Tirol, Spectacular Alpine Scenery

The Austrian state of Tirol, with its breathtaking mountain views, picture perfect towns and villages, and clean mountain air, is often referred to as “the heart of the Alps.” Whether you want to hike high mountain pastures in the summer and fall, ski down one of the 500 mountains over 3,000 meters (9,843 feet) high in the winter, or visit one of its historic medieval towns, the Tirol Offers Spectacular Alpine Scenery no matter what time of the year you visit.

There are wonderful choices of where to stay in the Tirol. You could choose the small provincial  capital city of Innsbruck with its landmark Bergisel Ski Jump towering over the city. Ruled for 600 years by the Hapsburg Empire, it has interesting museums and churches, and lively streets filled with boutiques, sidewalk cafes and restaurants.

There are famous ski resorts like St. Anton, Lech or Kitzbühel for skiing and apres ski nightlife. Kitzbühel, a favorite of the rich and famous is especially fun at Christmastime when the pedestrian center of old town holds an outdoor Christmas market.

In summer, you might want to stay at one of the beautiful lakeside resorts like Achenkirch am Achensee, Austria’s largest mountain lake, Zell am See, or in a quaint village where you can hear the sound of cow bells in the distance.

My husband and I usually spend one or two weeks in this area while visiting Austria, dividing our time between a couple of our favorite hotels. The first stop on our visit this year was the town of Lermoos, where we returned to the Hotel Post located in the center of town. The hotel has wonderful views of the Alps, delicious food and a lovely spa. Our second stop was in the Stubaital valley, which is known for its glacial skiing most of the year, at the Spa Hotel Jagdhof in the town of Neustift im Stubaital. We enjoy the traditionally decorated lodge, the warm welcome that we receive at this family run hotel  and its terrific spa.

This year, we added a third stop to our itinerary so that we could further explore the Tirol. In particular, we wanted to see the area known as the Hohe Tauern National Park. Our choice for this stop was the popular lakeside resort town, Zell am See.

We chose to stay at the lovely Hotel Salzburgerhof which is just a block away from the lake. I was expecting this hotel to be nice, but the Salzburgerhof is more than nice. From the wonderful suite with its own private sauna, to a restaurant that served innovative and delicious food, to having the top rated spa in Austria, everything at this hotel was perfect.

The hotel’s room price includes breakfast, a light lunch buffet, afternoon pastries, and a multi course evening meal.

Even though the desserts were very tempting each evening, we usually chose to make a cheese plate from the great choice of perfectly aged cheeses. The cheeses paired with truffle honey and fig mustard were terrific. After all, we had already had pastry in the afternoon and oh what a nice selection. As good as all the pastries looked, we had the warm cheese strudel with vanilla sauce each day. We couldn’t pass it by…it was delicious!

We left the lovely dining room each evening happy from a day of wonderful excursions, a delicious meal with good Austrian wines, and headed back to our room for a night’s sleep.

Even though I’m uncomfortable with heights, we decided to drive the world’s highest and most famous alpine road, the Grossglockner. The 48 km (30 mile) long mountain road with 36 hairpin bends takes you into the heart of the Hohe Tauern National Park. Austria’s largest national park is a spectacular region and the experience was memorable.

During this thrilling and beautiful ride through the park, we enjoyed many wonderful sights. The lovely little town of Heiligenblut at the end of the Grossglockner Road was lovely. We continued our travels and visited the town of Lienz and stopped at the Bruck castle before our return to Zell am See.

Beautiful churches, elaborately painted buildings, spectacular alpine  scenery and the warm hospitality of the Austrian people,  keep my husband and I returning to this wonderful Tirol region of Austria. I hope you will have the opportunity to visit someday…it is an unforgettable experience.

  1. Golly. Just beautiful! The places you visit should pay you to become their PR rep – you do such a great job of communicating how wonderful the sights and experiences are at the places you visit, and do it in a way that has real meaning to your readers. Good stuff – thanks.

    1. Thank you for your kind words, John. I really appreciate the wonderful compliment. I’m happy to know that you enjoyed the post…I know it was heavy on photos but I really wanted everyone to enjoy what we were seeing.

    1. Hi Carl, Thank you for stopping by for a visit and your nice compliment. I’m glad that you enjoyed the photos of the Tirol. I know you would love the region…it is beautiful.

    1. Hi Chris, I’ve been telling my husband each day that I think Austria has to be one of the most beautiful places in the world. I’m happy that you enjoyed the photos…thank you for your nice comment.

  2. Well, I WOULD have visited—but you didn’t give me enough time to sneak into the luggage!!
    Hahahahha
Oh, it’s all so beautiful. I’m very envious……..but very happy you are so kind to share your trip.

Things have been gloomy and rainy here. I think fall has finally arrived. It’s time to “hunker in” for the season and catch up on books and baking –not necessarily in that order,

    Enjoy the day, Karen!

    1. Hi Sue, I’m happy you enjoyed the post and photos. I guess I’m going to have to let you know way in advance when I plan my next trip. 🙂 We have had exceptional weather this year…last year we had rain through half our vacation. Books and baking sounds like a nice way to escape the gloom.

  3. So gorgeous, Karen! What a lovely area to explore. I’ll bet it’s impossible to sit still at all (except maybe for the sauna?) with all the beautiful towns and parks to walk through. H

    1. The Tirol really is a beautiful area of Austria. You are so right…we have breakfast and then get in our car and go exploring for most of the day. We did make sure to get back in time for strudel each day though. 🙂

  4. I couldn’t wait to see all the fantastic photos of more breathtaking views, It’s like every corner you turn there’s more beauty to see..Thank you for letting share some of the lovely places you’ve seen.

    1. Hi Barbara, I’m happy that you enjoyed the post and photos. It seems that everywhere we went in the Tirol the scenery was just breathtaking.

  5. Karen, you have taken so many stunning shots. One after the other could be on a post card. I really hope that you have had some enlarged and are displayed in your home. Every place you visit holds a very special place in your heart and Austria needs to get on my bucket list! Have a super weekend. BAM

    1. Thank you Bobbie, for your nice compliment. I’m happy that you enjoyed the photos. I know we will have wonderful memories from this trip…it has been wonderful. Have a nice day as well. 🙂

  6. Your photos are so sharp and clear and Austria looks so clean and prefect as for the food. I couldn’t just settle for a selection of cheeses they would have to follow a selection of desserts.

    1. Thank you for your nice compliment, Maria…I’m happy that you enjoyed the photos. Austria and Germany both are very clean. If you could see the size of the slice of cheese strudel with vanilla sauce that I ate every afternoon, you might understand why some nights I just had the cheese. 🙂

    1. Hi Madonna, This trip to Austria has been perfect. I’m so glad I added a new area to explore…it is amazingly beautiful. Hopefully, I’ll be able to get the recipe for the strudel as it was the best my husband and I ever had.

  7. I have never been to Austria, having sen your photos I would be on my way there ASAP but I will have to convince my husband, he does not like snow or the cold. Mind you I don’t either, but that scenery is spectacular. Have a good Sunday Diane

    1. Hi Diane, I think fall is the perfect time of the year to visit Austria…we have done it several times at this time of the year. The weather this year has been especially nice. I’m sure summer is wonderful but we don’t like to travel when places are too crowded with tourists.

  8. Isn’t it funny, that I’ve been to all six countries the Alps runs through, but the only time I’ve ever been to the Alps was in France. And I didn’t even stay! I grew up within the largest range of mountains in N. Ireland (tiny in comparison but incredibly beautiful) so I take them for granted. Must stop doing that!

And I now know what to do with my overly set fig jam – dressings! Would never have thought of fig mustard 🙂 Safe journey!

    1. Hi Johnny, I can’t tell you how many times my husband and I have been through the mountains but were not able to see them because of clouds and fog. This year we were so lucky with the weather. Definitely make fig mustard…spicy and sweet, it is a nice condiment.

  9. What a fantastic trip, and the photos, the building, the scenes, the sky, so blue, I am so enjoying each and every snap shot. Oh, I gained 20 pounds stuffing myself with all the delicious food. I do not normally eat much pastries, but when in Austria do as the Austrians do, I will sample every pastry.

    1. Hi Norma, I’m so happy that you are enjoying following along on our trip. The weather has been wonderful so I’m able to get some nice photos this year. The strudel was outstanding…I know you would like it.

    1. Hi Sam, You are so right, fall is a wonderful time to travel. We were more than pleased with the Salzburgerhof and the food was outstanding. Thank you for your nice compliment…I’m glad you enjoyed the photos.

  10. This is my favorite part of the world, bar none. Everything is as beautiful as can be with the mountains and the valleys but every single place is as neat as a pin. Even the farmers – you wouldn’t see farm equipment left nilly willy like you do in Italy for instance. Their wood stacks are all uniform and tidy – I would love to be that neat. 🙂

    1. Hi Maureen, I so agree with you about how beautiful this part of the world is. We have been saying the same thing about how neat and clean Austria and Germany, as well, are compared to other places we have traveled. 🙂

  11. What a gorgeous, gorgeous place! I’ve driven many places in Austria but never the Tirol. I hope to one day. When I go, I’d love to stay at the Hotel Salzburgerhof. 🙂

    1. Hi Krista, We enjoy Austria so much and this region is just beautiful. I hope you get to make another trip and visit the Tirol. I have no doubt that you would really enjoy staying at the Salzburgerhof…we loved it.

    1. Hi Angie, Aren’t the mountains wonderful. We were so lucky that the weather was nice so that we could enjoy their beauty. The food at the Salzburgerhof was some of the best we have had on the trip.

  12. I really do find the scenery breathtaking. The colors are so vibrant! And I’m sure impressed with the beauty of the hotels and cuisine! Everything is so elegant. I’m sure you’re enjoying every minute, Karen! 🙂

    1. Hi Debra, Austria has such outstanding natural beauty…my husband and I love traveling in this part of the world. We are having a terrific time…thank you!

  13. Oh Karen, beautiful, beautiful, beautiful photos and presentation. It brought back memories of when I traveled Europe by train with my then 4 year old son. Of course we went through Austria (we spent a .day in Salzburg and a brief stop at Badgastein). We were glued to our cabin window to not miss any of the spectacular scenery we went through. I still have them etched in my mind.

    1. I appreciate you nice compliment, Fae. I’m happy that you enjoyed the post and photos and that they brought back nice memories of your trip with your young son.

    1. Hi Carolyn, I appreciate your nice compliment. We certainly have seen outstanding scenery on this trip. We were so pleased to have stayed at the Salzburgerhof…it was perfect.

    1. Hi Kay, We were just saying that this may be our best trip ever…it has been perfect. Austria truly is one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited.

  14. They certainly have some beautiful churches and that one in the first image is just stunning. And it’s in such a beautiful setting. You’ve certainly made me want to visit Austria xx

    1. Hi Charlie, The Annakircheri chapel that you speak of is stunning. It is in the middle of a field in the village of Achenkirch which is on lake Achensee. The whole area is beautiful…the mountain lake is at 3000 feet with incredibly clear water. I do hope that you will have the opportunity to travel to Austria. I know that you would thoroughly enjoy your visit.

  15. What beautiful beautiful pictures. I would certainly be there with you eating cheese with truffle honey and fig mustard perfect

    1. Thank you Tania, I’m happy that you enjoyed the photos. Oh yes…the truffle honey and fig mustard were a perfect accompaniment to enjoy with the delicious cheeses. 🙂

    1. Hi Paula, You would love Austria…I hope you get to check it off your bucket list one day. I’m glad you enjoyed the photos…thank you!

  16. Your pics sure do capture your first sentence. The hotel looks magnificent – both room and food. The road looks like something else – not many motorhomes on it I’d guess 🙂

    1. Hi Larry, I’m glad you enjoyed the post and photos. You are right, the hotel and food were wonderful. Would you believe I mentioned you when we were driving on Grossglockner. We saw a couple of pickup size campers on the road but nothing the size of your beautiful motorhome.

    1. Hi Monique, I have to agree with both you and Chris on the outstanding beauty of God’s creation. I do a lot of research when it comes to the hotels we stay at…I’m glad you approve. 🙂

  17. I have never visited Tirol, and it is one of those places I must get to next time in Europe. It reminds me of Bavaria but there is a difference I can”t put my finger on! The Hotel Salzburgerhof looks unbelievable!

    1. Hi David, You are so right about the German state of Bavaria and the Austrian state of Tirol having a similar feel and yet they are very different. I do hope you get a chance to visit the Tirol…I know you would really enjoy the area. We were very pleased with our stay at the Salzburgerhof…it was perfect.

  18. What a spectacular travel journal, Karen. I can almost imagine dining at that table with the lovely rose and a glass of wine, trying to make up my mind on what to order from the menu 🙂

    1. Hi Rajini, I’m happy to know that you enjoyed the post. I’m glad you liked the photo of the rose and glass of wine…that you could picture yourself at the table deciding on the evening meal. 🙂

  19. Simply stunning. I, too, think Austria is one of the most beautiful place I’ve ever seen. It’s so gorgeous, it’s almost like breathing happiness. (Your photos capture it wonderfully!)

    1. Thank you Tracy, for your nice compliment. I know there were a lot of photos in this post but I really wanted to share Austria’s beauty with everyone who hasn’t had a chance to visit it. I’m glad you agree.

  20. Only saying here what you already know: exquisite, breathtaking, sweet delicious air! How truly blessed to walk those meadows and hills!!

    1. Hi Spree, You are so correct…I can’t tell you how many times we have repeated those words. The wonderful weather really made the trip into this beautiful region special.

    1. Hi Raymund, I’m glad that you enjoyed the post. Taking the funicular high above Innsbruck to see the outstanding view had to be a memorable experience.

    1. Thank you Jizelle, for your lovely compliment about my photos. Yes, I am blogging as I travel…it can be a little challenging to say the least. Another post and then I’ll be heading back to reality and home. 🙂 I’m glad that you are enjoying following along on our adventure through Germany and Austria.

      1. Keep ’em coming! One day I hope I can actually blog while on the road. Right now I’m 17 cities behind and still trying to catch up. I’m giving myself a travel ban until I get up-to-date! Have funnnn! 🙂

      2. It is hard blogging while you travel but I do enjoy sharing our adventure as it is happening. I do hope you get caught up…keep at it. 🙂

    1. Thank you Carol, I’m glad you enjoyed the photos. I know there were a lot but this region is so beautiful…I just had to share what we were experiencing. 🙂

  21. Beautiful photos Karen,,, like something from a travel brochure, only better! We’re only just back from a few days away, but you have me wanting to pack my bags and head off again.

    1. Hi Sarah, I’m glad you enjoyed the photos. I know what you mean as I could live out of a suitcase. I know your time in Paris must have been wonderful. We change planes at CDG on our way home…would have loved to have spent some time in Paris as well. 🙂

    1. Hi Tanya, I have to agree with you on all counts. No yodeling goat herders but we have seen lots of goats, sheep and cows in the lush green pastures. 🙂

  22. Hi Karen, All I can say is WOW—what fantastic photos… I would LOVE to visit Austria… As much as I love mountains, waterfalls and churches —I would be in 7th heaven IF I were there… I had to look through your photos several times…. Thanks SO much for sharing.. You are blessed to get to visit places like this…

    Hugs,
    Betsy

    1. Hi Betsy, Thank you for stopping by for a visit and your nice compliment. I’m glad that you enjoyed the photos. Yes, you would enjoy all the mountains, waterfall and churches…they are all abundant and beautiful in Austria.

    1. Hi Dedy, The mountains of Austria do make you feel like you are in a heavenly place…they are beautiful. We thought the hotel and food were wonderful. 🙂

    1. Hi Pat, I do hope that you get the opportunity to visit Austria someday. It is hard to think of us making a trip to Europe without spending time in Austria…we love it. I know that living in Colorado now, you see lovely mountains but Austria and the Alps have such a different feel.

  23. Amazing, dream-like landscapes and once more such delicious amazing food photographs! You make me want to visit every single place you present here.

    1. Hi Sissi, I do hope you visit a few of the places that we have been, the Tirol is beautiful. You are so close, just a couple hours away by car…less by plane. 🙂

  24. Really fabulous photos, Karen! It looks like you two are having a marvelous time. The hills are definitely alive with the sound of music in this part of Austria it seems. We will have to make a trip here the next time we make it south of the border!

    1. I’m glad that you enjoyed the post, Laura. Wait to you see the next post, I think you will be humming “the hills are alive with the sound of music”. You definitely need to make a trip south to the Tirol. If people saw Anna there, they would think of Heidi…she is so cute. 🙂

  25. Simply beautiful post Karen, although I might suffer from car sickness with all those twists and turns. You capture and describe these places perfectly. Nothing like going first class!!!

    1. Thank you for your lovely compliment, Diane. I’m happy that you enjoyed the post and photos. There are plenty of twists and turns on the back roads of Austria…a big box of Dramamine might be necessary. 🙂 We have stayed in some beautiful places, that is for sure.

    1. Hi Celi, I’m glad to know that you enjoyed the post. We have certainly seen some spectacular scenery on this trip thanks to the great weather we have been having.

    1. Hi Angela, I have to agree with you…the scenery really is spectacular. I do enjoy the multi course dinners…they are just the right serving size and let you get to try so many wonderful dishes.

  26. Oh, my gosh, what a picturesque part of the world. You’re giving me great ammo to convince my husband where we should go the next time we’re in Europe. I’ll be coming back here again and again for your marvelous recommendations.

    1. Hi Liz, My husband is the first one to say he wants to go to Germany and Austria when we start planning a trip. He loves driving the roads, the great scenery, the wonderful hotels and the food…I think your husband would too. 🙂

    1. Hi B, I’m glad that you enjoyed the post and photos. I read your comment to my husband about being brave and he said, “little does she know”. So much for the bravery, I guess. 🙂

  27. Oh my goodness…how breathtakingly beautiful everything is! Karen, you really should do a travel show. You’d give Rick Steves a run for his money, not to mention that your experiences are more luxe. What a fabulous trip you’re having and the trees and lakes are stunning. And the food, too!

    1. Hi Betsy, Thank you for your kind words…you gave me a real smile. I’m happy that you enjoy my travel posts. Yes, I do travel very different from Rich Steves…no trains and no backpack. I enjoy staying in a hotel that has a good restaurant. 🙂

    1. Hi Kelli, You always bring a smile to my face with your comments. I don’t think I can top this post…the natural beauty of this region is breathtaking. Thank you for your nice compliment, I so glad you enjoyed the photos.

  28. I just love reading about your travel adventures, Karen! I will have to live vicariously through you for now, no travel plans on our itinerary for a while now. I was in Innsbruck when I was in my 20’s.. it’s high time I went back, but I’d much rather stay in a hotel and not a tent like I did back then, lol! What excellent hotels you’ve found! The food looks incredible!! xx

    1. Hi Barbara, It is nice to know that you enjoyed our travel adventures, we have having a great time. Oh yes, if you go back a hotel will be much nicer than a tent. We have been so pleased with our hotels and the food…it has all been wonderful. Thank you for your nice compliment.

  29. Sounds like a wonderful trip.
The pictures are gorgeous and the hotels superb. We have been at the Post in Leermoos and I do completely agree that a stay there is a unique experience.
As Austrian, it makes me very happy that you enjoyed the stay in our country.
    Cheers!

    1. Hi Daniela, I appreciate your kind words. My husband and I love everything about Austria…the natural beauty, the wonderful people and the delicious food that we have been enjoying. I’m glad that you agree with me about the Hotel Post in Lermoos…we think it is lovely.

    1. Thank you Jessica, for your nice compliment. We think Austria is wonderful and keep returning so I can see why you would like to visit. 🙂

  30. Beautiful pics as always! It’s like you had all the seasons covered, snow on the mountains, fall colored leaves on the trees and at the same time the hillsides are so green. Thanks for sharing!

    1. Thank you Jan, for your nice compliment. I’m happy that you enjoyed the photos. You are right about it looking like three seasons…I didn’t think of that until your comment.

    1. Thank you Christin, I appreciate your visit and your nice compliment. I’m happy that you enjoyed the photos. All of the food was as good as it looks.

    1. Hi TW, The next region on our travel adventure before we fly out of Munich is Salzburgerland. I’m happy to know that you enjoyed the photos and appreciate your nice compliment…thanks.

  32. Wow, your post makes me miss Switzerland and Europe so much! There’s just so much beauty in the landscape, the cities/towns and the food. You really capture a trip through the heart of Switzerland!

    1. Hi Jennifer, Thank you for stopping by for a visit and your nice compliment. Europe does have so many beautiful places to visit. Our travels in this post were in Austria which does remind me a lot of Switzerland. 🙂

    1. Thank you so much for your nice compliment, Darryl. I’m so glad that you are enjoying following along on our trip and that you liked the post and photos. 🙂

  33. Very beautiful. Just looking at those Olympic ski jumps makes me queasy. I once drove up to Lake Placid to pick my daughter up from her training camp & as I rounded the bend, couldn’t figure out what this massive structure was in front of me. Of course it was during the summer but when I realized that it was the ski jump I thought to myself – “are they NUTS?!!”

    1. Thank you Diane, I’m glad that you enjoyed the post and photos. It sounds like we have more in common than good food. I can’t even imagine going to the top of a ski jump let alone pushing myself off it and flying through the air…then flying down the snow. 🙂

  34. Such a beautiful post Karen and it’s a pleasure to wake up and see such beautiful imagery of Austria. It looks exactly as I imagine it! I’m looking forward to seeing those delicious food snaps next 🙂 enjoy!

  35. Waw, what beautiful sights you have over there,…I am a big fan of Austria too, especially in Summertime, we hiked a lot & ate in these lovely & wonderful hotels! 🙂 Breath-taking pics! 🙂 x

    1. Hi Sophie, I have never been to Austria in the summer but it must be wonderful. Thank you for your compliment, I’m happy that you enjoyed the photos.
