed the photos…thank you.

    1. I agree with you Mary, the little chick was the cutest little ball of fluff I have seen. I’m glad that you enjoyed the photos. We are lucky to spend our summers in such a wonderful spot.

    1. Thank you Julie, for your nice compliment. I’m happy to know that you enjoyed the photos of the loons. You are right, the little chick was so cute and fluffy. 🙂

  18. Great post and amazing photos that really catch the spirit of the moment. You should frame some of these photos as they are very beautiful. Do you remember the movie “On the golden Pond?” Take Care, BAM

    1. Hi Bam, I’m happy that you enjoyed the post and photos. I was very lucky to be able to get so close to the loons. Yes, “On Golden Pond” was a memorable movie…I think of it often when I hear the loons. Thank you for your nice compliment.

  19. I have heard of the Loon bird but, realized when reading your post that I had never seen one. They are indeed a beautiful bird…the chick well, he was over the top adorable.

    Velva

    1. Hi Velva, I’m glad that you agree about the beauty of loons. You are so right…the chick was absolutely the cutest little thing. 🙂

  20. Their plumage really is spectacular! I’ve never heard of them before. What a wonderful way to spend summer, with your own beach and, if it’s yours, your own float. I’m not sure what they’re called here to be honest. It’s featured in the penultimate photo, with steps. I’m nervous of swimming unless there is one of those nearby 🙂

    1. Hi Johnny, The plumage is indeed spectacular. I’m happy that the loon swam close enough to capture it’s beautiful design. We do have a lovely place to spend our summers. The swim platform that you see in many of my photos is our neighbor’s but we are welcomed to use it.

  21. Oh Karen: what wonderful photos of such a beautiful bird . . and its baby chick! You must have had a very long lense camera: surely neither Mother nor Child would allow such closeup photography. The sound is unusual – I really have to ask friends in Estonia whether we too had them [I left as a child!] – if Viveka talks about them in Sweden: we are almost at the same latitude with water all around . . .

    1. Hi Eha, I was very lucky to get the photos and I’m glad you enjoyed them. Actually, the loon was swimming about 10 feet off the dock and didn’t seem to be bothered by my presence although I moved very slowly. I was able to get closer to the chick when it was on the beach. I did some checking and loons are found in Estonia. They are sometimes referred to as divers in Europe and Asia. Thank you as always for your nice compliment.

      1. Thank you so much Karen 🙂 ! The word ‘diver’ is much more familiar: am looking forwards to seeing what I can find myself on the Estonian websites when I find a moment . . .I DO love the look of the adult bird!!

    1. Hi Lorraine, I love the beautiful black and white design on the loons. It looks like they are dressed for a formal ball…all they need is a top hat. 🙂

    1. I’m glad you agree, Michelle. The adult is beautiful and the chick is so cute. I’m happy you enjoyed the photos of the loons.

  22. You certainly did not disappoint, Karen. Babies! I’ve been waiting for the loons, certain you’d be sharing when you arrived at your beautiful lake spot. This little baby is just so sweet, and how wonderful that you were there to photograph the little guy. I have remembered last year’s post since I read it, thinking they are just beautiful birds. Enjoy!

    1. Hi Debra, Thank you for your kind words, they are very much appreciated. I’m happy to know that you were looking forward to another post about the loons on our lake. I can’t believe how incredibly lucky I was for that little chick to come up on our beach. He must have known that I wanted to share it’s cuteness with everyone.

    1. Hi Carolyn, I have to agree with you about the little chick being adorable. Last year we had one a few weeks older come up on our beach but this one was so little and cute.

  23. Oh how gorgeous. What luck you had seeing this little beautiful little baby. Nature surely is an incredible thing

    1. Hi Tania, I truly was very lucky to be able to enjoy that baby chick for a few minutes. It was all about being in the right place at the right time. 🙂 I’m glad you enjoyed the photos…thank you.

    1. Hi Sam, I’m glad you agree with me about the beauty of loons. Their markings are so pretty they almost don’t look real. The baby was so cute, I can see why everyone loves it.

  24. I’ve seen them…when I lived in Michigan. Absolutely beautiful and your photos are perfection, Karen. How ever did you get so close? That baby is the dearest little thing!

    1. Hi Barbara, I’m happy to know that you have seen them yourself…they truly are beautiful. I was sitting on our dock and the adult loon keep swimming closer and closer. I ran up to the cottage for my camera and went back slowly onto the dock. It didn’t seem to be bothered by me presence. I heard the peeping and saw the chick in the bushes by the beach. I ran down and to my surprise the chick ventured onto the beach. In the right place, at the right time and ever so lucky. Thank you for your nice compliment.

    1. Thank you Southern, for your nice compliment. I’m happy that you enjoyed the post and photos. You are right…the chick is too cute!

    1. Hi Christin, Thank you for stopping by for a visit and your nice comment. My husband and I love spending our summers at the lake surrounded by the beauty of nature.

    1. Thank you Meg, I’m glad you enjoyed the photos. You definitely can see the beginnings of the distinctive plumage it will have when grown.

  25. What a brave little guy coming up on the beach all on his own! Hope he (or she) grows big and strong for the big flight this fall.

    1. Hi Ruth, I was surprised to see the chick so far away from its parent…very brave indeed. Hopefully it will grow up and successfully make the journey south this fall. 🙂

    1. Hi Dedy, As far as I know, all loons are in northern areas of the world. I’m happy that you enjoyed the post…thank you for your comment.

  26. Aw, what a great shot of the baby loon! Too cute! We just got back from northern Wisconsin and saw lots of loons, but no chicks. We did see a number of bald eagles…loved that.

    1. Hi Liz, I’m glad that you enjoyed the photo of the chick. In the three years that we have spent summers at the lake, this is the first time I’ve seen one so small. We have an eagle that lives nearby on the lake. I’ll never get a photo though as I have only seen it when it is flying. It sounds like you had a wonderful time seeing so much of nature’s beauty…that’s nice.

  27. I remember many a morning at camp being awakened by a loon. My father loved them and my mother thought they were way too loud. I just liked to see them at dusk floating on the water with that telltale silhouette that only a loon has.

You were very lucky to see the baby because we spent summers at camp and never saw a baby up close.

    1. Hi Maureen, I do consider myself very lucky that I saw the chick. A was a once in a lifetime opportunity that it came up on our beach to investigate. I’m like your father when it comes to listening to them…they always make me smile.

  28. These pictures bring back some memories. We did a 3 week camping trip through British Columbia and it was during this trip that we were introduced to this beautiful bird. Loved waking up and going to sleep with their call. I especially love the pictures of the ducklings. Didn’t see any of those on our trips. Thanks for sharing these pictures with us.

    1. I’m glad you enjoyed the post, MJ. Your camping trip in British Columbia must have been wonderful…glad that this post reminded you of it. I’m happy that I was able to get photos of the chick as I may never see another.

  29. Last summer I was fishing from shore throwing out lures. A loon took after one… I could see it darting back and forth under water chasing the lure. I had to reel it in in short order to keep the loon from catching it. INCREDIBLE!

    1. Hi Steve, What a story…I’m glad you got the lure in before the loon got to it. They are incredible divers when they are after a fish.

  30. Hi Karen, what wonderful pictures of both the adult and baby loon. Aren’t all babies just adorable? It is so nice for us to be able to enjoy such a peaceful and relaxing moment at your lake house. Thank you! 😉

    1. Thank you Dana, for your lovely compliment about my photos of the loons. You are right, babies of all kinds are adorable. I’m happy that you enjoy the posts when we are at our summer cottage on the lake…thank you.

  31. Isn’t the Loon one of the most beautiful birds ever created? I don’t see them down here, probably because it is too hot but up north in Canada, they are plentiful but I am surprised they are in Maine – although I don’t know why! Wonderful photography!!

    1. Hi Kelli, I’m so glad that you agree with me about the beauty of loons. Loons are present in many of the northern parts of our country…happily Maine is well known for them. Thank you for your nice compliment, I’m glad that you enjoyed the photos.

    1. Hi Kate, I’m happy to know that you enjoyed the photos of the loons. I was extremely lucky to be able to photograph them from such a close distance. Thank you for your compliment and for your wish, I have been well. Hopefully you are well and staying warm during your winter season.

    1. Thank you Katerina, for your nice compliment. I’m glad that you enjoyed the photos. That little chick was very brave…I’m sure I will see it in summers to come swimming out on the lake.

    1. Hi Darryl, It truly was a treat…actually a once in a lifetime experience, I’m sure. I glad to know that you enjoyed the post and considered it as treat. Thank you for your compliment.

    1. Thank you Sissi, for your kind words. I’m happy to know that this post gave you a feeling of being on a holiday, if only for a few minutes. 🙂

    1. Hi Kay, You are the second reader who has expressed that this post made them feel like they were on a mini vacation…if only for a moment. Thank you for your lovely compliment. 🙂

    1. Hi Jessica, I’m happy to know that this post brought back nice memories of your home on a lake. It truly is a pleasure to sit on the dock and enjoy the water and all the wildlife.

    1. Thank you Amy, for your lovely compliment. I’m glad that you enjoyed the post about the loons. I’m happy to know that you enjoy them as much as I do.

  32. Oh my gosh – the babies are so cute! I’m such a bird lover. You should see the feeders in my backyard! My favorite here in Seattle is the heron, but the loon has such a striking beauty, I’m on the fence now as to which would be my favorite.

    1. Hi Kristi, I’m happy to know that you enjoy birds like I do…the little loon cute was very cute. We used to live in Key Largo, Florida where there were so many herons. I haven’t seen any in Maine but there is a blue heron that visits our pond at the orchard in New Hampshire. Thank you for your nice comment. I’m happy that you enjoyed the post.

  33. We too have loons on our lake in the Eastern Townships of Quebec. Just last night, I was sitting on the patio with my uncle from Belgium and we could hear the haunting call of one loon, and a laughing kind-of call of another. It was just wonderful, as are your photos!

    1. Hi Lidia, I’m glad that you have loons in your area and that you enjoy their haunting call like I do. I’m happy that you enjoyed the photos of the loons…thank you.

  34. Ooooh, that chick is SO cute!!! Squeak squeak! 😀 The plumage of the loon is indeed beautiful – do you know if it’s a type of camouflage? It looks like the patterns they paint some military boats with to make visual identification from a distance difficult.

    1. Hi Charles, I have to agree with you about the chick. I was thrilled when I heard its cheeping and ran for my camera. I have no idea about the markings…great question.

  35. I love your loon photos and find myself wishing we had more loons on the harbor. It is rare we see one here so have to be satisfied with the sea birds. These do not keep us awake at night which I hear that loons are capable of!

    1. Thank you Linda, for your compliment. I’m glad that you enjoyed the photos. The loons have never kept us awake. Their call a night is just to locate their mate who is usually never too far apart. As a matter of fact, I find it a very restful call. You hear it being included on lots of the soothing and meditative music that you can buy today.

  36. Karen, when I lived in Iowa and we would travel north to Canada to spend time on remote lakes that we literally were boated to since no roads led to those remote lakes, I distinctly remember the ‘loons’. What nice memories! Your photos are absolutely extraordinary! Have you ever thought of doing a post on your photog skills? xoxo, happy summer ~ roz

    1. Hi Roz, I’m happy to know that the post brought back nice memories of your time spent on the remote lakes of Canada. As to the photos, I’m very flattered. When I’m taking photos of animals in the wild, whether it is a butterfly or the loons, my camera is always on the automatic setting. The second thing I do is to constantly shoot. I took over 100 photos of the loons as they moved to get just a couple of good ones for this post. Thank you for your kind words, they are much appreciated.

    1. Hi Val, Isn’t the chick adorable. I’m surprised that you are the first of my many Canadian readers to mention that the loon is on the $1 coin…I didn’t know that.

  37. This brings back memories of my parent’s cottage in northern Wisconsin. We would always hear the loons. I loved their call. What a treat to see a loon chick! I had never seen one in all the years we spent in their lake.

    1. Hi Susan, I’m happy that you enjoyed the post and that it brought back fond memories of time spent at your parent’s cottage. I think that once you have head the haunting call of a loon…you never forget it. I believe that seeing the chick was probably a once in a lifetime experience. I’m happy that I could share the photos with everyone.

  38. Beautiful bird! However, I don’t think reading through a wonderful tribute (post) to such a unique creature should be so closely followed by the title of the previous post, “Grilled Duck With Cherry Sauce”….eeegads! Maybe someone else already commented on that coincidence….I didn’t have time to read through your nearly 200! responses (you are a good blogger for taking time to respond to so many fans).

    1. Hi Heather, I’m glad that you like the post. Maybe I should have you edit my blog…no, I take that back. Since you are now a vegan, you would probably delete the majority of my posts as they are mostly beef, pork, and fowl. 🙂 I am lucky to have so many wonderful readers like yourself…you always make me laugh. I feel that if someone takes the time to comment, I should take the time to answer their comment.

  39. Awwww, the babies are adorable! I’ve been startled by loons may times canoeing but I’ve never seen such great close-ups… thanks for sharing!

    1. Hi Rachel, I’m glad you enjoyed the post. This was a first for me…I’d only seen photos of young chicks. They really are an adorable fluff ball.

    1. Thank you Claire, I appreciate your compliment. You are right, the design of the loon’s feathers are very geometric. I think they are beautiful.

  40. Whenever we go camping in northern Ontario one of our favourite things is to sit by the campfire at dusk and listen to the calls of the loons. We know we are out in nature then!

  41. Phew! I was immediately worried that the chick was all by himself – but reading thru the comments it seems mama was near by! What GREAT Pictures and what an opportunity!! We see them here on the lakes of NH and one thing I don’t think people realize until you see them in person is how much bigger they can be than the size of a common mallard!

    1. Hi Carol, I’m glad that you enjoyed the photos. It really was a once in a lifetime opportunity. The chick was very brave but its mother was nearby. He is all grown up now and will be starring in a post in the future. Yes,they are a large waterbird…closer in size to a small goose than a mallard.

    1. Hi Anna, Thank you for stopping by for a visit and your nice compliment. I’m glad that you enjoyed the post and photos. You do have loons in the UK, they are called divers there. They are a very beautiful waterbird.
