It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas. There is snow on the ground, the wreaths are hung and candles are in all the windows. The trees are trimmed, the house is decorated and the Christmas cookies have been baked. I thought it would be the perfect time to give you a little house tour.
We don’t use the original front door of our 1730’s home, as it is exposed to all the elements, but enter our home by way of the front porch we added to the newer addition. Dust the snow off your boots and come inside out of the cold. Let’s go into the old hall and hang your coat and hat on a hook and head into the kitchen. Since we don’t use the old front door, I like to place some Christmas decorations in front of the old entry door.

I’ll make us some hot chocolate and we can have some cake and cookies in the parlor but not too much since I want you to stay for dinner.
I just finished baking, you can probably still smell the gingerbread cookies. I love the way the cookies fill the kitchen with their spicy sweet aroma.
I have some of the cookies that I decorated drying in the dining room or we could have had dinner in here. Did you happen to notice that the painted murals depict some of the historic buildings in town that you passed on your way here? I love the way the carolers gathered around the little feather christmas tree seem to fit right in with the painting.
Now let’s go into the parlor and enjoy some sweets, then I will show you the more modern part of our home. We will walk back through the kitchen and pass the original keeping room hearth with its beehive oven. Can you imagine doing all your cooking in this historic hearth? We have a collection of the cooking utensils that would have been used by the early owners of our home such as the tin meat roaster and kettles.
Did I mention that the set kettle on the far right is very rare and it is where water was heated for cooking and washing in the 1730’s. Cookie, a reproduction doll has her legs dangling inside the kettle. You may have noticed that she was the inspiration for my gingerbread men cookies. Do you see her own little gingerbread man cookie cutter? Now let’s head into the main foyer where you entered our home from the front porch.
The addition to the original house was started thirty years ago but was never finished. When we bought our home and had it restored, we added the front porch and finished the addition. We now have a family room, den/library and bath downstairs and our master bedroom is upstairs.
If I’m not in our kitchen, you will usually find me in our family room. I have a small tree decorated in sparkly burgundy and gold, a wreath hung above an antique washstand used as a cordial bar, and beautiful Christmas stockings made from recycled antique fabrics and decorations. One step up from the family room and you are in our den. This is a lovely room where I like to sit and read during the winter as it has sun most of the day. As you may have noticed by now, I have at least one Christmas tree in each of the rooms on the main floor of our home along with a collection of Santas and snowmen. I believe after visiting my home, you now know how much I enjoy the Christmas season.
It really is beginning to look a lot like Christmas in New Hampshire especially now that our home has been decorated for the season and there is snow on the ground. I have had many requests from readers who wanted to see the inside of our 1730’s house and I hope you have enjoyed the little tour and the way I decorate our home during my favorite season of the year.

Hi Marigene, I’m happy that you enjoyed the tour of our home. We had murals painted on each wall in the dining room by an artist from Maine in the style of Rufus Porter. He had painted murals in many of the homes in New England in the early 1800’s. The gingerbread cookies were fun to decorate and were very popular at our Christmas open house yesterday. I’d love to cook over your hearth and in the oven – probably just once. I bet the oven is very good at keeping its temperature, though I don’t suppose you can adjust it much!
Hi Mad Dog, Yes it certainly does look like Christmas at our home…especially with all the snow and more on the way. I would like to have someone who is experienced with cooking in a beehive oven to show me how it is done. It think it would make me very thankful that I have two ovens in my modern range. There is a small adjustable opening in the cast-iron door to adjust the way the fire burns but that is about it.
I don’t doubt it, but I bet it makes good bread 🙂
I’m sure that if I got to know how much wood would be required, how long the coals lasted, etc. that I could bake great bread. I know that the women that used this oven over the centuries before were master bakers and made wonderful bread. I think their livelihood depended on how they used this hearth. If only they had left their recipes and techniques behind somewhere in our home. 🙂

Our kitchen is in the historical part (keeping room) of our home. The hearth, floors and ceiling are all original. Your home is beautiful Karen. I realize now that we have a lot in common. My husband grew up in the northeast and his first childhood home was over 200 years old with fireplaces like yours, actually the house had a working fireplace in every room. I’ve always wanted an old home such as yours and we actually came very close when we lived in Pennsylvania and found one on a stream that had never been restored or messed up too much with renovations. Luck was not on our side and my husband’s new job moved us away from the area before we had a change to buy it. Often we talk about that home that got away. We inherited some very nice early American antiques from his mother and love Colonial architecture, so much so that I have a pin board devoted to early American homes, where I’ve just pinned yours. Thank you so much for the tour of your home and the gingerbread. It doesn’t seem much like Christmas down here in sunny Florida with summer like temperatures and bright bouganvilla and wildly colored crotons blooming everywhere. As much as I said I don’t ever want to be cold again or deal with snow, seeing yours brightened my day.

Hi Raymund, Knowing that our winters can be long a grey, I chose colors that would be typical of the era but in warm tones when decorating our home. I’m glad you like it…thank you.
How lovely to be invited to your gorgeous heritage home, particularly this festive time of year. Your décor is beautiful Karen, respecting the era if the home but just contemporary enough to be comfortable. I have a real tree in our living room which I decorate in white, silver and gold and I have one in our family room which I have decorated in more traditional colours using ornaments from my childhood and even some from my dear Mother’s childhood in Hungary.
Your gingerbread are adorable too, I have yet to decorate the beautiful snowflakes as place cards for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day dinners.
It’ll be warming up a little by the end of the week, but I hope it won’t melt the snow, it would be so lovely to have a white Christmas, we haven’t had one in so long!

Your house is so warm and cozy. I feel like I am in Mrs. Claus’ home. Gingerbread men on the counter and all kinds of goodies. You have the most awesome over the tops kitchen. I would never want to leave it!
I’m glad you enjoyed the post, Bobbie. I bet Mrs. Claus does have a cozy home with lots of cookies too. 🙂 I do love our kitchen, it is so easy to work in…especially the baker’s cabinet with its lowered height for working with pastry and dough.
I know its officially Christmas when I see your house covered in snow and the beautiful decorations everywhere.
I’m glad that my post made you feel like the Christmas season is here. We have even more snow now so we will definitely have a white Christmas here in New Hampshire.
It’s an amazing home and so wonderful that you can continue to enjoy it and keep the history alive. I don’t think I’d ever want to leave! And now I’m heading back to your kitchen to see if you’re serving up breakfast this morning 😉
Hi Tanya, I think about you often as you do each of your remodels. I wish you could have seen what our house was like when we purchased it. I know all our friends thought we were crazy. I do love the history of our home, knowing that it has only been owned by five families since the 1700’s. I think they would approve of what we have done to preserve it.
Maybe one day we’ll get to do a house like that! I once lived in a small village in the south of England and in a tiny house which must have been a worker’s cottage. There was a “Fire badge” on the door which meant that the family was entitled to help from the Fire brigade (of sorts) and it was dated 1743…I loved that little house!
The old homes have so much character to them. 🙂

I LOVED THIS SOOOO MUCH !! And I’m so very jealous of your wonderful fireplace. I used to be a costumed docent at Storrowton Village in West Springfield, MA – and I fell in love with the bread oven and the fireplaces with the crane arms. I would love to have had one in my own home. And I’m so glad you explained about the ‘water heater’ because I had never, ever seen that before.

Karen, you have an exceptionally beautiful home. I say home because you have obviously made it that by your little touches. I love your set kettle it brought back memories of our old set pot or copper. We had to remove ours but kept it in the attic. The first picture of the outside of the house with the snow makes it just picture perfect. Happy Christmas.

I like your idea about a night shot of our home but I have never done it. I used to have two spotlights that shown on the front of our home at night and it was lovely. Hi Karen, I have to laugh…it was persistence in wanting to comment that had me bound and determined to overcome the obstacles of using Google+. If it was as hard to start my blog as it has been trying to comment…Back Road Journal might not exist. But two people with the same name that both lived in Texas and have a love of food, I had to persist. Google+ can’t keep two friendly bloggers apart forever. 🙂

Wow, you have already had your first snow … we had a day = 14 days ago .. after that it has only been wet and grey everyday. You have really got Christmas in your heart just now. Your home is so warm and inviting, truly stunning – Gingerbread cookies is what we eat most during Christmas .. and I eat them the whole year around. Karen, somebody has said we should keep our Christmas heart open for the whole year, and I think that is a fantastic idea. Because our heart are truly feeling the best at Christmas. Hi Viveka, In two snowstorms, we have gotten 16 inches of snow. It has warm up some and we are suppose to get rain tomorrow and freezing rain on Sunday. When you last visited the Alps the situation was looking good but after two months of nice weather the snow gently melted away. It’s true that in the Italian part the weather is warmer but the situation is a bit like this all over (Switzerland at least). Maybe you should come back and bring us some snow? 😉

Karen, your house is so beautiful. So utterly beautiful. You are so fortunate, you know? I went to a house on Friday night where my girlfriend and another woman played a lovely Christmas piano duet on a Grand Piano and we ate grape-leaf stuffed dolpas and an exquisite salmon dip and rich chocolate cake in this marvelous house–which looked like yours–and I temporarily wanted to live in this alternative life. I sometimes want to be everyone I meet. Until I remember it’s OK living only one life in a lifetime and enjoying everyone else’s unique situation.

Everythings just beautiful. I can tell you put a lot of thought and care into decorating your home for Christmas! The ladder back chairs around your table remind me of the ones I grew up with. My parents purchased them in New England and my mom painted them (she changed the color a few times over the years). Oh, I wished we could’ve had a white Christmas this year!

Your house is SOOO BEAUTIFUL. i just gasped when i saw it. I am in the midst of a kitchen reno and you have summed up my dreams for seasonal entertaining. I want it to be finished right this second so I can make some gingerbread men that cute!!! You have such an eye for design in everything you do!

What a beautiful home ! I love the candles in the kitchen and the Christmas decor makes everything looks so festive.
