A Change In Latitudes

Seeking an escape from the harsh winters of New England, my husband and I decided it was time for A Change In Latitudes and a new adventure in our lives somewhere it is warm. A more southerly place with a laid back lifestyle but still offering good restaurants and cultural events nearby.

Temperature Upon Waking This Week
Temperature Upon Waking This Week

When we sold our sweet little cottage on the lake in Naples, Maine, our intention was to spend summers at our home in New Hampshire tending our apple orchard and to find a second home to spend winters somewhere in Florida. As much as we enjoyed our years living in Key Largo and Miami, we felt south Florida had become too congested for the lifestyle we are looking forward to. With that in mind, we spent time this past summer visiting the towns of Naples, Boca Raton, Boynton Beach and Vero Beach.

We decided on Vero Beach with its small town feel, beautiful beaches and parks, cultural activities and of course the mild weather. On a visit three years ago, I wrote “This small oceanfront community has all the sophistication of the Hampton’s or Nantucket without the crowds. It is laid back enough that a pair of chinos, a polo shirt and boat shoes will get you into most restaurants”.

We originally thought we would buy an existing home but after looking at what was available, we decided that having a house remodeled while living more than a thousand miles away would be too daunting even for experienced renovators like ourselves.

Our other option was to find a new house that was for sale but nothing was quite right. We saw houses by a builder that we liked but they were located in the western suburbs of Vero Beach. The area was nice but we felt it was more appropriate for young couples wanting to raise a family. By chance, we found an available lot in a gated community just five minutes from the beach and downtown Vero Beach and decided to have a new house built by the builder we liked. Less than half the size of our home in New Hampshire but twice the size of the cottage in Maine, the “easy keeper” will be perfect for just the two of us…even the small yard will be maintained by the community association.

My husband and I have often said we would never live in Florida again but the past couple of winters have made us change our minds. This week, temperatures have been below zero and in the teens, our long driveway is covered in ice and snow covers the ground. We have recently decided to live full time in the home we are having built in Vero Beach and list our New Hampshire home for sale in the next couple of months.

While it will be hard to leave our beautiful home in New England and the friends we have made here over the years, we are looking forward to what lies ahead and feel it is the right thing to do at this time in our life. We will only be a couple of hours away from our children and grandchildren who all live in south Florida and that will be nice.

Yes, we will be called “snowbirds” but it will be nice each winter to enjoy the warmth of the sun instead of looking out the window as snowdrifts cover a freshly plowed driveway and icicles form across the entire house. There will no longer be a need for a heavy duty pickup truck with a snowplow, a large tractor with a bucket, a garden tractor mounted with a snowblower and shovels to get rid of the many feet of snow that accumulates over the course of the harsh New England winters and that will be really nice.

The idea of being able to lock up our home and spend time traveling wherever we want any time of the year is something we are looking forward to. With the change in latitude, maybe there will be a change in attitude when anyone mentions winter to us in the future.

  1. That’s a brave step you’re taking and I wish you both all the luck in the world. I don’t blame you, either, as I am finding winters in the UK harder and harder to cope with as I grow older and my dream is to retire in south east Spain, where I was born, but I’ve got a few years left yet before retirement.
I love Florida: I spent a week in Orlando and really enjoyed the the mild weather and the huge size and space of Daytona Beach, but I am not sure how far that is from Vero Beach. All the best! 🙂

    1. It is a little scary when you make a big move like this but we think we will enjoy our new life…we know we won’t be miss winter. 🙂 Orlando is about 2 hours drive west, Daytona Beach is about 2 1/2 hours north and West Palm Beach is about 1 1/2 hours south of Vero Beach…that will give you an idea of where we will be located. Thank you for your wish, Fatima.

  2. We are in the process of selling our home in Vancouver, BC and buying something in sunny Spain. We too no longer enjoy the cold wet winters. The more relaxed lifestyle on the coats of Spain will be refreshing as well. Good luck on your move.

    1. Hi Darlene, I think the cold winters are making a lot of us think about relocating to a sunny, warm climate. Good luck with your move as well, we have a lot of new adventures ahead of us. 😀

  3. Wow – that’s a big change, but one you already know. I can’t say I blame you for moving away from the cold winters in the north and for wanting to be closer to your family 🙂

    1. Hi Mad Dog, It will be a big change. Even though we have lived in Florida before, this will be a new area for us…we liked it when we visited in the past and we will enjoy being closer to our family. 🙂

    1. Thank you for your wish, Plumdirt. We are looking forward to the new chapter in our life. I appreciate your wish…you know all about moving.

      1. Too much, I’m afraid! We recently realized that our twelve year old cat has lived in eleven places! (And most of those were in the first six years.) All will be well, I’m sure.

      2. We are right there with you on the number of times moving just not quite so often. My sweet mother-in-law called us gypsies. 😀

    1. Hi Kay, We think Vero Beach is a delightful town with lots of things to do…we are looking forward to the change. Our family is very happy that we will be a lot closer to them. Thank you for your wish.

  4. Oh my goodness. I just did chores, trying not to fall on the ice, bringing in the buckets of frozen water to thaw, and planning to go back in a couple of hours re repeat this process. Your change in latitude sounds like a plan to me. Will look forward to your Florida adventures, but if I’m honest I’ll be a little jealous of your warm temps. 🙂

    1. Hi Judy, I feel for you. I have been hacking ice off our driveway for the last two days. A limo will be picking us up to take us to Boston while it is still dark tomorrow morning and I don’t want us to fall on the ice before we head to Florida for a construction meeting. I’m happy to know that you will enjoy reading about our new adventures in Florida, thank you!

  5. How exciting for you Karen! I would have a hard time leaving that beautiful New Hampshire home, but I have a feeling your Florida home will be just as lovely. Hopefully you will share it with us. Congratulation on the move. You will love Florida in that area.

    1. Hi Penny, Our new adventure will be exciting but it will be very hard to leave our beautiful home behind. It is one of a kind but life is more than about a house and we certainly don’t need such a large home. I believe we will really enjoy Vero Beach, it is lovely. I will be sharing photos of our home, we are heading south in the morning for a construction meeting. 🙂

  6. Ahhh…nothing better than a Jimmy Buffett song to make us all look southward for some peace of mind. I know you will miss your beautiful home sometimes but a new adventure is so exciting, isn’t it? I hope you will find someone who loves your home and grounds as much as you do and are willing to put in the work needed to maintain it’s current beauty! I look forward to the posts narrating your new venture!

    1. Hi Kelli, Jimmy Buffett’s song seemed like the perfect lead in to this post. Having lived in Key Largo, his music was very familiar. I’m really hoping that we find someone that falls in love with our home and property. It is a lot of work but lots of people want farm to market produce now and our orchard is all heritage apples. I’m happy to know that you will enjoy following along on our new adventure, thank you!

  7. Congratulations Karen! Big changes, yet a new turnkey home designed to your needs will be a dream come true. As a homeowner, I too must make some big changes in the next few years. I will look forward to updated posts as the new home comes out of the ground. Kudos!
    Send more photos of Vero!

    1. Thank you Diane, for your nice comment. I’m happy to know that you will enjoy following along on our new adventure. Yes, big changes as we downsize our life but I think they will be pleasant ones. I’ll definitely share more photos of Vero as we will be doing a lot of traveling back and forth over the next few months.

      1. What gated community did you choose?
At least you know what you are facing in Florida climate. Definitely inviting on northern winter days like today

  8. That’s so wonderful, Karen..my husband and I are just now discussing what possibilities are out there for us too. Maybe in a few years..

I wish you all the happiness in your change in latitude… I know that wherever you go, you’ll make your new homes as warm, welcoming, and filled with love as your home in Maine was. I hope you share photos! ❤️

    1. Thank you Prudy, for your sweet comment. My husband and I have been thinking about this for some time. We made our road trip that I wrote about in 1012 down the east coast investigating places that we might consider moving to someday but the last couple of winters made us decide to make the move now. I’ll definitely be sharing photos, I’m glad that you are looking forward to following our adventure. 🙂

  9. Congratulations Karen!! My aunt lives in West Palm. She grew up in Atlanta, spent most of her married life in Alexandria, Virginia but has called West Palm home for now 30 years. One would think that when she comes to visit us at Christmas that she had not ever lived knowing “winter”—she grouses and laments for the warmth and sun as she sits around bundled up cussing the grey barrenness of winter–yes, even here in north Georgia 🙂
So yes, you will certainly find contentment—trading apples, as it were, for oranges 🙂
This as it is currently 20 degrees as I type my reply. . . but at least, Thank God, the sun is shining —
    Happy moving–
    Julie

    1. Hi Julie, Your comment made me smile…yes, we will be trading our apples for a town that is known for growing oranges. We are heading to Florida for a construction meeting and it is supposed to be 4 when we leave in the morning so I will be grousing and lamenting about the cold like your aunt. Thank you for your wish.

  10. Have fun if you need any work done on your new beach place let me know my brother does some cool things 🙂

  11. I wish you all the best in your new home. 🙂 No doubt you will be sad to leave New England (and I will miss your New England posts!), but it will be lovely to spend winters in the sun and be closer to your family.

    1. Thank you for your wish Grace. It will be hard leaving New England as we do love it…but the winters are brutal. Hopefully my readers will enjoy our adventures on the back roads of Florida. 🙂

  12. You will be close to family ..that would be why I would do it.
I agree our winters are rough..
    But..
    I still love the seasons…
You have lived there before..and said never again..if you are going back it’s cause you REALLY want to:)
I am sure your home will be exquisite!
And your NH home has already had the barn sale..so it must be looking spot on for a quick sale!
    Good luck!
May all your dreams come true.

    1. Hi Monique, We will indeed miss the seasons of New England…even winter is beautiful although harsh. 🙂 Hopefully we won’t have too much trouble selling our home. I’ll be needing to hold more barn sales as we will be downsizing considerably. Thank you for your lovely wish, it is much appreciated.

  13. I always envy people who dare make such a bold move to a completely different place. That’s what I quite like about Americans, though, they’re more flexible and not as reluctant to move as we Germans are. Once you build or buy a house here, you basically settle for life; although that might have to do with the cost of buying or building, but still – it makes us seem pretty inflexible.

    1. Hi Kiki, I do think you have a point but I don’t think I would characterize Germans as being inflexible…having strong roots in one place is a good thing too. 😀

  14. A big change upcoming – how exciting, Karen! All the best wishes for your move to warmer shores! One of my mum’s best friends lives in Vero Beach, having moved there from NY a few years ago, and it’s a wonderful community.

    1. Thank you for your wish, Ksenia. Starting over in a new place will be a big change but one we are looking forward to. We think we will enjoy the lovely little community of Vero Beach…I’m glad to know that your mother’s friends enjoy living there. 🙂

  15. As a native of South Florida, I understand your sentiments (my parents were married in Vero Beach). And as Jimmy Buffet says, those changes in latitudes will indeed bring changes in attitudes. And for the better, I think! Congrats on the new house, Karen.

    1. Hi Vicki, Thank you for your wish. I knew you were from Florida but didn’t know about your parents being married in Vero Beach. I thought Jimmy Buffet’s song was perfect for this post as we will definitely have a different attitude, especially where winters are concerned. 😀

  16. Wow-that’s a big change! I wish you the best.
We’ve “lost” many of our neighbors to Florida over the past couple of years. Even hubby and I, who SWORE we’d be carried out of here in a pine box , are kind of “juggling” the idea of relocating in the future. I guess we should never say never!

    Enjoy the warmth, Karen!

    1. Hi Sue, The warm weather of Florida does have a strong pull on many of us that have to deal with harsh winters. Yes, I have decided that I should never say “never” again. Hopefully this will be a “happily ever after” move. 🙂

  17. This sounds like a wise plan. We even go to the point where the summers in Maine were either too beastly hot & humid, or too cold! Thus, we fled to Arizona! Enjoy the warmth!

    1. Hi David, So true about summers in Maine of late but it was hard to sell our little cottage there…the same is true of our home here in New Hampshire. We will take our memories of those two lovely places with us as we create new ones in Florida. Thank you for your lovely thoughts. 🙂

  18. Happy New Year Karen
I love the way you have made a positive decision for your new life, I would feel exactly the same all that snow would drive me crazy. I love to see it like we did at Christmas in Denmark with our son, but to clear the snow during the day to be able to get out then wake up to more snow. No . No No. As you already know the area and your family are only a few hrs away i would think it was easy to make up your minds. I wish you & your husband all the success that you have earned to make this choice. Bon Chance.

    1. Thank you Barbara, for your lovely comment and wish. Yes, a little snow is beautiful especially during the holiday season but most winters we average around 5 or 6 feet and sometimes a lot more. We think we will enjoy our new home and it will be nice to be closer to our children and grandchildren. 🙂

  19. As the seasons of our lives change, so do our needs and desires. I’m sure you will miss your apple orchard, but not the harshness of winter. I look forward to seeing your new “back yard” and appreciate its beauty. Being close to kids and grand kids would seal the deal for me, they grow up so fast, soak in every moment you can. All the best to you as you embark on this new adventure!

    1. Hi Judy, I appreciate your kind words…they are so true. I’m happy to know that you will enjoy following along on our new adventures in life, thank you!

  20. How very sensible, I hate winter. We cannot move far enough South in France to avoid winter, at least here in the West it is generally short. We would love to have a second home in the sun, but as pensioners it is out of the question and my husband has a foot problem which stops long flights any more. Good luck and enjoy.

    1. Hi Diane, I love the change of seasons in New England but each year that we get older, winters seem to get harsher. I know we will miss this beautiful region but I believe that we will enjoy life in our new home. Thank you for your nice comment and wish.

    1. Thank you Sylvia, I do think we will be happy. Boynton Beach is one of the towns we considered as one of our daughters lives in Delray Beach….we will be just a couple hours north. 😀

  21. I know you will miss your beautiful farmhouse and wonderful orchard, but a new adventure starts and you will have good memories. We have had a similar experience, and we are probably getting ready for yet another.

  22. How nice to be warm in winter….so many I know are headed south. I will never convince my husband to live winters in FL as he does not like FL, but maybe a month in a timeshare…we shall see. Have fun.

    1. Hi Donna, We have been spending a week in Florida each February for our anniversary and have enjoyed with warmth. Now we will get to enjoy the warmth full time. Years back I said I would never live in Florida again…I’ve learned to never say “never” again. Thank you for your wish, I do think we will have fun. 😀

      1. Karen: do you know from where the ‘007’ saying ‘never say never again’ comes from? ‘Twas ‘made up by Micheline Roquebrune, Sean Connery’s second wife, who could not have given a damn about movies when they first met: the common factor being golf of course! Am just finishing the latest and very analytical biography of his: fun to know 🙂 !

  23. Sensible decision and as I look out at the snow which has been too cold to shovel earlier due to the freeze warning until noon I wish I were in a position to move away from the cold as well. 🙂 Best of luck in your new home.

    1. Thank you Boleyn, Some of the moves we have made in our live were made with our heart, this one was made with our head…yes, I do think it is a sensible decision. 🙂 Thank you for your nice wish.

  24. Congrats on your new place! Vero Beach is lovely — good choice. And it makes sense to have something built to your specifications. I loved our time in Florida, although I now say I’ll never return (except to visit, of course!). But who knows what the future will bring? You’ve got the best of both worlds — a warmish place in the winter, and gorgeous place in the summer. Really happy for you.

    1. Hi John, You sound a bit like us, we said we would never return…at least to south Florida as it is just too congested. Vero seems like a lovely community…it will be our full time home as we have decided to sell our home in New Hampshire. I think we will be happy and appreciate your nice comment, thank you!

    1. Hi Agi, You are right…winters are tough here. You can’t be a wimp and live in New England, that is for sure. Thank you for your wish.

  25. Read your exciting news. Congrats on making a decision on moving south. The winters are harsh and this year the cold has taken hold and not letting go. We do not miss the cold, the ice, the snow, the shoveling or the scraping. You will miss the beautiful area known as New England but you can now schedule a trip here anytime you want. Best of Luck. Linda and John

    1. Thank you Linda and John, for your thoughts…they are much appreciated. You are right, we can always return to New England a visit during in pleasant weather. Say “hello” to your family for us.

  26. Hey snowbird – good analysis. I never want to live where it is winter again. We do get a few cold days down here but nothing like I have seen in the news this week but I do remember those winters up north. Enjoy your new house in the sunshine state.

    1. Hi Jovina, We have decided that being called a “snowbird” is a good thing if it means not having to deal with New Hampshire’s harsh weather anymore. 😀

  27. Hi Karen, happy new year! I know little or nothing about the places you’ve mentioned, other than your photos (and those from other blogs I follow in your part of the world)… but the thought of being able to have a summer home and a winter home, as well as being able to travel at whim, all appeal to me. Enjoy x

    1. Hi Liz, The city of Vero Beach is a community of about 17,000 located along the east coast of Florida. We originally thought of having a summer and winter home but this winter has made us decide to sell our home in New England and live permanently in Florida. It will be nice to then be able to travel anytime of the year and not worry about the weather. Thank your for your wish.

  28. Congrats on finding the perfect spot for your new home, but even better that you will be closer to family! If I were to find a nicer winter clime, I think it would have to be back to the southwest where most of the kids and grands are.

    1. Hi Liz, It seems each winter has developed its own character but none of them good. Florida has been beckoning us for the last couple of years and it has finally won out. I’m happy to know that you will be following along on our new adventures in a warmer climate…thank you!

    1. Hi Amanda, I’m happy to know that you like our decision…winters are tough in New England and we are looking forward to an easier lifestyle. 🙂

    1. Thank you for your visit and wish, Kathleen. Our full time home will be in Florida but we will go back to visit New England and our friends there…it is just that we will be staying in hotels, inns or with friends in the area.

    1. Hi Debra, We are looking forward to the warmer climate in Florida. It will make our travels to Europe all the nicer when we visit in the fall and winter for the change of seasons we will then experience. 🙂

  29. I spent the last three weeks here in Germany where it is cold and dark. I can’t wait to get back to sunny California. Good luck with your new home.

    1. Hi Gerlinde, I know being in Germany this time was unplanned. I’m so sorry that you lost your mother. Thank goodness that you had just spent time with her but such a loss for you and your family. I know you will be happy to return to your warm California home. Thank you for your nice wish. 🙂

      1. Thank you Karen for your kind words. My mom was almost 92 , she only had to suffer for a day after she fell and broke her hip. I will miss her.

    1. Hi Sandra, We are looking forward to the different lifestyle…the beaches truly are beautiful in Vero. We are happy that we will be a lot closer to our family. I’ll definitely be sharing are new house with everyone. It will be about as opposite from our New England home as you can get. 🙂

    1. Thank you for your wish, Helen. As much as we loved all our years in New England and will miss it, we think we are making the right decision. 🙂

  30. I can completely understand why you are leaving that winter weather! I grew up in Wisconsin and know all about the cold. Luckily I escaped ages ago and now enjoy South Carolina. We still get a mild winter which is fine and the spring is amazing, a season that was only one weekend in Wisconsin! Enjoy the move and warmer weather.

    1. Hi Gretchen, Your comment made me smile. It seems that there are many of my readers who have experienced similar winter and have made the move to a warmer climate. Thank you for your wish. 🙂

  31. When you sold your beautiful Maine cottage I must admit my nose began to twitch 🙂 ! Now I know why!! Always thought of you two as the quintessential New England couple but I take your point as I ‘complain’ when at odd times we hit -2 C!! As some have said you are not exactly going into the unknown and I do sincerely hope that bot the move and the following will be very happiness-making for you . . .

    1. Hi Eha, My husband and I have enjoyed our many years in New England. It is a beautiful part of our country but winters are long and cold. New adventures are awaiting us in a warmer climate in the near future. I appreciate your wish, thank you.

  32. Good for you, Karen. This is a really good plan and it sounds like it’s going to cover all the bases. I love that you will be near your kids and grandchildren. There are so many reasons why I could move to the lake in Michingan or down to Asheville, but my kids keep me rooted here.

    Best wishes!

    Jane x

  33. Happy New Year Karen! Wow, New England & New Hampshire will miss you! I hope you keep your blog going, I’m sure your adventures will be exciting to follow! All the best to you and your husband!

I agree, it has been miserably cold – and it continues. School was canceled on Thursday, while it was nice to stay home, it adds a day in June 😦

    Keep warm!

    1. Hi Mary, I will absolutely keep posting on Back Road Journal. My cooking and travels may be a little different because of the change in latitudes but I hope all my readers will continue to follow along. There are many back roads yet to discover in my life that I would like to share. 😀

      1. My thought for today reminds me that there us always an adventure waiting for us! “My heart is warm with the friends I make,
And better friends I’ll not be knowing,
        Yet there isn’t a train I wouldn’t take,
        No matter where it’s going.”
Edna St. Vincent Millay, The Selected Poetry

  34. I moved to Australia from Central Florida and visited Vero Beach several times a year. I love that place. You will miss New England but you’ll be happier getting out every day. Best of luck with the new build and I hope it makes you very happy. Will we get to share in the building photos?? 🙂

    1. Hi Maureen, First of all, I’m happy to know that you are familiar with Vero Beach and know why we decided to choose it for our next adventure. You are right about being happier as I can’t tell you how often I don’t go out in the winter because of either snow on the ground or the prediction of a storm that keeps us from traveling. We will truly miss all the wonderful things that New England offers but it does present its challenges. I will definitely share the building process…thank you for wanting to follow along.

  35. I’m so excited for you, Karen. 🙂 After transplanting to Australia and escaping the harsh winters of Canada and northern Washington, I heartily applaud your decision to move. 🙂 Sunshine and warmth are wonderful, wonderful things. 🙂

    1. Thank you Krista, for your lovely thoughts. We do think that we are making a decision that we will enjoy for the years and adventures that lie ahead. You are so right about sunshine and warmth. 😀

  36. You can always trust Jimmy Buffet’s views on life with changes in latitude, changes in attitude. Your lot and builder sound perfect and Vero is such a lovely location. We said we’d never live in Florida again and here were are. I made my husband promise me I would never be cold again. I know you’ll hate to sell your beautiful early American home and I would feel exactly the same. We’ve adapted the phrase “been there, done that” and it seems to help us adjust, especially when we get an avalanche of questions about why we’re moving or changing again. Again, I’m so please for you Karen and remember, you can always go back and visit.
    Sam

    1. Hi Sam, I can so relate to your entire comment. I never thought I would be writing this post about returning to Florida as New England was everything that I thought we would want in life but life does change and so does what makes us happy. Oh yes,” been there, done that”, does influence what comes next as life progresses. You are right, we can return to visit the places we love, so thank you for your lovely thoughts. 😀

  37. Wow, Karen, your life is full of surprising change. Having just returned from Maine and its subzero temps, I know why you want some relief from winter. A little bit definitely goes a long way. When you relocate you will have new recipes to try and write about. I’ll be waiting for Karen’s conch fritters! If you ever hunger for a return to Maine, I know a place where you will be welcome!

    1. Hi Linda, Our life really has been full of changes lately. You are right, I’ll have to create some new recipes with ingredients that haven’t been readily available in our rural area of New Hampshire once we are living in Florida. As to a place to stay in Maine, the one you speak of is special…thank you!

    1. Hi Angie, I know we will miss New England but moving south to a warmer climate will definitely have its advantages. We are looking forward to new adventures and appreciate your wish, thank you.

  38. You have such a beautiful home in New Hampshire that I’m sure it will be hard to leave but living close to children and grandchildren will be wonderful not to mention the lovely temperatures you will enjoy while it’s freezing in the north. Congrats on taking the plunge to relocate!

    1. Thank you for your kind words Susan about our home and our move. I’ve had problems with my comments disappearing so I apologize that it has taken so long to reply.

  39. Happy New Year, Karen! I don’t live in a cold region (we rarely even see snow here), but the older I am the more I dream of warmer climate to live in… I wish I had 15°C in the winter as they do in some southern European regions… I’m looking forward to reading about your life in the warm climate!

    1. Thank you Sissi, for your wish. I’m happy to know that you will enjoy following along on our new adventure. I’m sorry to have taken so long to get back to you but my replies have been disappearing.

  40. Will have to Google Vero Beach. I don’t blame you for moving south. Even though winter’s aren’t exactly harsh here, compared to where you are, I would far prefer to live on the Med! Wishing you both well for the impending move!

    1. Hi Johnny, My replies have been disappearing…sorry for this delay in thanking you. Vero Beach is located on the Atlantic coast of Florida just over an hour north of West Palm Beach, two hours north of Ft. Lauderdale.

      1. I’ve been having problems with the new comments button within the black bar. I still have to go into the comments page to find things. Yes, I Googled. I’ve never been to Florida. It’s a shame I didn’t head there when I visited the States. Well, so many places to choose from! Very spoilt for choice.

  41. You have such a beautiful home that I know it will be a wrench to leave it but like you say, everything has its season and it seems that with your children and grandchildren living in Florida, that you are being called there for quite a few reasons. Best wishes in selling your home and settling into life on Vero Beach xx

    1. Hi Charlie, My replies have been disappearing so I’m sorry for this delay. Thank you for your lovely comment and wish, it is much appreciated. Hopefully when the snow melts, we can find a buyer for our home and make our move to Florida.

    1. Hi Francesca, I appreciate your wish…yes, after this winter, I think we all would like a place with milder weather. I’m sorry for the delay in answering, my replies have been disappearing.

  42. New year, new adventures! You must be quite excited with such changes. I wish you good luck and will look forward to reading the change in latitudes evolution. 🙂

    1. Hi Didi, Yes, we are excited and looking forward to the new adventures that lie ahead. Thank you for your wish and I’m to happy to know that you will be following along. I apologize for not answering sooner but I’ve had a problem with comments disappearing.

    1. Hi Debbie, This has been a decision a long time in the making. Sorry to have taken so long in answering, I’ve had a problem with comments disappearing.

  43. Whoa, nice change Karen. Since I have a friend who was in a similar situation as yours with 2 houses, both in New England, I was sort of guessing that you might see the summer house to buy a house somewhere warm for the winter. My friend’s been debating which home to sell – his primary is on the ocean in Saco and was bought & renovating long ago so the profits on that house would be phenomenal whereas the condo he has in Boston is on the waterfront but was bought at the height of the market & would probably be lucky to break even. So he’s probably going to wait but in the meantime is looking at Florida.
What I didn’t see coming was you selling the Maine house! I’ve never been to Vero beach but the pictures look lovely and your description sounds perfect for the sort of lifestyle you & your husband lead. I think a gated community is the easiest way to go if someone wants to spend time traveling and not worry while they’re away. I’m picturing the type of place that I would love to move to & think I’d have to be near the ocean, have neighbors but not on top of me, be within walking distance of good restaurants & interesting shopping. It sounds as if you’ve found my ideal place! Congratulations.

    1. Hi Diane, I apologize for not answering sooner but I’ve had a problem with comments disappearing. We thought seriously of buying a home in Florida for winter and keeping the cottage in Maine for summer. Opening and closing the cottage was a huge job and we would have had to depend on others to do it for just the few months each summer.. Our home in Vero has a lot of what you would enjoy as it is 5 minutes from the ocean as well as downtown.

  44. What an exciting adventure to look forward to in the next chapter of your life! I know it must be a hard decision to leave your home and all you’ve built through the years. My husband and I too have been thinking we may want to move someplace where we can enjoy our next “chapter” now that our kids have started their own lives. I wish you nothing but the best and can’t wait to see all the beautiful pics of the new place and all the new cuisine you will be tasting in Florida!

    1. Thank you for your lovely wish, Jan. I’m sorry for not answering sooner but I’ve had a problem with comments disappearing. It was not an easy decision to make but we are really looking to our move. After this winter, we are so happy we will be heading south for an easier life. 😀

    1. Hi Linda, I apologize for not answering sooner but I’ve had a problem with comments disappearing. Thank you for your wish. There will certainly be lots of new roads to discover and share with my readers, I hope you will enjoy them.

  45. Boy, that really is a change Karen! I’ve always wanted to see the snow and winters in New England, but am not sure I would like it on a continuous basis. I know it’s got to be terribly hard to leave your farm. Best of luck to you in the transition. I love the ocean, so it seems like a grand plan to me! 😉

    1. Hi Betsy, I’ve had a problem with my comments so I’m late in replying. Our move to Florida later this year will be a big change for us. After all the snow and cold of this winter, we know we have made the correct decision. Thank you for your wish, it is much appreciated.

    1. Hi Cheri, We are looking forward to our new adventures…thanks. I apologize for not answering sooner but I’ve had a problem with comments disappearing.

  46. That’s exciting news Karen. I wish you and your husband much happiness in your new home and I hope you will share some images of it when it’s finished. In the meantime good luck with the build. 😉

    1. Thank you B, for your wish. I will indeed be sharing photos as our new home is built and decorated. Sorry it took so long to answer this comment, I’ve had problems with my replies disappearing.

    1. The cold temps have been a problem for everyone this winter, Kay. I know we are all looking forward to spring. Sorry this response was late, my comments have been disappearing into thin air it seems.

  47. Oh my goodness, you’re moving to Florida?! I’ll buy your New Hampshire house! hehe. Seriously tho, I wish I could live there. Florida will certainly be a change. My parents moved there not too long ago. They live in Jupiter, not too far from where you’ll be. I’m sure your new house will be stunning and I can’t wait to see pics!

    1. Hi Amy, I know you have always enjoyed the photos of our New Hampshire home, hopefully we will find a buyer who loves it as well. We drive through Jupiter each time we are in Florida as we fly in and out of West Palm Beach…Jupiter is a nice town. Moving to Florida will be a big change but one we think we will enjoy. I apologize for not answering sooner but I’ve had a problem with comments disappearing.

    1. Hi Liz, We are looking forward to the new adventure that lies ahead. There has been a glitch with my comments disappearing so I’m sorry it has taken so long to reply.

  48. Congratulations Karen! What a big move!!! First Maine and now New Hampshire. While I will very much miss the beautiful and seasonal photos of your New England life, I look forward to the glimpse of blue skies and green landscape during our dreary winter months. Mike’s parents made the move last summer and they couldn’t be happier – especially this time of year. Best of luck in the move and house building process. I look forward to reading the updates. Happy new year!

    1. Hi Kristy, There has been a glitch with my comments disappearing so I’m sorry I have taken so long to reply. I appreciate your wish and I’m happy you are looking forward to following along on our new adventure. I do know how you have enjoyed my posts on our life both in Maine and New Hampshire. It will be hard leaving New England but after this winter, we know we have made a good decision.

  49. LOL, I’m hysterical laughing right at the moment, Karen. Congratulations on deciding to make such a huge move. I can’t say that I blame you. As a matter of fact, I have a real estate working on finding property for me not far from Vero Beach, lol…I’m not sure about the move yet but I figure why not give it a lookie:) I may just buy an RV.

Good Luck, Karen…Keep us posted and thanks for sharing…

    1. Hi Louise, I’m sorry it has taken a long time to answer your comment…I’ve had a glitch and comments have been disappearing. I can’t wait to find out if you will be moving in the same area. 😀

    1. Hi Melanie, Thank you for your visit and wish. I’m sorry it has taken so long to answer but I’ve had a problem with my comments disappearing.

    1. Hi Jessica, We are definitely looking forward to our move. Warm sunshine and being close to our children and grandchildren will be an enjoyable experience. Pardon the lateness in answering your comment. There has been a glitch and my comments keep disappearing.

    1. I must apologize David for not replying to your lovely wish sooner, but thank you. I’ve had a glitch and my comments have been disappearing.

    1. I’m sorry it has taken so long to answer, Fae. I’ve had a problem with the comments disappearing. It will be a real relief to know that we can travel and not have to worry about our home in bad weather. Thank you for your wish.

    1. Hi Sophie, It will be nice to live in a milder climate…thanks. Sorry it has taken a while to answer, there has been a glitch with my comments going through.

    1. Hi Cathy, I’ve had a glitch and my answers to comments weren’t going through. It really will be nice to be close to our children and grandchildren. Adding the warm weather will make it all the nicer.

  50. Wow Karen that’s great. I can imagine the desire for warmth. I have Miami on my phone along with some other cities around the country- just for fun. It’s amazing how hot it is there right now. And who knows maybe we’ll cross paths some day. I grew up going to Vero for Mother’s Day. Every year we stayed at the Driftwood hotel. It’s still there. And my sister is in Ft Pierce (not my favorite town but the beaches are beautiful) and we love a little drive down to Vero.
So good luck with the new chapter. What’s your timeline?

    1. I’ve had a glitch with my answers to comments not going through, Wendy…sorry for this delay. I know right where the Driftwood hotel is, such a part of Vero Beach’s history. I do hope we will get a chance to meet someday, that would be wonderful. 😀

    1. Thank you Carolyn, I’m glad that you will enjoy following along when we start our new adventure. Sorry for the lateness in answering this comment, I’ve had a glitch with my comments.

  51. Huge devisions. I will miss your house too! Nice idea to have your new home built to your design and likes. Good luck with it all and all the best for 2015 to you.

      1. Thank you Flippen, my comments haven’t been going through, but I appreciate your wish. It was a big decision but we think it is a good one even though we will miss our New England home.

    1. Hi Lindy, Sorry for the lateness in answering your comment…there has been a glitch and my comments are disappearing. Thank you for your wish, we will be very happy when this winter is behind us and we can move to the warmth of Vero Beach. Stay warm.

  52. Congratulations Karen, so nice to have the warmth to look forward to. So many of our friends have purchased homes in the warmer states. I look forward to see your take on the Florida decor in your new home.

    1. Hi Eva, Sorry for the lateness in this reply…for some reason my comments have been disappearing. We are looking forward to our new home and yes the decor will be very different from our home in New England. I’ll definitely be sharing.

  53. congratulations on your new location and new home! My nephew got married in Vero Beach a couple of years ago. I didn’t get to go but my husband went and came back with lots of pictures and video that showed just what a beautiful place it is. I’m envious :), but very happy for you!!!

    1. Hi MJ, I’ve been having a problem with my comments disappearing. Thank you for your wish…it is much appreciated. We feel in love with Vero Beach when our son lived there a few years ago…it is a lovely small but cosmopolitan beach town.

  54. Congratulations on your new adventure and home purchase my friend! As I’m getting older, I definitely am feeling the cold more and more as well. Good luck, bon voyage and *cheers my amazing friend* ♥

    1. Hi Didi, I’ve had a problems with my comments disappearing. Thank you for your wish, we are looking forward to our move especially after this horrible winter.

  55. wonderful change is afoot for you in 2015. I have always heard that Vero Beach is lovely. like you, we are in the process of downsizing, although we will stay in Nashville. We are planning to build a smaller home that better suits us too. wishing you success in the move!

    1. Hi Nancy, Downsizing should make life easier for all of us…I’ll be thinking of you as we work on the big move. We are looking forward to life in Vero Beach but dreading getting rid of treasures when we start to pack. 🙂

  56. Congratulations on this decision, Karen! The photo is absolutely stunning – who wouldn’t want to wake up to that on a winter morning? As I write this, a snowstorm is swirling outside the windows, and I’m wondering how much digging will be necessary tomorrow morning, and whether I will need to cancel my plans with the realtor to view new homes. Alas, they are right here in the same cold and snowy (for now) place. Much as I would like to venture to warmer climes (maybe Vancouver or Victoria, to stay in Canada), I don’t think I could bring myself to leave my children and grandchildren right now. So, I’m bound to this winter weather for now. Looking forward to hearing more about your big move!

    1. Hi Marlene, We are looking forward to our move for several reason. As you say, children and grandchildren play a part in where we choose to live and it will be nice to be close to where ours live again. The other thing is the winters…as you say they can be hard living where we both do. We had 3 ft of snow last Tuesday and now are supposed to get another 10 to 18 inches. I’ll definitely be sharing more about our move. Thank you for your congratulations. 🙂

  57. How exciting – somehow I have missed all of your news. (I’ve been hibernating here for over a month, and have been ever so out of touch.) I wish you the best of luck with this move. IT sounds like the perfect thing for you.

    1. Hi Adri, I’ve been missing from action for a little while myself as we have been checking on the progress of our new home. Thank you for your wish…we are looking forward to our move later this year.
