Wanted: Apple Technician, Must Love To Travel

Apple Technician, Must Love To Travel…that is what I would love to have at the moment. Social media has changed how we connect with our family and friends while traveling. Years back, souvenir stands and museum gift shops had lines of people buying post cards. In the small space on the back, we would write, “Having a great time, wish you were here”, mail it and hope the recipient received it before we returned home. Once we got home, we subjected our friends to an after dinner slide show of our wonderful holiday.

Writing A Travel Post During One Of My Previous Travel Adventures

Now everyone is sending selfies to their friends on Facebook, instagram, or twitter. I haven’t sent a post card or bought a roll of film in years, my computer and digital camera making all that unnecessary. I even started a blog where I could share my travels with not only my family and closest friends but also with thousands of others here on Back Road Journal.

Sharing Another Travel Adventure A Few Years Back

When I travel, I have a small carry on suitcase that is filled with electronic equipment…charging cords, battery charges, digital camera, extra camera batteries,  two iPhones, an iPad and an Apple MacBook Pro computer so that I can share my traveling adventures with my readers. At each town I stay in, the first thing I ask for is the hotel’s access codes to their internet and where their hotspots are located.

I Never Travel Without My Computer
I Never Travel Without My Computer

During this year’s almost five week trip to Europe, I found out that the one thing I really needed besides all the electronic gadgets I was hauling around, was an apple technician. Perhaps I need to place a help wanted add, “Apple technician, must love to travel”.

Shortly before my husband and I left for Europe, I was locked out of my WordPress Administration page on my blog. I learned that my operating system was too old and was no longer compatible with WordPress so I couldn’t write a post or answer comments. Off to a computer repair shop where my MacBook Pro was updated with MacOS Sierra. Fast forward to the present and I am in Europe trying to share my travel adventures. A new problem developed, my Safari browser wouldn’t work. Luckily a few days ago Apple came out with MacOS High Sierra so I downloaded it into my computer hoping that all would be well.

As you can see from this latest post, my computer is up and running again with this latest operating system but now I have another problem. I can’t use any of the 1000 or so photos I’ve taken on this trip and downloaded into my Mac with my WordPress blog. Thus, I’m writing the short post and using old photos from previous year’s of writing while I’m traveling.

Social Media is driving me crazy…I wish I had about 4000 post cards to let all of my readers know that “I’m having a great time, wish you were here”.

****

My husband and I have another week left on this year’s trip to Europe. When I return home to Florida, I’ll be taking lessons on how to use MacOS High Sierra and perhaps then I’ll be able to share all the wonderful sights we have seen on our travels to Berlin, Prague, Vienna, and Munich as well as spa and mountain resorts in Austria and Germany and a short hop over the border into the Alsace region of France.

  1. I updated my Mac also, and my iPhone. I don’t see any advantage, but maybe securitywise. WordPress cut off some of my widgets. If they are going to do that I wish they would let me know. I am apprehensive about taking my electronics. The last time I traveled my computer died. At least now my computer is backed up in iCloud. I hope that it is a secure as they said it was.

Hope you are having a good time.

    1. Hi Madonna, Perhaps it is just me but everything about this new Apple system seems much more complicated and it certainly doesn’t play well with WordPress. As far as the iCloud is concerned, my computer keeps sending me notes that it can’t connect with my husband’s account…it should be trying to connect with mine. 😦 Despite the computer problems, my husband and I are having a great time, thank you!

    1. You certainly are qualified Mad Dog, that is for sure! With all the flying we’ve done on this trip, why didn’t I think of adding a trip over to London for your technical advice. 😀

  2. Karen , I am with. Our email was hacked on our last trip to France. We fixed it , but it took some time. I hope you didn’t get an email from me asking for money. When I came back my iCloud wouldn’t load onto my desktop. Apple will give you free support for seven years after you purchased your computer . When you call them make sure you are on the official Apple site because there are a lot of fraudulent imitators that want your money. Lately I have been taking my computers to the Genius Bar at the Apple Store.

    1. Hi Gerlinde, No I haven’t gotten any emails from you asking for money…although you know I’d be willing to help. 😀 When we lived in our rural New Hampshire town, the local Apple store with a Genius Bar was less than 30 minutes away. Now that we are living in a city in Florida, the closest one is in Orlando, 1hr45min. away. I’ve found an official repair shop in Vero Beach but I’m also going to have to find someone well versed with not only this new High Sierra operating system but making it work with WordPress. They certainly don’t play well together right now.

    1. It sounds like we are both alike Didi, I’m glad you understand where I’m coming from. We are in the Black Forest now and then head to Munich where we will spend the last of our vacation. Thank you for your wish, it has been great.

    1. I couldn’t agree more Larry, I feel the same way. Hopefully when we return home, I’ll get it all worked out. Right now I can’t comment on your blog because Google thinks someone else is trying to use my Google + account. Actually it is me, I’m just in Europe and it thinks I should be in Florida. It would be funny if I wasn’t trying to communicate with my friends. 😀

  3. Glad to hear that your computer is sorted. We do still postcards when travelling we think it just the personal touch which means so much more than a copy and paste sent to everyone!
Enjoy the rest of your trip and stay safe Diane

    1. Hi Diane, I guess you could say my computer is half sorted…now I need it to download my photos over onto my WordPress library so that I could share them with you and all my other blogging friends. I know what you mean about post cards being a more personal touch…a few readers are saying the same thing. 🙂 We are having a delightful trip, thank you for your wish.

  4. I know exactly what you mean Karen, so frustrating sometimes and so wonderful other times. I learned how to take a selfie this summer but can’t take the way my neck looks in the pics, maybe I need more practice or a trip to the dermatologist? anyway good luck with your electronics. There is an apple store that I went to last year that really helped me out……….

    1. You gave me such a laugh Cheri, I love your comment about the selfies. 😀 The closest Apple store is in Orlando almost 2 hrs away from our home. Perhaps I’ll plan a trip to visit Disney as well as Apple…one will probably make me laugh after I’ve had a cry over at the other.

  5. I now just take my tablet and it works great. Many are just taking their smart Phone. I can´t deal with carrying all that stuff anymore. It will be fun to read all about your travels when you get home. Travel safe! BTW I still send postcards, especially to my grandkids who take them to show and tell!!

    1. Hi Darlene, My husband takes his iPad but a computer normally works so well for me when I want to add galleries of photos to a post…kind of like a digital postcard. 🙂 Show and tell, yes I’m sure your grandkids love to take your postcards and share them with their friends.

  6. I am good at Apple stuff, and I love to travel… but this darned full time job is getting in the way! 🙂 Have a good final week, Karen!

    1. Hi David, If you ever decide to give up that interesting job of yours, you sound like a wonderful candidate…especially with all your wonderful cooking talent. 😀

  7. I feel the pain—I’m in the process of trying to download the program and it won’t download—I’m getting so exasperated that I’m considering getting a new mac book pro but this one is only 3 years old!!!

    1. Oh Julie…it is not easy. I’ll be interested to see what you think of your new program if you get it downloaded and are able to use it.

    1. Thank you Tanya, I appreciate your wish. The weather isn’t supposed to be so good during the rest of the trip but these last two hotels are spa resorts so how bad can it be. 🙂

  8. LOL! Karen, I am facing a similar situation with my PC laptop. When I soon graduate to a new one, my photo editor with 10K photos edited there (Picasa) I find is no longer used by google. They want to sell me a newer photo editor and I am not sure what will happen to photos in archive. So we both are in a bit of tech limbo…you have much more patience than I.
So look forward to your new adventures! And may you have a peaceful FLA holiday season.
And may I mention how svelte you appear? 😉 I am working on losing my 10 lbs. D.

    1. It’s not easy, is it Diane. I trashed several thousand photos before I upgraded to Sierra but the remainder seemed to have transferred to both Sierra and now to High Sierra just fine. Now I can’t get anything to transfer over to WordPress for a post. Oh if only I had that traveling technician with me! Thank you for your sweet compliment…wait till on get on the scale when I get home. 😀

      1. I can imagine the challenge when surrounded by all that delectable food! Happy Travels and Safe Home! I await the verdict from my PC techs. OMG!!!

  9. I really feel for you! I like to think I cope well with all the techie stuff but it changes so often … computers go out of date so quickly and I’m reluctant to upload updates as I’ve had disasters with those (Apple once had to replace my phone it was so bad) or they change things so much you spend ages finding stuff or understanding it all over again. Last time I updated my computer I thought I’d lost ALL my old documents though eventually found them but stored in a way that was difficult to access. I hope you’ve enjoyed your holiday anyway – you’ve been to some wonderful places – and look forward to hearing more about it when you can access your photos 🙂

    1. Thank Kay, When I wasn’t able to get my computer to function here in Europe, my husband and I worked for days trying to fix it. When I saw Apple had an update, I pushed a button…never realizing it was a whole new operating system. Wish I could go back to my original one, this one doesn’t play well with WordPress. Once home and I get someone to teach me to use the new system, I’ll be sharing all the wonderful new places we been on this five week European adventure. I’m glad you are looking forward to the photos. 🙂

  10. Haha – don’t you get extra attention from airport security with that carryon suitcase full of electronics? They might think you’re peddling electronics 😀
I actually made a point of sending real postcards to people from my last trip, and everyone was surprised to receive one, but they all liked it, so I’ll be doing that again in the future.
Hope you’re enjoying your last vacation week – without any tech hassles!

    1. Hi Kiki, We signed up last year for Global entry which helps going through security at home but you are right, when we have a stopover say in London, we sure do get a lot of attention. 🙂 We are enjoying our last week, thank you. Right now I don’t think we aren’t too far away from you, we are in Baiersbronn, Germany at the Bareiss hotel and have been making day trips into the lovely countryside.

  11. Even with all this technology, I still enjoy sending postcards, (I think others enjoy getting them too:) And, I LOVE taking “old time” pictures.

Enjoy the rest of your vaca, Karen and worry about all that other stuff when you get home.

    Thanks for sharing…

    1. Hi Louise, Would you believe I have a few of the postcards I sent to my parents on my first trip to Europe. They gave them to me one year and they make wonderful souvenirs of places I’ve visited that have changed so much over the years. I appreciate your kind words, we are enjoying our trip.

  12. Good: love that top photo of you! Good: love to have heard from you! Bad: would have wnjoyed to see and hear some of the travel stories. Bad: that all this took time during your travels . . . Good luck and all the best for the last week over your Pond and looking forwards to what you can produce back home, by now sans hurricanes . . .

    1. Hi Eha, I’m happy to know that you enjoyed the good part of this post…thank goodness I had a couple of photos in my WordPress media library from previous trips. Hopefully when I return home, I’ll be able to have someone work with me in regards to this new operating system and I can share this year’s adventures. We have been to some wonderful new places that I hope everyone will enjoy seeing. I appreciate your kind wish, thank you. The latest hurricane seems be be heading into the Gulf and shouldn’t affect our trip home…that is unless there is something else brewing in the Atlantic.

    1. Hi Amy, I was afraid Sierra might do the same thing when the new operating systems were downloaded but I was lucky there. I may end up needing your guy in Jensen but hopefully I’ll be able to get this sorted out when we return to Vero Beach. I definitely appreciate the offer, thank you!

  13. I’m laughing as I read this. Like you, I usually take my computer, but I got the notion I wanted to lighten up and got an iPad Pro for an upcoming trip to India. While it does a lot, it’s not like using the real thing which is so much easier so long as you’re on WIFI. I’m still practicing but experiencing lots of frustration.. WordPress needs to make some improvements to its app. Carry on, my friend.

    1. Hi Linda, I’ll be very interested in hearing how your new iPad Pro works on your upcoming trip to India. I’d appreciate it if you let me know what your opinions are compared to using a computer to post on WordPress. My MacBook Pro is getting old and its heavy but up until lately it has been dependable. I’ve thought about getting the new MacBook Pro a few months back when I started having problems but didn’t want to have to go through learning all the changes Apple has made. Now I don’t know.

      1. I’m still practicing but here’s what I like so far. I can write offline and then upload photos when I have WIFI. I like to center my text but that can’t be done without using HTML which is a pain in the ……I have suggested to WP they add that capability to the app. What I like about the iPad Pro is its size and ease of use with a keyboard and pencil. I’m in love with the pencil. With an attachment you can load photos right from your camera which is a huge plus when traveling. I wish it could use keywords and search but those features seem to be limited to the computer. An iPad doesn’t replace a computer but it comes close. I’ll keep you posted.

  14. Just imagine how inundated you would be with Apple technician applicants. 😀
Technology is a real pain some days and for the most part is above my pay grade. Thankfully my Pete always comes to my rescue.
Enjoy the remainder of your travels – I bet we are all going to be in awe of your trip when you do share your pics.
    Have a fabulous weekend Karen.
    🙂 Mandy xo

    1. Yes I would Mandy but it might be worth it. 😀 I’m totally with you about technology…I try to keep up with it even though I don’t understand most of it. All I want to do is share my travel adventures and the recipes I create with you and all my friends around the world. I do think everyone will enjoy seeing all the new places we’ve been this year, just wish we had more sunshine for the photos.

    1. So very true Gallivanta. I love the fact that technology has made it possible to have so many friends from around the world stopping by to read what I’ve written. What I don’t enjoy are the frustrating times when I can’t get the same technology to function properly. Thank you for your nice wish, we are having a delightful time on this year’s travels.

  15. Hi Debbie, The blind leading the blind…well I’ll have to think about that. 😀 Thank you for your wish, it has been a memorable trip and hopefully will remain that way until we arrive safely back home.

    1. I truly am lucky Denise. This trip turned out longer than planned because of Hurricane Irma but extra days in Europe is certainly not a bad thing. 🙂

  16. Social media is both awesome and terrible. I would actually encourage you to send some post cards. I have received a few this year and they totally surprise me and make my day, far more than online posts. Nothing wrong with the best of both worlds. I would certainly love a post car from you 🙂

  17. The problems we make for ourselves, Karen. 🙂 🙂 I have to admit to being pretty low tech. I love taking the photos and weaving the stories but when I’m away I just want to be there. The sharing is for later, or whenever I can fit it in. Just looking at the photos brings it all back. Having said that, I have started to use Instagram a bit, and I certainly appreciate your frustration. I shall be in the Algarve for a similar 5 week period and it’s a long time to be ‘out of touch’. Make the most of your last week. You can share it later 🙂

    1. I know what you mean Jo, it is hard finding the time to share stories of our travels when we are actually trying to enjoy the moment. We are heading to Munich before flying home next week…it has been a wonderful trip. Enjoy your time in the Algarve and I look forward to catching up on your adventures when we are both home. 🙂

  18. I feel your pain! I’m trying to get ahead as we are in the UK in November but it takes a lot of planning and I will still have to take my laptop, camera, phone and notepad. As for social media it is a necessary evil as my traffic comes from there. Enjoy the rest of your trip and I will look forward to seeing all the photos and the food!

    1. Hi Amanda, It sounds like we travel the same way. We will be heading home in a few days and then I’ll have to work on getting these computer problems sorted out so that I can post about our wonderful holiday. I know you are looking forward to your trip coming up shortly, I know I’ll enjoy reading about it.

  19. Wow, you sure have had your problems with the storm and now your computer. Nothing frustrates me more than having technical issues! I’m very happy you got away and you’ve been enjoying yourself on a well-deserved vacation.

    1. Hi Judi, Yes I’ve certainly had more than my share of problems lately. The nice thing is that we have had an absolutely wonderful time in Europe. Thank you for your kind words.

  20. Oh Alsace. Beautiful. Glad you’re having fun, except for the technical glitches. We’re about to visit New Zealand and Australia, and I considered buying a laptop. I have a beautiful HP desk top at home, use an iphone when I don’t want to be intrusive with my big camera, plus of course calling and texting, and my trusty ipad. So far this has always worked, but with being gone so long I definitely want to be more organized when it comes to my photos. There will be many!

    1. We are having fun Mimi, thank you. I’m sure that you will be taking loads of photos on your trip…I can’t wait until you share them as I’ve not been to either country.

    1. Hi Fatima, It seems you use social media way more than I do…good for you. 🙂 As to those postcards, I just got a couple yesterday.

  21. Ugh. I would hope one of my kids was on the trip with us to help as I don’t think I could have done as well as you did troubleshooting on my own. Can’t wait to hear more about your adventure and see some of your beautiful photos!

    1. Hi Liz, I don’t know how well I did…I’d call it shear luck. 😀 I can’t wait to get my computer to someone who can figure it all out when we get home later this week. I’m delighted that you are looking forward to hearing about our trip, thank you.

  22. OK Karen– I have lots to say about this post! First — your hair is so much longer!! really cute! And I am a little jealous of 5 weeks traveling in Europe!! What a dream! I noticed your list of places and am anticipating photos to come! And even though I do still send postcards, I agree that it’s funto instagrram/facebook pics home to family while you’re traveling. I’ve made my share of trips to the Apple store– but thankfully our son-in-law is an engineer at Apple in Cupertino. so when he comes down (or I go up), he puts all my problems back to rights. OK, well, I’ll be checking back in to see your travels!! so Fun! xox

    1. Thank you for your kind words Rhonda, they are much appreciated. Aren’t you lucky that your son-in-law is an engineer with Apple…our nearest store is almost two hours away in Orlando. I may be heading that way when we get home. Hopefully, I should have photos and stories of this wonderful trip up very soon.

  23. Hi Karen, I hope you have resolved all your computer and wordpress problems (have you considered your own domain? I decided from the beginning to have my own domain because I had read many people had problems with WordPress-owned blogs… changes they didn’t control, etc..).
I come a bit late but just wanted to say I’m glad you managed to go on your holidays in spite of the hurricane and that you and your family didn’t suffer from it.
I am looking forward to reading about your holidays. I recently went on a one-day trip to Strasbourg (I even wonder now if it wasn’t at the same time you did…) and quite enjoyed it!

    1. Hi Sissi, With as many problems I’ve had between my computer and WordPress not getting along, I’ve given some thought to my own domain. It can’t be much harder to figure out than what I’m going through now. 🙂 Thank you for your kind thoughts regarding the hurricane, we were lucky the way everything turned out. We will be heading home in a couple of days and hopefully I’ll find a way to get this holiday posted…thanks.

    1. Thank you Jean for your nice comment, I’m not too sure about being ahead of you in the tech department. If so, I’d be showing you wonderful photos of this trip to Europe. 😀 We are heading home in a couple of days and then I can get an expert to fix my computer.

  24. Oh my word I know the pain with loss of connectivity! We are becomming IT experts in our own time just to underrstand the problems, let alone fixing it. Good luck to you! Off to Spain this week so we shall se how the “apples” conduct themselves there. Take care.

    1. Hi Poli, I certainly understand where you are coming from…it isn’t easy is it. Hopefully, Apple will treat you kindly on your trip. Enjoy Spain and I hope you share your adventures.

    1. Thank you Agness for your nice comment. While we made it to Europe safely after Irma, my computer is still giving me grief. We are heading home in a couple of days and then I’ll have an expert look at it so that I can share are wonderful holiday in Europe.

  25. Welcome back and hope your technical issues will be largely behind you soon. I don’t know how everyone does it. I’m pretty clueless on the IT things and social media…that’s a job unto itself but I’m sure once you figure it out and it starts to click, it has its own rewards. Happy travels and continued sharing!

  26. A traveling Apple technician would be a wonderful thing! You have been visiting some of my favorite cities, Karen! Enjoy every moment along the way!

This year, our European vacation came to us. My dear friend traveled from Germany to spend some weeks with us. We truly enjoyed our precious moments together every day! She is back home again, near the Black Forest, and we are missing her already. Happy travels, Karen! ♡

  27. Funny that you mention that…I have a technician working on that same issue on my site right now. I haven’t been locked out yet (knocking on wood), so hopefully, he’ll get me updated before anything crashes. So glad you are back up and running! Enjoy your trip!

  28. Hi Karen,
I love that electronics has made our life so much easier but the headaches it causes when there is a malfunction makes me wonder if it’s all worth it, lol. But being part of this blogging world is so unique ad wonderful, I think it is 🙂
    Have a wonderful time!

  29. One of the reasons I remain on the Blogger platform is they take care of most of the technical stuff behind the scenes — I rarely have to worry about anything like that. It’s kind of a clunky platform, though — but it works and it’s free, so I can’t complain. 🙂 We just got back from Europe and I took a computer, but didn’t bother trying to do anything blog-related other than answer comments. Too busy doing other things! Sounds like your trip is wonderful — looking forward to hearing more about it.

  30. Technology is great but sometimes it is hard to understand. For social media, it is super duper hard to follow, I am getting lost with all these channels of communication that are developed each year!!!.I love travel with my electronics as well, but lately I’ve come to really hate that, all the security demands and stuff at the airports with 3 kids and each has at least two devices of his own!! it is too much. Hope you have a wonderful time and return home safely.

  31. I was certain I left a comment here…better late than never! Hope your trip is going well notwithstanding your tech issues, they are such a bother. I have a tech guy and he probably can fix your issues remotely, but you have to give him access to your computer. He is a retired police detective as well as the largest distributor of Apple products in Canada (go figure!). DM me if you want his name.

  32. Thanks for warning me about the need to have MacOS sierra. I have never upgraded and the other day a message popped up on WordPress saying my browser version is very old or something like I need to update. I wasn’t paying attention but now I know what they probably meant. I will try and install the new OS. Have a great week!

  33. Oh gosh, the technical side of blogging drives me nuts sometimes! I consider myself decently savvy with techy stuff, but I constantly feel like I’m a fish out of water when it comes to crazy tech stuff that happens. Your story about the photos sounds all too familiar! I do hope it gets sorted out though, as I can’t wait to see photos from your trip. My wife and I were in the Alsace region earlier this summer…it’s beautiful over there! 🙂

  34. It would be fantastic to have an apple technician travelling with you – I had a few issues over the years where I would have loved to have one with me. It really is amazing with how much gear I travel nowadays – I also have one small carry on dedicated to all my equipment and sometimes with blogging life could be a little bit easier 🙂 Looking forward to reading more about your Europe trip. Have a great weekend!

  35. Ahh. The wonders of technology. Truthfully I think it controls us more than it should. After all it was supposed to make life easier! My husband travels all over the world and I’ve never seen so many gadgets in my life. Each country seems to have its own operation. Just enjoy and can’t wait to hear about your journey!

  36. If you pay for my travel I can be the technician 🙂
I love Europe 5 weeks is not enough even 10, the foods and sights are amazing. Cant wait to see your photos to share

  37. I remember in the olden days when I would travel. The first thing I’d do on arrival is go and buy some postcards. I’d spend most nights writing to friends and telling them all about my adventures. Such a shame it’s no longer like that – I always enjoyed finding a postcard in the letter box. I hope you had a wonderful holiday and good luck learning all about computers! xx

  38. I have a love/hate relationship with technology and all my Apple products. Every other day, I just want to close everything down and go back to the good old days, where people couldn’t reach you for days and you never knew what kind of vacation photos you took until you came home and developed them! lol! I do miss postcards thou 🙂

  39. So great to see your smiling face Karen. I bet it was not smiling during the episodes of mac issues. Uggh! We have a love-hate relationship with technology. Seriously I think apple has it set up that most people get frustrated that you can’t update without a new operating system so just go out and get a new one. Seriously I think this is their secret.. ploy… LOL

  40. I’m wondering if the macbookpro is different than a desk top as far as updates. I think my Mac is using Sierra but I’m not sure (currently it’s in a storage facility and will be for about six months). In any case I haven’t has any issues but I use self hosted WordPress so maybe that’s why?

I did have to laugh at your description of postcards vs selfies. So true!

    xxx

  41. Your trip looks wonderful. So many places to explore and take in the beauty. Sorry you ran across some issues, but it sounds like you conquered them. Enjoy the rest of your trip. We are traveling too and I realized I forgot my darn iPad cord…lol

  42. I try and disconnect when we travel, doing the minimum possible but still keeping in touch. This year I chose a stunning postcard to send to my nieces as it is the one form of cummunication I really love using. Hope you get everything sorted out!

  43. This is awesome post. I love it. I take always my tablet with me when on travel. Normally we look news from our country and some TV series, which we love. Many years ago, I was afraid to lose my photos when travelling, but my new camera solved the problem, because it has two cards, which work in tandem. I am glad that You had wonderful trip. Happy Sunday!

  44. Computers … arrrrgh … We have an new iMac and two MacAir less than a year old, Sierra was installed when we bought them. Everything was perfect, no problems. Now we have updated to High Sierra, the machines are slower and not all programs runs smoothly (like Flume that I use for Instagram) and our Outlook mail program is NOR compatible with High Sierra AT ALL, we have no access to our mails and contacts … arrrgh … 😉
