Roasted Grapes, A Sweet And Savory Appetizer

Do you want an appetizer that will please the pickiest eater but impress your foodie friends? Roasted Grapes, A Sweet And Savory Appetizer takes mere minutes to put together and is perfect to serve at an impromptu gathering of friends.

Roasted Grapes And Warm Brie Bruschetta
Roasted Grapes And Warm Brie Crostini

We have all had it happen…you get a phone call from friends that happen to be in the neighborhood and want to stop by for a visit. Of course you say “yes”, then immediately think about what you can put out to nibble on with drinks when they arrive. You could set out nuts, chips and dip, or crackers and cheese but you have done that a million times. A cheese plate with some grapes is lovely but you know you can do better than that. Think!

How about roasting the grapes…YES!  Instead of crackers, what about topping crostini with sliced brie and warming the cheese slightly in the oven with a sprig of fresh thyme. Oh yes, now you have something special. You guests will think you are terrific when you pop into the kitchen for a couple of minutes and come out with something that is original and delicious. Smile graciously as everyone enjoys this appetizer that you put together in such a short time.

Roasted Grapes With Warm Brie Crostini

Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Adjust the ingredients according to the amount of grapes used.

  • A large bunch of seedless red grapes cut into smaller clusters
  • 1 Tbsp. olive oil
  • 1 tsp. balsamic vinegar
  • 1 Tbsp. finely chopped fresh rosemary and thyme
  • 1/2 tsp. sea salt, or to taste
  • 1/2 tsp. black pepper
  • 1 baguette cut into slices about 1/4 inch thick, brushed with olive oil and baked in  a 350 degree oven till golden
  • 1 large wedge or small wheel of brie cut into 1/4 inch slices*
  • small sprigs of thyme for garnish (optional) plus olive oil to dot
  • balsamic glaze (optional)

Place grape clusters on a parchment or Silpat lined baking sheet. Drizzle olive oil and balsamic vinegar over grapes and sprinkle with the herbs and seasonings. Carefully toss all the ingredients together. Place in the oven and bake for 10 to 15 minutes until grapes soften and skins start to shrivel. (Do not overcook or they will start to break down).

Place a slice of brie on each crostini, top with a little sprig of thyme, dot with a drop of oil and place on a baking sheet. Place in the oven for a just a couple of minutes to warm the cheese.

To serve, place the warm brie crostini on a platter alongside the small grape clusters. I like to drizzle the grapes with a little balsamic glaze but that is optional.

****

I believe you will enjoy the caramelized goodness of roasted grapes, they make a wonderful sweet and savory appetizer. Served alongside the warm brie crostini, they are an easy and tasty appetizer that I believe your guests will enjoy.

*If you are like me, you always have cheese in your refrigerator. If you don’t have brie, camembert or a soft goat cheese would work well.

  1. Company for dinner tomorrow night and you can bet I’ll be trying this out. Who ever thought of roasting grapes. Not me for sure!

  2. What a terrific idea: elegant, unusual and easy to make. I just had a gathering where I put out crackers, cheese and (yawn) red grapes. Roasted grapes would have taken that from fine to fab!

  3. Amazing — what a wickedly clever idea … so tasty and so ‘simple’ !!! Can’t wait to try this (although without balsamic vinegar — I’ve gone off it at the moment) … what did your guests say? I bet they were in heaven …

    1. Thank you Jo, for your nice compliment. This is absolutely one of the most simple appetizers you could serve your guests. My guests love it. 🙂

    1. Hi Tin Man, I’m glad you like the appetizer…thank you for your compliment. I love balsamic with strawberries and thought it would work well with the grapes and it did.

  4. Karen, I may just try this on Friday when I have friends over for dinner. I will either make if for an appetizer or for dessert. Merci!

    1. Hi Karen, Not only do we both have the same first name but our tastes are similar. There are many an evening when I could have this for my meal. Enjoy. 🙂

    1. Thank you Kay, I’m happy to know that you like the idea. It seems several of my readers aren’t going to wait for guests. I hope you will enjoy it. 🙂

  5. I saw this in a magazine about a year or so ago. i thought, roasted grapes? That’s a bit odd. They had doused their version in honey, too, which sounded way to sweet for my liking. I love your savory take on the idea. Sounds much more appealing and balanced! 🙂

    1. Hi Ruth, I believe you would enjoy the roasted grapes. The savory ingredients go very well with the natural caramelized sweetness of the grapes. Thank you for your nice compliment.

  6. This screams fall cocktail party, Karen! I’m going to try your recipe this week. Not because we are expecting guests, but just because I want to taste these. I love the warmed Brie on crostini too!

  8. Looks wonderful! I am curious how you serve – obviously not finger food. Do you provide cocktail forks or something else. How do you pull the grapes from the stems without getting your fingers sticky with balsamic glaze?

    1. Thank you for your compliment, Ruth. I’m glad that you like the appetizer. I do put out little two prong cocktail picks for those who wish to keep their fingers clean. 🙂

    1. Hi Maureen, I’m glad to know that I’m not the only one thinking that. I appreciate your nice compliment but I’m sure you do a lovely job on short notice as well. 🙂

    1. Hi Eva, I do enjoy planning a cocktail party where I can make lovely little bites of goodness but we do have guests over on short notice and this is super simple. I know you entertain often and I believe you and your guests would enjoy this appetizer. Thank you for your lovely compliment.

  10. Roast grapes are so great! And alas, I never think to do them when faced with spur-of-the-moment guests! I gotta doing a better job of thinking. 😉 Such dish – simple, but loads of flavor. Really good stuff – thanks.

    1. I’m glad to know you agree with me about roasted grapes, John. Since it only takes a short time to prepare, I think they are perfect for impromptu gatherings. Thank you for your comment.

    1. Thank you for your compliment, Kristy. The warmed brie and grapes make a lovely combination. If you were popping in, I’d happily make this for you and then we would have to think about getting some lobsters. 🙂

    1. Thank you Dianela, for your nice comment. Yes, Concord grape jelly is a nice way to use grapes. Living in New England where the grapes grow wild, it is a very popular jelly to make.

  13. Hi Karen – I can’t believe I never heard of these, or even considered roasting grapes before… they look incredible… like shiny olives on a little branch. I bet the sweetness becomes so complex and nice after roasting. You can bet I’ll be trying these!

    1. Hi Charles, I’m glad you like this appetizer…thank you for your nice compliment. The roasting really brings out the flavor of the grapes. I’m glad you are going to give them a try. Enjoy!

    1. Hi Little Sis, I’m happy to know that you enjoyed the post. It is funny that most people think of grapes being used for wine or eating out of hand but they are wonderful cooked. They are not only healthy but very flavorful.

  14. The Europeans use grapes in their cuisine a lot, yet we don’t in North America. It’s something I’ve been wanting to try. This seems like an really approachable way to do it.

    1. Hi France, So nice to hear from you…I’m happy to know that you enjoyed the post. I agree with you that we don’t use grapes enough in our cuisine. I’ve had some wonderful dishes when we have traveled in Europe that use grapes.

    1. Hi Marcie, I do think you will enjoy how roasting amplifies the wonderful flavor of grapes. I hope you give this appetizer a try. Thank you for your comment.

    1. Thank you Michelle, for your nice compliment. Smoking grapes sounds interesting…I’ll give that some thought the next time I’m grilling. 🙂

    1. Hi Barbara, I have to agree with you, balsamic vinegar brings out the best in fruit. I wish you were a neighbor as well as I would love to try this appetizer using one of your wonderful breads. 🙂

  15. I’ve cooked with grapes before, only ever with chicken and added toward end of cooking time. But I’ve never had them roasted. And I just love melted Brie with thyme, especially if the Brie isn’t ripe – it’s impossible to buy perfectly ripe cheese where I live. This is simply delicious. Must pop over!

    1. Hi Johnny, I know what you mean about dishes made with grapes added at the end. One that comes to mind is sole Veronique. I do think you will like this simple appetizer. You are right…if the brie you have isn’t ripe, this is a terrific way to use it. Thank you for your nice compliment.

    1. Thank you Mad Dog, I’m glad that you enjoyed the post. I lived in Santo Domingo for six months and had outstanding aged Manchego cheese imported for Spain. Lucky you…I’m envious and hope you enjoy your cheese. 🙂

  16. This looks wonderful! I’m going to pin it so I can serve it on Thanksgiving. However, you had me laughing about the friends calling to stop for a visit! My husband would have a cow if that happened, turning off all the lights and making the dogs be quiet till they callers left! 🙂

    1. Thank you Kelli, I really appreciate that you like the appetizer enough to pin it, thank you so much. I think I’m probably laughing as much as you are about the thought of Nr. Picky Eater turning out the lights and keeping the dogs quiet. I can’t stop giggling. 🙂

    1. Thank you Liz, for your nice compliment. I agree with you…I would be very happy to have the roasted grapes and brie crostini for my dinner. 🙂

  17. This post surely demonstrates that however long we may have been passionate about food there is always something wonderful and new to learn. I have read each and every comment and quite a few people seem to have read about this and even made it. I would never have thought of roasting grapes: that it would work, and simply cannot wait to try: even if I have to buy a small out-of-seasons bunch to do so 🙂 !

    1. Hi Eha, I always enjoy your lovely comments. You are so right…no matter how often we eat out, read cooking magazines, blogs, etc. there is always something new to try. It is one of the reasons I enjoy traveling…to see what new food ideas are out there. I do think you will enjoy the enhanced flavor that roasting adds to the grapes. 🙂

    1. Hi Charlie, I know what you mean. I hate serving the same thing over and over again. I’m glad you like my idea for this appetizer…thanks.

    1. Hi MJ, I think you will enjoy the warm brie and roasted grapes…they were a nice flavor combination. Let me know when your plane lands and I’ll start heating the oven. 🙂

  18. These are great canapes. I didn’t know you could roast grapes like that. When it’s grape season I’d like to try this. I have done an appetiser with heated brie and it was very addictive xx

  19. If you can bake bread or cakes with grapes, why not roast them alone? I’m learning that there are very few things that roasting won’t improve.Today you taught me to roast grapes, Karen, and I’ll be sure to try it out. This is the kind of thing I love to “spring” on Zia when I visit. Thank you so much.

  20. Gosh – so many comments (I’m not surprised!) it took me ages to get down here 🙂 What a fabulous idea. I have a girlfriend coming round tonight and some grapes in the fridge we bought in a cool box over from Spain – guess what I’ll be making this evening!

    1. Hi Uru, First congratulations on finishing your exams…I know you are looking forward to graduation. I think that this is something that you would enjoy. Thank you for your sweet compliment.

    1. Thank you for your lovely compliment Rosemary. Oh…guests that show up unannounced can be a bit of a problem sometimes. That’s when a bowl of nuts comes in handy. Although if they join you in the kitchen, this certainly doesn’t take long to put together.

    1. Hi Chris, There are so many options of what you can combine with the roasted grapes. Your version would be nice served on top of salad greens.

    1. Hi Christin, Thank you for stopping by for a visit and your nice compliment. This appetizer does make a nice presentation but is very simple to put together.

  21. I think I’m in love with this, and I haven’t even made it yet. If only you would have posted this just a few days sooner, it would have been PERFECT for my sangria party. I just started the menu for next year, and this is the only thing on it so far 🙂

    1. Hi Lori, I really think you will enjoy this appetizer. I’m sorry that it wasn’t posted in time for your party…it would have been perfect but as you say, there is always next year. Thank you for your visit and lovely compliment.

    1. Hi Madonna, I have to agree with you that it is nice to have an easy appetizer that looks terrific and that guests love. I’m happy that you like this suggestion for something that is quick to put together but delicious…thanks.

  25. I too always have cheese in the fridge, either a camembert or blue cheese sort. Problem is they’re always half eaten! I can’t help myself 😉
I absolutely love the idea of balsamic grapes, what a lovely flavour combo

    1. Hi Lisa, I’m glad that you like cheese as much as I do…camembert and blues are favorites of mine as well. I think you will enjoy the savory and sweet flavors of the grapes roasted with the balsamic and herbs. Thank you for your nice compliment.

    1. Hi Kathleen, Thank you for your nice comment. The roasted grapes and cheese would be nice served as a cheese course after a meal as well as an appetizer. 🙂

  27. I admit to a bit of panic when someone stops by. Your grapes with brie are such a great idea and so much more sophisticated than that box of cheese straws that I have hidden in the back of the closet so my husband doesn’t eat them.:)

    Have a lovely weekend.
    Sam

    1. Hi Sam, You gave me a chuckle…I hide things in the back of my pantry as well. 🙂 I love cheese straws but this is an easy alternative. Thank you for your lovely compliment. I hope you have a nice weekend also.

  28. I would have never thought of roasting grapes! I can’t wait to try it – along with the brie and toast. Everything sounds delicious together.

    1. Hi Becki, It seems like there is a large group of us who enjoy brie. I believe that you will like the roasted grapes served with the cheese. Thank you for your comment.

  30. Karen I would love to serve both of these for a casual gathering. I have never heard of roasted grapes but reading your ingredient list I know they would be beautiful. Do you serve your grapes warm or at room temperature?

    1. Hi Bobbie, I’m glad to know that you like this appetizer. I do believe that you would enjoy the roasted grapes. I warmed the brie crostini after the roasted grapes came out of the oven. The grapes were still a little warm when I plated them with the crostini placed alongside.

    1. So good to hear from you Kate. I’m happy to know that you like the roasted grapes. I think this will be a nice addition to the appetizers that you serve your visiting guests. Thank you for your nice compliment.

  31. Oh, I love this! Just this week my hisband went outside to grill some chops, and he took some gorgeous black grapes with him. He put them on the grill, and they were utterly transformed. The sugars had caramelized, and the grapes had softened, their flavor having concentrated to a remarkable degree. What a wonderful accompaniment they were for the roast pork.

    1. Hi Adri, I’m glad to know that you enjoyed the post…thank you. During the summer when we are at the lake, I use my grill often. It is a great alternative to roasting. The grapes most have been delicious with the pork. 🙂

  32. As soon as I dare turn the oven on again I’ll try this – it sounds great! Or maybe I could do it on the dashboard… nah, not really (grin) Seriously, though, grapes and cheese most any way makes me happy!! Mmmmm…

    1. Hi Rachel, I do think you will enjoy the roasted grapes when your weather cools off. You gave me a chuckle since I know about all the fruit that you have dehydrated on your dashboard using the Texas heat. 🙂

    1. Hi Kay, If you are a grape eater, I believe you are really going to like the roasted grapes. Their sweet flavor is enhanced from being roasted in the oven. Enjoy.

  35. Wow!
    First of all : Fantastic.
Secondly: you have me thinking about lightly roasting other fruits to go on a cheese plate (apple slices?)
Thirdly: This would make an amazing garnish to a pork dish. (I always go to the pork! can’t help myself!!)

    1. Hi Carol, I’m glad that you like the idea of roasting grapes and you are right…they would make a nice accompaniment to a pork dish. 🙂
