Bavaria Will Steal Your Heart

Bavaria Will Steal Your Heart with its picture perfect scenery, romantic castles, baroque churches, friendly people and delicious food. Of all the wonderful areas that you can visit in Germany, I believe that the state of Bavaria has to be the favorite of most tourists who visit because it offers so much to see and do in a relatively small area.

Neuschwanstein Castle In The Fall
Neuschwanstein Castle In The Fall

This is a state that is probably known best for its Oktoberfest celebrations with hearty food and great beer in Munich and Neuschwanstein Castle built by Ludwig II, King of Bavaria. While visiting, it is very tempting to get on the autobahn and drive as fast as you can from one tourist sight to another but this is one place where you should really drive the winding and twisting back roads to appreciate this beautiful region.

Hohenschwangau Castle Where Ludwig II Lived As A Young Boy

In one day’s time you can visit three castles that are associated with King Ludwig. He was born in Nymphenburg, his father’s summer residence on the outskirts of Munich, then lived much of his young life in Hohenschwangau. He became king at the young age of eighteen and quickly became eccentric, having several castles built to escape public life. He lived in a fantasy world, listening to operas by Wagner and reading romantic literature.

The most famous castle he had built was Neuschwanstein, which he never had a chance to live in. His favorite castle, where he lived for eight years before his mysterious death, was the small and exquisite, Linderhof Palace, known as the “Royal Villa”.

Just a few miles away from Neuschwanstein, is the picturesque town of Fussen.

Thirty minutes north of Fussen is a wonderful church out in the countryside near the town of Steingaden. The pilgrim church is literally surrounded by rolling pastures with rail fences enclosing farm animals. In the distance, you can see the impressive Alps.

From the outside, you might think that Wies Church it is just another local church but you would be so wrong. It is absolutely stunning once you go inside. It is a UNESCO World Heritage building and is considered a masterpiece of Bavarian Rococo.

One of my favorite small towns in the area is Mittenwald. It is considered by many, to be the most beautiful town in the Bavarian Alps. I think it is very charming with its buildings that are decorated with painted facades and carved gables. In the middle of town, you will find the beautiful St. Peter and St. Paul parish church.

Inside, the interior is lovely with crystal chandeliers and elaborate stucco work. Look closely and you will see that many of the angels painted on the ceiling are playing violins. The town became famous for its many well know violin makers.

Just down the main street from the church is the beautifully frescoed Alpenrose Hotel. It has a very nice restaurant that is frequented mostly by locals. My husband and I have enjoyed soups and main courses at the Alpenrose and they have all been delicious. Of course it wouldn’t feel like you were eating in Bavaria unless you tried their sausages, sauerkraut and potatoes at least on one of your visits.

I truly believe that Bavaria will still your heart. Once you have visited this wonderful region, you will want to plan a return trip in the future as there are such great little villages that will remind you of something you have read in a storybook.

    1. Hi Rosemary, Way better than Disneyland! I had trout almandine for lunch that day but my husband let me try the sausages and they were terrific as was the sauerkraut.

    1. Hi Mad Dog, You can’t believe all the castles we have seen but these certainly are the most beautiful. This is my husband’s favorite lunch when we travel in Bavaria…he says the sausages are the best. 🙂

  1. Thanks for the beautiful pictures of my ‘Home-Country’. Even after 40-some years I still miss the sights and the sound of church bells Sunday mornings. I try to visit as often as I can… Glad you had a wonderful time!

    1. Thank you FLRose, for stopping by for a visit and your nice compliment. Germany is one of my husband’s and my favorite countries is visit in Europe. Even though it isn’t Sunday, I woke to the sound of church bells this morning…it is a lovely way to start the day.

    1. Thank you Agi, for your lovely compliment. I’m happy to know that you enjoyed the post and photos. I know you will love Bavaria…it truly is magical.

  2. Amazing buildings, so beautiful, interesting to imagine what was going on there back in the days while people in Iceland were living in houses made of mud and had shoes made from the skin of fish 😀

    The sausages look tasty…

    1. Hi Soffia, I so enjoyed your comment. One of the wonderful things about traveling is comparing how differently people have lived over the centuries in different parts of the world. People that lived in harsh climates had to deal with things we can’t even imagine today.

    1. Hi Boleyn, I have to agree with you about the ornate buildings…they are beautiful. Actually, we have eaten very few lunches as the breakfasts are so large. We usually have some pastry in the afternoon but my husband loves the sausages at the Alpenrose. 🙂

  3. I loved visiting Bavaria through your lens. Those chateaux & beautiful churches, look like they’re from a fairy tale book. Your trip is making me want to visit. Loved the tables outside the restaurants with the blue checked cloths, they all seem to be red checks here in France.
Enjoy the rest. of your trip and can’t wait to see more pictures.

    1. Thank you for your compliment, Barbara. I’m glad that you enjoyed the photos. I know that you would love Bavaria and it is an easy flight into Germany from France…that is what we did this trip.

    1. Hi John, We are definitely seeing beautiful scenery and sights during our travels. You should see what I haven’t able to take photos of along our journey…just believe it is all wonderful. I’m glad you are enjoying following along. Thank you!

  4. Stunning Karen, like out of a storybook picture book! My former in-laws were from Bavaria and visited often; wish I had taken the opportunity to visit!! They had a sausage/meat shop here in the US, making their own sausages so just picturing that lunch brought back some very good memories!

    1. Hi Linda, it is so nice to hear from you! I’m happy that my post brought back some nice memories…too bad you didn’t get a chance to visit. Perhaps one day in the future. 🙂

    1. Thank you Danielle, for your nice compliment. I’m happy that you enjoyed the photos and are going to be following along on our journey. There are so many beautiful places coming up.

  5. I’m with you, it will definitely steal your heart. Great pictures Karen. We were there during the Christmas holidays years ago. I felt as if we were in a fairy tale with King Ludwig and Wagner. I can almost hear the music as I write.
    Sam.

    1. Hi Sam, I’m happy to know that you enjoyed the photos…thank you. We spent two Christmases in Germany and Austria and it is a wonderful time to visit. The Christmas markets are wonderful and everything is decorated so beautifully.

  6. Your photos are exceptional Karen, thank you so much for posting and writing about your wonderful holiday. The architecture is indeed exquisite, so rich! The fall colours are beautiful and it’s so nice that you’re having such good weather.

  7. How I’m loving seeing Europe through your eyes. And I really like the fact you’re visiting and writing about areas that are (almost) off the tourist trail. Both churches, neither of which I’ve heard of, are magnificent. And those frescoes! So charming. Although, I’ll leave you in peace to enjoy the local sauerkraut! Hmm, not keen on the stuff.

    1. Thank you Johnny, so much for your lovely compliment. I’m happy to know that you are enjoying my travel posts and photos. The churches are truly amazing in their beauty. They make you wonder how they ever raised the money to build them…especially the ones in the rural areas.

  8. Visited both Neuschwanstein Castle and Hohenschwangau Castle in 2005 when I was spending some time in Bavaria. Love the area, so beautiful. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

    1. Hi Norma, I’m so happy that I have brought back nice memories of your travels to this area and your visits to the castles. I totally agree with you about how beautiful the area is…you can never get enough of Bavaria.

    1. Hi Samokan, Thank you for stopping by and your nice compliment. I’m happy to know that you enjoyed the post and photos of Bavaria. It really does steal your heart. 🙂

    1. Thank you Tracy, for your compliment. I’m glad that you enjoyed the photos. Bavaria really does remind you of the storybooks that we read as a child.

    1. Hi Arlene, Aren’t the castles just outstanding. The food is terrific…other than the sausages, most of the food is served in just the right proportions and not heavy at all. We have eaten many a meal on this trip that would give the most talented chefs in our country a run for their money. 🙂

  9. Karen, thank YOU so much for your posts while you are traveling! Germany seems so magical through your eyes, descriptions and pictures! Thank you for allowing me to experience your journey with you! Safe travels!

    1. Thank you for your lovely words, Bella. I’m happy to know that you are enjoying my posts…there are some wonderful places yet to come. I appreciate your nice wish. 🙂

  10. Ludwig of Bavaria has played a large enough time in my memory books! I loved Linderhof most and kept on returning ~ my daughters rather naturally were thrilled by Neuschwanstein. But the most memorable nights for me were surely spent on the Herrenchiemsee island – the castle Ludwig meant to model after Versailles. He died ere he could complete. Don’t know whether it still happens, but the most wonderful baroque/chamber concerts used to be held on certain nights in the Great Hall there ~ a fascinating experience since a ticket did not buy you a seat but a passage to and fro to the island and the permission to slowly walk around the perimeter of the Hall during the performance . . . . almost a life changing experience . . . I remember the almost creepy feeling up and down my spine . . .

    1. Hi Eha, Ludwig certainly did give us some wonderful castles to enjoy. I’ve read many articles about Herrenchiemsee Castle. There is a hotel on the island that you can stay at but unfortunately it is closed during the time of the year that we are in the area. I’m sure it must be magical to listen to the music during a performance in the Hall. Maybe someday, I’ll get the chance to enjoy the experience. 🙂

  11. Breathtaking, Karen, totally breathtaking! I am now wishing that my family and I had had more time to look around when we were there in 1994. You have shown me some beautiful things that we missed. Bookmarking this page now!

  12. Wonderful captures of the castles and town. I loved Bavaria when I was there and Linderhof Palace was one of my favorites with the beautiful grounds and grotto. Your photo of the pastures and animals is what I remember – green and serene. Thanks for sharing!

    1. Thank you Traci, for your nice compliment. I’m happy that you enjoyed the photos and that they brought back memories of your visit to the area. It really is a serene part of the world.

  13. Definitely a breathtaking sights. Makes me want to go get lost in Bravaria 🙂 Thank you for all the awesome pictures!

    1. Hi Maureen, Bavaria really does does steal your heart the very first time you visit. The food is outstanding…Germany is only second to France with the number of Michelin starred restaurants.

  14. Karen! I’m doing a Bavaria series, too, and my photos are nothing compared to yours! It’s nice to see that the castles have a completely different grandeur under blue skies and sunshine as opposed to rain. Love them!

    1. Hi NWTP, I had to laugh at your comment about the rain. Last year we couldn’t even see Neuschwanstein because of the drizzle and fog and it was right in front of us. We have been blessed with wonderful weather this trip. 🙂

  15. I’ve been to Mittenwald and the Linderhof so many years ago. It was indeed lovely. I had gone there with my mom–she had grown up in the area .
I’m so glad you are SO good at photography–the pictures are gorgeous! Almost as good as being there. Looks like you had some very good weather and I’m certainly glad of that! Ours has turned cold with flurries—time to finish up our last tiny trip out to get winter supplies. Then out comes the soup pot–my favorite time of year!

Take care, Karen….and keep sharing those pics!
    : )

    1. Hi Sue, I do remember you telling me that your mother was from this area. I’m happy that my post brought back nice memories of your visit with her. Thank you for your lovely compliment as always…I’m glad you are enjoying following along. We have been blessed with nice weather but I know winter will be right around the corner when we return to New Hampshire.

  16. I am definitely in love with this architecture. It’s awe-inspiring. We don’t have anything like it here in Oz – not one castle, sadly. I just love this and will have to add Bavaria to the places I must visit xx

    1. Hi Charlie, Aren’t the buildings just wonderful…from the smallest homes to the castles, they are all beautiful. You definitely must add Bavaria to your travel list, you will love it.

  17. My goodness Karen, I was going to say it’s like something out of a fairy-tale cartoon, but the fairy-tale cartoons are based on these real life buildings!! Just amazing. The alter of the Weis Church reminds me a bit of Versailles alter. Just stunning

    1. Hi Lisa, You are so right…Germany is where so many of our fairy tales came from. I agree with you about the Wies Church, it is breathtakingly beautiful.

  18. When I was 12, I saw my first photo of Neuschwanstein and knew that I had to see it. Two years later, I went to Germany with two friends and told them, in no uncertain terms, that I had to visit Neuschwanstein. What magic for a 14-year old boy!

We also saw the Wies Church (which I knew as the Wolfahrtskirche (Pilgrims’ Church) – I had never seen anything like it! Thank you for taking me back, Karen. Bavaria did steal my heart and still has it!

    1. Hi David, I’m happy that I have brought back nice memories of your visit to Neuschwanstein Castle and the Wies Church. They truly are unforgettable. Thank you for your lovely compliment.

    1. Thank you Teresa, for your nice compliment. I’m happy that you enjoyed the photos. I’m glad you agree about the area looking like it is from the fairy tales we grew up with.

  19. So lovely to see all this – I worked for a company that sent me to Munich many, many times but I never really got to see much of it. I did go to Oktoberfest once though (it’s all a bit blurry 😉 )

  20. It looks surreal – your photos captured exquisite castles that I can only imagine how breathtaking they are in person! Lunch looks yummy too! Have a great trip!

    1. Thank you Mary, for your nice compliment. I’m glad that you enjoyed the photos from Bavaria. I wish my camera could capture the real beauty of the area like it deserves. I appreciate your wish…we are having a great time.

  21. Wow! Those photos of the Wies Church! Unbelievable. I love the Alter. My goodness it’s an elaborate work of art. I’ve always heard Bavaria was special, and I can see why. This is a wonderful trip and I’m so glad to be taking it with you. 🙂

    1. Hi Debra, I’m so happy that you are enjoying following along on our journey through Germany and Austria. Isn’t the Wies Church outstanding. You would have no idea just driving by it out in the middle of the green fields of what lies inside this church by looking at it from the outside.

    1. Hi Larry, I know exactly what you mean. Bavaria is one place I return to over and over…it is such a wonderful region. Thank you for your nice compliment, I’m glad that you enjoyed the photos.

  22. I have wanted to visit Germany all my life. I did get as far Frankfurt airport 🙂 Everything was so close when I lived in England but as a young person, you are busy with your future and school. Now I so want to travel but have commitments of being a parent. Sigh, one day. In the meantime, I have started learning German 🙂

Your photos are gorgeous Karen, what a fairy tale setting.

    Nazneen

    1. Thank you Nazneen, I’m happy that you enjoyed the photos. I’m sure that sometime in the future that you will get the opportunity to return to Europe and see Germany. 🙂

    1. Hi Lisa, Thank you for stopping by for a visit and your nice compliment. I’m happy that you enjoyed the photos. I do hope you will get a chance to visit your wish list of travel destinations some day. 🙂

  23. WOW!! My heart is stolen indeed!!! The inside of that church is simply breathtaking!! Sausages, ‘kraut and potatoes oh my! – Can’t believe this trip can be topped!

    1. Hi Carol, Bavaria really will steal your heart…I believe it is very special. The churches, the beautiful scenery and topnotch food make it a terrific vacation destination.

  24. OMG Karen! The pictures are breathtaking…the castles, churches…I can only imagine seeing all these in person…
Thank you so much for the virtual tour, you just took me to a world that I never seen…
On another note, thank you for the gentle and sweet comment, I really appreciate all the support…
Enjoy and have a lovely week 😀

    1. Thank you Juliana, for your lovely compliment…I’m happy that you enjoyed the photos. It is always nice to know that people enjoy following along on our travel adventures. Thank you for your wish and I hope things are better with you soon.

I hope you set a chance to visit the castles someday. Thank you for your compliment.

  26. This part of Germany is breath taking. Castle hopping is so fun. When was your last visit? A great dish of bangers and mash always hits the spot. I am certain some place around the world is celebrating October fest and we should go. I will swing by and pick you up on the way from Asia.. LOL. Have a super weekend. Take Care, BAM

    1. Hi Bobbie, We are traveling in Germany and Austria at the present time. You are right about Oktoberfest celebrations…they are happening in many of the small towns that we have been visiting. I hope you have a nice weekend as well.

    1. Thank you for your compliment Laura, I’m happy that you enjoyed the photos. The fall colors have been absolutely beautiful on our trip.

  27. Wow I so missed touring Europe after looking at your photos. I also missed this castle Neuschwanstein as it is way out of our route when we were there last summer

    1. Hi Raymund, I’m happy that you enjoyed the photos and that they have brought back memories of your trip. Last fall when we went to see Neuschwanstein, it was so drizzly and foggy that you couldn’t see the castle. I’m happy we got to see it in all its glory this year.

    1. Hi Tin Man, This is one of my favorite areas of Germany…I love all the quaint villages and of course the wonderful castles. The first snowstorm of the season dropped two feet of snow but it had basically all melted by the time we got there.

    1. Hi Liz, I think it is great that my photos are inspiring you and your husband to take a trip to Bavaria…I know you would love it as much and my husband and I do.

  28. Kare, I have seen these castles more times than I can count – we used to spend each and every holiday near Füssen when I was a child – Neuschwanstein, Hohenschwangau, etc. I know the area by heart and all I can say is that his is certainly “a small world” – it fills my heart with joy to read that you are enjoying your visit to all these lovely places.
Enjoy your trip – I believe you are also visiting the Alsace region these days, I am sure that you are having a fantastic time there as well.
Noch eine gute Reise – enjoy the rest of your trip!

    1. Thank you Andrea, for your lovely compliment. I can’t tell you how happy it makes me feel to know that one of my German friends enjoys my posts on my travels through your beautiful country. The weather has been wonderful and my husband and I are having a terrific time. 🙂

  29. This looks quite stunning, almost unbelievable, in the literal sense! The Weis Church is quite stunning in the photo so it must be extraordinary in real life. GG

    1. Thank you for your nice compliment, Angela. I’m glad that you enjoyed the photos and you are right…Bavaria is much more impressive in person.

  30. Absolutely beautiful. I’m flying into Frankfurt on Tuesday. My trip is primarily to visit my husband and his family while he’s working. I look forward to the time we actually do so real sightseeing!!! I was just talking today to a Polish woman who lived in the Schwarzwald for 3 years before moving to Orcas Island (I kid you not).
I love that you love Germany.

    1. Thank you for your compliment Wendy, I’m happy that you enjoyed the photos. I hope you will have a great trip and I know you will enjoy spending time with your husband and his family. My husband and I really do love Germany…it is beautiful, the people are wonderful and the food is terrific. 🙂

  31. Karen, the very first story I wrote at age 9 was based on a picture of the Neuschwanstein Castle.Thank you for sharing this. Such memories!

    1. Hi Simply Life, I appreciate your nice compliment. I’m happy to know that you enjoyed the photos during our travels in Bavaria. Thank you!

    1. Hi Donna, I’m happy to know that you enjoyed visiting a little of Bavaria through my photos. I hope that someday you get the opportunity to visit the region…it is very special. 🙂

  32. What absolutely gorgeous pictures and what majestic buildings! I can see why it’s such a popular tourist area. Lucky you to get to be there in the fall. That first picture is my favorite!

    1. Thank you MJ, I’m happy that you enjoyed the photos. The sun had been behind the clouds and suddenly it came out just as we arrived below the castle. We love traveling to Europe in the fall…it is a pretty time of the year and usually the weather is good. This year, it has been fantastic. 🙂

    1. Thank you Kelli, for your kind words. I’m happy to know that you are enjoying following along on our travel adventures. The castles are so special…I’m glad that you enjoyed the photos.

  33. Sausages, Sauerkraut and Mashed Potatoes – can’t bet it – one of my favorite dishes.
Some buildings – just breathtaking. Neuschwanstein Castle, when I was there – many years ago .. you were not able to go inside, is it still like that??? “Royal Villa” is stunningly beautiful place and your photos truly give it justice. They say that Disney had the castle as model for his “Sleeping Beauty” castle.
Just beautiful this post, Karen – so envy … but I’m so happy that the weather is your side and for enjoying your holiday like you do.
We have a terrible storm coming over us just now – hope it will not come down that far… to where you’re. Scary, and I’m use to autumn storm as old sea dog. *smile

    1. Hi Viveka, My husband always has to have one meal of sausages, sauerkraut and mashed potatoes while we are in Germany. 🙂 You are allowed inside all the castles now but only as part of a tour and then you can’t take any photos. We have been having perfect weather on our trip but we have some rain today. I hope you weather the storm without any trouble. Take care my good friend.

      1. We got massive problems with “Simone” – 7000 people in our county only without power … no trains to work this morning. But nobody was killed or got seriously injured.
So it was … no photos. Same as Versailles.

      2. Karen, everyday is back to normal .. and it happen very quickly – Simone was nothing like the storms and hurricanes you have over there. Hope the great weather is still on your back.

  34. Stunning photos Karen. I guess a guy just can never have too many castles. I’m thinking that would be an amazing location for a destination wedding…not that I’m pushing my daughter or anything, it’s just a thought.

    1. Thank you Diane, for your nice compliment…I’m happy to know that you enjoyed the photos. As for a wedding, I guess you would really call it a fairy tale wedding if it took place in a castle. 🙂

  35. Some of these images are positively mythical! what a spectacular journey.
many years ago, I visited a friend living in Vienna–the sausages and mustards throughout Germany and Austria are incomparable. seeing that Bavarian plate made my mouth water!

    1. Thank you Nancy, for your nice compliment. I’m happy that you enjoyed the photos and that they brought back nice memories of your trip. I agree with you about the sausages and mustards…I just had a delicious fig mustard as a condiment with cheese and it was delicious.

  36. Bavaria would certainly steal my heart and my stomach I think! There’s no doubt that the European sausages are the way to go. It’s such a craft, almost like Asian techniques and dumplings. When it’s real, it’s real and truly all you holiday snaps give me wanderlust again! So thank you for the inspiration! Europe is on the big list for one day soon 🙂

  37. That castle looks like a fairy tale castle (a good one:-)). That lunch looks out of this world. I guess if you are touring and doing lots of walking you can get away with a good hearty lunch like that!

    1. Hi Becki, The castle really does look straight out of a fairy tale. Even with lots of walking, you can’t eat a lunch like that everyday…but once in a while it is delicious. 🙂

    1. Hi, Foods and Moods, Thank you for stopping by for a visit and your nice compliment. I’m happy that you enjoyed this post and my blog. I look forward to your return.

  38. The first time I went to Germany was in 1987. We visited Neuschwanstein, and a little girl, I was so enchanted by it! It’s an absolutely magical place. I’ve since been to Germany 3 other times, but have never quite made it back to Neuschwanstein. Thanks for these great memories.

    1. Hi Ducky, I’m happy to know that my post brought back nice memories or your visits to Germany. I hope you get a chance to go back to Neushchwanstein some day in the future. 🙂

  39. My family has come to Austria for Christmas, and en route to a Innsbruck, decided to visit Mittenwald for a day or two. Looking for a gasthaus, we walked by Alpenrose, booked two rooms and spent two lovely nights there. We especially enjoyed the restaurant and had two delicious meals there to the sounds of a wonderful zither player. Yesterday, I came across your blog about your stays at the Alpenrose. That made it twice as fun. Oh, and I forgot to add that we also have a home in NH! I’ve enjoyed your blog for a few months, and will continue reading it.

    1. Hi, I know you must be enjoying your visit to Austria. We have spent Christmas there several times. Mittenwald is a lovely little town and the Alpenrose is very atmospheric. I’m happy that you have enjoyed reading my blog…thank you. If you stop by again, leave your first name if you wish. That way I can thank you by name. 🙂

    1. Thank you Sartenada, I’m happy to know that you enjoyed the photos. Bavaria is such a lovely part of Germany, we keep returning year after year.

    1. Thank you for your visit Suzanne, and your nice compliment. I’m glad that you enjoyed the photos of Bavaria. Hopefully, you will get a chance to return and see more of this beautiful part of Germany.
