Fathers everywhere are being celebrated this Sunday. I would like to join in with A Tribute To My Father. I know how lucky I was to have had the opportunity to grow up knowing the love my father had for me. As we celebrate Father’s Day, hopefully we all have had a chance sometime in our lives to tell our fathers how much their love, nurturing and guidance has meant to us and how it helped make us who they are today.
My father was always my Daddy, not Dad or father and I loved him like most little girls love their father. He always joked that I was his special gift as I was born on Father’s Day, I was my Daddy’s little girl.
He was not a famous person, just an ordinary man who did his best in life. He served his country with honor and provided a good home for my mother, brother and myself, like most fathers do.
He was a gentle and kind-hearted man who I never heard complain about anything. He was a strict parent but in a loving way. I was brought up to be respectful of others, always saying “please, thank you, yes ma’am or yes sir and may I be excused”. He always made sure that I apologized if I had done something wrong and taught me the importance of saying “I’m sorry” if I had hurt someone else’s feelings.
He was the person I knew I could go to with a problem because he was a good listener and gave good advice. He used to always say, “just because you are a girl, that doesn’t mean you can’t do it”. His encouragement is one of the things that has guided me though out my life.
My Daddy was special to me but also to so many others in his community. Everyone used to call him “the mayor” because of his commitment to the neighborhoods that surrounded our ranch in Texas. He seldom missed a County Commissioners Court meeting, he served as bailiff, and was a volunteer at the local hospital.
I’m lucky to have had a good father in my life. He is gone now but certainly will not be forgotten. I am lucky to have another man in my life that is special and that is my husband. He too, is a father whose children love him and will be remembering him on this special day.
I want to wish each father a “Happy Father’s Day”. Whether you spend the day at an outdoor barbecue with family and friends or perhaps playing a round of golf, I hope you enjoy your day. I’m sure your loved ones will be remembering you today.
A lovely tribute to your dad, Karen. He was a handsome and very wise man. Have a great Father’s Day with your hubby and family. 🙂
Thank you Sylvia, I do think my father was handsome…that photo has always been my favorite. I hope your husband and son enjoy the day too.
Dear Karen, what a lovely tribute to your father – he certainly sounds like he was such a wonderful, kind and special person! – We celebrated Father´s Day a few weeks back with lots of great food. Thank you for sharing your memories!
Have a wonderful Sunday!
Andrea
Thank you Andrea, It seems that anyone who knew my father liked him. I was lucky to have him in my life. I know that your husband must have had a great day celebrating with your family.
Karen, your father sounds like a wonderful man and a good father in every way. I was daddy’s little girl too. God bless all the fathers today.
Sam
Hi Sam, I’m glad you were daddy’s little girl too, I sure he was a great father. It is wonderful to have had such a good man who was also a good father influence my life the way my father did. God bless them indeed. 🙂
Thanks for your thoughtful post. I was just having some very similar toughts about my father and hope that my children will have some of the same feelings down the road!
I’m happy to know that you enjoyed the post, Bishop. Having gotten to know you through your blog, I can assure you that your children feel the same way about you. I hope you have a great day!
A wonderful tribute to your father. What a lucky little girl you were to have such a good relationship with your “Daddy”.
Thank you Teresa, I do think I was lucky to have such a caring father…my Daddy was special to me.
A beautiful tribute.
Thank you Tin Man, I’m glad you liked the post.
I bet you were the apple of his eye! He sounds like such a wonderful person, you are lucky to have such a kind and gracious man to guide you through life. You can look into his eyes and see his compassion.
I do think I was lucky to have him for a father and appreciate your kind words. 🙂
What a wonderful tribute to your Daddy! He must have been a very special person … not an ordinary man after all.
Hi Francesca, You are right…in my eyes he was anything but ordinary. Thank you for your kind words. 🙂
What a wonderful tribute Karen. You father sounds very special, and your husband too. It’s good to remember even those fathers who are no longer with us on this special day for they live on in us and our children.
Thank you Kay, for your lovely compliment. Yes, the fathers that are no longer with us will not be forgotten. Their love and what they shared with us helped make us what we are today.
I am a daddy’s girl too. I say “am” even though he is gone because that will always be a big part of who I am. My dad sounds very much like your father in every way. How lucky we were to have been raised by these wonderful men. By the way, happy birthday to you!
Hi Karen, It seems the more we know about each other the more we are alike…I’m glad you were a daddy’s girl too. We were lucky to have such loving fathers to guide us growing up. Thank you for the wish. 🙂
I think about Daddy each day, and I would give anything to have him here with me. Whenever the holidays or his birthday rolls around, the memories always hit me hard. Yet, it is good to know that he’s at peace. Yes, yes, yes. I will always be Daddy’s Girl.
I hear you!!!
Hi Arlene, When we are fortunate enough to have grown up with a wonderful father, it is sad when we no longer have them with us. They become so much a part of our life that the good thing is that it is impossible to forget about them…today and every day.
Well said Karen and I had one of those special dad’s as well. My oldest daughter calls me Daddy.
I’m glad that you enjoyed the post Larry. I’m happy that you had one of those special dads also. From what I have seen from your posts, you are much loved by your family as well. Happy Father’s Day, I hope you are enjoying yourself.

Wonderful tribute!
Thank you Arthur, for your lovely compliment.
What a loving portrait… thanks for sharing, Karen.
Thank you David, I appreciate your nice comment. 🙂
How very moving, Karen. I lost my own father 4 yrs ago and though the words I would use to remember him on this day would be quite different, the sentiments are similar.
Happy Birthday.
Thank you Boleyn, for your kind words and wish…they are much appreciated. Our fathers are not with us anymore but our memories of them will always remain.
Lovely tribute! I’m lucky that my father is still alive (he’s 93!) so I’ll be seeing him today. But remembering is the next best thing. Good post — thanks.
Thank you John, I’m happy that you enjoyed the post. How wonderful that your father is 93 and you get to spend time with him today. Please do enjoy every minute together. 🙂
Loved this tribute, Karen. He sounds like he was a great father. I think the men from that generation were very protective of their families and knew just how important it was to set a good example. Let’s hope the younger generation steps up and does such a good job.
Have a wonderful day!
Thank you Sue, for your kind words. I’m happy to know that you enjoyed the tribute. I do think you are right about the generation that raised us, always wanting to set a good example. I hope your husband and you are making the most of the day, enjoy!
What a wonderful testimony to your father – your words resonate with so many of us who were so blessed to have a loving Dad!
I appreciate your kind words, TW. I do know that you had a wonderful, loving Dad. I have always loved the apple trees that you planted in his memory.
Your post brought tears to my eyes. My Daddy was a special kind man who served his country and his community like yours. Your Daddy was handsome. You can actually see the kindness in his face.
Thank you for your sweet comment, Penny. I do think my father was handsome and this is my favorite photo of him. I’m happy that you were also blessed to have a special Daddy in your life.
Your father would be proud to be remembered with such love. You were a lucky young lady to have someone so special to guide you through the early part of your life. 🙂
Thank you for your lovely words, Judy. I do think I was very lucky to have such a caring father.
A wonderful tribute and lovely memories you have of your Daddy . My Mr France and I have enjoyed a lovely for fathers day lunch, both being waited on from beginning to end by our daughter and one of our grandsons, who came unannouced with lunch for us all and a beautiful Fuchsia in a vintage stone urn. I hope you had a lovely day with your family..
Thank you Barbara, I’m happy to know that you enjoyed the tribute and appreciate your nice wish. I’m happy that Mr. France, you and your family had a lovely Father’s Day celebration. I hope that you are doing well and quickly recovering from your back surgery.
A standard to which all men can strive…
Thank you Charlie, what a nice thing to say…it is very much appreciated.
Hello Karen, your post reads as a lovely tribute to your father and how special that you were born on Father’s Day.
Thank you B, I’m happy that you enjoyed my tribute to my father. I always liked the idea that I was born on Father’s Day because my father always said what a special gift I was for him. 🙂
I had a very special, Daddy, too. He told his 4 girls they could accomplish anything. Sady, he died at 50 when I was a teen, but I know what a good man he was, not only to his family but countless others. And I know, not everyone has/had good fathers. My dh didn’t, he has not one good memory of his father who left them, never to be seen again. I can’t imagine! In spite of not having a role model, he is a wonderful dad and Grandpa.
God bless the good fathers!
Hi Kathleen, I’m sorry that you lost your father at such an early age. He must have been missed very much my you and your sisters. It sounds like our fathers were a lot alike about encouraging us to accomplish anything we wanted to do in life. It is so true that many children never get to know their fathers or worse yet, wish they didn’t because they were not nice men. I hope your husband has a wonderful Father’s Day, I’m sure he is very worthy of the love his family feels for him.
Your father was obviously a wonderful man, proud and full of life – so special 🙂
A beautiful tribute!
Cheers
Choc Chip Uru
Hi Uru, I do think I was very lucky to have a father who I not only thought was wonderful when I was a little girl but when I grew up, I realized that he was a very good man that was admired not only by me but also his peers. I appreciated reading your memories of your father. For this holiday, I spent some time with my older son, who lives in town, and talked on the phone with my younger son, who lives in Minnesota. Thought some about my own dad, who died a few years back.
Thank you for your kind words, Jason. I’m happy that you enjoyed the post and hope that you had a wonderful day.
This is a lovely tribute to your daddy, Karen, and he sounds like a wonderful man! I too feel blessed to have had a great dad. I miss him every day xox

Have a great week…
Thank you Marigene, for you nice comment. I hope you have a nice week as well.
What a heartwarming post for the beginning of the week! Now in Australia Father’s Day is celebrated in September. but all the feelings generated are naturally the same! Yes, you were lucky . . . I too was very much Daddy’s little girl taught very much the same way . . . an only child . . . decades after his untimely death there is not a day I do not try to do him proud or feel ashamed if I know I have failed. Daddy was in absolute awe of women and I grew up hearing ‘Eha, you women can do everything we men can and always achieve more with a greater degree of difficulty’! He made me mentally strong and healthy and I have always loved him for a beginning few have! . . . . Ooh, yes, and besides all else your Daddy was more handsome than most 😉 !
Thank you Eha, for your kind words. It is so truly that we do try to live up to what our fathers expected from us…I hope they would be happy with the women we have become. I appreciate your compliment, the photo is my very favorite and I agree with you, I think my father was handsome. 🙂
Beautiful Karen, thank you for sharing it with us! xx

What a beautiful tribute to your father. You’re a lucky woman to have chosen him. Father’s Day is the first Sunday in September here so it’s been decidedly less than fatherish on this side of the ocean this weekend. 🙂

Thank you for your lovely comment, Mélanie. Yes, I did read your post on papas and you are a lucky woman. Your wonderful husband is a very handsome man. 🙂
Hi Karen!
Thank you so much for sharing this lovely tribute of your father. I didn’t grow up in a home that emphasized apologizing much. Luckily, I married a man who’s very good at it and I appreciate him teaching my girls the importance of saying they’re sorry. Having such a strong, male role figure for my girls is so important to me. Father’s are so vital to little girls!
Hi Laura, It sounds like you have a wonderful husband that truly cares about the way his girls grow up…that is terrific. 🙂
A lovely ode to father’s, especially your lovely Daddy! He looks cute too, in that picture!
Hi Sophie, I’m glad that you enjoyed the post. I’m sure my Daddy would smile to know that you thought he was cute. 🙂
A very moving post, Karen.
Thank you Sissi, I’m appreciate your lovely comment.
What a great post in honor of your daddy, Karen. A handsome fellow! I always called my father, “daddy” too. It was always difficult finding cards for father’s day that referred to a father as daddy. Most say father or dad. I read a quote once that said “Anyone can be a father, but it takes a special man to be a daddy”. Thanks for sharing!
Hi Debbie, I’m happy that you enjoyed the post and appreciate your nice comment. You are right about cards and I love the quote. 🙂
🙂
A lovely tribute.
Thank you Darryl, I happy that you liked the post.
Such a lovely tribute to your Daddy, Karen. I think little girls are lucky to have such a special bond with our fathers.

You’ve almost made me cry (actually I have shed a couple of tears). I totally share what you have written. It’s been almost 15 years since my father passed away and to this day there is not a single day that goes by without me thinking about him and about the love I have/had for him. Thank you so much for this post Karen!

Good Evening Karen, Your daddy would have loved the words you wrote about him…. he sounds like he was a very special man.
George had a wonderful Father’s Day as for the first time in many years both our daughters were able to be at home for Father’s Day this year. We had a wonderful meal at Carluccio’s with lots of wonderful food.
Best Wishes to you.
Daphne
Hi Daphne, I appreciate your kind words. Knowing my father, I do think he would have enjoyed what I wrote about him. He didn’t always share his feeling freely (I’m very much the same way) but I think this post would have made him smile. I’m happy that George was able to spend the day with both of your daughters, it sounds like a lovely celebration.
Oh Karen it seems we had similar dads or daddys really…..I miss him terribly and you described my dad perfectly as you described yours…..I was indeed lucky to have him if only for a short time…I lost him when he started with Alzheimers when he was around 50…he died when he was 68.
Hi Donna, I’m happy to know that you had a wonderful father too but I’m so sorry that you lost him so early, especially to Alzheimers. I know you must miss him terribly.
Such a beautiful tribute to your daddy. I hope he hasn’t been gone to long. I lost my dad 27 years ago and it seems like yesterday. He was also a good and kind man with a great sense of humor.
Thank you Mary, for your lovely compliment and wish. I’m sorry that you lost your father way too early, I know you must miss him as I miss my father.
Awww! I missed this last weekend, Karen, and I’m so glad I caught up to it today. What a precious tribute to your obviously very kind and conscientious father. I loved reading that he was so involved in his community, too. That little piece of detail fits nicely with a quality that I find very admirable. Lovely tribute, and by the way, a very handsome man! ox
Hi Debra, I appreciate your thoughtful comment about the tribute to my father. I always thought my father was handsome, I glad you think so too. 🙂
