It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas

It’s  Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas. There is snow on the ground, the wreaths are hung and candles are in all the windows. The trees are trimmed, the house is decorated and the Christmas cookies have been baked. I thought it would be the perfect time to give you a little house tour.

It Will Definitely Be A White Christmas This Year
It Will Definitely Be A White Christmas This Year With Snow On The Ground And More Coming

We don’t use the original front door of our 1730’s home, as it is exposed to all the elements, but enter our home by way of the front porch we added to the newer addition. Dust the snow off your boots and come inside out of the cold. Let’s go into the old hall and hang your coat and hat on a hook and head into the kitchen. Since we don’t use the old front door, I like to place some Christmas decorations in front of the old entry door.

Click on any photo in the galleries to see a slide show.

I’ll make us some hot chocolate and we can have some cake and cookies in the parlor but not too much since I want you to stay for dinner.

I Just Finished Baking Cookies, Can You Smell The Gingerbread Men
I Just Finished Baking, Can You Smell The Gingerbread Cookies

I just finished baking, you can probably still smell the gingerbread cookies. I love the way the cookies fill the kitchen with their spicy sweet aroma.

I have some of the cookies that I decorated drying in the dining room or we could have had dinner in here. Did you happen to notice that the painted murals depict some of the historic buildings in town that you passed on your way here? I love the way the carolers gathered around the little feather christmas tree seem to fit right in with the painting.

Now let’s go into the parlor and enjoy some sweets, then I will show you the more modern part of our home. We will walk back through the kitchen and pass the original keeping room hearth with its beehive oven. Can you imagine doing all your cooking in this historic hearth? We have a collection of the cooking utensils that would have been used by the early owners of our home such as the tin meat roaster and kettles.

Did I mention that the set kettle on the far right is very rare and it is where water was heated for cooking and washing in the 1730’s. Cookie, a reproduction doll has her legs dangling inside the kettle. You may have noticed that she was the inspiration for my gingerbread men cookies. Do you see her own little gingerbread man cookie cutter? Now let’s head into the main foyer where you entered our home from the front porch.

The addition to the original house was started thirty years ago but was never finished. When we bought our home and had it restored, we added the front porch and finished the addition. We now have a family room, den/library and bath downstairs and our master bedroom is upstairs.

If I’m not in our kitchen, you will usually find me in our family room. I have a small tree decorated in sparkly burgundy and gold, a wreath hung above an antique washstand used as a cordial bar, and beautiful Christmas stockings made from recycled antique fabrics and decorations. One step up from the family room  and you are in our den. This is a lovely room where I like to sit and read during the winter as it has sun most of the day. As you may have noticed by now, I have at least one Christmas tree in each of the rooms on the main floor of our home along with a collection of Santas and snowmen. I believe after visiting my home, you now know how much I enjoy the Christmas season.

It really is beginning to look a lot like Christmas in New Hampshire especially now that our home has been decorated for the season and there is snow on the ground.  I have had many requests from readers who wanted to see the inside of our 1730’s house and I hope you have enjoyed the little tour and the way I decorate our home during my favorite season of the year.

    1. Hi Ruth, I love the way gingerbread fills the kitchen with such a wonderful aroma. I’m happy that you enjoyed the little tour, thank you for your nice comment.

    1. Hi Angie, I think the hearth is one of the most interesting things about our home. I’m happy that you enjoyed the tour…thank you for your nice compliment.

    1. Hi Judy, I know we love having a white Christmas here in New Hampshire…we are certainly going to have one this year. Thank you for your compliment and wish, I hope your holidays are nice as well.

  1. Yes it is beginning to look a lot like Christmas, had about 8 inches of snow already. Thanks for the tour and the sweets. Enjoyed both very much. It must be a tremendous responsibility to maintain a historic house. Did you make cookie the doll?

    1. Hi Norma, Yes there is no doubt it is going to be a white Christmas…10 inches of snow and another 6 tomorrow. I’m glad you enjoyed the post, thank you. No I didn’t make the doll but bought her from a woman that specializes in making dolls from the era of our home. Cookie was too cute not to come live in my kitchen. 🙂

  2. So sweet, so cozy, so Christmas! Wish I was your neighbor! 😉
PS tried your recipe for snowflake cookies. stacked them before icing set so not so pretty, yet they taste great! Hope gifted pals understand! 😉

    1. Hi Diane, I’m happy you made the snowflake cookies but sorry to hear about stacking them before the icing was totally set. My dining room table was covered with trays of cookies while they were drying. I know your friends will enjoy your cookies. 🙂 Thank you for your nice compliment about our home…wish you were a neighbor too.

    1. Thank you Karen for your lovely compliment. Everyone seems to enjoy our kitchen. We had our annual open house Christmas party yesterday and every single person stayed in the kitchen all day. 🙂 Thanks for your wish, I hope you have a wonderful Christmas as well.

  3. It was a wonderful visit for me 🙂 I love and loved your decorations, but last year I loved too. You are amazing. The snow really adds a fairy tales touches to your house… Thank you dear Karen, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, love, nia

    1. Thank you for your kind words, Nia…they are very much appreciated. I’m happy that you enjoyed seeing our home decorated for Christmas. I hope you enjoy the holidays as well. I also wanted to thank you for reblogging the post. 🙂

  4. Hi Karen!

Oh how festive all your decorations are! Looks like you may have gotten just a tiny bit more snow than us. I love when it snows for Christmas. I’m just hoping it doesn’t melt before, lol…I couldn’t possibly pick a favorite decoration. Although, those Santas are too precious!

Thank you so much for sharing…

    1. Hi Louise, We ended up with 10 inches of snow and are supposed to get about 6 more inches tomorrow. I think a lot of us are going to have a white Christmas this year. 🙂 I’m happy to know that you enjoyed the post and decorations…thank you for your nice compliment.

  5. Karen, thank you for the tour of your beautiful home…I love the mural…did you paint it? The outside with the snow is a picture perfect postcard. Cute gingerbread cookies!
Merry Christmas to you and yours.

    1. Hi Marigene, I’m happy that you enjoyed the tour of our home. We had murals painted on each wall in the dining room by an artist from Maine in the style of Rufus Porter. He had painted murals in many of the homes in New England in the early 1800’s. The gingerbread cookies were fun to decorate and were very popular at our Christmas open house yesterday. I hope you have a wonderful Christmas as well.

  6. I hope it’s o.k. for me to bring my dear DIL on our visit (as soon as she wakes up). She and our son are here from Providence, RI for a week’s visit. Yesterday, E. received her PhD from Purdue and we are having a lovely celebration. I’m sure she’ll love your home as much as I do. Keep the coffee ready!

    Best,
    Bonnie

    1. Hi Andy, Thank you for your visit and you nice compliment. My husband and I think the hearth is one of the nicest features of our home. I look forward to your return.

    1. Hi Jeannee, I’m so happy that you took time to stop by for a visit. I’m glad that you enjoyed seeing our home decorated for Christmas. I hope you have a wonderful Christmas as well. Take care and I look forward to when you start blogging again. 🙂

  7. It’s definitely looking like Christmas where you are 😉
I’d love to cook over your hearth and in the oven – probably just once. I bet the oven is very good at keeping its temperature, though I don’t suppose you can adjust it much!

    1. Hi Mad Dog, Yes it certainly does look like Christmas at our home…especially with all the snow and more on the way. I would like to have someone who is experienced with cooking in a beehive oven to show me how it is done. It think it would make me very thankful that I have two ovens in my modern range. There is a small adjustable opening in the cast-iron door to adjust the way the fire burns but that is about it.

      1. I’m sure that if I got to know how much wood would be required, how long the coals lasted, etc. that I could bake great bread. I know that the women that used this oven over the centuries before were master bakers and made wonderful bread. I think their livelihood depended on how they used this hearth. If only they had left their recipes and techniques behind somewhere in our home. 🙂

  8. Karen, thank you for inviting us into your beautiful home. You have created a warm and inviting place for us, and yes, I can smell the gingerbread cookies as I made ginger cookies recently myself. Enjoy your white Christmas gathered around your hearth. Merry Christmas to you and yours!

    1. Thank you Judy, I’m happy that you enjoyed the little tour of our home. Don’t you just love the smell of gingerbread baking in the kitchen. 🙂 I appreciate you lovely wish and hope you have a wonderful Christmas as well.

  9. Hi Karen, thank you for inviting me into your home. It is so warm, cozy and welcoming. You and your husband have done a wonderful job restoring the home to all it’s glory. And at this time of year it is truly magical. Merry Christmas!!!

    1. Thank you David, for your kind words. I’m glad you enjoyed the tour of our historic home. Hopefully our restoration will keep our home around for another hundred years. Thank you for your Christmas wish, I hope you have a wonderful one as well.

    1. Hi Grace, I’m happy that you enjoyed seeing our home decorated for Christmas. I do enjoy decorating our home for this festive time of the year. I do think the gingerbread men turned out cute. Thank you for your nice compliment.

  10. We were up in Hillsboro yesterday (Sunday)–the snow was so beautiful! And there are a number of wonderful historic homes that I wished I could have peeked into. Thanks for giving me a glimpse of your beautiful home. I love what you’ve done with it. (Just curious–is the kitchen in the old or new part. It looks so wonderfully light and conveniently “modern,” but the floors and ceiling height make it appear old).

    1. Hi Tracy, I agree with you about how beautiful the snow is. We got 10 inches but thank goodness it stopped just in time for our open house. Our kitchen is in the historical part (keeping room) of our home. The hearth, floors and ceiling are all original. I designed the kitchen so that all the modern appliances would be hidden except the stove. I’m glad you enjoyed the tour and thank you for your lovely compliment.

      1. Brilliant design!! You did that? Because my husband has designed and remodeled a zillion homes, I paid close attention to the floor plan and the historical elements… yours is impressively well-done! Let me ask again… You did that? And that’s not your full-time profession? Wow!

      2. Yes…I designed my kitchen. I’m very flattered that you like what I’ve done in our kitchen, especially since your husband is a professional. When we lived in Florida, I designed the home we built in Key Largo. If I had to live my life over again, I would liked to have been either an architect or a travel writer. Now, I have a happy life writing a blog with wonderful readers like yourself. Thank you so much for your lovely compliment. 🙂

  11. I love your farmhouse so much (not that I haven’t told you that before 😉 ). The yellow color pops so beautifully against the white snow! I wish I could move in. And your gingerbread cookies are too adorable.

    1. Thank you Amy, I do know you love our house and appreciate your lovely compliment. I love the yellow color too…it does look especially pretty against the snow and brightens a grey, snowy day like we are having today. 🙂

  12. Oh, I just love your house tour!! It’s so welcoming and warm! I felt like I was right there with you! Happy Holidays Karen! any guest invited to your home is a lucky one for sure!!

    1. Hi Linda, I’m glad that you enjoyed the house tour…wish it could have been in person. Thank you for your nice compliment and wish. I hope you have a wonderful Christmas…I know you will enjoy spending it back in Florida.

  13. Thank you for the tour of your gorgeous home; your decorations are equally beautiful! Your Christmas spirit is almost enough soften the black and cold heart of a curmudgeon like myself!

    1. Hi Peter, I’m happy that you enjoyed the tour of our home…thank you. I hope that my Christmas spirit will rub off a little and that you decorate even if it is just one tiny corner of your lovely home. And I would never call you a curmudgeon. 🙂

  14. Your house is a real “home” too … it is in keeping with its era, it is styled with style (excuse the pun) as well as being cosy and reflects the warmth, intelligence and joie de vivre of its owners. What a truly lovely house. Merry Christmas!!!

    1. Thank you for your kind words, Jo…I really appreciate your lovely compliment. I’m glad you enjoyed the tour. I hope all is well with you and hope that you have a wonderful Christmas, as well.

  15. Your home is beautiful Karen. I realize now that we have a lot in common. My husband grew up in the northeast and his first childhood home was over 200 years old with fireplaces like yours, actually the house had a working fireplace in every room. I’ve always wanted an old home such as yours and we actually came very close when we lived in Pennsylvania and found one on a stream that had never been restored or messed up too much with renovations. Luck was not on our side and my husband’s new job moved us away from the area before we had a change to buy it. Often we talk about that home that got away. We inherited some very nice early American antiques from his mother and love Colonial architecture, so much so that I have a pin board devoted to early American homes, where I’ve just pinned yours. Thank you so much for the tour of your home and the gingerbread. It doesn’t seem much like Christmas down here in sunny Florida with summer like temperatures and bright bouganvilla and wildly colored crotons blooming everywhere. As much as I said I don’t ever want to be cold again or deal with snow, seeing yours brightened my day.
    Sam

    1. Hi Sam, I’m glad that you enjoyed the tour of our home. We really do have so much in common from where we have lived, our love of colonial architecture and even what we enjoy cooking. 🙂 From all my years of living in Florida, I know what you mean about it not feeling like Christmas when you have summer like temperatures. Now come February when we head to Florida, I know I will enjoy the warmth.

  16. We have snow on the ground here in St. Louis, too — a bit unusual for this time of the year. Going to be up in the 50s later this week, though, so I doubt if it’ll last. Anyway, I always enjoy seeing your house! What a pleasure it must be to live there. You decorate so well, too. Fun post — thanks.

    1. Hi John, I’m glad you enjoyed the post…thank you for your nice compliment. We do enjoy our home, especially during this festive time of the year…it is perfect for holiday parties.

  17. I can definitely see that your home is beautiful year-round, Karen, but at Christmas it is really exceptionally inviting. I can definitely smell those gingerbread cookies, but what I really want to sample is the fruit and nut cake! That has my name written all over it! 🙂 I’m certain you create a warm and hospitable environment for all friends and family, visitors who come to appreciate the hard work it takes to maintain such a lovely and gracious home. I adore the historical pieces! ox

    1. Thank you for your lovely compliment, Debra. I do love when our home is decorated for the Christmas holidays…it seems to glow with extra warmth. Out of all the things I bake during the holidays, the fruit and nut cake is my favorite.

  18. I just love getting glimpses of other people’s homes – from outside yours looks like a picture book house with the snow and the wreaths. Beautiful!

    1. Hi Kiki, I’m glad that you enjoyed the little tour of our historic home. With the wreaths up and snow on the ground, it reminds me of a Currier and Ives print. Thank you for your nice compliment.

  19. Your home looks so festive a welcoming for the holidays! You have done a wonderful job of decorating to match the character of your historic home..
Here’s wishing your and yours a very Happy Holiday!

    1. Thank you Peggy for your lovely compliment. We have tried to embrace the history of our home and enjoy living here very much. Thank you for your wish, I hope you enjoy the holidays as well.

  20. Oh my! I am simply bowled over-what a glorious home. The outside color is gorgeous. And your interiors are so warm and inviting. I can smell the cookies now! Thank you for letting us in for a peek. It must be an absolute joy to live there. Merry Christmas to you!

    1. Thank you Adri, for your lovely compliment. We thought our home was special enough to save and love living here. I’m happy to know that you enjoyed the tour. I hope you have a wonderful Christmas and thank you for your wish.

    1. Thank you Sheila, for your complement…I’m glad that you enjoyed seeing our home. I appreciate your wish and hope you have a wonderful Christmas as well.

    1. Hi Victoria, I smiled when you asked to see our home decorated this Christmas when you commented on my last post. I’m happy to know that you enjoyed seeing this little tour. I hope you have a wonderful Christmas and thank you for your wish.

    1. Hi Diane, I appreciate your lovely compliment. I hope we have saved our home for another hundred years at least…we think it is special. The way the snow has been falling…I think I’m going to be snuggling for a long time. 🙂

  21. You have a beautiful home and decorated for the holidays it really puts you in the Christmas spirit. I’d love to be one of your neighbours as well though I’d be forced to compare my own poor decorating efforts unfavourably. 🙂 Thank you for the lovely tour.

    1. Hi Boleyn, I appreciate your lovely compliment. I would love to have you for a neighbor…I could help you decorate and you could share some of your good recipes. 🙂

    1. Thank you Southern, for your nice compliment. I’m happy to know that you enjoyed the little tour. At the end of winter, I’m not so fond of snow but it is wonderful to have a white Christmas. 🙂 BTW, I’m happy that you like the snowman…he always makes me smile.

    1. Thank you Jan, I’m happy that you enjoyed the tour of our home. It seems that everyone likes the gingerbread men. They did turn out cute and were very popular at our open house.

  22. Karen, what a treat to see inside your home. I don’t think I asked but I’ve been so eager for a peek inside. It’s absolutely gorgeous. All your hard work has produced a beautiful Christmas haven in the snow.

    1. Hi Maureen, I have had some requests to see the inside of our home. I think it looks nice decorated for Christmas so I was very happy to do this post. Thank you for your lovely compliment…I’m so glad that you enjoyed the tour. 🙂

  23. Karen, you have such a beautiful home. I love the first shot showing all the wreaths in the windows – so pretty. And your cookie decorating skills are excellent – that snowman is so cute! And I love how you decorate every inch of your home – it certainly is beginning to look a lot like Christmas! xx

    1. Thank you Charlie, for your nice compliment. I’m glad you like the wreaths over the windows…it was a typical decoration for a New England Christmas in years past. I’m happy to know that you like the snowmen…they took more time than I should have spent on them but the guests at our open house loved them.

  24. Love your house and thank you for letting me peep inside. Each room is so charming and your decorations are perfect for the period of the house and so fitting to have snow for a wonderful festive time. It’s so mild here at the moment so I’m finding it hard to get into the Christmas festivities. I’ll have to make some of your gingerbread biscuits, the smell might help.

    1. Thank you Barbara, for your lovely compliment…I’m glad you liked the little tour. Our home is unique because of its age and we have tried to respect its history. I hope that your weather turns a little cooler so that it inspires you with the spirit of Christmas. The aroma of gingerbread is hard to resist and should do the trick even if the weather doesn’t cooperate. I know your home will be lovingly decorated. 🙂

    1. Hi Pamela, I’m glad that you enjoyed the tour of our house decorated at Christmas. I do love our kitchen…it is very easy to work in. All our guests enjoy being in there as well, either for a casual dinner or a party. Thank you for your nice compliment.

    1. Hi Cathy, I’m happy to know you enjoyed the little tour of our home. I think the cake is as good as it looks…I make it every year for Christmas.

  25. Oh Karen, how gorgeous! Your Christmas really is a picture postcard (or Christmas card) event! Meanwhile, here in Australia we will have sunshine (most likely) and warmth. Happy cooking to you and yours, and season’s eatings xox

    1. Thank you Lizzy, for your nice compliment and wish. We used to live in Florida so I can imagine your warm Australian Christmas. We got 6 more inches of snow. If the sun comes out, I’ll take some photos for this year’s Christmas card. 🙂

    1. Hi Sarah, I’m glad that you enjoyed seeing a little of our home. The wreaths in the windows is a New England tradition but I don’t see it being done as much as I used to.

    1. Hi Raymund, Knowing that our winters can be long a grey, I chose colors that would be typical of the era but in warm tones when decorating our home. I’m glad you like it…thank you.

  26. How lovely to be invited to your gorgeous heritage home, particularly this festive time of year. Your décor is beautiful Karen, respecting the era if the home but just contemporary enough to be comfortable. I have a real tree in our living room which I decorate in white, silver and gold and I have one in our family room which I have decorated in more traditional colours using ornaments from my childhood and even some from my dear Mother’s childhood in Hungary.
Your gingerbread are adorable too, I have yet to decorate the beautiful snowflakes as place cards for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day dinners.
It’ll be warming up a little by the end of the week, but I hope it won’t melt the snow, it would be so lovely to have a white Christmas, we haven’t had one in so long!

    1. Thank you for your kind words, Eva. We wanted to be true to the history of our home but we didn’t want to feel like we were living in a museum. I’m glad that you like how I’ve decorated. It is fun to have a couple of trees, yours sound lovely. I hope you get the white Christmas you are wishing for. It is suppose to warm up here as well but there is no chance that all the snow we have on the ground will melt. We have had a total of 17 inches of snow from the two storms in the past three days.

    1. Hi Larry, I’m glad you like the photo of the house with the snow. I was just out taking some more photos…we’ve had a lot more snow. I’m sure our kitchens looked similar while baking but it is so much fun enjoying the results. 🙂

  27. I so remember my visit to your beautiful home last Christmas. Thanks you for allowing us to wonder around again: actually the only familiar photo was of the mural – so much beautiful detail of a NH Yule . . . oh, the cake tasted lovely . . . . hope we may come again next festive season . . . and, methinks, my favourite corner would be your den . . . so comfortable to sit with a book and a cup of tea 🙂 !

    1. Hi Eha, I had a lot of requests to see more of our home so I’m glad you enjoyed this year’s visit. Of course, you will always be welcome to my little tours. The den is very enjoyable in the winter because of the nice sunshine that comes through the windows.

  28. Fabulous! And that set kettle – so clever for its time. I don’t think I’ve ever seen one before. Ah, to have a chat, a slice of that delicious looking fruit and nut cake and a very strong black coffee would be just wonderful. Come to think of it, I still haven’t made my fruit and nut cake yet. Must get on to it!

    1. Thank you for your lovely compliment, Johnny. I’m happy to know that you enjoyed the tour. The set kettle is indeed an interesting piece of history in our home and considered rare…most of them were removed over the years. Wish I could serve you a slice of cake, I do think you would enjoy it. 🙂

  29. Thanks so much for visiting my blog. Your house is amazing! Love east coast houses. Everything here in the Bay Area where I live, isn’t as old. My dad just bought a beautiful victorian era home in Pennsylvania, and I can’t wait to see it.
Happy holidays and thanks for letting us peek into your lovely home.

    1. Hi Elizabeth, I’m happy that you stopped by for a visit. The architecture is definitely different on each coast of our country…I’m glad that you enjoyed seeing our historic home. Thank you for your compliment. I’m sure your father’s victorian home is lovely and I know you must be looking forward to seeing it.

  30. Your house is so warm and cozy. I feel like I am in Mrs. Claus’ home. Gingerbread men on the counter and all kinds of goodies. You have the most awesome over the tops kitchen. I would never want to leave it!

    1. I’m glad you enjoyed the post, Bobbie. I bet Mrs. Claus does have a cozy home with lots of cookies too. 🙂 I do love our kitchen, it is so easy to work in…especially the baker’s cabinet with its lowered height for working with pastry and dough.

    1. I’m glad that my post made you feel like the Christmas season is here. We have even more snow now so we will definitely have a white Christmas here in New Hampshire.

  31. It’s an amazing home and so wonderful that you can continue to enjoy it and keep the history alive. I don’t think I’d ever want to leave! And now I’m heading back to your kitchen to see if you’re serving up breakfast this morning 😉

    1. Hi Tanya, I think about you often as you do each of your remodels. I wish you could have seen what our house was like when we purchased it. I know all our friends thought we were crazy. I do love the history of our home, knowing that it has only been owned by five families since the 1700’s. I think they would approve of what we have done to preserve it.

      1. Maybe one day we’ll get to do a house like that! I once lived in a small village in the south of England and in a tiny house which must have been a worker’s cottage. There was a “Fire badge” on the door which meant that the family was entitled to help from the Fire brigade (of sorts) and it was dated 1743…I loved that little house!

  32. What a fabulous house you have! You have reason to be proud. And those decorations are simply beautiful. I only wish I could come and join you to share your cookies and cake. They too look delicious! Thanks for sharing.

    1. Thank you for your lovely compliment, Fatima. I’m happy that you enjoyed the tour of our home. I wish I could share some of the cookies and cake with you. Too bad there is a large ocean between us. 🙂

  33. I LOVED THIS SOOOO MUCH !! And I’m so very jealous of your wonderful fireplace. I used to be a costumed docent at Storrowton Village in West Springfield, MA – and I fell in love with the bread oven and the fireplaces with the crane arms. I would love to have had one in my own home. And I’m so glad you explained about the ‘water heater’ because I had never, ever seen that before.
You’re home is so warm and inviting Karen. It’s beautifully decorated and lovely – esp. at this time of year! Thank you for sharing photos of you home with all of us!!!

    1. Hi Cecile, I’m happy to know that you enjoyed the post and photos of our home. I think our hearth with its beehive oven and set kettle is a very special part of our historic home…I glad you appreciate its significance because of your docent background. Thank you for your lovely compliment.

  34. Well, I certainly enjoyed your “Christmas Open House” today! What fun to have the old and new combined in your home. Lovely! And of course, the kitchen is always the “place to be” in any home, right? LOL!

    1. Hi Susan, I’m happy to know that your enjoyed visiting while I was getting ready for my Christmas open house. I’m glad you like the way we have preserved the history of our home while still having all the conveniences of a modern home. Oh yes, the kitchen is always where all our friends want to gather. Thank you for your nice compliment.

  35. This New Hampshire place of yours is always a feast for the eyes and your holiday accessories are just perfect for it. Knowing you, I’m sure it is filled with warmth and joy.

    1. Thank you Linda, for your compliment. I’m glad that you like our New Hampshire home…it is very different from our little Maine summer cottage. Maybe one of these days we can get together in New Hampshire. 🙂

  36. Karen, you have an exceptionally beautiful home. I say home because you have obviously made it that by your little touches. I love your set kettle it brought back memories of our old set pot or copper. We had to remove ours but kept it in the attic. The first picture of the outside of the house with the snow makes it just picture perfect. Happy Christmas.

    1. Thank you Maria, for your kind words…they are very much appreciated. I’m so happy to know that this post brought back nice memories. It is nice to know of someone who is familiar with a set kettle or pot. I’m happy that yours has been saved even if it is in the attic…they are very rare. I’m glad you liked the post and hope you will have a wonderful Christmas as well.

    1. Thank you so much Elizabeth, for your lovely compliment. I really appreciate your kind words and love that you enjoy how we have chosen the decor for of our home. 🙂 I hope your holidays are wonderful as well.

  37. Ohhh, I absolutely LOVE your house!!! That top picture especially had me almost teary with delight. 🙂 You’ve created such a beautiful and cozy home and I love all the festive touches. 🙂

    1. Hi Krista, I’m happy to know that you enjoyed the photos of our home. We usually have a white Christmas here in New Hampshire. Our home always reminds me of the Currier and Ives prints that were so typical of New England at Christmas time. Thank you for your sweet compliment.

  38. What a lovely tour of your beautiful home Karen! I love the cookies, too! Decorating cookies so prettily is something I’d love to do (but have never managed!). Merry Christmas to you and your husband! Dana

    1. Thank you Dana, for your lovely compliment…I’m glad you enjoyed the tour. Knowing how talented you are with your wreaths and wands that you make with items from your garden, I know that you would do very well making Christmas cookies if you had the time. 🙂

  39. Wow. No wonder you’re staying in New Hampshire for Christmas. Your decorations are really lovely. I prefer natural materials, so I loved all the dried things hanging by you old hearth–and that set kettle is unique. Gorgeous kitchen, too. A Merry Christmas is assured with cooking facilities like that! Thanks for the tour, Karen.

    1. Hi Faith, I appreciate your nice compliment and wish. New Hampshire is a wonderful place to experience Christmas…as we usually have a white one. I’m happy that you enjoyed the post, photos and how I decorate our home for Christmas. Yes, I like to dry flowers and herbs to hang in my kitchen. 🙂 I hope you will have a wonderful Christmas as well.

  40. Karen, your home is simply lovely! I love how you’ve decorated it for everyday living and for the holidays! Merry Christmas! And yes, I can smell those cookies! 😉

    1. Hi Mary, I appreciate your lovely compliment. My husband and I wanted to restore the wonderful history of our home but we didn’t want to feel we were living in a museum. I think we have preserved the history but have a very livable home. I hope you have a wonderful Christmas as well.

    1. Thank you B, I’m happy to know that you enjoyed the post and photos. It definitely looks like Christmas, as we now have over 16 inches of snow on the ground. I hope you will have a wonderful Christmas as well.

  41. What a beautiful home, and such gorgeous treats! I almost wish I still lived in New England so I could drop by for some sweets and a cup of cocoa… Very Christmas-y post, Karen – gets us all in the mood!

    1. Thank you David, for your lovely compliment. I wish you still lived in New England as well. Oh the dinner parties we could share. 🙂 I’m happy to know that my post is inspiring the Christmas spirit in my readers.

    1. Hi Lindy, I’m glad to know that you enjoyed the tour. I agree with you about our kitchen…it is a pleasure working in it. Thank you for your nice compliment.

  42. Oh Karen, it’s definitely beginning to look a lot like Christmas! Wow! I feel inspired now to make it look like Christmas in my home. Or we could just trade homes… 🙂

    1. Thank you Lidia, for your nice compliment. I’m glad you found the little tour inspiring but Knowing you and all you have been creating, I’m sure it looks very much like Christmas in your home. 🙂

  43. Karen, I really feel like I was at your open house! Your house reminds me so much of one I watched be refurbished on This Old House (I know, I’ve said that before) but it’s just so beautiful and then of course you possess that Texan Hospitality that makes everyone feel at home. I have just one question: Do you have a picture of your home at night with the candles lit? I would love to see it if you do! Merry Christmas!

    1. Hi Kelli, What a sweet comment…I’m happy that you actually felt like you were at our open house party. If you were a neighbor, you know you would have gotten an invitation. I like your idea about a night shot of our home but I have never done it. I used to have two spotlights that shown on the front of our home at night and it was lovely. Unfortunately the lights always got buried in the snow. Thank you for your nice compliment and wish, I hope you have a wonderful Christmas as well.

  44. You have a wonderful & beautiful large wooden house, Karen! The outside is also beautiful! I love the darker yellow colour too! Your inside is nicely decorated for Christams,…This is also the most lovely holiday & time of the year for me & my husband.

    1. Thank you for your lovely compliment Sophie, I’m happy that you enjoyed the photos of our home. I love the warm yellow color too, especially in the winter…it is like a ray of sunshine. I’m glad that you agree with me about what a wonderful holiday season Christmas is. 🙂

    1. Hi Karen, I have to laugh…it was persistence in wanting to comment that had me bound and determined to overcome the obstacles of using Google+. If it was as hard to start my blog as it has been trying to comment…Back Road Journal might not exist. But two people with the same name that both lived in Texas and have a love of food, I had to persist. Google+ can’t keep two friendly bloggers apart forever. 🙂

    1. Thank you Jason, I’m happy to know that you like our home. I just enjoyed a slice of the cake…I make it at this time every year and love it.

  45. Thank you for the tour of your beautiful home all decked out in Christmas holiday splendor, m’lady! I want to come over and bake Christmas cookies and cakes with you. I just loved reading this post, Karen. Your prose was charming and full of warmth and friendship. Loved each and every photo. Best wishes to you and yours for a meaningful and joyous Christmas holiday! xo

    1. Hi Stacy, I would definitely appreciate your helping hand with baking any day of the year. I appreciate your kind words and wish. I hope you will have a wonderful Christmas as well.

  46. Karen you have an absolutely lovely home! I am so fond of the colonial era and primitives and all of New England in general. Is your home in the Portsmouth, NH area? It reminded me of homes I saw there in the colonial Strawberry Banke area. Your cookies looked wonderful! I will be baking my gingerbread cookies this week. They are also a tradition in our home. Merry Christmas!

    1. Thank you for your lovely compliment, Pat. We live in the seacoast region thirty miles south and west of Portsmouth. And yes, our home does look like some of the historic homes in Strawberry Banke. Gingerbread cookies are a lovely Christmas tradition…have fun baking yours. Enjoy your Christmas in Colorado…I know it will be lovely.

  47. Wow, you have already had your first snow … we had a day = 14 days ago .. after that it has only been wet and grey everyday. You have really got Christmas in your heart just now. Your home is so warm and inviting, truly stunning – Gingerbread cookies is what we eat most during Christmas .. and I eat them the whole year around. Karen, somebody has said we should keep our Christmas heart open for the whole year, and I think that is a fantastic idea. Because our heart are truly feeling the best at Christmas. Love your yellow house.

    1. Hi Viveka, In two snowstorms, we have gotten 16 inches of snow. It has warm up some and we are suppose to get rain tomorrow and freezing rain on Sunday. I agree with you that we should keep Christmas in our hearts all year. Thank you for your lovely compliment. I’m wishing you better days, my friend. 🙂

  48. Your home is beautiful and so festive for the season. I bet the cookies baking make it so too. We will probably not have the snow for Christmas due to rain. Sad, since we had so much snow. I wish you a very Merry Christmas and hope you and your family have a healthy, happy New Year.

    1. Thank you Donna for your compliment and wish. I’m happy that you enjoyed the tour. You are right, cookie baking is part of the pleasures of Christmas. I hope you have a lovely Christmas and New Year as well.

    1. Thank you Ming, for your lovely compliment, I’m glad you enjoyed the tour. I used royal icing to decorate the cookies. You can find the recipe for the cookies and icing on my previous post…Tiffany Snowflake Cookies. I hope you and your family enjoy the holidays as well, thank you.

  49. What a beautiful and cozy home. I love older homes. They have so much character. I would love an older home, but hubby not so much. So glad you stopped by my blog. I am enjoying looking around yours.

    1. Hi Kim, I agree with you about how older homes have a lot of character. We were lucky to be able to restore our home back to its original features but we have all the comforts of a modern home…they are just hidden. Thank you for your nice compliment and I look forward to your return.

    1. I appreciate your lovely compliment, Celia. While it was important to do an accurate restoration, my husband and I didn’t want our home to feel like a museum. I’m glad to know it comes across as welcoming. I hope you and your family have a wonderful holiday as well.

  50. Karen, the first photograph looks like a painting… So beautiful! I wish my kitchen looked so clean after a baking session 😉 Your house looks so festive, I have almost forgotten I haven’t got a single Christmas decoration this year! Merry Christmas!

    1. Hi Sissi, I’m glad you you enjoyed the photo…I do think our house looks pretty when it is surrounded by snow. You better get busy…Christmas is just around the corner. I hope you have a wonderful holiday. 🙂

  51. Karen, Your house is just perfect. It is the kind of house I would be very happy to be living in. I love everything about it and your kitchen is to die for. Merry Christmas from my house to yours.

    1. Thank you Penny, for your nice compliment. It is nice knowing you enjoy the style and decor of our home…we love it. Thank you for your wish, I hope you have a wonderful Christmas with your family.

  52. Very festive Karen – thank you for the brief respite from the cold wind, but now I must take my leave from your comforting kitchen and gingerbread cookies for I have a long journey back to Sweden :D.

    Merry Christmas to you!

    1. Hi Charles, I glad you got a chance to take some time away and enjoyed my little tour. I know that you are going to have a wonderful Christmas this year in Sweden with all your family. Enjoy!

    1. Thank you Allie for your kind words, I’m happy that you enjoyed the little tour of our home. I have to say I do enjoy my kitchen…it is a pleasure to work in. I hope you have a wonderful holiday as well.

    1. Hi Vicki, I’m happy to know that you enjoyed seeing our home decorated for Christmas. Thank you for your wish, I hope you have a wonderful holiday as well.

  53. What a beautiful home you have, Karen! I love how you’ve finished your renovations and really enjoyed walking through your Christmas Home Tour. I think every room is my favorite but I love your parlor with all of it’s pretty red color. Your cookies are so professional, I could almost smell that gingerbread! Your home is so lovely.. I think it’s the quintessential Christmas home!! Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones!! xx

    1. Thank you Barbara, I believe my simple decorations seem to fix the style of our home…I’m glad you enjoyed the tour. I think everyone that visits our home enjoys keeping room kitchen with its red walls. I hope you have a wonderful Christmas as well.

  54. Karen I am not sure how I missed this one? It is wonderful and just looking at your home in the snow gets me in the mood. Here in Nashville today it is 70 degrees! Weird even for us.
I have enjoyed your blog all year and look forward to keeping up with your life and cooking in 2014. A joy to know you via your blog.

    1. Thank you for your sweet comment, Teresa. I’ve enjoyed having you as a blogging friend and look forward to your visits next year. I’ll be visiting you as well to see what you will be cooking up in Nashville. 🙂 It has warmed up here some although we still have lots of snow on the ground.

  55. I just love your home Karen. It looks so warm and inviting. And your kitchen is just to die for! Gorgeous – open, bright and spacious. What a dream!!! I love how you’ve decorated for the holidays. My favorite has to be the wreathes adorning the windows outside. It looks so classically Christmas. Have a wonderful holiday and an even better New Year!

    1. Hi Kristy, I’m glad that you enjoyed the post…thank you for your lovely compliment. We went out for lunch yesterday and took a long ride. I commented that not as many of the homes are displaying wreathes over every window but I love this New England tradition. I do have to agree with you about our kitchen, I love working in it. Thank you for your lovely wish, I hope you and your sweet family have a lovely Christmas and that the New Year will be wonderful.

  56. Thanks for the tour 😉 . The whole post has such a warm and positive feeling to it. I love it. I admit I am a little jealous of the snow surrounding the house; we are still waiting for it over here in Switzerland. Anyway, my best wishes for this Christmas!

    1. Hi Fanny, I’m happy to know that you enjoyed the tour of our home during the Christmas season. I’m surprised that you are waiting for snow…we saw so much when we were in Austria and Bavaria in October. Is your home close to the lakes and that keeps your area warmer?

      1. When you last visited the Alps the situation was looking good but after two months of nice weather the snow gently melted away. It’s true that in the Italian part the weather is warmer but the situation is a bit like this all over (Switzerland at least). Maybe you should come back and bring us some snow? 😉

  57. It is always a joy to take a visit to your home, and Karen, I would love to sit and eat round your kitchen table – it’s where the heart of the home is! and the snow just sets it all off wonderfully – I probably won’t see snow until January when we head to the Alps, so in the meantime I’ll enjoy the winter beaches. Wishing you and your family a warm and happy Christmas and a wonderful New Year x

    1. Thank you Claire, for your lovely compliment. I wish we were neighbors so that I could invite you for a meal at our kitchen table. I was wondering if you were going to return for skiing in the Alps again this year…I know you love it. I hope you have a lovely Christmas and a safe and happy New Year.

  58. Absolutely gorgeous Karen!! I so wish I lived closer to enjoy those amazing sweets with you! ♥ Thank you for allowing us to visit your home!!

    1. Thank you Didi, I wish we were neighbors as well. We could collect grape leaves from vines I have growing and make stuffed grape leaves together. Thank you for your nice compliment, I’m glad that you enjoyed the tour of our home at Christmas.

  59. Karen, your house is so beautiful. So utterly beautiful. You are so fortunate, you know? I went to a house on Friday night where my girlfriend and another woman played a lovely Christmas piano duet on a Grand Piano and we ate grape-leaf stuffed dolpas and an exquisite salmon dip and rich chocolate cake in this marvelous house–which looked like yours–and I temporarily wanted to live in this alternative life. I sometimes want to be everyone I meet. Until I remember it’s OK living only one life in a lifetime and enjoying everyone else’s unique situation.

    1. Thank you for your lovely compliment Kathy,it is very much appreciated. My husband and I worked real hard to save this house and its history, most people would have torn it down and built a modern home. I had to smile at your comment as I used to want to live in so many of the places that we visited. Now I enjoy visiting other places but always enjoy coming back to our special home. 🙂

  60. I can’t imagine a prettier setting than your home for these marvelous Christmas trees and decorations. I’ll try to imagine eating one (or more) of those delicious cookies too. You are the perfect hostess Karen! Merry Christmas. 🙂

    1. Thank you Meg, for your lovely compliment…I appreciate your kind words. I’m happy to know that you enjoyed the tour of our home decorated for Christmas. I wish we lived nearby…we could enjoy some cookies and talk about all the places we have both visited. I hope you have a wonderful Christmas as well.

    1. Hi Donna, I’m glad that you enjoyed the tour of our home and appreciate you lovely compliment. I agree with you, our home does remind me of some of the Currier and Ives prints at Christmastime.

    1. Thank you for your visit and wish, Saskia. I’m happy to know that you enjoyed my little tour. We did have a lovely Christmas, I hope you did as well.

  61. What a beautiful home and what fun living in such an old home! It looks like you’ve done a fabulous job rennovating and now decorating. Your kitchen is huge and that work table….WOW! Thanks for sharing and hope you and your family had a wonderful Christmas and are enjoying the rest of the holiday!

    1. Thank you for you lovely compliment, MJ. We do love our home, I’m glad that you enjoyed the tour. We did have a lovely Christmas, I hope you did as well.

  62. Wow Karen! I have always wanted to see the inside of your lovely home. It is so beautiful. I can not imagine having all that space! I really love the exterior color, looks fabulous in the snow!

    1. Hi Seana, I had so many requests to see a little more of our home so I decided the Christmas season was the perfect time for a little tour. I’m happy that you enjoyed it. I love the color of our home in the winter, it does brighten a grey day. 🙂

  63. Karen – Thank you, thank you, for stopping by my blog. Had you not, I wouldn’t have found yours and now that I have, I am in love! Oh my gosh, I love your photos, I WANT your kitchen and can definitely smell the gingerbread, I love the way you decorated for the holidays…I could go on and on. At this time of year I get so homesick for cold weather, snow, and everything else that winter brings with it. Living in Florida it’s just not the same.

    1. Thank you Colleen, for stopping by for a visit and your lovely compliment. I know exactly what you mean about the winter season and Christmas…we used to live in south Florida and it just isn’t the same. 🙂

  64. Hello dear Karen, thank you so much for visiting my blog! Nice meeting you-) I love your house and specially your kitchen, very beautiful country style house. My dream-)

    1. Hi Yelena, I was happy to have discovered your blog through La Table de Nana. Thank you for stopping over for a visit and your nice compliment. I’m happy to know that you enjoyed the little tour of our home. I do love our kitchen…it is wonderful to work in.

    1. Ciao Bella, I wish you were a neighbor…you could visit and we would have great fun cooking together. I’m happy to know that you like how we have restored and decorated our home…thank you for your nice compliment. Wishing you all the best for the New Year.

    1. Hi Jill, Thank you for stopping by for a visit and your nice compliment. I’m happy that you enjoyed the little tour of our home. I do enjoy the color of our home…it is especially nice in the winter as it can brighten a gray, snowy day. 🙂

  65. Everythings just beautiful. I can tell you put a lot of thought and care into decorating your home for Christmas! The ladder back chairs around your table remind me of the ones I grew up with. My parents purchased them in New England and my mom painted them (she changed the color a few times over the years). Oh, I wished we could’ve had a white Christmas this year!

Thank you for sharing your beautiful home with us!
    Allison

    1. Hi Allison, I’m glad that you enjoyed the tour of our home decorated for Christmas…it is my favorite holiday. We still have snow on the ground with lots more on the way…perhaps a foot.

    1. Hi Flippen, If you like old then you really would appreciate my house from the 1730’s. I’m real pleased with the way I designed by kitchen, it is very easy to work in and a great place for parties. Thank you for your compliment. 🙂

    1. Thank you Ducky, for your nice compliment. I’m glad that you enjoyed seeing a little of our home. We were happy that we could restore our historic home’s many wonderful features.

  66. Your house is SOOO BEAUTIFUL. i just gasped when i saw it. I am in the midst of a kitchen reno and you have summed up my dreams for seasonal entertaining. I want it to be finished right this second so I can make some gingerbread men that cute!!! You have such an eye for design in everything you do!

    1. Thank you so much Diane, for your kind words…they are very much appreciated. I’ve had a lot of homes over the years but this kitchen is my favorite. It is such a pleasure to work in as everything has a place. Good luck with your new kitchen, I know it will be worth the wait.
