Winter White Is Fashionable

Every one knows the old saying that “you should never wear white after Labor Day”, but that isn’t the case anymore. The softer shade of Winter White Is Fashionable and can be seen everywhere for the past several years. You can dress from head to toe in this trendy color or just choose one item as a fashion statement. Here in New England, nature has dressed the landscape in what can definitely be called winter white.

The lack of sun creates what appears to be a black and white world. Although I’m not a great photographer and the photos are not taken in black and white, these photos remind me of the wonderful black and white photography of Ansel Adams. You have to look closely to see that the pine needles are still green and the trunks of the trees are various shades of brown.

Windows can get coated with snow and frost that obscures the view of the outdoors. The designs are so beautiful that you don’t seem to mind that the light is dulled inside. I enjoy watching as the patterns change during the day, some remind me of frozen ferns.

Icicles form along the edges of the roof when the temperatures start to rise and the sun is shining. All the dripping during the day causes the icicles to grow longer and eventually they cover parts of the windows. When the sun shines on them, they look like Baccarat crystals. Eventually their own weight causes them to fall but until then they are beautiful.

The few items that are not covered with white snow add a pop of color. Interior decorators like to do much the same thing by adding a punch of color to a monochromatic room to make a bold statement.

Our yellow home always looks welcoming in the winter, even after a large snow storm.

After looking at the landscape covered in white, I realize that we can dress much the same way as nature. We can wear winter white from head to toe and have a classic look or we can wear a winter white outfit and add a colorful accessory to make a fashion statement.

"Should we being wearing white?…don't worry, we are wearing winter white"
“Should we being wearing white? Don’t worry, we are wearing winter white…it is very fashionable.”

So when you ask yourself if you should wear white after Labor Day, just dress in winter white…it is very fashionable. Tell me, do you wear white throughout the year or only during the warm months?

    1. I appreciate your nice compliment, Kay. I’m happy to know that you enjoy my photography…thank you. New Hampshire is always cold but I don’t remember a year when we have had so many very cold days. I keep seeing the results of all the rain in your area. It is indeed a strange year weather wise.

  1. Gorgeous winter scenery, Your photos definitely remind me of the wonderful black and white photography of Ansel Adams. The first 2 are my favorites. Love your sheep.

    1. Hi Norma, When we get snow that is heavy and wet, it sticks to everything and creates a beautiful landscape. I find it interesting that color seems to disappear on a winter day when the sun is hidden from view. I love taking photos of what appears to be a black and white world. Thank you for your lovely compliment.

  2. I particularly like the opeing photo and the frosted window. You are not doing bad considering Ansel Adams was working with a 10 X 8 camera and f 64. Keep warm 😉

    1. Hi Mad Dog, I’m glad that you enjoyed the photos. I am such an amateur photographer but did think these turned out good. I thank you for your lovely compliment.

  3. Karen, I have never seen such beautiful “snow” pictures before. Having never seen snow, I am intrigued by your photos. I never knew snow could be so beautiful!
    Have a lovely week ahead.
    🙂 Mandy xo

    1. Thank you Mandy, for your lovely compliment. I’m happy to know that you enjoyed the photos. Snow really is beautiful especially when it is wet and sticks to everything. I appreciate your wish, I hope you have a great week as well.

    1. Hi Kate, I’m happy that you enjoyed the photos. Thank you for your nice compliment. I did think it was fun to add the little bit of narrative…I’m glad you liked it. I’m sure you look quite lovely wearing white.

  4. My mother always taught me not to wear white after Labor Day too. I love winter white and would happily wear it whenever I felt like it. Love the gorgeous photos. I’d nearly forgotten what the windows are like in the winter. I used to put my little hands on the windows to melt the icy patterns. It was COLD but I liked seeing my hand prints.

    1. Hi Maureen, I can remember when I lived at home switching my closet around after Labor Day, putting all the white in the back. I love winter white and think it is such a sophisticated look. I happy to know that you enjoyed the photos and they brought back memories of your childhood. I had never seen windows frost up with the beautiful designs until I moved to New England. Thank you for your nice compliment.

    1. Thank you for your nice compliment, Judy. This has been such a cold winter and I’m with you, I can’t wait until green shoots start appearing. 🙂

  5. Love your winter white scenery! I have had the same experience here and when we visited the Swedish Lapland a year ago. Without the sun, the landscape was indeed almost black and white.

    1. Thank you Laila, I’m glad you enjoyed the photos. I thought this post would be interesting for everyone who doesn’t get a chance to experience what a winter landscape often looks like when it is devoid of sunshine. It feels like you are part of a black and white movie. 🙂

  6. Dear Karen, winter white sounds great but, alas, except for white blouses and t-shirts not much white in my wardrobe. Your photos are amazing, all of them. Nature at its best. No snow here for now but the weather has turned quite cold.

    1. Hi Andrea, I have a few pieces of winter white clothing but not much. My closet is mostly filled with shades of gray, black and brown that I find so practical for traveling. This has been an exceptionally cold winter here but I know that for the most part Europe hasn’t been as cold. I’m happy to know that you enjoyed the photos and appreciate your nice compliment.

  7. I’m shivering just looking at your photos – they are beautiful though. The icicles are incredible, I love the ones adorning the lamp next to your door. Hope you’re managing to keep warm and cosy despite the snow!

    1. Hi Sarah, Even though the weather has been bitter cold, I have managed to stay warm. I dress like Nanook of the North when I go out. With my long puffy down coat, I look like a version of the Michelin Man dressed in black. 🙂 I’m glad you spotted the icicles on the lamp by the front door. Isn’t it amazing that they formed on an angle from all the strong winds? I’m happy that you enjoyed the photos, thank you for your nice compliment.

  8. What a wonderful …. wonderland you live in – the photos are just amazing – love the one with the ice shines. What a beautiful post. We started to get winter yesterday, but nothing this heavy – but ti’s building … and so much bright our day has become. No sun yet. Thanks for this beauty.

    1. Hi Viveka, We do live in a beautiful winter wonderland. The orchard does look very pretty covered in snow. I know you haven’t had much snow this winter in Sweden…it has been rather mild on your side of the ocean this year. Thank you for your nice compliment, I’m happy that you enjoyed the photos.

    1. Hi Anna, Thank you for taking the time to visit and your nice compliment. It appears people wear white whenever they want to now. I used to wear a lot of white when I lived in Florida…it seemed very appropriate for the warm weather. Now I tend to wear more muted colors in the winter and pastels the rest of the year.

  9. I love taking the photos that make the world seem void of color. We are going to Maine in a couple of weeks and I hope to see some wintry scenes. If it’s freezing cold though, I might view them through the window!

    1. Hi Lulu, The sky is very gray this morning and the world outside my windows looks exactly the same as in the photos in this post. The funny thing is that I didn’t do anything to make the photos look devoid of color…that is just what it has looked like recently. The weather has been very cold this year. I don’t think it should be too bad when you get to Maine especially along the coast. 🙂

    1. Hi Monique, I know that our weather is very similar so I can imagine your pretty views right now. Our orchard does look especially pretty when the trees are covered in snow…it does make for a beautiful landscape. Thank you for your nice compliment, I’m glad you enjoyed the photos.

  10. Stunning photos and I love those icicles! Here it’s just rain. No snow this year.
I don’t usually wear white, as it is so hard to keep clean. White clothes tend to spend more time in the wash than on people!

    1. Thank you Fatima, for your nice compliment. I’m happy that you enjoyed the photos. Your comment made me smile, I totally agree with you about trying to keep white clothing clean. 🙂

  11. Gorgeous photos, Karen, and it makes me feel silly to admit that I am shivering here in Tucson where the outside temperature is 51° pre-dawn! (For perspective, we kept the upstairs in our Kittery, Maine, home at 52°!) Do you think men were equally held to the ‘no white after Labor Day’ rule?

    1. I appreciate your nice compliment, David. I’m glad you enjoyed the photos. I think it is all a matter of having the proper clothing on whether we feel cold or not. You did keep you home cool, our home is a toasty 68 downstairs and 65 upstairs. Good question David…I think men that really cared about fashion did follow the rule. White linen suits and dinner jackets were not seen after Labor Day unless you lived in the tropics. Now I believe we all wear what we feel good in and don’t follow a set of rules. 🙂

    1. Hi Marie, Even though it is beautiful, as far as I’m concerned…yes! We had our white Christmas and more, now I’m looking forward to when the big piles of snow start to melt. Unfortunately, more snow is on the way here this week.

  12. Ah, to be where the clean snow stays clean! I spent too many dingy winters in Boston… more gray/brown than black and white. Beautiful photos, and yes, I love your yellow house! Mmmm…

    1. Hi Rachel, I’m glad you enjoyed the photos, thank you for your nice compliment. You are so right…the snow stays pristine here except for the occasional dried leaf that blows by. It is a different story when you live in a city. I love our yellow house anytime of the year but especially during the winter. 🙂

  13. You are making my teeth chatter over here in balmy Hong Kong. I would wear white all year around but even here in HK they change to drab black, blues and grays in the winter months. My pale complexion makes me stand out as it is so I wear the drab colors in the winter and lighter colors in the spring and summer to try to blend in with the crowd. Beautiful and stunning photos. Take care

    1. Thank you Bobbie, for your lovely compliment, I’m happy you enjoyed the photos. Living in Hong Kong, I can imagine how cold this looks to you. When I was writing this article, I looked in my closet to what I have. During summer at the cottage in Maine, I wear white but don’t have much here in New Hampshire, what I have is winter white. My fall and winter wardrobe is mostly brown, gray and black that I use for traveling. I have pastel colored sweaters for spring. 🙂

  14. Such beautiful pictures, your landscape wears white very well and you capture it wonderfully. I love the warmth of your yellow house against the black and white backdrop. Such a mild winter here too, and you have me craving a winter wonderland now.

    1. Thank you Andrea, for your lovely compliment. Our landscape does indeed look good dressed in white. I think our yellow home looks nice surrounded in white and it brightens a gray day. It seems that your part of the world has experienced a warmer and wetter winter season while ours has been especially cold.

    1. I’m glad that you enjoyed the photos, Rosa and appreciate your nice comment. I have been surprised to learn from all my friends from Switzerland that the country doesn’t get all that much snow except in the mountains. 🙂

    1. Thank you Cathy, I’m happy to know that you enjoyed the photos. I remember when you were in Chicago…it has been exceptionally cold and snowy there this year. Snowstorms and cold are normal here in New Hampshire but this year has been much colder than most. I’m thinking a lot about spring weather. 🙂

    1. Hi Angie, I’m glad that you enjoyed the photos…thank you. I like the contrast of the berries against the snow too. Europe has indeed had a much milder winter whereas ours has been especially cold this year. Very strange winter for us all.

  15. Loved the photos of the windows and their icy decorations. I know what you mean about low light levels and grey days for taking photos in the snow – it can certainly be tricky! Lovely to see the trees with their winter coats 🙂

    1. Hi Claire, I enjoy watching how the patterns form and change over the course of a few hours…sometimes completely covering a window pane. The trees do look beautiful coated in snow. I’m glad you enjoyed the winter photos, thank you for your nice compliment.

  16. Hi Karen, I don’t think I have any white in my winter wardrobe but only because I like the idea of wearing warm and bright colors for cheer and coziness. Your photos are all beautiful but I am most fascinated by the one of your red door with the icicles on the light all bending to the side. I can only imagine the steady, cold wind that caused them to form like that! Stay warm, we are headed for a few more cold New England days and nights. Linda

    1. Hi Linda, I checked my winter wardrobe when I started writing this post. I don’t have much white either. I do have winter white wool slacks that I like to wear with bright colors but most of my clothes are shades of brown, gray and black that I wear when traveling. I’m glad that you liked the photos on the front door light. You can see that the wind was blowing hard and for a long time for the icicles to form to the side like that. Thank you for your nice compliment and wish.

  17. This morning I woke up in the middle of snow storm, soft but intense.
Even though in Montreal we are use to it, I spent 20 minutes watching the snow falling down from my windows… now it’s time to get dressed, thanks for your advices, Il”l try to find my white sweater from the closet. Congrats for your pictures, they are really amazing!

    1. Hi Margherita, I understand exactly what you mean. No matter how much it snows, I never get tired of looking at it. The other day we had huge snowflakes that whirled around in the air and didn’t seem to want to fall…it was beautiful. I’m glad you enjoyed the photos, thank you for your lovely compliment.

    1. Thank you for your lovely compliment, Linda. I’m glad you enjoyed the photos. I know what you mean…as winter drags on, we all can grow a little tired of it. 🙂

  18. Beautiful photos and those icicles are impressive! I don’t own much white clothing, but don’t shy away from the pieces I do have for any particular “seasonal rule.”

    1. Thank you Plumdirt, I’m happy to know that you enjoyed the post and appreciate your nice compliment. I think most of us tend to dress in what we are comfortable wearing rather than following fashion rules. 🙂

  19. I remember reading all about winter white when I wanted to buy a new outfits right as winter was starting. I never did, but love the idea and colour of white in winter, if nature does it, why can’t we?
Your landscape looks a bit like ours, but we do get a reprieve every now and then and the sun shines with beautiful blue skies. Today however, it’s a snowy wonderland for us. Your photos are lovely, and I adore your yellow home.

    1. Hi Nazneen, You are so right…if mother nature looks good in white, I think we will too. 🙂 I’m happy that you enjoyed the photos and appreciate you nice compliment. I love our yellow house as well, especially in the winter when we need all the color we can get.

    1. Thank you Seana, for your lovely compliment. I agree with you, I do think we live in a wonderful spot. Remember the saying, be careful what you wish for. 🙂 Snow is beautiful and I enjoy it but sometimes it creates problems. We will be heading out on a trip soon and I’m hoping snow won’t mess up our travel plans.

      1. Very true. Does not go well with travel plans at all. Seattle is an extremely “hilly” city and snow wreaks havoc on getting around. Still love it though, I mean, just one storm would be nice! 🙂

    1. Thank you Roger, for your kind words. Your compliment is much appreciated as I am a rank amateur. Perhaps some day I’ll be able to visit your part of France and learn from a true professional. 🙂

  20. This is such a beautiful but different reality to mine. We are gray for sure but hardly a lick of snow. Just a little would be lovely. Thanks for sharing your winter whites- it’s romantic for us who don’t experience it.

    1. Hi Wendy, I always thought that the Pacific Northwest would get its fair share of snow. I’m always amazed how relatively mild it is where you live compared to the Northeast. I’m glad that you enjoyed the photos…thank you!

  21. Winter white is always an off-white, less bright than the stark white of summer, but I do like wearing it for contrast with black. I love the frosted window, the design on each one so unique and beautiful. Thanks for sharing your winter wonderland, it reminds me to behold the beauty of each season. 🙂

    1. Hi Judy, I like winter white, to me the softer color is more flattering on most people. Thank you for your nice compliment, I’m glad you enjoyed the photos. Sometimes it does feel like I’m living in a winter wonderland.

  22. Beautiful pictures! What an amazing winter. Our winter is very unfashionably… colorful as opposed to your beautiful snowy winter. I am not complaining as the weather has actually been quite mild and mostly sunny, and that is better than constant rain and wind. But I would have enjoyed a tiny bit of snow nevertheless.

    1. Hi Darya, Your winter actually sounds very pleasant…colorful, mild, sunny without constant rain and wind. I know what you mean, I think we all enjoy a little snow during the winter. If I could, I would exchange a little of my snow for what you describe. I’m happy that you enjoyed the photos of what our winter has been like so far, thank you for your nice compliment.

  23. These are beautiful shots, Karen. I’ve noticed that my pictures of snow look black and white as well.

I think winter whites are beautiful, as long as you aren’t getting spattered!! I’d like to see what they are wearing in Switzerland right now! I bet that would be the way to go!

    XO,
    Jane

    1. Thank you Jane, for your compliment about my photos. So many of us seem to be living a a black and white world with all the snow storms. I agree with you about how pretty winter white is, it is very flattering to most people. You are right about getting it splattered, I don’t think I would wear it to a cocktail party for instance. 🙂

  24. wow, you know I don’t like the cold, but I definitely love the winter white look of it!! Just stunning, truly your photos have captured the unique beauty of a winter wonderland!!

    1. Hi Linda, It seems there are a lot of people (especially those living in the south) who don’t like cold weather but do appreciate the beauty of a landscape covered in snow. I’m happy that you enjoyed the photos and appreciate your lovely compliment.

  25. Good Afternoon Karen, Your photos are so very beautiful. When I looked at the first photo the trees in the distance looked like they were made of delicate lace…. and the frost on the window pane…. so very beautiful. I have never experienced weather like yours and luckily here in the North of England, we have not had any snow yet…. lots of rain but no snow…. so we are keeping our fingers crossed that it remains that way….although having said that, the south of England is really suffering with the constant downpour of rain.
Thank you for such a lovely visual treat.
    Best Wishes
    Daphne

    1. Thank you Daphne, for your kind words. I’m happy to know that you enjoyed the photos. I have experienced the problems that snow can cause in England. A couple of years ago, we didn’t think we would make it home right before Christmas because of snow at the London airport. Some parts of England have indeed been experiencing way too much rain.

  26. magnifique, Karen… There’s plenty of snow in the French-Spanish Pyrénées(2h-drive from Toulouse) but not here… my rosemary and my Toulouse violets are already blossomin’! 🙂

    1. Bonjour Mélanie, I’m happy that you enjoyed the photos…thank you. Isn’t it nice that your violets are already in bloom and yet you can take a two hour ride and enjoy the snow in the Pyrénées. 🙂

  27. Winter white is lovely …when you don’t have to shovel it for the 4th day in a row. 🙂

I love the frost covered windows, the icicles with the sun shining through them and the snow covered red berries. The sheep are adorable as well with the painting as a backdrop.

    1. Hi Boleyn, I do agree with you about the shoveling. The snow that made everything look so beautiful in these photos was the heavy wet kind. I’m glad you enjoyed the photos. I thought it would be fun to end the post with my little sheep in their winter white wool…folk art placed in front of our folk art painted dining room wall. Thank you for your nice compliment as always. 🙂

      1. I think that last picture would make a great card. Idea stolen from a commercial birthday card.

        (Cover)

“There’s a reason we didn’t buy you a birthday present.

        (and on the inside)

        We’re two sheep.
        Happy Birthday”

Or, it would be great on a mug.

  28. Don’t sell yourself short Karen, your photos are exquisite! You have a very good eye for composition, I particularly like the frosted window shot but that doesn’t mean I don’t love them all. Your land scape is beautiful, if it wasn’t so darn cold I would go for a walk, but it’s so windy that it blows right into your bones.
I adore the look of winter white any time of year.

    1. Thank you for your kind words, Eva…they are very much appreciated. I’m happy to know that you enjoyed the photos. I enjoy watching how the designs change over a few hours on the frosted windows…I think they are beautiful. I agree with you about winter white, I think it is a very flattering color for most people.

    1. I appreciate your lovely compliment, Madonna. I’m so happy to know that you enjoyed the photos. You are so right…hats, hoods, and more are necessary to try and stay warm and dry but they can wreak a hair style. 🙂

  29. I love, love, love those photographs. Karen, can you find some way to ship all that snow to California? I know you’re sick of the snow, but I’m so sick of this California drought!

    1. Hi Arlene, I appreciate your nice compliment…thank you. I watch on the news all the time about the terrible drought conditions in California. Since I can’t ship the snow, I wish real hard that the state starts getting some much needed rain.

    1. Hi trkingmomoe, I’m happy that you enjoyed the photos of the snow. My husband and I moved from South Florida to New Hampshire and I remember how excited I was with me first snow. Sometimes we get a little too much but it is always beautiful.

  30. Great shots Karen – I especially like the windows and could easily spend a week in that environment all cozied up by the fire. I’ve often wondered who makes these rules like white after labor day and I’m more in awe that intelligent people pay any attention to them 🙂

    1. Thank you Larry, for your nice compliment. With all the cold, I’ve been staying in our cozy house a lot. I always enjoy your outlook and your comment is so true. We should wear what each of us feels is appropriate and are comfortable in. 🙂

  31. Hi Karen. What wonderful photos , I’d love to run all around the snow in your orchards leaving footprints. I can almost feel the silence, it’s amazing .how the icicles are formed leaning to the right.. When it starts to thaw is it gradual or does it clear quickly with it being wet snow ? I’m with you on only wearing white in the summer, I do have a long white crinkly scarf I wrap several times around my neck to lighten up my winter wardrobe of black. We are still having rain everyday, but it seems snow is on it’s way towards the end of the week. For me, Winter is not winter unless we have snow, but not too much, or we’ll get our car out of these narrow lanes.
Thank you so much for your kind comments about my health, I have an appointment to see a specialist next month, Loved your post
Enjoy your lovely warm home, wrapped up nice & cozy.

    1. Thank you Barbara, for your lovely compliment. I’m happy that you enjoyed the winter photos. We plow our road so it doesn’t take to long for the snow to melt there but it takes a long time for all our snow on the ground to melt. It varies from year to year but all the snow is usually gone by the end of March or the beginning of April. I hope you get a little snow but not enough to make driving a problem. 🙂 I hope the specialist will be able to help you, in the meantime take care.

  32. Loving living vicariously through your blog! Your weather is quite literally the polar opposite to ours (I’m looking at brown shriveled leaves as we speak). Your photos are absolutely beautiful (I scrolled through them twice) and are indeed like Ansel Adams’ masterpieces, so painterly. My young son loves your photo of the icicles!

    1. Thank you Sas, for your kind words. I bet your son did like the icicles…I like to look at them too. 🙂 I think one of the things I enjoy most about blogging is learning how similar and yet different our parts of the world can be at any given time.

    1. Hi Uru, I appreciate you nice compliment. At times, it does look like a real wonderland…especially when the trees are all coated with snow.

  33. Karen you really captured New England in those photos – I can feel the chill. Love the beautiful designs of the frost on the window.
Now I’m old school so no summer white after Labor Day and not before Memorial Day BUT winter white is absolutely one of my favorites. I’ve made sure my daughter knows ‘the rule’ too. A while back a salesperson tried to talk me into some summer white shoes for a fall event. Gasp! Now that’s really going to far and frankly I think she was trying to make a sale, any sale…so I explained the rule to her too.

    1. Hi Diane, It is alway nice to receive a compliment like yours from another New Englander, thank you. I get very frustrated when I get a pushing sales person…they will tell you anything to make a sale. Definitely not summer white shoes for a fall event…especially here in our neck of the woods. 🙂

  34. Karen, I can only imagine what it’s like to go through winter with snow… as snow does fall here where I live, but melts soon after. The ice on the window is just beautiful, as are the rest of the photographs. Thanks for sharing this. I am posting it onto linked in.

    1. Hi Lizzy, Life is very different here during winter, at least for me. I become a homebody and don’t go out unless with weather is nice. I don’t mind the cold but I’d rather not drive in the snow. Thank you for sharing my post, that is so thoughtful of you. 🙂

    1. Hi Helen, I’m glad you enjoyed the photos. When the trees are coated with snow, I think it is beautiful too. I know what you mean, if I didn’t mention that these were actually color photos, you would think they were taken in black and white. 🙂

  35. Winter White never looked so good, Karen. Amazing shots! I suppose if Mother Nature insists on giving us Winter White weather, we should just learn to appreciate it and patiently wait for Spring Green:)

Thank you so much for sharing, Karen…I have been having the dardest time commenting on your blog. Hopefully, I’ve cleared it up, or should I say wordpress has cleared it up:) Loved youe Caldo Verde soup. I don;t know if that comment went through:)

    1. Hi Louise, Your comment made me smile. Not only did I appreciate the nice compliment about my photos but your thoughts on patiently waiting for Spring Green. I’m sorry to hear that you are having problems commenting lately but your comment did go through on the caldo verde post. I really appreciate all the effort that you have gone through to leave a comment…that is so nice. 🙂

  36. The two baa lambs are gorgeous. I love your images. You’ve taken me to a world I have never experienced. It’s all fascinating. I love the image where you have to look hard to see that the pine trees actually have some green on them xx

    1. I appreciate your lovely comment Charlie, I’m so happy that you enjoyed the post about what our winters are like hear in New Hampshire. I’m glad you like the little lambs, they are such fun folk art pieces. They make me smile every time I look at them. 🙂

  37. This is such a fun post Karen, with lovely photos as always. (Love the last one! 😉 ) I usually only wear white in the summer, mainly because it makes me look so pale in winter without a bit of a tan! The frosty windows are making me feel chilly – haven’t seen “jack frost” since I was a child. And the icicles are amazing!

    1. I’m happy to know that you enjoyed the post, Cathy and thank you for your nice compliment. I thought the lambs would be a fun way to end the post…I’m glad you liked it. I had to smile about being so pale, me too. I go from having a nice tan when we spent summer at the lake in Maine to being pastey white during the winter when every inch of my body is covered in warm clothing. 🙂

  38. Beautiful pictures!! I don’t wear white at any time of year because my skin tone doesn’t seem to like it very much :-). However, I think that white should definitely be worn all year long by anyone who can pull it off!
    Kenley

    1. Hi Kenley, I’m glad that you liked the photos, thank you. It appears that they are several of us that have pale skin and white can make us look even paler.

  39. Karen your photos are stunning – you are an amazing photographer! Made me smile too – loved the sheep 😉 No snow here, just wind, rain, the odd glimpse of incredible winter sunshine then more wind and rain – but I am in England and the sea looks beautiful when the weather is wild!

    1. Thank you for your kind words, Tanya. I really appreciate you lovely compliment about the photos. The sheep make me smile with their silly little expressions and I thought they would give everyone a chuckle. It certainly has been a wet and wild winter for parts of England. I’m sure that there is a rugged beauty to the sea when the wild is blowing.

  40. Fabulous photos, Karen, and cute post. Baby Lady won’t let me wear white after Labor Day. 😦 I tried once in the beautiful winter weather we were having at the time – in the 80s in December. Inasmuch as many people would blame her for my bad/unfashionable/unseasonable attire, I wore something else. I would never embarrass the Baby Lady, at least not knowingly. 😮

    1. You gave me a real chuckle with your comment about Baby Lady not approving of you wearing white in December. 🙂 The two of you remind me a lot of my husband and I in many ways. Thank you for your very nice compliment, I’m happy that you enjoyed the post and photos.

  41. If I could look half so spectacularly glamorous as Mother Earth does in her winter whites, I’d wear it all year. Alas, I just look like I’m dressed in my winding sheet when I get up in white of any sort, so I’ll leave it to people with actual pigment in their skin, and to Ma Nature. 😀 Great photos!!

    1. Hi Kathryn, I have to agree with you about how beautiful the landscape is dressed in winter white. I’m happy that you enjoyed the post and photos…thank you.

    1. Thank you Chris, for your nice compliment. I’m happy that you enjoyed the photos and that you like our yellow house. I love the color, especially in the winter when it brightens a gray day. I hope you enjoy the snow that you are getting and that it doesn’t present any problems. 🙂

  42. Absolutely love your gloriously peaceful and detailed black-and-white photos – really some of the best I have ever seen! Such can take one on a journey ~ in this instance they truly have walked with me. Clothes: white/black/grey/beige is my colour comfort spectrum . . .quite frankly I do not take the seasons into account at all – I dress to please me: I’ll let the trees and flowers and colourful birds tell the other side of the story!!

    1. What can I say Eha but Thank You. You flatter me with your kind words…I’m happy that you enjoyed the photos. It sounds like our closets have lots of the same colors. The main difference is that most of mine are cold weather items. 🙂

    1. Hi Kelli, This was a beautiful snowstorm but certainly not the biggest as far as the amount. Living in New Hampshire, you learn to deal with snow. My husband has a snow plow for his truck and we have a snow blower on the tractor so the snow usually isn’t a problem. 🙂

  43. I so enjoyed this post. The photography is so lovely and the fashion advice appreciated! I love those winter photos where you can’t quite tell if it’s black and white or not. It’s so easy to think of this time of year as dull and dreary, but even on the dull days there’s always beauty to be found. That said, I prefer the sunny ones. Stay warm!

    1. Thank you for your lovely compliment, Marlene. I’m happy that you enjoyed seeing my winter world. It is beautiful but I do agree with you about sunny days. The snow on the trees doesn’t usually last long once the sun comes. Before it melts or is blown away it glitters like diamonds. I have tried to capture the sparkles with my camera but it doesn’t see what my eye does. 🙂

  44. Awesome photos, Karen…makes me want to go home for a visit this winter! Sure wish we ere wearing winter white here on the prairie, we are looking at ugly brown and leafless trees. We haven’t had more than a dusting of snow all winter…and some freezing cold days.
    Have a wonderful week.

    1. Thank you Marigene, I appreciate your compliment. I’m glad that you enjoyed the photos. This winter is strange…full of extremes no matter where you live. I know this is one of our coldest but the snow seems about average for us…but we have February and March yet to come. 🙂

  45. What a seren post Karen – I can almost feel the chill in the air. Specially, where in the desertscape of Dubai. We do know what a white winter is – alibi an indoor snow park inside a shopping mall!

    1. Thank you for your visit and lovely compliment, Ishita. I’m happy that you enjoyed the post and photos. I have heard of the snow park in Dubai. The nice thing is that you can enjoy the snow but don’t have to worry about shoveling the snow off the walkways. 🙂

  46. Absolutely glorious!! How I love this post, Karen. 🙂 We’re smack in the middle of summer here, and it is lovely to linger on your snowy pictures for a while. 🙂

    1. Thank you Krista, I’m happy to know that you enjoyed spending a little time in my snowy world. It is much the same as I enjoy lingering in the warmth of your beach photos. 🙂

  47. I don’t wear white very often, Karen. It just isn’t a color that looks too good on me–or so I think! 🙂 But the white on those trees is dramatic and just incredibly beautiful. I love the photos. The icicles on your front porch light caught my attention, too! It looks tremendously cold, but very lovely!

    1. Hi Debra, I’m happy that you enjoyed the photos of winter here in New Hampshire. It is 20 today, the sun is shining, with no wind and it is deceptively warm after days in the single digits. 🙂 I have been going through my closet planning for a future trip. I’ve determined that a I’m too pale for white unless it is slacks with a bright top.

    1. Hi Raymund, You are right about the cold. Living in New Hampshire, we expect snow and cold but this winter has been very cold. I’m glad you enjoyed the photos…thank you.

  48. Hahahahahhha,…What a lot of snow you are having there! We haven’t had any snow yet this winter in Belgium! Waw!!!! Amazing beautiful pics too, dear Karen! 🙂

    1. Hi Sophie, We do have quite a bit of snow on the ground but it is typical of our winters. From what I have been reading from all my European friends such as yourself, it seems that you have a milder winter than normal. I’m glad you enjoyed the photos…thank you for your nice compliment.

    1. Thank you Ronelle, for your nice compliment. I’m glad you enjoyed the photos. Oh yes, that is a wonderful combination,I have a winter white coat and hat that I enjoy wearing too.

    1. Hi Jessica, I’m happy to know that you enjoyed the photos. I remember when I lived in Richmond, Texas, and we got snow once…everyone was so excited to see it. I had been sick and my mother wouldn’t let me go out in it so I just enjoyed it from the windows. 🙂

    1. Thank you Renee, I’m happy to know that you liked the photos. Yes, you do have to be careful of the icicles. The ones in the photo are over our porch roof so there is no chance they will come down on anyone. 🙂

    1. Hi Chunklet, I’m happy we live in New Hampshire where we get four distinct seasons. If we had cold without snow, it wouldn’t be near as pretty. I’m glad you enjoyed the photos, thank you!

  49. I have seen some very chic continental women dressed in winter white but I am not brave enough to try it. I like the idea in principle but sadly I don’t think winter white marries well with the rainy Irish weather. Lovely images Karen. 😉

    1. Oh yes B, wearing white does present problems. Not only do you have to watch out for splashes that the rain causes but also for dribbles that seem to come at the most inappropriate time. I’m trying to plan my wardrobe for an upcoming trip and my winter white slacks have been in the “yes” pile and the “no” pile as I’m wondering how long they would remain pristine. 🙂

    1. You gave me a chuckle with your comment, Celia. Yes are right, if you wear winter white, you might tend to disappear in the landscape like the trees. I’m glad you enjoyed the photos, thank you for your nice compliment. 🙂

  50. I knew you’d have gorgeous views! The snow is oh so beautiful! It is funny, because I’ve seen people wearing “summer white” after labor day, but they don’t have labor day here in Ireland so there is no cut-off date for wearing such things! (I like having that date to end one fashion season and begin another!) Dana

    1. Hi Dana, I glad you enjoyed the photos. Thank you for your nice compliment. We do have beautiful views in the orchard this time of the year. I thought about other parts of the world when I was writing this article…wondering if there were any rules of when to stop wearing bright summer white during the year.

    1. Hi Donna, I’ve been debating about packing winter white slacks for a trip I am planning for just the reason you mentioned. The slightest little thing will show up on them. I’m happy that you enjoyed the photos of our winter landscape…thank you.

  51. Thanks for reminding me of the white after Labor Day rule. I know it is fine for everyone else to wear it but in memory of my prim and proper Mother, I just can’t do it. I love your pictures and your yellow house. It is snowing here and I may have a few white pictures to share soon.

    1. Hi Southern, Thank you for your nice compliment. I’m happy to know that you enjoyed the photos. I will be looking forward to snow photos from you. I can certainly relate to your comment. There were many things that are parents taught us that are ingrained into how we still live our life.

  52. These are lovely photos. I think my favorite is the frozen window panes! We’ve had quite a few frozen panes (and pains, too actually!) this harsh winter. But the snow is beautiful.

    1. Hi Becky, Thank you for your visit and nice compliment. I enjoy watching the frosty designs as they form on the window panes. It doesn’t happen often but when it does, they are beautiful.

    1. Thank you Darryl, I appreciate you nice compliment…I’m happy you enjoyed my photos. I could definitely disappear in the orchard if I was wearing white except my deep footsteps in the snow would give my location away. 🙂

  53. Karen, your photos are amazing…but I must confess that I would not like if I were living in places that have this beautiful scene….I rather enjoy from a photo.
Thanks for the post and hope you are having a wonderful week 😀

    1. Hi Juliana, I certainly understand that lots of people don’t like cold or anything associated with it. In your case, it is fun to see it from afar so I’m happy you enjoyed the post. Thank you for your nice compliment and wish, I hope you are having a good week as well.

    1. Thank you for your visit and compliment, Terra. I’m glad that you enjoyed the photos. Snow does create a peaceful environment…it muffles the sounds of the world around us.

    1. I appreciate you kind words, John. I’m very happy that you enjoyed the photos. I may have a good eye but need to learn so much more when it comes to photography. 🙂

  54. Not being American I have only know this rule about not wearing white before LD from tv and always thought it was such a quaint tradition 🙂 No qualms about wearing white, here! And I love your pictures. The one with the red berry tree looks like a shot of a white dress matched with a stunning red necklace.

    1. Hi Afra, I’m happy to know that you enjoyed the photos. I love your thoughts on the red berries…that is a beautiful analogy. 🙂 It has been interesting to learn that in other parts of the world, there are no suggestions about when or when not to wear white.

  55. Cute post 🙂 What lovely photos but I have to say I am getting a little tired of the monochromatic vistas and frosted windows here. Your photos are truly lovely in any event! I’m ready, spring!

    1. Thank you Susan, I’m happy that you enjoyed the post and photos. At this time of the year, I believe we are all looking forward to pale green sprouts emerging from the earth at the beginning of spring. 🙂

    1. I’m glad you agree with me Meg, about how pretty winter white looks when it covers our orchard. Thank you for your lovely compliment, I’m happy you enjoyed the photos.

  56. Talk about winter art – naturally stunning ! I have to confess that I do feel a little chilly shiver when I see photos with that amount of snow, but then I imagine the warmth inside your home and the shivers disappear ! 🙂

    1. Hi Carolyn, I enjoyed your comment…nature does have a wonderful way of creating a wonderful palette in varying shades of white. Our winter has been very cold this year but our house definitely takes the chill off once you are inside. 🙂

    1. Thank you Suzanne, for your nice compliment. I’m happy that you enjoyed the photos of our winter scenery. There are many days I don’t venture out with my car in the winter but I do enjoy the beauty of out winters…especially since our home has the orchard surrounding it. 🙂

  57. Your snow pictures are fantastic – there must have been a lot of snow there. Here, in the Metro Atlanta area, we finally received about 3 inches of snow last Tuesday, after 3 years of no snow, but we could not handle even that and some people were stuck on the roads up to 19 hours….

    1. Hi Vagabonde, Thank you for stopping by and your nice compliment. I’m happy you enjoyed the photos. Each of our snow storms has been about 6 to 8 inches. New Hampshire is so well equipped to handle snow that within a couple hours after a storm, you can see the black top on the roads. It was terrible what happened in the Atlanta area…hopefully that won’t happen again.

    1. Thank you TW, for your nice compliment. I’m glad you enjoyed the photos. The icicles are pretty…the ones in the photo were hanging from the second story but were above our porch so they couldn’t do any harm. 🙂

    1. Hi Dedy, I found your comment very interesting about toddlers being traumatized by a white coat. I like to see doctors in white coats…it is very professional. 🙂

  58. Lovely photos Karen! I’m particularly taken with the frosted window panes. You captured them so well. The snow is quite beautiful when you stop to really look. (I just hate to drive in it!) One of these days we’ll make it to New England in the winter. And fall. I want to see it in the fall too. 🙂

    1. Hi Kristy, I appreciate you nice compliment. I agree with you, I like the frosted window panes. It does’t happen all the time and usually only to a few windows. I believe you would enjoy a fall trip more than winter one as there is more to do.

  59. OK, Karen, you have made me think winter white. If it’s so fashionable, I might have to improve my attitude! No, seriously, your photos are beautiful. Snow can be so gorgeous. It’s just the darn cold which seems to be endless especially this year. Thanks for cheering us up!

    1. Hi Kathy, I appreciate your nice compliment and I’m happy to know I have cheered you up. By this time of the year, I do think we are all wishing for warmer temperature and less snow even if it is beautiful. 🙂 We have another 6 to 12 inches of snow coming our way on Wednesday.

  60. beautiful photos and thanks for the reminder of snowy days in the country- here in Boston, the snow gets brown pretty quick! My favorite part is the “quiet” – nothing more special than a walk after a fresh snowfall and hearing the “quiet”
    – oh and I wear winter white mostly for casual weekend wear (Big neck sweaters and such) as work days I don the required black, grey and brown “city uniform” LOL!

  61. Beautiful post and icy-snowy photos, my dear! Very Ansel Adams, indeed. Love the gorgeous ice crystals formation on the window and how the blowing wind made your icicles slanted from the front porch sconce. I’m with you…I enjoy winter white in the winter even though I do put away all the stark white wardrobe pieces after summer. Thanks for sharing and have a fabulous week!

    1. I appreciate your nice compliment, Stacy. I’m happy that you enjoyed the post and photos of our winter landscape. Yes, all the bright white in my wardrobe is now in the back of my closet just waiting for summer. 🙂

    1. Hi Shelley, I appreciate your visit and lovely compliment. The landscape is beautiful after a snowstorm…we just had another one. I’m glad you enjoyed the little sheep as they seemed to fit in with the post.

    1. Hi Alli, I’m beginning to think that winter white is a little too fashionable of late. We just had another snowstorm with over a foot of snow. 🙂

  62. A beautiful tribute to winter. Although this winter is starting to feel a bit long, I would rather have thick blankets of snow in these cold months than none at all.

    1. Thank you for your lovely compliment, Heather. I tend to agree with you about winter feeling a bit long, we just received another foot of snow. One thing that is true…it is pretty. 🙂

  63. I love this post, Karen, the tour of your yard with all those trees dressed in frosty lacy snow is just stunning. You must have had a difficult time selecting only a few photos to share with us. Your shutter must have just gone “click, click, click” because everywhere you’d look there is so much splendor! This is the only reason I think I’ve never moved and the only reason I love winter.. but your setting is so much lovelier than mine with that many trees.. those icicles! This is all just so very lovely! xx

    1. Thank you Barbara, for your lovely compliment. With our home being surrounded by the apple orchard, the property is especially pretty covered in snow. 🙂

    1. Hi Daisy, I’m happy to know that you enjoyed the photos of our orchard when it is blanketed in snow. This has been a very cold winter…just a couple of days away from the start of spring and we still have a foot of snow on the ground.
