What A Winter…four snowstorms in less than a month! Thank goodness, that my husband and I could get away for a couple of weeks. Each February, weary of the winter cold and snow, we head south to celebrate our anniversary in the warmth of the Florida sunshine instead of the bitter cold and snow of New Hampshire. After a blizzard dumped three feet of snow on the ground at the end of January, we were very happy to be able make our annual escape to Florida.

As usual, we had a lovely anniversary. We also got to spend time with our children and grandchildren in south Florida before heading up the coast to check on the progress of our new home being built in Vero Beach. After two weeks of warm weather and delicious food, it was time to pack our bags and fly back home.
When traveling in the winter, we always keep track of the weather up north. Just before checking out of our hotel in Vero Beach and heading to the airport in West Palm Beach on Valentine’s day, I decided to check with our airline and it is a good thing I did. The fourth snowstorm in less than a month was heading toward New England. Snow and the threat of dangerously high winds caused the airlines to cancel hundreds of flights in and out of Logan Airport, the Boston Transit Authority shut down all their trains and buses, and people were advised to stay off the snowy roads because of the impending blizzard. Our hotel in Vero could only extend our stay for one night. Luckily, we were able to get a room at one of the airport hotels in West Palm Beach for an additional three days until we could fly home. Needless to say, we didn’t get home for a romantic Valentine’s dinner but we did get to enjoy warm weather for an extra four days.
I’m sure that most of my readers have seen what Boston looks like on your local or world news. Unfortunately, it is the same here in New Hampshire. All I can say is, if every winter was like what we are having this year, all New Englanders might just call it quits and move south. After you see my photos, I think you might see why we will be doing exactly that, later this year.
We are lucky to have wonderful friends who look after our home when we travel. After each punishing snowstorm that occurred while we were gone, our drive was plowed and our walk shoveled. Our porch roof had to be shoveled off for a second time in less than a month as snow piled so high, it entirely covered the front windows on the second floor of our home. Good friends are priceless and we are thankful for their help when needed.
One thing that none of us knew was that while we were gone, one of our home’s thermostats stopping working because of a bad battery. The result caused a pipe in my potting shed to freeze. Wednesday, as the weather warmed above freezing, the frozen pipe melted. We were greeted by the sound of water flowing down into the basement when we arrived home. Thank goodness, we only had about an inch of water in part of our basement. The water in the basement has now been cleaned up, fans are blowing to dry everything up and life can return to normal.
By normal, I mean another day of bone chilling temperatures, staring out the window at a black and white world as snow continues to fall (95 inches have already fallen this winter), plowing and shoveling snow. We are quickly running out of places to put the snow and this is only the middle of February…what a winter.
We thought of ourselves as hardy souls when we decided to leave Florida twenty years ago and move to New Hampshire. Most people who live here are but after this winter, we are so happy that we have decided to move back south. Perhaps in future years, we will come back to New Hampshire but I can guarantee it won’t be in the winter.

I really feel for you! I don’t like winter and cold. It’s been fairly mild here in London over the winter; cold but little snow. People get excited by snow but it may look pretty in the morning but in a city it only causes chaos. I’m so pleased to notice the days getting longer here and little signs of spring on its way. How nice for you to have your move south to look forward to.
Thanks for your thoughts, Kay. This morning it is a balmy 5 degrees Fahrenheit but feels like -12 degrees with the wind chill factor. It will warm up a little before heading down to -3 tonight. They are predicting 6 more inches of snow and then perhaps some freezing rain over the weekend. Snow is pretty but I’m counting the days until it all melts. Looking forward to the move keeps me going right now. 🙂

Hi Vicki, It is an impressive amount of snow and it is lovely with the sun comes out and makes it sparkle. Mother Nature does a good job of making our home look pretty but I think she has gone overboard this winter. 🙂
So much snow! I’m glad y’all were able to get some warm sunshine and experienced enough travelers to check the forecast! My husband and I learned that lesson the hard way once and will hopefully remember to do so from now on.
Hi Plumdirt, Too much snow as far as we are concerned. 🙂 We were thrilled to be able to enjoy a couple weeks away in the warmth. Thank goodness I was able to find us hotel rooms and get us on a flight later in the week. When we flew home, the airport was mobbed with people still trying to fly to their destinations.
Shut down airports are an amazing slice of humans at their very best (sometimes) or their very worst (most times.) I have thought (while stuck in a shut down airport) they should make a movie about it. Not too arty, but definitely not Hollywood. I’d watch it.

I have only had 6″ snow here in central VA, yet the daily brutal cold with no thaw is horrid. Trying to keep the wild birds fed and watered, as Mother Nature is not done with us yet!

Hi Diane, When winter started out, I thought it might be an easy one but nature is giving us a winter that will be talked about for years. We were so lucky to catch the leak…disaster averted is right. 😀 The house should be completed around the first of May. The For Sale sign will go up whenever the snow melts but we won’t move until after it is sold.
A lot to look forward to! How did your barn/antique sale go? Will you need to downsize more for the FLA move? Décor will probably change, yes?
The barn sales went well and I sold almost everything from our summer home in Maine. Yes, the decor will change on the Florida home. As soon as the weather turns warm, I’ll start new sales with antiques and furniture from this home.

As a transplant from California, i never thought that I would think the thrill of New England is gone, but this sentiment has surfaced several times this month! Enjoy your new warm home!
Hi Susan, I think most New Englanders are feeling the same this year…what a winter we are having. We can wait until our home is sold and we can move south to our new home being built in Florida. I know we are all looking forward to spring and it’s warmer days.
It is even cold here in Florida this morning Karen. But nothing like what you have experienced. I can’t stand the bitter cold anymore and admire the hardy souls who live in New England. You are making a smart move.
Hi Penny, It got down to 4l degrees while we were in Vero Beach. You only needed a light jacket at night and my husband said that is the coldest he ever wants to feel again. Even New Englanders who have lived here their entire life are complaining about this relentless winter. We truly think we have made the right decision to move back south.
Karen – my first winter in Kittery was the 1995-96 winter to which all winters are now measured. In 2005 we moved to Tucson and now look back and realize – good decision! (Not that we doubted it then…) You home looks beautiful ion the snow – and I am glad you have good plowman, and good friends to shovel your roof! Stay warm and cosy – make lots of soups!
Hi David, We were here in New Hampshire during the winter of ’95-’96 and it was a rough one. The way this one is going, it will be talked about for years as well. It appears that lots of people who live up north are moving south to warmer weather…winters are hard. Yes, soups help to comfort and keep you warm. Thank you for your thoughts.
Brrr!!! As you know, I’m originally from Ohio and especially this winter, I have absolutely no desire to return! As pretty as your pictures look and as much as snuggling in front of a blazing fire sounds, Florida is my home! We are having some cold weather as you probably felt in Vero but for us we love the change! Glad to see you are moving South!!
Hi Linda, We have met lots of people from Ohio who now make Florida at least their winter home if not a permanent one. I’m glad you enjoyed the photos and as you say, the snow is beautiful but we are getting way to much this winter. I’m looking forward to those winter days in Vero when all I’ll need is a light sweater instead of looking like the Michelin man when I bundle up to go out. 😀

Hi Lily, I like your sweet thoughts and you are right, snow is indeed beautiful to look at for a little while. Trying to deal with bone chilling cold, high winds and snow more than waist high while going about your daily life is hard though. I think everyone in New England is missing summer terribly and counting the days until we can see green shoots making their way through the melting snow. 🙂

As you know we have been looking at possibly moving to New England and after this year, husband said………….hmmmmmmm perhaps we just go rent a house in the summer……..hahahah. Hi Tin Man, Thank you for your wish and kind thoughts. I think New England is one of the prettiest places imaginable. The charming villages are something we all read about in books and poems or see in the movies but winter is harsh. You can rent a little house or cottage in a different spot in New England each year during the summer or fall months and they will be magical…just like your dreams. You can then hand the keys back when you leave and not have to deal with winter. I believe your husband’s thinking is leaning in the right direction. 🙂
Thank you Karen. Since I was a child I have been in love with New England and have always been more at home there. The harsh climate, land and people of Texas have never fit well for me, although I am living where my family has chosen since 1884 when the immigrated to this place; however, then it was part of Mexico and the bond between the Germans and Mexicans is historic……….and then came along the Americans. Oh well, I shall look forward to my trek to my true homeland, if only once a year for a short time!
One last winter blast for y’all before you move south, eh? Wow! That’s a lot of snow. Reminds me of our first winter on Bull Run Mountain, but we only had about 30″ from an accumulations of a few snows that didn’t melt.

Hi Sylvia, We were so happy to escape the snow for a little while and visit Florida. Yes, it was cooler than normal most days and we had a little rain but who could complain after what we are having up north. We are excited about our upcoming move and who knows…perhaps we will have the chance to meet someday.

It has been a crazy Northeast winter, and while I would like to see some of the snow and ice and interesting phenomenon on the water I’m not unhappy to be here in Houston.New England does have its charm, but I’m not sure I’m hardy enough to stand more than a few days of the winter. I just have my fingers crossed that all is well at our house.
Hi Linda, Only few days of winter sounds perfect. 🙂 I’ve thought about you often this winter. When we first started our life in New England, we had a home to return to each winter in Florida. We always kept our fingers crossed that when we returned each summer, we would find no winter damage to the house. Hopefully your beautiful home in Maine will be just fine in your absence over the winter.

Karen, Your photos are so beautiful, but I do not miss the cold. I remember living back in the Midwest and when a snow storm came through they had to call the National Guard to dig me out, at that time we had horses, so it was not easy taking care of the animals. I am pretty wimpy these days and I could not deal with the harshness that the cold brings.

Bitter cold here..we have snow..it looks like you..but it has come on regularly and gradually..It’s the cccoooold! At least the sun shines on most days.

Gives me time to do the indoor things I like..
However if our kids moved somewhere else..I would want to folow:) WE just cannot move outside of Canada really because of medicare etc..and our exchange right now..Oy.

Hi Monique, We are both living in similar circumstances with this cold weather…I’m dreading going out today to restock my kitchen. Yes our new house is very Florida looking in style with an open concept design inside. We will only be able to bring a few pieces of our current furniture as the house is much smaller than our New Hampshire home so it will be a little challenging to decorate. Well, at least it looks as though you have been prepared. As someone who grew up in the Rockies, I love snow, but I’m now of an age that I love it better when I’m sitting in front of a roaring fire, looking out the window.
Hi Darryl, We are prepared to handle the snow with my husband’s truck and plow and our tractor with its bucket loader. Thankfully we also have good friends to help when we are not here. I’m with you though, shoveling snow is something I’d rather not do too often…sitting in front of a warming fire is much nicer. 🙂

This winter has been a challenge because of so much snow in such a short period of time. We are not even going to attempt to show our home to prospective buyers until the snow melts. I’m really hoping a buyer can see the orchard in spring when the apple trees are in bloom and fall in love with our place like we did. 🙂

This has been an exceptionally hard winter for New England with so much snow over a short period of time. I think FL would be great about now since we have the same weather as you are showing in NH. I love snow and our winter was mild after the record November blizzard, but then the end of January let loose. You have wonderful FL images and that is the place to be. When in Maui this year, I did the same thing, following the snow, wind and frigid weather seen at home – all with a slight smile on my face. Wearing shorts was wonderful. I do have to admit though, skiing in shorts is something we did when I was younger. It always made the news so it was fun to play off the sunny days in the Utah snow.
Hi Donna, It was nice to get away from the snow and cold just as you did. Now it is back to the real world…shoveling snow later today but only 3 additional inches from over night.
We’ve had very cold weather in Toronto, but New England has definitely beat us in the snow department. I think we’re all counting down the days until spring. Your NH home is gorgeous, but I can see why Florida beckons!

Sounds like you’ve made the right decision. We moved from Wisconsin to North Carolina 34 years ago and have never regretted it. The summers are quite lovely but give me NC any day! Hope you withstand the rest of the winter. Spring is right around the corner!
Hi Chris, We do think we have made the right decision to move south. As you say, summer is lovely in New England but the winters can be brutal. I know we are all looking forward to spring…even your area has had bad weather.
My daughter lives in Tampa. When I told her I was planning on coming down for a visit in February she told me that she wanted to come home! While we haven’t had it as bad as you folks in New England, western Pennsylvania is still pretty miserable this year. Althoughshe hasn’t been “home” in a couple years, this ain’t the year. (Although she told me it was 34 this morning there 😦 We had a bone chilling -17 this morning. If it weren’t for the horses, I would not have left the house at all! Your home looks beautiful, any season. Bet your new home will be, too.

I keep seeing one storm after another for the northeast on the weather report. Lucky you have a getaway and hope the airplane stays on schedule. Some of that cold weather has dipped down to us here on the Gulf Coast but no snow and back to the 70’s tomorrow..
Hi Jovina, We were lucky to get out just before one snowstorm but our return was delayed by another blizzard…in this case, it wasn’t a bad thing to spend extra days in the warm Florida weather.
Woah I can’t imagine how cold that must be. We get snow some years, but lucky to get 2 inches. Snow creates Beautiful pictures but the reality is far from that. Keep warm!

-12F? I make that -24C. I can’t even imagine what that’s like! The coldest cities I’ve been to were Berlin and Prague, temperatures in both of them around -12C or 10F the times I went there. And I thought the weather here last month, that felt like -4 or 24, was bad enough! Actually, for where I live that’s unbelievably cold for an entire month in winter. We haven’t had NEAR that much snow but it’s pretty miserable here. I’d rather be in Florida. My SIL invited me to be her guest at their time share in Florida for the 2nd week in March. I turned her down and almost regret it but I need to work. (sigh)

Wow. That’s a lot of snow. Looks like our winter from last year. February has turned bitter cold after a mostly mild winter to date – but we have not had an unusual amount of snow.

Hi Angie, Our home in Florida is still under construction and won’t be finished for a couple more months. As soon as the snow melts, we will put our home in New Hampshire up for sale and move once it is sold. I’m sure that I will miss celebrating Christmas without a little snow on the ground but not the many feet we have over the course of our New England winters. 🙂

Hubby and I NEVER thought we would want to leave our home, but lately we have been mulling over a change as well.
Our problem is that we LOVE the cool summers here ,….and even the snowy winters….just not so LONG of a winter. I’d love for it to end in March, unfortunately, the past few springs have given us snow right in to May. That’s a bit much!

Winters seem to be colder and longer…or is it that as each year passes, we notice them more. 🙂 I’ve seen your -24 degree nighttime temps and that alone would have you thinking that way. We did enjoy our trip south and are very happy with the progress on our new house.
Hi Karen, you are having more of a winter than what we are having here in Finland…two years in a row! We had a short and sweet “real” winter but now during the past couple of days it is only raining and gray and making all of the roads slick with a layer of ice and water on top. Your Florida vacay looked like a dream! and your new home beautiful…but I must say that your old home is very lovely. Will it be hard to leave it behind? Next week I head to Turkey with a friend to enjoy the warmth of their spring. Can’t wait to photograph and find the story of their country.

Any normal person would rather be in Florida, especially after this long winter. Michigan has missed many of the big storms but it is very cold now. My brother lives on the Big Island and a sister lives in Florida – I am doing something wrong here 🙂

Hi Gisela, February has always been our time to escape the snow and cold for a little while…we left right after the first blizzard dumped almost three feet of snow on the ground and we come back to lots more. I think we are all looking forward to spring and the warmth that will melt the snow. Thank you for your visit.

Karen, no doubt in my mind you are grateful you made the decision to move south! We’ve had quite a contrasting winter here in the PNW. Very mild. It’s been in the 50s and 60s for about a month! Crocuses are blooming a month early already and trees are starting to bloom. I am afraid for all the trees and vegetation if winter really does decide to come back! My sister in Massachusetts is hiring people to get the (7ft and counting) crazy snow off of her roof while I am wondering if my peach tree is perhaps blooming a bit too soon… Stay safe where ever you “winter”!
Hi Rachel, Everyone is having to get the snow off their roofs this year. We have had the porch done twice but our two story roof is too steep to be safely shoveled. Thank you for your wish, we will be “wintering” in New Hampshire this year but this will be the last. 🙂 It sounds like you a having a very mild Texas winter, hopefully you don’t get a hard freeze on your peach tree.
Wow! Karen…what a winter! I have heard about snowstorms up in the north of the country but 3 feet of snow is a lot. Leaving the house, which seems to be something so simple, it becomes something quite complicated there. I am more a beach person. I hope your house in Florida is ready soon so you can escape in the winter time.
Thank you for your wish Denise, our house should be finished in April or May. This should be our last winter dealing with snow. You are correct, leaving the house to run errands at this time of the year can be a real challenge.
95 inches? That is just plain crazy. We’re experiencing the bitter cold temps but not the snowfall—it’s still a winter I’d be happy to forget. Glad you enjoyed a little warmth in the sun!!
Crazy is right Liz. We are accustomed to lots of snow but it doesn’t usually come so often and with so much during each storm. We throughly enjoyed the warmth of the sun on our trip to Florida…thanks.

Zero degrees here this morning, and snowing again right now. We have about 4 ft on the ground. Pipes freezing all over the place, the main water line froze Thurs., so people were without water for 5 hours. I never wanted to go to FL , I thought it was wussy to run from winter. I have changed my mind. I would like to go for Feb., but I couldn’t stand it in summer. Plus my 5 gkids are here and I would miss them. Your yellow house looks so pretty in the snow!

Oh Kathleen…isn’t this a terrible winter. We have sun today but it is so cold outside that even the icicles aren’t dripping. No doubt summer in Florida will be hot but being 5 minutes away from the ocean, we should get cooling breezes. Our children and grandchildren all live in Florida and will only be a two hour drive south. Thank you for your compliment on our home and your wish. Let’s hope for a gradual spring warmup so all this snow will slowly melt without flooding.
Glad you had a good trip….we average 120-140 inches of snow a yr here but it has been colder than average this winter keeping 5 ft of snow on the ground with another foot falling today.

Oh my stars! I started to say that you came home too early with all that snow still on the ground but after reading about your thermostat and the busted pipe – I would say you made it home just in time! Your new home is coming along swimmingly and just think – this time next year you will be in that home full time and not have to worry about all that snow!

I know this is the last thing you want to hear, but the snow is so pretty! I rarely get to see snow these days, so I admire it from a distance. How exciting to be moving back south, especially after this harsh winter!
We have way more snow than usual Lisa, but I do have to agree with you and all my readers…it is pretty. Living in our rural area, it stays pristine and white except for the occasional dried leave take skips across its surface. We are excited about are move…we will put our home up for sale as soon as the snow melts.

We are having a rather snowfree winter in these parts and we do miss it a bit but certainly not as much as wanting to have that much snow all around us! Hi Andrea, I think we all love a little snow…especially around the Christmas holidays. I also think most of us would be very happy with just a few inches instead of lots of feet worth unless it is for skiing. Oh my! I see what you mean, Karen! I don’t blame you for moving down south. I feel the same thing about England: after living here for 30 years, I can’t wait to move back to south east Spain, where I was born.

The winter photographs are beautiful but I’d rather admire them from a distance 😉 I’d definitely choose Florida to spend the winter. I am lucky to live in a rather mild climate (I always find it difficult to convince people from abroad that here in my Swiss city the climate is warmer than for example in Paris 😉 People imagine Switzerland full of snow and freezing cold in winter.). To be frank, even I was surprised to discover how warm winter was when we moved here. On the other hand I would have nothing against more sun and even higher temperatures… I understand you perfectly!

We (my husband, my mother and I) have been watching the weather in the NE this year and are just blown away at how much snow and unrelentless Mother Nature has been! Though it is so beautiful, as seen in your photos, I am glad that you had help and a chance to have a break in sunny Florida! These photos remind us of life in Iowa and all of the blizzards. It was just part of life for us. Moving to SC, it’s been amazing how much we’ve adjusted to a moderate climate and now how cold we get when visiting family in Iowa! Stay warm Karen!

When living in the States, we used to flee to somewhere warm as you need to see that sun to get you through the thick of it. When I left Maine and moved south to go to college, I knew I’d never struggle through another snowy winter back home. I miss the beauty of the first day’s snowfall and the crunch under my boots as I walk along the road. I miss snow skiing and snowmobiling and ice fishing too. Just not enough to live there. 🙂

I’ve been watching and reading about the absurdly cold/snowy weather up north ! I’m firmly in your camp of heading south for the winter to warmer weather. I have to admit though, as an observer, I do see the snow and think of how cozy and romantic it all is, but I’ve only every lived in Australia or SE Asia where there is no snow – my husband, who is English says the first snow is always beautiful, but then it melts and gets dirty and you slip on the ice – painting a very opposite picture 🙂
Hi Carolyn, We have had a “wicked” winter. This February is the coldest in recorded history for New Hampshire. Snow is pretty but we all wish there was less of it. Your husband is correct for the most part…snow does get dirty and sloppy if you live in cities. Here at our rural home, the snow stays very white until it melts. Ice yes, our drive looks like a sheet of glass and you have to be very careful not to slip and fall.
Having not had too many ‘Winter Wonderland’ experiences, I am definitely enchanted by their appearance but if I’m completely honest with myself, I would have to say that I prefer the look of your place on Vero Beach. Your new home looks like it’s coming along beautifully and the climate looks like it will agree with you xx
We do live in a winter wonderland, Charlie and I’m the first so say how pretty it is as I look out the window this morning. It is below zero but will warm up to 18F with a little snow tonight so I will prefer our place in Vero Beach too, where it is suppose to be mostly sunny and 80F today. 😀

Hi Jo, It certainly is serious snow. As soon as it all melts in spring, we will put our home up for sale. Once it is sold, we will move into our new home in Florida…hopefully it won’t take too long.
I remember traveling on snowy roads back in New England. Thanks, but no thanks. It took forever to get from A to B. Very beautiful though. Sometimes it’s just too much snow.

Has it been unbelievable or what? At least you got out of town & were able to take a break from it. I was wondering what you did about having your house checked while you were gone, especially with the bitter cold we’ve been having. That is a bummer though about the pipe freezing. We’ve been lucky? so far in that we’ve only had one leak from where our porch roof meetings the side of the house in back and the water came down through the window. I don’t know about you, but when it’s like this even though I’m inside & have the heat jacked up, I just am not motivated to do anything. You’d think my house would be sparkling clean but I go into brain freeze and can’t seem to get anything done.
Soon, spring has to be coming soon doesn’t it?
Hi Diane, This really has been an unbelievable winter with a storm almost every other day. It is so cold that my heavy snow boots became brittle and one cracked into pieces. Fingers crossed that spring warms us up gently because I don’t know where all the water from the melting snow will go if it happens too fast. We really were lucky that the burst pipe must have just happened right before we got home.
Oh, wow, Karen! I’m glad you didn’t have more damage in your basement but the snow is truly amazing. We just returned from a week in California where we had mid to upper 80s all week and returned to wake up to -7 this morning. Ouch! But we don’t have never that amount of snow. The east coast certainly has been hammered this this. Your new home looks lovely and I’m sure you’ll be looking forward to heading south for good!
Hi Susan, We really were fortunate with our basement, the pipe must have broke right before we got home. We love our trips to the warm weather, but you are right…it hard when you return to the real world of below freezing temperatures and yes, all the snow. I have been thinking of the people in New England and what a harsh winter that you are experiencing. I have new neighbors that just moved in across the street in October from Boston. Thankfully, here in London, Ontario we’ve been spared the harsh winter that we had last year, but it seems that you and others on the eastern seaboard are not so lucky. Even though our Florida home will be finished in a couple of months we won’t be moving until our home is sold. I think we all wish we could have said “no thanks” to all this snow, Frank. It was nice to get a break where it was sunny and warm. We are very grateful to have such good friends that look after our home and property whenever we travel…we couldn’t do without them.
Good friends and good neighbors are priceless. As a friend told me about what his son (in Boston) said … Dad – snow jokes aren’t funny anymore.

You know what Karen? I think the pictures are beautiful! Maybe it’s because I am a transplanted Canadian living in England and our total “snowfall” this year was less than a cm, but I miss the beauty of snow falling on an evening and waking up to being “snowed in” and the woodstove keeping us toasty. I do get why you (and all my friends in Canada!) are tired of “the beauty” now though. I guess I can afford to wax lyrical when I don’t have to shovel the stuff anymore 😉

Our dear friends from Illinois are selling their house there and moving to Scottsdale for the same reasons, the winters are becoming brutal. Last year we lost power and I was afraid some pipes might burst but we were very fortunate, we got power back after only 28 hours. Many people were without power on the coldest days of the year for more than 8 days. We purchased a generator this year so if it happens again, we’ll have heat, hot water and we’ll plug the refrigerator and freezer in. I can do without lights and TV.
Hi Eva, It has indeed been a brutal winter. I think a lot of people are making a move south…if not permanently at least for the winter months. Our pipe breaking was caused by a bad battery in a thermostat, we were lucky that it happened right before we got home. Thankfully, we have a whole house generator if our power goes out. When we had the bad ice storm a couple years ago, we were on our generator for six days…I think they are wonderful.
I don’t think I have ever seen that much snow. I would definitely prefer the south, good decision.
I wish I hadn’t seen this much either, Grange…6 inches on the ground would be just as pretty. Moving south looks better each day of this long winter.

I must admit, Karen as I watch those weather reports I cross my fingers that the snow storms they are predicting are going to miss us here in central PA. Some have but of course some haven’t. It’s been a brutal February!
You were very fortunate to be able to get away for some of it but not long enough for it all to have been a freezing dream. I always worry about leaving the house in the Winter because of freezing pipes and such. It wouldn’t stop me though! I am very lucky to have wonderful neighbors too.
As Winter wonderland beauty fades, the reality of all that snow does not! The house down in Florida looks warm and inviting. You certainly have made a wise decision. Good Lord willing and the creek don’t freeze, I won’t be far behind. I will not spend another Winter here no matter what!!!

Wow…it is cold! Since I cannot tolerate cold well, I will definitely choose the beach pictures…now, I must admit that the pictures of the snow are beautiful especially the view from the window…

A lot of snow even in my eyes! Your photos are wonderful, snow in them is pure white. Couple years ago we moved to a small town called Mikkeli, because we were tired to shovel snow.

Dreadful, indeed Tandy. Thank you for your wish, we have our fingers crossed. Hopefully, we won’t have more problems although everyone is a little concerned about when this snow starts melting.
I love all of the snow! It is really warm where I am so it makes me miss the cold!

Karen, you might think me absolutely bonkers but currently I could not imagine anything nicer than a veritable snow storm followed by a sunny day with that blue sky and ice flowers on the windows, crisp, fresh air and maybe a few turns on the slopes. Dios Mios! Karen what a pile of snow and what a winter this has been!! You were lucky to escape up North and get down South as so many folks could not travel by car or plane for a couple of weeks. I just escaped to Mexico for a week and the big Southern snow/ice/sleet hit us the day after I left! Great photos of the contrasting landscapes! Stay warm and cozy Karen.

The weather in New England has been unbelievable – I’m so glad that you were in sunny Florida this month. We just had a snowstorm in Virginia which is unusual. Hopefully it will start warming up soon!!
Hi Meg, This winter’s weather is breaking lots of records here and it was wonderful to escape it for a little while. Back to reality now…we are supposed to get another 5 inches or so over Sunday night into Monday morning. Spring can’t come soon enough. 🙂

I grew up in Boston and moved South at 18, and while I sometimes miss New England, I never miss those winters! I’m not cut out for very cold weather. =) My parents still live in our childhood home in MA, so I get to hear all about the cold weather and see lots of snow pictures from them! Love the side-by-side pics of snowy NH vs sunny FL. =D
I certainly understand, Amy…the winters can be very harsh. I know that we will miss living in New Hampshire when we move to Florida but like you, I won’t miss winters.
I hear you Karen, loud and clear!! I live in Upstate NY, and we got a little less snow than you, but man did we get pummeled this year!! We have broken record after record re the cold and below zero temps. Today it is going to be in the 20’s with more snow on the way, and if feels like a tropical heat wave, LOL
You gave me a laugh, Didi as I know what you mean when the 20’s feel warm. Yes, we are getting the snow as well later on today. Sooner or later, this winter weather has to go away. 🙂
You know me Karen, the snow bunny that I am. Having spent a winter in the French Alps where they are equiped to deal with snow on this scale I love dit! But I understand the frustrations when things grind to a halt or as your pipe did, burst. Luckily the leak didn’ sound too damaging.

Hi Claire, While winter can be pretty especially when on vacation, it is hard work keeping up when you have to go about daily life. I’ll be out in the bitter cold this morning shoveling snow yet once again as my husband is out plowing our long drive. After this harsh winter…the coldest in recorded history for our area, we know we have made the right decision to sell our home and move south. Thank you for your wish, we think we will love our new home near the beach in Florida.
Karen, it has been quite the winter here in CO too. We haven’t been hit like your area, but we’ve had 20 inches of snow in the last two weeks. Snow isn’t unusual, it is the lower temps and how long it has lasted. I’m sure your time in Florida was a nice thaw to your bones. I know I’m ready for the sun to warm my face as I sit out on the deck again. Soooooon, very soon.
Hi Judy, 20 inches in two weeks, that’s a lot of snow. That is what happened here as basically all our snow came in the matter of a few weeks. It was nice to get away from the snow and cold but I was out shoveling this morning…at least the sun was out. I know we will all enjoy when springtime arrives and warmth returns.
